News: 25-man Opening Day Roster is Set
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 31, 2009 6:03 pm

The Mets reassigned Bobby Kielty and Elmer Dessens.

Also, Omar Minaya told reporters that Fernando Nieve will not be on the 25–man roster, according to Newsday.

In other words, the team’s Opening Day roster is more or less set, and will look as follows:

Brian SchneiderCarlos Delgado, Luis Castillo, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Daniel Murphy, Carlos Beltran, and Ryan Church will be the team’s position players, with Ramon Castro, Marlon Anderson, Alex Cora, Nick Evans, Jeremy Reed and Fernando Tatis on the bench.

Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, Oliver Perez, John Maine will be the team’s starting pitchers to start the season, with Livan Hernandez jumping on board four days later in place of Evans.

Lastly, Francisco Rodriguez, JJ Putz, Bobby Parnell, Brian Stokes, Pedro Feliciano, Sean Green and Darren O’Day will be in the bullpen.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that the Mets are the only team in baseball that doesn’t have individual game tickets on sale after May? I find it pretty unbelievable that the season starts in a week and the Mets are only selling individual game tickets for April and May. It’s like they’re stringing the fans around by some marketing strategy to ensure that every last seat for every single game is sold.

    • killerkill says:

I do understand the logic behind it, but yeah i really don’t like it.

    • dave27 says:

Well the Red Sox still haven’t put tickets to their series with the Mets at Fenway on sale, trust me I have been looking.

Btw – we went to Fenway in 2006 (remember Pedro getting loved/shelled, getting swept). They haven’t played a real game at shea since about 1998. What gives with us going there again? Who makes these schedules?

      • dave27 says:

        *at Shea/Citi I mean

      • PedroMANIA says:

Dave, I went to fenway in ‘06 for that series and was thinking the same thing about this year. Why aren’t the sawx coming to citi this time?

        • dave27 says:

Never mind that in addition to 2 series with the Yankees, we have to play both Tampa and Boston.

When was the last time we weren’t screwed on interleague?

      • The Red Sox only sell those Mets tickets in 4 or 6 games packs. I forget. They sold out already. I got my Bleacher tix on Stub Hub and they were already mailed to me.

      • mouserdz says:

Ah Yes, I was at this game also. Even though Pedro was shelled, I still had a great time at that game. Maybe I was lucky but I thought Sox fans were real friendly. Maybe it’s the Yankee Hating bond.

  3. Mike Go says:

I’m glad to see Parnell is getting a shot. … People been bashing the Mets minor leagues, but there has been a pretty steady stream of guys to come up through the organization and Double A and Triple A roster are going to have good players this year

  4. killerkill says:

Bobby Kielty should have made the team over Marlon.

    • youknowwhatimsayin says:

Marlon is still on this team because of his guaranteed contract. My goodness, the Mets won’t even eat 1.5 million.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

If that bothers you, you’ll be really disappointed to learn that Marlon actually makes $1.15 million this season.

      • killerkill says:

I just hate when the best team can not be put together for stupid reason like money. Castillo I understand, that is like 7 million but they can afford cutting Marlon.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I dont even understand keeping him, you have to pay him one way or the other and he will not contribute AT ALL to this team so his absence would help us so give him his money and let him leave. I get it for top paid players like delgado when he struggled and castillo but come on 1.15 million is a drop in the bucket. Act like a big market team for gods sake.

          • Wanny2 says:

Marlon might be shot but remember that Kielty couldn’t make a major league roster for the better part of two seasons.

He was, and still may be, a very very good hitter against left handed pitching.

          • jaydh says:

who cares about Kielty. You can keep Evans on the ML roster when Livan comes up.

          • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

They actually do act like a big market team, and have for years….

Maybe Marlon is liked by the team and will be given a chance to be valuable for a while, and then be cut if he isn’t.

Why do people say we don’t act like a big market team?

Ever heard of Johan, Beltran, Delgado, KRod, JJ, etc?? Oops, I forgot, these are all acquisitions just like those made by Pitt and KC…..

          • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Brock Im not saying they never act like a big market team. Im saying they need to NOW with this situation. Marlon Anderson is a joke he is completely done and will give the team nothing yes he is owed 1.15 mill but a big market team ACTING like a big market team would cut him loose and eat the money.

          • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

But Zeile, he is literally the 25th man on the roster…..considering that Evans has only 300 AB at AA and no AAA time, why not give him a couple of months in AAA, and if Marlon is truly done, cut him then and bring up Evans? I really think that is what they will do…..

So if Marlon does well, we are happy, and if not, we bring up Evans and he may be the next good young Met with the way he has handled himself in the minors and this spring….

      • dave27 says:

When healthy, Anderson is one of the best PH’s in the game, and it’s not an easy thing to do.

Enough conspiracy theories- he is healhy and should contribute. If not he will be gone.

        • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

          Amen.

        • jaydh says:

          was he healthy in ST?

        • PedroMANIA says:

Very true, this overreating to Marlon being on the team is getting out of hand. Yes, he is on the team because of his contract big deal. If he isn’t producing by May he WILL be cut.

These are the same people who would be flipping out if we cut him and he goes on to have a productive year somewhere else.

          • PedroMANIA says:

and the people who want Evans on the bench have no idea what they are talking about, im sorry. He needs work on D and needs to be playing every day.

        • slanginsanjuan says:

my conspiracy theory is that I am always censored. if it’s because I’m puerto rican then that’s just wrong. i’m irish-italian. three generations manhattan. kids make 4.

  5. Mike Go says:

The Wilpons are doing some pretty shameful things to sell tickets. It’s the same as forcing weekend package people to buy weekday games too so they can sell more Mon-Fri games.

    • killerkill says:

No what would really be shameful is to have a brand new state of the art baseball park in a big city and not have it sold out EVERY game.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

well if we weren’t in the middle of an economic crisis with ownership drastically increasing ticket prices that statement might make sense.

  6. youknowwhatimsayin says:

The ONLY reason ‘Clown is still on this team is his guaranteed contract. Kielty should have made the team. As for Evans, I’d rather he sharpen his craft at 1B for Buffalo, and get tons of ABs, as opposed to rotting on the bench.

Meanwhile, Omar also passed up on Wil Ohman, who the Dodgers signed to a MnL deal, of all things.

The Mets have a terrible bench. Tatis (and I don’t count Castro because Jerry’s not going to use him as a PH anyway) is the only one with any kind of pop. The rest are just a bunch of slap hitters, and this includes ‘Clown.

  7. jack123 says:

Very sorry to hear about Kielty. Marlon better step up.

DAG: I actually think it is a really good thing for average game-goers that they only have April and May on sale.

When tickets go on sale in March few people are looking to buy mid or late season tickets. Who knows their July schedule in March? Instead, you have StubHub scavengers swoop in and buy up every decent ticket in the house for the whole season. Then in May when normal people start thinking about buying June and July tickets, there is nothing decent left ant they have to pay three times the face value on StubHub or to some broker.

The staggered release gives everyone a fair shot to get good seats at face value. I don’t know if that’s why they did it, but I think it’s a really good consequence for average fans, even if it wasn’t intended. I hope they just release June and July next, and then August and September later.

    • mouserdz says:

Good points. I don’t know why it’s a big deal that tix for later in the season aren’t sold yet.
What’s the difference if you buy a ticket now for a June game or in a month.

I also think it’ll give a lot of people the opportunity to go to the ballparkl see that Prom seats are a really good deal, and by themselves a pro-rated plan.

  8. Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura says:

Im really liking the way the bullpen looks.Omar did a great job cleaning out last years guys and re-tooling the entire pen.

    • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

I agree 100%+….how often do teams add 2 high quality closers in their primes in one offseason, especially when the pen was the biggest problem?

And your name is very cool.

    • Wanny2 says:

I agree but I still have concerns with the Parnell, Stokes, O’Day portion of the pen.

You can’t expect 7 great relievers (I guess the Red Sox can…) but I hope these three guys can at least not be as disastrous as the guys were last year.

      • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

I do think Parnell has a lot of potential…I also think Feliciano and Stokes can be better in the 6th and 7th instead of bigger spots a la last year.

I think having KRod and JJ as 1 and 2 makes everyone else better, just like having a Johan at number 1 makes the rest of the rotation better…..

        • Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura says:

Stokes has been surprising me since last year .He has life on the fastball which we have been lacking. With him,jj,and frankie we are looking very good.I agree with you on having concern with feliciano and o’day but i dont feel i have to change the channel when any of them come into a game (at least not yet anyway)..lol
          Thanks for the compliment Brock

          • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

I agree on Stokes, and with KRod, JJ, Parnell and Stokes, we have a pen full of flame throwers, and Feliciano as the lefty specialist (not needed before the 8th, as JJ gets out lefties just fine) and then Reed and O’Day as changes of pace in style and stuff…I think Omar has built a great pen.

            I hope I am right.

          • Wanny2 says:

Is that Steve or Rick Reed?

          • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

Ha! Oops, meant Green of course…getting my ex-Mariners mixed up….

    • Cactus says:

You like the bullpen? Parnell, Stokes, O’Day…I mean Elmer Dessens almost made te team. Sure the back end is excellent but I don’t think the bullpen overall is that good.

  9. Number57 says:

    Here we go…

  10. JINBK says:

Alright, for better or worse, these are the guys we’re pulling for for the next seven months, we’re so close now I can feel it, this week can’t go by fast enough!

    Let’s go Mets!

  11. jaydh says:

I dont understand how other teams can cut and release large contracts to get rid of their mistakes and we can’t cut a measly $1mil+ contract to get Marlon the H out of here. You can’t tell me we dont have a better option than Marlon. This is an example of Omar being afraid to admit his mistake.

    • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

Maybe Omar has liked Marlon for years, and wants to give him one last chance? Maybe Omar likes Marlon’s past performance as a PH, and his versatility, and who knows, maybe even his influence….I mean, it is not that long ago that he was a VERY valuable bench player.

I really doubt it is Omar’s ego or even the 1 mil….guys like Kielty are not guaranteed to be better than Marlon.

I also think that if he stinks by June, we will indeed eat his contract and cut him…..

      • jaydh says:

Or Maybe he is afraid to admit his mistake.

        08-.210/.255/.275
        09 ST-.238/.273/.286

I wouldn’t keep Kielty up, like i suggested above, I would keep Evans up when Livan is called up.

        • Brock Landers aka The Original Kingman 26 says:

I do really think that if Marlon doesn’t hit and Evans tears up AAA, that this is what we will see by June…I just think Omar loves Marlon and will give him a couple of months to see if he will produce like 2007 instead of 2008….I agree he was useless last year…

          • Cactus says:

How is “loving a player” acceptable for a GM?

          • Nate W. says:

In 2007 he performed so well that the team he was on released him. So I’m not sure that there is any difference between the two years…

        • PedroMANIA says:

Unless Evans is playing often it would be a mistake to have him on the ML roster.

      • jaydh says:

not to mention his horrid defense.

    • Wanny2 says:

      Jaydh:

It does seem ridiculous. But I’m not certain who the obvious replacement is.

Kielty was the toughest cut to me. He used to mash lefthanded pitchers, which is an area of need on the bench. At the same time, he’s been collecting welfare for the better part of the last two seasons.

I’m not convinced that Marlon has less to offer than Kielty, handedness notwithstanding. The last time Kielty was an effective major leaguer, Anderson may have been the premier pinch hitter in all of baseball.

      • Wanny2 says:

Your selection of Evans is a valid one.

Im kind of with you on that one but I also think the Mets would have to give him Tatis’ role and make Tatis a “regular” bench player in furtherance of Evans’ development.

        • jaydh says:

I understand the development part, but Evans could get ABs at 1B, where Tatis doesnt play.

          • GravediggerHebner says:

But Tatis does play 1B. He played it in the WBC, and he is likely to be the starting 1B if Delgado is rested against the proverbial ‘tough lefthander.’

          • jaydh says:

He’s played at 1B a total of 11 games in his career, and not very well at that.

          • GravediggerHebner says:

Fair enough, how many has Evans played, and how well has he done?

          • jaydh says:

Evans natural position is 1B. It was all he played in the minors until our OF problems last season where he was converted. I would say a .991FP and 9.64RFg is pretty good.

          • Wanny2 says:

Tatis has been pretty good in his limited appearances at 1B.

          • GravediggerHebner says:

This is specious, but I’m going to type it anyway: Tatis has 5 times a much major league experience at 1B than Evans does (60 innings played to 12).

      • jaydh says:

Evans stays on ML roster when Livan comes up. Thats what i would have done.

        • Wanny2 says:

I could go along with that so long as Evans gets Tatis’ at bats in the corner outfield spots at the beginning of the season.

By the way, Tatis has played 11 very good games at 1b (5.4 UZR/150) but clearly if Evans is here, he should get the first shot.

  12. gipper82475 says:

The Marlon thing is troubling. Hopefully, if he struggles at the start of the season, they’ll cut him after a month or two. Or, he’ll get “hurt.”

    • dave27 says:

      Hopefully he doesn’t struggle.

Marlon is a professional PH. Why people want a kid like Evans to waste away as the 25th man when he can be getting ABs in AAA (where he has yet to play) is beyond me.

People should appreciate what Marlon can do – in the mold of Rusty, Heep, MFranco, and Lenny Harris as professional – and dangerous – LH pinch-hitters. Once again, glad Omar is running the team and not metsblog.

      • gipper82475 says:

Ummm…Marlon was NEVER the hitter Rusty was…and recently, I think you could pull Rusty out of his current retirement/restaurant-owning/philanthropy and he would outhit Marlon’s current edition. The guy is TOAST.

After Alou, Pedro, Castillo, et al, you would think Omar (and you) would learn not to pay or make decisions based solely on long past performance.

        • PedroMANIA says:

Hopefully you were joking about Rusty outhitting a current MLB player at this point.

Anyway, I think dave’s point was that Marlon is a better fit for the 25th man than Evans is. I agree with him. Now if we are talking about starting positions than it obviously turns around.

          • gipper82475 says:

Now that is a potentially valid point. My point is Marlon looks like he may be done, even in the LH PH specialist role.

And, no I don’t think Rusty could actually outhit Marlon today. A joke to make a point about how done Marlon appears to be.

  13. GravediggerHebner says:

As it stands, the key LH and RH pinch hitters are Marlon Anderson and Fernando Tatis. To keep Nick Evans instead of Marlon Anderson, the key LH and RH pinch hitters are no one and Fernando Tatis, unless you want Jeremy Reed in that role, which would crimp the ability to use him as a defensive replacement.

    • jaydh says:

I would rather Sullivan than Anderson.

      • GravediggerHebner says:

So does it then become a question of Sullivan or Evans, because I don’t think you can have them both.

        • jaydh says:

I would keep up Evans, but for those that go the route of he needs more ABs to develop, then the answer is Sullivan.

    • dave27 says:

Great point – not to mention stunting Evans development.

He will be up when someone gets hurt and he can get consistent ABs.

      • Wanny2 says:

Evans could take on Tatis’ Utility role so that Evans can get at bats early on.

And I think Tatis can be the primary pinch hitter against lefties or righties. His career splits are almost identical: .262 .345 .440 v. R and .271 .348 .457 v. lefties.

If you need LH pinch hitter after Tatis has been used, you also have Cora.

        • PedroMANIA says:

Except from what JM has been saying, it doesn’t sounds like Tatis will be getting more than 1, MAYBE 2 starts a week. And thats not enough AB’s for Evans to grow.

  14. GravediggerHebner says:

I think for those who wish Nick Evans to stay on the roster beyond 4 games, the enemy is not Marlon Anderson, the enemy is Fernando Tatis.

    • Wanny2 says:

I’d agree only to the extent that the Mets may not want to experiment with a kid playing semi-regulalrly when they have a veteran who can handle the role.

But Tatis ability to be a “crossover” hitter shouldn’t preclude someone from making the roster based on the need for a LH hitter.

    • Cactus says:

not really, tatis can play the infield.

  15. fxcarden says:

    Marlon Anderson needs to retire.

  16. Wanny2 says:

I think everyone’s points regarding this last roster spot are valid and could have been decided by a coin flip.

Hopefully, the season will not come down to the availability of a particular pinch hitter.

But after two straight seasons were decided by one game margins, I guess we can not ignore any minor details.

Bring back Lenny Harris, Mark Carreon, Danny Heep, Rusty Staub, Lee Mazzilli and Jose Oquendo (hey, you never know when you’ll need one guy to play all 9 positions in one game).

  17. dewdrinker78 says:

I like the new bull pen. Especially with no Heilman…. I cant wait for the Cubs to come to Citi Field this year and hear the boos Heilman gets. Its gonna be great..

    • Cactus says:

met fans run all the wrong guys out of town. heilman got s c r e w e d over year after year thanks to the guru rick peterson, yet went out and still did his job well.

  18. LongTimeMetsFan says:

Anderson can play the infield whereas Keilty doesn’t. I think that’s the difference maker. I feel badly for Keilty…he deserved to make the cut. Anderson played hurt for much of last season so I won’t judge him on 2008. He’s healthy, lost weight and moving well and has history of fine pinch hitting.

    • PedroMANIA says:

I think Keilty will be on this team at some point during the year. Whether he is good enough to stay will be the question. He will get his shot.

    • Nate W. says:

Oh man… if Marlon plays anywhere other than LF there is a major problem…

at 1B he is behind Tatis (and Murphy if he had played any 1B this spring)
at 2B and 3B he is behind Cora and Tatis
      at SS … ok, nevermind…

  19. dave27 says:

Just an fyi, Sheffield was released with a year left on his deal. Detroit owes him $14MM, and whoever signs him gets him for $400K.

The Phillies also released Geoff Jenkins hours after Sheff was dumped.

I guarantee the Phillies take a flier here. They are so lefty-heavy, and Sheffield could easily platoon with Werth. I think he’s worth the flier and the block for the Mets – if he rebounds and drops into the Phillies laps for $400K, that is a big blow.

Apparently Omar laughed when Sheff was brought up – he might want to take this possible turn of events seriously….

    • dave27 says:

And to further the point, they were kicking the tires on Moises before he retired to fill this role…

    • Nate W. says:

Sheffield needs to stay in the AL where he can play mostly DH.

It’s also very disconcerning that the Tigers have no other DH and were set on releasing him. They would rather eat 14 mil then make Marcus Thames available on waivers. Marcus Thames? I think says all there is to say about Sheffield.

Specifically on the Mets, he would be a good part time LF, if it wasnt for all the baggage.
But then the Tigers would have kept him, if it wasnt for all the baggage…

  20. gruff says:

When are the mets going to fill in the gray space on the scoreboards with ads….
It looks kind of bad…not horrendous..just a little blah..
I hope its not b/c of the economy…I don’t think it is but just speculating…

  21. eric23 says:

so does anyone know if kielty goes to AAA or he becomes a FA? If he is at AAA and Marlon struggles for the first month then I want Marlon cut and Kielty or Evans brought up.

  22. just-mlb says:

    No Merengue Night?!!?

    WTF !?!?

I’m upset…I think the mets just missed out on a great opportunity to put fannies in the seats…

  25. scoopcoopdoop says:

No unexpected moves with the roster. I think whomever pointed out that Anderson is the primary lefty PH is correct.

If he is not on the team, there is no lefty PH—Reed is a defensive replacement for Murphy unless he can improve. He looks pretty unsteady out there.

  26. quikag182 says:

No one has mentioned it, so I’m going to. Someone is going to get hurt. It’s going to happen. They will go to the DL and be replaced by one of the guys we’re discussing. As much as I don’t want to see it happen, and won’t jinx anyone with names, it’s a foregone conclusion. We will probably see some of each of these guys this year. Where they start out is moot.

  27. DWrightMVP says:

    YES!!!!! NICK EVANS!!!!!!

  28. vic79 says:

so could that Nieve dude not have been sent to AAA?

ahhh wells enough options for call ups

Evans is gonna be a damn good ball player. Only a matter of time till he takes a permanent role. Anderson is gone if not later this year then next for sure anyways

    • Nate W. says:

Nieve will have to clear waivers to go to AAA.

He is on the 40 man roster and out of options (just like Stokes) because the Mets claimed him off of waivers.

  29. methead says:

Evans will be a career 4th outfielder, at best.

  30. just-mlb says:

people said that about melvin mora…he ended up as a decent 3B
