Dave Singer of NY Sports Dog posts a long list of celebrity Mets fans, including, among others, Robert DeNiro, Jerry Seinfeld, Nas, Bill O’Reilly, Joe Klein and John McEnroe.
So long as we’re on the subject, I really, really hope Citi Field ditches the celebrity Mets fan rally video on the scoreboard, especially the Kevin James one, which used to give me nightmares. Nothing against him, because I like James and enjoy his comedy, but there was something about that video that was demonic.
If you’re unaware, the Mets filmed a variety of ‘celebrity Mets fans,’ while out at Shea Stadium last season, each wearing a Mets hat, yelling at fans to clap and cheer and say, ‘Lets Go Mets.’ In most every case, it was awkward and felt forced, and never really inspired the crowd.
One of the great things about baseball is that there are the players on the field, and then the rest of us behind them, in the stands, rooting them on. Those are the two groups: players and fans, working together as one. It’s not the Mets on the filed, then the fans, then Kevin James, Jerry Seinfeld and the rest of Hollywood.
I’d rather see Vito and the Citi Field audio-visual team hit up some average fan in the stands, live, and get that person to rally a cheer on the screen, assuming this has to take place at all. And if that random fan happens to be Seinfeld, or me, or you, or James, or any one else in attendance that night, great. But, believe me, I want the Mets to win, score runs, etc., on my own, because I am a fan; I don’t need a comedian or movie star to tell me when to cheer or be inspired.

I liked the Chris Rock and the Kevin James, becuase of the amplitude of their voices SCREAMING in them…I’d be driving in the car listening to Howie and the mets would load the bases and I could hear in the background Kevin James bangin on about putting down your hot dogs and getting out of their chairs, I would get mad souped in my car scream out the window, punch the dashboard and yell at other drivers.
LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS!
Yeah..I loved those…really funny..I would’nt mind them playing it at Citi
I believe Chris Rock is also a fan.
Nas really fell off, huh?
I predict he will be doing a reality show any day now.
He just dropped an album a few months ago, was pretty good.
Yeah, but Illmatic is so great that even if it was his only release he would still be pretty important….but while none of the rest of his CDs are close to Illmatic, some of them are pretty darn good, and underrated….
Although I agree with you that Illmatic was amazing, his entire body of work is just ok in my opinion. Illmatic came out 15 years ao so you’re showing you’re age… as am I.
Oh c’mon now. Illmatic is the classic everybody loves to mention but seriously now – Stillmatic was unbelievable. The Lost Tapes may be my favorite nas cd and Hip Hop is Dead was incredible as well. To be honest I thought his latest CD was trash. As was that double cd he put out a few years ago, disciple something. Nas has had the type of career that you just don’t question if he’s falling off. Respect the game.
Tom Cruise is a Yankees fan and so is Hillary Clinton…hahahha
Negative, pelf. Nas recently released an “untitled album” that was slated to be called N**GER but was changed last minute for the obvious reasons.
NAGER?
I’m familiar with all of his work but all of the music he’s released recently is pretty much garbage and doesn’t get any press.
Actually BigPelf, his last few albums are really really good.
Agree to disagree.
I agree 718….they can’t touch Illmatic, but few CDs by anyone can….
didnt illmatic come out years ago….
the last blip nas has on the radar screen was his feud with jay-z. After that like i said a serious afterthought.
agreed dirty… Ether was the song at Jay. That was 8 years ago.
That feud is so old, it is over…Nas guested on a Jay-Z CD recently….
im with bigpelf on this one. Nas is an afterthought at best in his genre. Faliure to adapt to the times i guess but he has not dropped anything noteworthy in quite some time.
When you get more press over marrying the lyrical genius that sang ‘MIlkshake’ then you do over your albums being released, it’s probably time to hang up the mic. The only reason his last album got any pub was because of the controversial name, which he later dropped.
so a rapper who sings about licking a lillipop is better?
no but that rapper right now is more popular that nas. They are not on the same playing field right now
Gotta say, yes Nas would have very little rep were it not for the 15-year-old Illmatic, and none of his CDs since are better than very good, if that. I like It Was Written a lot too, but that is over a decade old…I just think his stuff since then is a little better than it gets credit for being.
And yes 718, I am afraid that Jay-Z does kick Nas’ butt with both feet….American Gangster, his latest, has a lot of great stuff on it. And Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, and Black Album all are far better than anything of Nas’ other than Illmatic….
His albums dont get any press cause he doesnt rap about doing the new 1-2 step n clap yo fingers dance.
He doesn’t get any press mostly because he succks these days.
ALL MUSIC SUCKS THESE DAYS, I STOPPED LISTENING. TURN OFF THE RADIO IT’S THE DEVIL SOUND. PAY FOR PLAY IS BS
No. He doesn’t get press because he doesn’t generally put out the weak watered down hot 97 radio garbage. You know who gets press? Little Wayne. Young Jeezey. I dont even know these cats today. They’re absolute trash. Catchy beats with idiotic words. Nas keeps his lyrics full of spiritual/positive concepts.
I think it’s the guy Cam’ron who has a new song out on the radio – correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s called “Cookies with some Applie Juice” and that line is screamed on and on throughout the song. If Cookies with some Apple Juice gets press, that only means press means nothing when talking about real quality hip hop.
again, the sickest nas albums: Lost Tapes, Illmatic, Stillmatic, Hip Hop is Dead, and even Nastradamous. Of course I doubt most of you have listened to these CDs outside the few radio hits he’s put out so there’s no point in arguing.
Actually Boscov I have all of Nas’s albums. I agree with you that hip-hop today is pretty bad but I don’t think the stuff Nas has put out lately has been great either.
paula— YANKEES FOR SCIENTOLOGY LOL
The worst part about the Kevin James part was that the timing of the last two “Let’s Go Mets” was slightly off…and it threw off the entire crowd.
THAT was the point of it.
Yeah, I kind of like it – in a ‘it’s a train wreck but you can’t take your eyes off it’ sort of way.
I thought it was kinda funny.
true dat he did say it with an odd rhythm
the other day my friend and i were trying to figure out if steve guttenberg is a mets or yankee fan, but couldn’t figure it out, and the internet couldn’t answer it for us either, does anyone here know?
when we have to result in finding out if Steve Guttenberg is a Met fan or not, that means we desperately need to have better celebrity fans!
i don’t know about that – “We live in a society of laws! Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun?”
i dont know, but i know that number johnny 5 is a mets fan all the way
Bill O’Reily…hahah
“Lets Go Mets…lets do it again!!!!!, forget it i’ll do it live!!!!!”
hahahah
Now that video clip would be a celebrity rally call.
professor reyes should be the only canned material throughout the baseball game. that and the train or plane race which would be impossible now with 25 different sections. HERE COMES EBBETS FIELD GOLD, BUT NO WAIT, LEFT FIELD CLUB PLATINUM IS RIGHT BEHIND HIM!
i agree completely matt, they distract us with their scoreboard nonsense way too often for my liking. especially when you go to more than three games a year and you are subject to the same kevin james video over and over and over. they literally BLAST “EVERYBODY CLAP YOUR HANDS.” We know when to clap, we aren’t mentally retarted.
The everybody clap your hands is probably the most annoying thing ever.
when it comes on, i jubiliantly yell, “EV RY BODY CRAP YOUR PANTS, CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP”
I thought I was the only one! My long lost brother, at last we meet.
Every-bo-dy clap your hands! is way more annoying than Kevin James. I was really hoping to not have to hear it this year, but I already heard it during spring training. Not a good sign…
As for this post, I have no problem with James, Rock or even Darryl starting the Let’s Go Mets chant. We’re not forced to follow them and we are also allowed to start it any time we want without them. I think the James skit is actually funny.
isnt alyssa milano a met fan? or is she a fan of certain players? =D
lol that is the question lol……im guessing the latter
the idea of Bill O’Reily cheering for anyone besides himself is simply astonishing.
alyssa milanos a dodgers fan….they needa get Dave C from NJ on the scoreboard ill go through the stands and knock out phillies fans one by one and wave a giant mets pennant in the other hand
they do those chants so the fans will wake up… most of the time they are half asleep or wandering looking at other fans, girls, girls, girls.
I’d like to see a video of Olbermann and O’Reilly coming together to root for the Mets.
i would pay to see that lol….not happening anytime soon!!
now that would be interesting.
and if i ever saw bill o’reilly in the stands, i’d spit on him
…really mature. Spitting on someone is such a cowardly thing to do.
Anyway, then you would get tossed out and banned from Citi Field which would make it a much better place.
BILL O REILLY IS A TALKING HEAD AND A JERK
So i take it you prefer Keith Oberman, but hes not a talking head right? hes a profoundly brilliant opinionated journalist…..you are a jacka-s-s
Actually, they both S U C K.
They and all others of their ilk make millions by spewing hypocrisy and nonsense.
They are both part of the same disease.
fair enough at least youre showing no bias. virtually all members of the television news media are cashing in and just towing the company line.
I agree Zeile and I try to see this realistically…the people who believe in Olbermann are just as deluded as those who believe in O’Reilly…..reality and truth definitely lies somewhere in the middle of those two and their type….
Not only is the Kevin James chant irritating, it is legitimately cursed. I have been to Mets, Knicks, and Rangers games in which Kevin James has attempted to rally the crowd, and the team has lost EVERY SINGLE TIME. King of Queens could be funny, I’m sure Chuck and Larry wasnt that bad, and I’m sure Kevin James himself is a perfectly nice man. That being said, if he is a legitimate fan (which I doubt, considering the last Knick game I went to he was wearing a “Paul Blart” hat and no team gear) then he will do us all a favor and catch the games on SNY. Please Kevin James, leave it to the professionals….Like Cowbellman
If you’re going to question Kevin James’ fanship of the Mets, I suggest you watch King of Queens, or Chuck and Larry where he’s ALWAYS wearing Mets apparel. In fact, in Chuck & Larry the girl playing his duaghter is sporting a whole mets outfit.
agreed dave…safe to say imo james is the real deal.
I’m sorry, and I might catch heat for this, but after seeing Cowbellman on Beer Money and watch his fail miserably on Mets trivia (he couldn’t even get past the $20 question, and even struggled with the $10 question), it’s hard for me to annoint Cowbellman as the posterboy for all great Met fans.
him* fail miserably, my mistake.
Just for the record, I believe the correct spelling is Cow-bellman.
Doesn’t it depend on what jersey he’s wearing?
Maybe. I think most of the ones I’ve seen have Cow-Bellman, but he could have it spelled otherwise elsewhere. I like to think he’s the son of a woman named Cow and a guy named Bellman who gave him a hyphenated last name, and he took up the cowbell later.
Your scenario is much more tasteful than mine. Mine involves a cow checking into a hotel, and a bellman who carries her bags up to her room that develops a certain attraction toward the cow, and so on.
I want Kevin James screaming LETS GO METS! to boom through the stadium anytime a Met is in scoring position for the entire season. Home or Away.
Three words: Peter Finch. “Network.”
“I’m mad as h*ll and I’m not gonna take!” Rockin’!
that is the best Mets scoreboard video. It always results in a perfectly sync loud LETS GO METS throughout the stadium.
*in sync
ewwwwwwww bill oriley………
I don’t really care just as long as I never have to see Bill O’Reilly leading a cheer for my Mets on some scoreboard.
lol if i didnt love the mets as much as i do, i would have jumped ship knowing that oriley likes them. I would have swore that oriley was a philly fan…especially with his man crush on will smith
BILL o’REILLY —- DIAF
OK Dave, you got me…when you said it about Hamels, I thought it might be inappropriate, but in this context, it works!!
:-)
im almost afraid to ask what it means but what does it mean lol
DaveC y r u so angry? Damn relax a little opening day is only a few days away.
I am angry because during the beginning of the Iraq war, my friend wrote a letter to Bill O’reilly asking him what he thought of the fact that americans had killed more civilians in iraq than american casualties. The letter was Completely reworded, saying that more insurgents were killed by americans, and making him sound like he was supporting Iraq. F bill o reilly, F his writers, and F Fox news and their compeletey biased “fair and balanced” reporting….I find it extremely conspicuous that they had ad space in shea stadium along the right/left field over hang near mezz.
Did your friend also ask Bill O’reilly what he thought about Saddam Hussein killijng 2,000,000 Iraqi citizens?
Honestly…Metsblog is no place for your politics. If you don’t like O’reilly, don’t watch him.
Do you know which government and which political party in the US and which right-wing media folks supported Saddam when he was killing his own people in the 1980s and early 1990s??
Check it out–it is pretty interesting!!
welcome to metsblog. we talk about the mets here not politics. the right wing is always wrong we can’t do anything right (ironic), all hail the left, change hope and all that crap. ok now can we please move on to baseball.
Yes sir, back to baseball!!
And music if necessary……
Zeile–sorry if I wasn’t clear there, but the left AND the right in gov’t and the media supported Saddam’s slaughter, no doubt about it…..Carter’s gov’t liked him as much as Reagan’s did….
that wasnt really aimed much at you more at the other two guys arguing over the war. like we always say this is a baseball/mets blog so staying on topic is in our best interest since there are plenty of people on this site from both sides of the argument.
Agreed 100%.
I rather see kevin james than some fan in the stands. Only wish he did it more in rythem with the actual chant.
Watching that video numerous times last year had me thinking…how close was he to a heart attack!
the kevin james james thing used to make me really angry. he was trying to be cool by saying it all off rhythm but came off looking like a huge tool. the way he would say it, i have no clue why the mets would put that over the loud speakers at all, nevermind multiple times at every single game
i much prefer ‘ev–ry–bo–dy–clap–yo–hands’. i usually get into that one for some reason
gross
oh god i LOATHE everybody clap your hands. its just so annoying and the clapping is too fast paced it sounds more childish than intimidating to opposing teams.
Hahaha that is so true! I was wondering if anyone would mention that timing issue with the James vid. That annoyed me to no end.
Otherwise I didnt mind the videos, just that they got really old, really fast.
If they had a bunch of them that they didnt play all the time and just cycled in every once in a while that would be better.
PS the music they played at Shea sucked
I have no problem with them getting James or what not, like when he was actually htere premoting the film, but they don’t need to do it every game for months after the film bombs..
i hope the exhibition game on Friday doesn’t get rained out. i am really looking forward to it. there is some crappy weather coming our way in NY.
Anyone one here francessa saying that Jeter retired today, he might not make the HoF today. He brought up the new offensive shortstops that he’ll be compared. He brought he brought up Hanley and Rollins… but NO Reyes! Mike just admit you hate the Mets already.
although I’m shocked, he didn’t think jeter was a sure lock for Hof
dude what are you talking about i was watching the simulcast on YES and francessa said he would take reyes over rollins…and the studio guy was arguing wiht him!
If that’s true, I take it back. I just watched the 5min where he said Rollins and Hanley are on pace to put better numbers than Jeter
francessa is what he is, he doesnt like the mets and will never give them credit. the one thing that ticks me off in sports media is when jimmy rollins is referred to as a “young talented shortstop” with ramirez and reyes. HES 30! Im not denying his ability but hes FIVE years older than reyes and ramirez.
He’s mentally separating himself from the ‘jeter is god’ mentality so he can be ‘right’ when Jeter has a crappy year.
haha
vito doesnt know what hes doing. all the music that you hear (and hate) is his choice.
he does not know how to connect with the fans. dont get your hopes up this year mets fans. new ballpark, new closer, same crappy music
Most of it is so repetitive, I long ago stopped noticing it. Really the only thing that stuck out for me was Kevin James, who I have to give credit to for going off beat. Very little originality otherwise. When they stop simply ripping off things that are being done in other parks around the league, and set, not follow, a trend, I’ll be impressed. New York City is supposed to be some sort of media mecca, but it’s hard to tell that at a Met game. Using “Sweet Caroline” was the low point IMO.
Thanks for all the great additions to the list.
It’s almost Opening day Matt!
Bring back the Curly Shuffle!
While they’re at it, how about Bluto rallying the Deltas, too? “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”
And yes, please, let’ come up with some original material. Cripes, we play in the media capital of the world!
wow DeNiro is a Mets fan? Didnt know that.. awesome to hear hes one of my fav. actors
I don’t care what anyone says, I am all about those celebrity pump-ups. Kevin James never creeped me out… I always thought his was the BEST! It was only really inappropriate when the Mets were down by 5+ runs and fans were leaving the ballpark and the video had no effect… That was just sad…
i like kevin james alot hes also one of my fav. actors.. and seems like one of the BIGGER celebrity mets fans
What about Mick Foley? Does he count as a celebrity? Best-selling author, professional wrestler (dudelove, mankind, cactus jack), he goes to a lot of games I think, but I don’t think he wants to be noticed.
lol hes a Mets fan?? where did u learn that?
Foley’s always at games, I’ve seen him there a couple of times. He signs for people and stuff. Seems like a good guy, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Forget McFoley, we have Apu Nahasapeemapetalon. i think I heard him say the Nye Mets were his favorite squadron.
Hank Azaria is a real Mets fan too. Hes awesome.
I miss the Howard Beale speach, “get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell…”. They always played that when the team was rallying and the crowd new what was coming. That Let’s Go Mets chant was alway rockin. They stopped playing that when the celeb ones came along.
Olbermann is a Yankees fan.
they should make a graphic with a bouncing jimmy rollins head that bounces across the words lets go mets and the words have giant spikes on top
Rule of Thumb: Kevin James on Diamond Vision = awful.
Can’t believe anyone would actually join in on that “chant”….it was embarrassing.
It should have been canned when it started in ’07….nevermind the year-past-expiration in ’08.
Hopefully it’s nowhere near Citi.
I usually don’t give a crap about celebrity fans, and get really annoyed when the camera finds them, and the broadcasters lose their !@# over them (Fran Healy was the worse about this. Oh my God, it’s Jerry Seinfeld!) I especially hate when they visit the booth when they have something to plug.
Two exceptions:
1) Back in the ’80s, Judy Tenuta visited the booth, and made a lasting impression on McCarver, Zabriskie and Kiner, to the point that during a Cubs game, Ralph said “Here comes that crazy love god, Don Zimmer.”
2) A few years ago, Tim Robbins was in the booth, presumably to plug something, but was so into the game that he hardly said anything. Good for him!
Although I agree with Cerrone’s take on Kevin James’s attempt to be a cheerleader, you have to admit that references to the Mets are prevalent in his show and in his movies. He somehow injects his characters with that aspect from his own life, which is pretty die-hard if you ask me.
