Note: Celebrity Fans on Scoreboard

By Matthew Cerrone on Apr 01, 2009, 4:21 pm

Dave Singer of NY Sports Dog posts a long list of celebrity Mets fans, including, among others, Robert DeNiro, Jerry Seinfeld, Nas, Bill O’Reilly, Joe Klein and John McEnroe.

So long as we’re on the subject, I really, really hope Citi Field ditches the celebrity Mets fan rally video on the scoreboard, especially the Kevin James one, which used to give me nightmares.  Nothing against him, because I like James and enjoy his comedy, but there was something about that video that was demonic.

If you’re unaware, the Mets filmed a variety of ‘celebrity Mets fans,’ while out at Shea Stadium last season, each wearing a Mets hat, yelling at fans to clap and cheer and say, ‘Lets Go Mets.’  In most every case, it was awkward and felt forced, and never really inspired the crowd.

One of the great things about baseball is that there are the players on the field, and then the rest of us behind them, in the stands, rooting them on.  Those are the two groups: players and fans, working together as one.  It’s not the Mets on the filed, then the fans, then Kevin James, Jerry Seinfeld and the rest of Hollywood.

I’d rather see Vito and the Citi Field audio-visual team hit up some average fan in the stands, live, and get that person to rally a cheer on the screen, assuming this has to take place at all.  And if that random fan happens to be Seinfeld, or me, or you, or James, or any one else in attendance that night, great.  But, believe me, I want the Mets to win, score runs, etc., on my own, because I am a fan; I don’t need a comedian or movie star to tell me when to cheer or be inspired.

I liked the Chris Rock and the Kevin James, becuase of the amplitude of their voices SCREAMING in them…I’d be driving in the car listening to Howie and the mets would load the bases and I could hear in the background Kevin James bangin on about putting down your hot dogs and getting out of their chairs, I would get mad souped in my car scream out the window, punch the dashboard and yell at other drivers.

LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS! LET’S GO METS!

Yeah, but Illmatic is so great that even if it was his only release he would still be pretty important….but while none of the rest of his CDs are close to Illmatic, some of them are pretty darn good, and underrated….

Although I agree with you that Illmatic was amazing, his entire body of work is just ok in my opinion. Illmatic came out 15 years ao so you’re showing you’re age… as am I.

Oh c’mon now. Illmatic is the classic everybody loves to mention but seriously now – Stillmatic was unbelievable. The Lost Tapes may be my favorite nas cd and Hip Hop is Dead was incredible as well. To be honest I thought his latest CD was trash. As was that double cd he put out a few years ago, disciple something. Nas has had the type of career that you just don’t question if he’s falling off. Respect the game.

When you get more press over marrying the lyrical genius that sang ‘MIlkshake’ then you do over your albums being released, it’s probably time to hang up the mic. The only reason his last album got any pub was because of the controversial name, which he later dropped.

Gotta say, yes Nas would have very little rep were it not for the 15-year-old Illmatic, and none of his CDs since are better than very good, if that. I like It Was Written a lot too, but that is over a decade old…I just think his stuff since then is a little better than it gets credit for being.

And yes 718, I am afraid that Jay-Z does kick Nas’ butt with both feet….American Gangster, his latest, has a lot of great stuff on it. And Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, and Black Album all are far better than anything of Nas’ other than Illmatic….

            Apr 01, 2009, 5:04 pm at 5:04 pm #

No. He doesn’t get press because he doesn’t generally put out the weak watered down hot 97 radio garbage. You know who gets press? Little Wayne. Young Jeezey. I dont even know these cats today. They’re absolute trash. Catchy beats with idiotic words. Nas keeps his lyrics full of spiritual/positive concepts.

I think it’s the guy Cam’ron who has a new song out on the radio – correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s called “Cookies with some Applie Juice” and that line is screamed on and on throughout the song. If Cookies with some Apple Juice gets press, that only means press means nothing when talking about real quality hip hop.

again, the sickest nas albums: Lost Tapes, Illmatic, Stillmatic, Hip Hop is Dead, and even Nastradamous. Of course I doubt most of you have listened to these CDs outside the few radio hits he’s put out so there’s no point in arguing.

Not only is the Kevin James chant irritating, it is legitimately cursed. I have been to Mets, Knicks, and Rangers games in which Kevin James has attempted to rally the crowd, and the team has lost EVERY SINGLE TIME. King of Queens could be funny, I’m sure Chuck and Larry wasnt that bad, and I’m sure Kevin James himself is a perfectly nice man. That being said, if he is a legitimate fan (which I doubt, considering the last Knick game I went to he was wearing a “Paul Blart” hat and no team gear) then he will do us all a favor and catch the games on SNY. Please Kevin James, leave it to the professionals….Like Cowbellman

Honestly…Metsblog is no place for your politics. If you don’t like O’reilly, don’t watch him.

Do you know which government and which political party in the US and which right-wing media folks supported Saddam when he was killing his own people in the 1980s and early 1990s??

Check it out–it is pretty interesting!!

Zeile–sorry if I wasn’t clear there, but the left AND the right in gov’t and the media supported Saddam’s slaughter, no doubt about it…..Carter’s gov’t liked him as much as Reagan’s did….

the kevin james james thing used to make me really angry. he was trying to be cool by saying it all off rhythm but came off looking like a huge tool. the way he would say it, i have no clue why the mets would put that over the loud speakers at all, nevermind multiple times at every single game

Hahaha that is so true! I was wondering if anyone would mention that timing issue with the James vid. That annoyed me to no end.

Otherwise I didnt mind the videos, just that they got really old, really fast.

If they had a bunch of them that they didnt play all the time and just cycled in every once in a while that would be better.

PS the music they played at Shea sucked

I have no problem with them getting James or what not, like when he was actually htere premoting the film, but they don’t need to do it every game for months after the film bombs..

Anyone one here francessa saying that Jeter retired today, he might not make the HoF today. He brought up the new offensive shortstops that he’ll be compared. He brought he brought up Hanley and Rollins… but NO Reyes! Mike just admit you hate the Mets already.

although I’m shocked, he didn’t think jeter was a sure lock for Hof

francessa is what he is, he doesnt like the mets and will never give them credit. the one thing that ticks me off in sports media is when jimmy rollins is referred to as a “young talented shortstop” with ramirez and reyes. HES 30! Im not denying his ability but hes FIVE years older than reyes and ramirez.

Most of it is so repetitive, I long ago stopped noticing it. Really the only thing that stuck out for me was Kevin James, who I have to give credit to for going off beat. Very little originality otherwise. When they stop simply ripping off things that are being done in other parks around the league, and set, not follow, a trend, I’ll be impressed. New York City is supposed to be some sort of media mecca, but it’s hard to tell that at a Met game. Using “Sweet Caroline” was the low point IMO.

I don’t care what anyone says, I am all about those celebrity pump-ups. Kevin James never creeped me out… I always thought his was the BEST! It was only really inappropriate when the Mets were down by 5+ runs and fans were leaving the ballpark and the video had no effect… That was just sad…

I miss the Howard Beale speach, “get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell…”. They always played that when the team was rallying and the crowd new what was coming. That Let’s Go Mets chant was alway rockin. They stopped playing that when the celeb ones came along.

Rule of Thumb: Kevin James on Diamond Vision = awful.

Can’t believe anyone would actually join in on that “chant”….it was embarrassing.

It should have been canned when it started in ’07….nevermind the year-past-expiration in ’08.

    Hopefully it’s nowhere near Citi.

I usually don’t give a crap about celebrity fans, and get really annoyed when the camera finds them, and the broadcasters lose their !@# over them (Fran Healy was the worse about this. Oh my God, it’s Jerry Seinfeld!) I especially hate when they visit the booth when they have something to plug.

    Two exceptions:
    1) Back in the ’80s, Judy Tenuta visited the booth, and made a lasting impression on McCarver, Zabriskie and Kiner, to the point that during a Cubs game, Ralph said “Here comes that crazy love god, Don Zimmer.”

    2) A few years ago, Tim Robbins was in the booth, presumably to plug something, but was so into the game that he hardly said anything. Good for him!

Although I agree with Cerrone’s take on Kevin James’s attempt to be a cheerleader, you have to admit that references to the Mets are prevalent in his show and in his movies. He somehow injects his characters with that aspect from his own life, which is pretty die-hard if you ask me.
