Note: The Weather is Not Good in Cincinnati

By Matthew Cerrone on Apr 06, 2009, 10:54 am

Update, 11:40 am:

The tarp is on the field, the wind is swirling, and there is sleet and rain falling from the grey sky, but there is no indication yet from the stadium that the game will be called or delayed.

So, Mets players emerged from a team-only meeting with Jerry Manuel, and are now warming up on the field.

Original Post:

The Weather Channel projects it will be around 40 degrees at game time in Cincinnati, with a 50 percent chance of rain, 20 mph winds, and a slight chance of snow later in the day.

the word is, it is raining pretty hard, and it’s frigid… the game in Chicago has already been canceled, by the way

According to WFAN’s Ed Coleman, speaking on air a few moments ago, players have been telling him they feel the game will be played.

…the thing is, tomorrow is supposed to be a bit better, and it’s an off day…

…what’s most bothersome, i’d hate to see Johan Santana warm up, go out there for an inning, there be a massive delay, or the game is called, and then santana doesn’t pitch again until later in the week

I was hoping today's game won't be cancelled, I've been following the weather in Cincinnati all day. I know a 50 percent chance of rain isn't 100 percent, but it doesn't look good from here. I hate it when Mets games that are televised on national TV are cancelled…

If you know the weather folks, then you should know that the only time you see a 90% or more chance of rain is if it's already raining, or just about to. What for meteorologists is 50%, for us plain people that translates to 75% – 80%

For some reason, every year the Ohio area is always hit with severe weather at the start of each MLB campaign. You would think Cincy needed a dome when the stadium was built. LOL. What about the new stadium for Minnesota? It's not a dome. Imagine the harsh weather they will endure each April.

    • DAK442
      Apr 06, 2009, 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #

I was talking to some food vendors at the Dome in Minny last year and they were all perplexed at the decision to have an outdoor stadium. It's cold until July and cold again in September. NO ONE is gonna go to these games.

Not for nothin' we should have built a retractable dome too.

I believe they will do everything possible to get the game in on opening day, and hey I guess with 20 mph winds there we should be glad that Adam Dunn is not still there with the Reds.

He's the best starting pitcher in the league, and would be the most difficult player to replace– with the possible exception of Carlos Beltran– where he to suffer a season-ending injury.

If, G-d forbid, Reyes or Wright or Delgado were to go down, it's possible that someone– Cora, Tatis, or Evans… or Sheff– could step in and provide a reasonable facsimile of their offensive numbers for a 2-month period (not likely, but possible). There is NO such replacement for Santana– can you see Niese, Redding or Garcia doing what he did over the last two months last year?

Well, if we had to choose one player of the 25 not to get hurt and miss one game, who would we choose??

CLEARLY Johan. And I love this team for decades, and Wright, Jose, Beltran, KRod and JJ are all indispensable to this team, but Johan, as Seaver was, is clearly numero uno in terms of importance….and that shows ZERO disrespect to anyone else.

i'm entitled to my opinion just like everyone else, and what everyone does is 100% disrespectful, he makes the most money of people on the team, not to say he hasn't earned it, but he does need to step and play under less than ideal circumstances.

santana is the most important player on this team. it doesn't need to be written anywhere. it's the truth. if he goes down, this team struggles mightily.

Obviously losing one of our better every day players (reyes, wright, beltran, delgado) would be devistating, but losing Johan would be worse than any of them. I'm worried about our staff enough with him there, I don't even want to think about what it would be like without him.

Whatever is safest for EVERYONE is the key, not just HRH Santana. Postponing until tomorrow makes sense since it was an off day anyway. Yes you can replace position players, but its not the same, the same way that replacing starting pitchers is not the same. We learned that last year when John Maine went down, that's all i'm saying, there are 25 men on the roster, why hold 1 heads and shoulders above everyone else, think about it people before you blast me.

    • brockkingman
      Apr 06, 2009, 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #

Dude, what is the problem here?

If you asked 100 fans, and everyone in the Met organization which player was the most key to the team's success, EVERY one–but you–would say Johan.

Just like they would have said Seaver in his day.

He is the hardest to replace, without question. Losing KRod or JJ would be bad, but either one of them can close. Losing Jose, Wright or Beltran would be awful, but we would still score a lot of runs.

Losing Johan would be by far the most devastating, and that is not raising him to HRH status or dissing anyone else.

This is a very strange and senseless battle you are choosing to attempt to wage…..

And had the bullpen saved one or two more games, we still would have made the postseason, despite Maine's injury…..and I love Maine.

It makes more sense to PPD this one, play it tomorrow night, why open the season in the rain when the game will surely be delayed by rain. The last thing we want is seeing our bullpen get taxed during the first season of the series. Plus, (not that this is any reasoning to cancel a ball game) more Mets fans will be able to watch the opener tomorrow night opposed to this afternoon. Look at all the games that start late afternoon/tonight, why must the mets open every season with a 1pm game? Ridiculous.
