Update, 11:40 am:
The tarp is on the field, the wind is swirling, and there is sleet and rain falling from the grey sky, but there is no indication yet from the stadium that the game will be called or delayed.
So, Mets players emerged from a team-only meeting with Jerry Manuel, and are now warming up on the field.
Original Post:
The Weather Channel projects it will be around 40 degrees at game time in Cincinnati, with a 50 percent chance of rain, 20 mph winds, and a slight chance of snow later in the day.
…the word is, it is raining pretty hard, and it’s
frigid… the game in Chicago has already been canceled, by the way…
According to WFAN’s Ed Coleman, speaking on air a few moments ago, players have been telling him they feel the game will be played.
…the thing is, tomorrow is supposed to be a bit better, and it’s an off day…
…what’s most bothersome, i’d hate to see Johan Santana warm up, go out there for an inning, there be a massive delay, or the game is called, and then santana doesn’t pitch again until later in the week…

I was hoping today's game won't be cancelled, I've been following the weather in Cincinnati all day. I know a 50 percent chance of rain isn't 100 percent, but it doesn't look good from here. I hate it when Mets games that are televised on national TV are cancelled…
If you know the weather folks, then you should know that the only time you see a 90% or more chance of rain is if it's already raining, or just about to. What for meteorologists is 50%, for us plain people that translates to 75% – 80%
I'm not confident they will play
if the weather's gonna be similar tomorrow, I want them to get it in today, or just postpone it til later in the season. I HATE the idea that we wouldn't get our first game Opening Day, but it's a marathon.
It's not our home opener, so I don't think it matters if it's postponed one day
I still think it's gonna be played…
Prismo, your Garry Sheffield prediction didn't work out….credibility is shot! :)
Haha, SHUSH. Don't worry, that was my last "Prismo Guarantee." I promise!
I just think the game will get played tonight, but I make no guarantees!
Spring training just doesn't want to end…ugh
Good comment on Santana, Matt. No one would want to lose a 2 start week from Santana at the beginning of their fantasy league season!
If the game is canceled with the Public House event proceed?
I am in Cincy now and hope the game is not played. It is only going to get colder and is raining now and 30 miles to the northwest of downtown it is snowing. I would rather just go tomorrow.
Write your comment here…
For some reason, every year the Ohio area is always hit with severe weather at the start of each MLB campaign. You would think Cincy needed a dome when the stadium was built. LOL. What about the new stadium for Minnesota? It's not a dome. Imagine the harsh weather they will endure each April.
I was talking to some food vendors at the Dome in Minny last year and they were all perplexed at the decision to have an outdoor stadium. It's cold until July and cold again in September. NO ONE is gonna go to these games.
Not for nothin' we should have built a retractable dome too.
I believe they will do everything possible to get the game in on opening day, and hey I guess with 20 mph winds there we should be glad that Adam Dunn is not still there with the Reds.
But it would be fun to see him tracking down flyballs in the outfield.
lol you are right about that. I was just thinking from an offensive standpoint, but that would be great.
I could not imagine picthing in these conditions and would hate to see Santana get hurt
The game in Chicago was postponed, not canceled. There's a big difference.
Actually, that is a really silly comment. We all know what it meant.
Kinda rude, Jeff
The new stadium in Minny does have a retractable roof, doesn't it?
Yes, but they are getting a new open stadium.
Just my luck I took a day off today just for opening day
Mother Nature is clearly not a baseball fan.
Ha!
I wouldn't want to see Santana or any of our players get injured, believe it or not, he's not the only player on the team, geez Louise!!!!
Would postponing today's game mean that Santana would start tomorrow and then opening day at Citi?
Way to nit-pick
no, hes not the only player on the team, OssMetsFan, just the most important one.
He's the best starting pitcher in the league, and would be the most difficult player to replace– with the possible exception of Carlos Beltran– where he to suffer a season-ending injury.
If, G-d forbid, Reyes or Wright or Delgado were to go down, it's possible that someone– Cora, Tatis, or Evans… or Sheff– could step in and provide a reasonable facsimile of their offensive numbers for a 2-month period (not likely, but possible). There is NO such replacement for Santana– can you see Niese, Redding or Garcia doing what he did over the last two months last year?
where is that written? i would love to see it, everyone else is immaterial, that's disgusting, slap in the face to the guys who bust their butts more than every fourth game
Well, if we had to choose one player of the 25 not to get hurt and miss one game, who would we choose??
CLEARLY Johan. And I love this team for decades, and Wright, Jose, Beltran, KRod and JJ are all indispensable to this team, but Johan, as Seaver was, is clearly numero uno in terms of importance….and that shows ZERO disrespect to anyone else.
Whatever…… i wasn't disrespecting Santana, but why everyone totally idolizes him above everyone eise is truly disgusting.
i'm entitled to my opinion just like everyone else, and what everyone does is 100% disrespectful, he makes the most money of people on the team, not to say he hasn't earned it, but he does need to step and play under less than ideal circumstances.
santana is the most important player on this team. it doesn't need to be written anywhere. it's the truth. if he goes down, this team struggles mightily.
Obviously losing one of our better every day players (reyes, wright, beltran, delgado) would be devistating, but losing Johan would be worse than any of them. I'm worried about our staff enough with him there, I don't even want to think about what it would be like without him.
They should be able to start and get the game in it might start late but the radar shows that they are towards the backend of the storm…….it should be passed by at least 1:30-2:00
Worse case, the game is played then in the 3rd inning there is a long delay, and Johan is taken out of the game.I don't want to see it,I would rather wait til tomorrow when the weather is better.
please stop raining….i have baseball fever!
I'm so psyched about today's game…
Calling all Met Fans… Let's do a stop rain dance for us and Cincy.
If it is postponed until tomorrow I really hope it is a night game…otherwise I'm going to have to miss it as I used today as my traditional "Opening Day cut class" day
It should be, there's more rain projected for tomorrow afternoon. That would make sense, so you know, the MLB probably WONT do it.
Does anyone know if the game will be available via streaming radio on either WFAN or ESPN? Usually, the games do not stream on WFAN.com.
I really hope they play the game today, I've been counting the days till opening day. I'm so pumped right now. I'm at work, mets cap on, and I'm definitely gonna be sneaking away to a TV at 1pm. I've been checking the weather in Cincy since a week ago and I don't know if I can wait 1 more day.
its only snow showers…i think the game will be played.
As long as Santana gets the Win, I don't care when they play.
they will play! enough with these guys getting hurt! it's a bit chilly…they dont make men like they used to
mlb really needs to implement a policy of strictly having early april teams with domes and teams in florida/california being the only teams to be home, its ridiculous every year theres these snowouts
I agree!!!
I really hope they make it out there today – I don't want my day off from work to be for naught, especially since I have an unmissable class tomorrow afternoon. That said, players' health has to come first – not just injuries and the like, but I don't fancy playing the first three weeks of the season with half the lineup out with the flu.
Whatever is safest for EVERYONE is the key, not just HRH Santana. Postponing until tomorrow makes sense since it was an off day anyway. Yes you can replace position players, but its not the same, the same way that replacing starting pitchers is not the same. We learned that last year when John Maine went down, that's all i'm saying, there are 25 men on the roster, why hold 1 heads and shoulders above everyone else, think about it people before you blast me.
Dude, what is the problem here?
If you asked 100 fans, and everyone in the Met organization which player was the most key to the team's success, EVERY one–but you–would say Johan.
Just like they would have said Seaver in his day.
He is the hardest to replace, without question. Losing KRod or JJ would be bad, but either one of them can close. Losing Jose, Wright or Beltran would be awful, but we would still score a lot of runs.
Losing Johan would be by far the most devastating, and that is not raising him to HRH status or dissing anyone else.
This is a very strange and senseless battle you are choosing to attempt to wage…..
And had the bullpen saved one or two more games, we still would have made the postseason, despite Maine's injury…..and I love Maine.
I'm cutting class today, they better play….
One of my classes got cancelled today which enables me to see this game, so I REALLY hope they play as well
I will never understand why MLB opens games in very cold cities such as Chicago and Detroit so early in April.
Hopefully it clears up. There nothing like opening day. Big season. Off-season complaints behind and ready for the run. Though I admit it won't be until September that the team can prove something.
Skipped class today to catch the game.
I'm assuming they'll get the game in today even if it's delayed a few hours. Crappy weather though, cold, windy, and wet sucks.
Here's to hoping we get to see a Mets game at some point today.
i hope this does not go down like last year that it seemed there was 100 rain delays for the first part of the season.
You keep saying "disgusting"….I don't think it means what you think it means…..
it disgusts me, i'm a loyal fan who watched 150 plus games last year and attended 15 games in person, so i do know what i am talking about, i'm not retarded, as you seem to be implying…..
I think these teams did well by planning off days like that. They just did the same min Boston. I know I would be pissed next week if the home opener was cancelled and my uber expensive tickets were no longer special.
As much as I am looking forward to this game , I really think they should PPD game until tomorrow.
Come to think…Opening Day is a legit holiday in Cincy. They close schools and some businesses as well. You'd have to think they wouldn't want that day off to go to waste and so they'll wait as long as they need to to get it in today.
Wishful thinking…but hey I don't want to miss a potential opener tomorrow. Let's Go Mother Nature!
I'm listening on XM and they carry ESPN 1050 this time of day. Shockingly Skank fan Brandon Tierney is ripping the Mets pitching staff, saying the Mets are in HUGE trouble. Hey moron, the season hasn't even started yet. Do any NY sports channels feature guys that aren't total Skank homers? Also begs the question: Why is this zero on SNY doing the Wheelhouse?
how many crazy people are in here. How could you miss a day of class or from work for a stupid baseball game (baseball should be something u watch during your free time). The baseball players dont give a damn about you, but you want to miss work and college for them. CRAZY!
Don't tell me what to do with my personal days.
Anyway, shouldn't you be running off to class or work?
Your right How dare Fans wants to watch there team open the season instead of work or class You are so right and I think they should do away with weekends Why give people off at all Thats what life is all about work and work
Why are you here? Shouldn't you be working or in class?
im here because i got laid off.
If you have a job, why risk losing it for a baseball game.
If I don't take all of my vacation/personal days I will lose them. Therefore, I decided to take one to enjoy opening day. Everyone can decide what's right for them.
That being said, sorry you got laid off.
Because it's opening day… It's a tradition…opening day holds a lot of value… It's a start of a new year, the end of a long spring training… And it's a lot more fun than work or class.
Baseball is a game, you're right, but it's also part of life.
Yes it would barring any other postponments.
You really think i'm the only one that feels that way? talk about senseless, i'm not disrespecting him but he is not the "whole team" and no one else seems to get that. Its like a bubble should be built around him and let the others blow away in the wind.
you sound kinda retarded.
you don't know me, but i am entitled to my opinion just like everyone else.
Matt.
The multiple pages in the comment section makes it a lot more difficult to follow the conversation. Especially replies.
Rest of the changes, especially the content on the left, works well.
Anybody think maybe the Reds want the game to start, and then stop after an inning or two and thus they won't need to worry about Johan for the rest of the series?
A morbid thought and it would be a scummy thing to do, but every game counts…
no, their guy's their best bet. losing one means losing the other.
No, I never ever use that word on here….but you sound very strange, and as if you want to create an argument where there isn't one.
Players like Johan and Seaver are called "The Franchise" for a reason.
Hey guys, if they do play today then check out http://chatroll.com/dom-ds-mets-fan-chat for a live in-game chat! You can also access it from ddmetsfanblog.com, so if you don't feel like dealing with those annoying philly trolls at the mlb.com chat, head on over!
Okay, back on topic…as for the game today, I'm torn because I've waited all winter for this and one more day will kill me, but then again I don't want to see anyone get hurt.
God's Not a mets fan
God loves the Twins. He's into development from within.
catholics would say god was a Cardinals fan…
my intent was not to wage a battle, but just to try to open up people's eyes that Santana is not the most important player in the organization. People are entitled to feel that way, but i am entitled to feel that he is one of many.
whatever, i'm not creating an arguement just pointing out that more players are involved more than one, if people cant handle the truth that's on them, but calling out other people who feel differently is just wrong. I never resorted to name calling other than HRH but i am being thrown under the bus for not jumping on the Santana idolization wagon.
Thanks man! Have fun!
it matters to those of us who took work/school/whatever off so we could drink beer and watch our boys! But otherwise, no, it doesn't matter if they play it tomorrow or in three months.
Test
yes
It makes more sense to PPD this one, play it tomorrow night, why open the season in the rain when the game will surely be delayed by rain. The last thing we want is seeing our bullpen get taxed during the first season of the series. Plus, (not that this is any reasoning to cancel a ball game) more Mets fans will be able to watch the opener tomorrow night opposed to this afternoon. Look at all the games that start late afternoon/tonight, why must the mets open every season with a 1pm game? Ridiculous.
