Today’s Game:
- Weather permitting, the Mets (0-0, 0-0 Road) start their 48th season with a three-game series versus the Reds (0-0, 0-0 Home) today in Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, starting at 1:10 p.m. EDT.
On the Mound:
- LHP Johan Santana (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for the Mets. Santana makes his fourth consecutive Opening Day start, second with the Mets. He is 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA in those starts. In four career games versus the Reds, Santana is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA. He earned a no-decision in his last start versus the Reds on July 17, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out two over 4.0 IP.
- RHP Aaron Harang (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will pitch for the Reds. He is making his four straight Opening Day start for the Reds. In four career starts versus the Mets, Harang is 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA. He has not faced the Mets since September of 2007.
At the Plate:
- Jose Reyes, SS
- Daniel Murphy, LF
- David Wright, 3B
- Carlos Delgado, 1B
- Carlos Beltran, CF
- Ryan Church, RF
- Brian Schneider, C
- Luis Castillo, 2B
- Johan Santana, P
Stats:
- The Mets are 30-17, including 13-10 on the road, all-time on Opening Day and have the highest winning percentage (.638) in Major League history.
- David Wright is batting .710 with 1 HR and 4 RBI in seven career at-bats versus Harang.
- Carlos Beltran, who is 13 RBI for 1000 in his career, is batting .342 with 2 HR and 9 RBI in 38 at-bats on Opening Day.
- Brandon Phillips is 28-for-77 (.364) with 5 HR and 23 RBI in career versus the Mets.
- The Reds were 3-4 versus the Mets last season and are 294-248 all-time versus the Mets.
Random Thoughts:
- It’s time to put the last three seasons behind us and start anew. A new season, a new ballpark and a new attitude.
- Despite my excitement for Opening Day, if this is going to be a start-stop kind of game due to the weather, I’d much rather the game be postponed, especially with the off-day tomorrow, so Santana does not have to waste a start.
Today’s Broadcast:
- Today’s game will air live on SNY and WFAN.
In-Game Chat:
- To chat live with fans during the game, go to the MetsBlog.com Bullpen, here; or voice your comments below.
Enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets!

Thank you for posting the team’s records.
since when does Murphy hit homeruns?
Murphy has pop. It just hasn’t translated to home run power. But young hitters with strength can learn to drive the ball out of the park.
He slugged .471 in his cup of coffee last season and .444 in the minors. As he continues to improve his pitch selection and get stronger that number can increase or, at least, result in more homers on balls that might have been singles or doubles before.
Home run hitting is more about recognizing which pitches to jerk out than anything.
Did we already break the comments section?
i hope it doesnt go back to the new comment section
Ditto.
agreed, leave it like it is now and we’re good to go.
Side note: now I remember why I dont like being on this site DURING games – people take one at bat and one play and draw the most ridiuclous conclusions from them. See above: “now do you see why church needs to play RF all season?” dude it’s game 1 of 162. and “runner on wright can’t make contact, uhhh” EVERYONE CALM DOWN
Well, we might be good to go if they comments were actually sorting right.
i think he was talking about Church’s defense
you would think they would test out new forums before implementing it.
Normally, in the IT world, you would test and qa any new implementation and/or release. I saw over the winter where Matt said he was trying to outsource the IT portion of maintaining this site. If he did, he should get his money back – lol.
I ditto your ditto from above.
The new format was terrible for more reasons than I have the time to list.
I dido your dido that dido’s the dido from above.
Let’s Go Mets!
And I’m seeing the old format for these posts. Am I the only one?
lets do this !
They’ve reset game time again to 1:20 and not 1:40. LET’S GO METS! IN THE WORDS OF LARRY THE CABLE GUY ……………”GET ‘ER DONE!
I guess comment section isn’t working at all? Can’t get any comments to post – trying again.. Time is over 4 hours off. Loading with JS errors, if the site loads at all. If it does load, it’s crawling.
GAME ON!
GAME ON
And we already have issues with MLB.com’s radio feed. An error message pops up when I try to log in, and customer service is too swamped to take my call. Thanks boys. It’s not like I am that interested in hearing my favorite team play their opening day game.
Just heard Steve Phillips say on ESPN that he expects them to get the game in today. Let's Go Mets!
A new season, a new ballpark a new attitude. Now I know what to write on the sign I bring to opening day. This would make a fine slogan for the year. Nice job Mike!
Fingers crossed…
Oh how I've missed these posts! Thanks Mike!
the game will be on espn for everyone outside NYC
I really hope this game is on. As long as it is not raining hard, I'm sure the game will be on. Snow won;t last too long, and they're not going to cancel a game for the wind or cold.
Hopefully this will be played. I could really use some help killing time at the office today….
REYES SINGLES!
Okay, now it’s working, but WFAN feed is unavailable. Oh well, better than nothing.
Awful job by MLB to play games again in early April in cold weather cities. They could play most in domes or warm weather easily.
WFAN just said – Mets game will not start until at least 1:40 P.M…..Here we go….
Mr Cerone,What the heck are you doing
to this website???
The comment section isn’t working right. We can all see that. Cerrone is at the opening-day meet-up at Public House, so I doubt he’ll be fixing this before the end of the game. But if you look, it still works, just scroll down to the current time. It’s really not worth complaining about, especially with a good baseball game going on!
WTF? What happened to the new page? LOL. Man I was getting used it…was it the name Matt, “Cerrones_Ego”? LOL :-) Keep up the good work.
The site is a MESS…on opening day, no less.
Game log at Metsopolis – Aflac trivia and keithisms!
Runner on 3rd with 1 out and Wright can’t make contact… here we go…
the game is on…lol
reyes on third, one out, wright strikes out, delgado walk, beltran flyout to center. UNCLUTCH LOL OMG!!!11
Thank god they got rid of that crappy forum.
Amen, I haven’t posted since we were at this format. I couldn’t even sign in and try posting and on principle alone that was reason enough for me to dislike that change. What was I supposed to log on all over again to metsblog? Good job Matt.
They definately arent a computer savy bunch.
Sigh…not the start I wanted. Oh well — at least Reyes got it off right. Offense will not be our problem over the long haul.
weewgferwfwfae
i’m very confused… are we back to the old comment section format?
Happy Opening Day everyone
Lets GO METS
TESTING
Is there anywhere to listen to this via online radio? I tried wfan but all I’m getting is a replay of the Boomer and Carton show?? Anyone know where I can listen to the game through online/streaming radio? Please help. Thanks!
Church steals 2nd.
OK, 1 AB and I am already tired of seeing slappy.
Is it obvious to everyone why Ryan Church needs to stay in RF?
CR:
Only way to listen online is MLB radio at mlb.com. Yearly subscription is $14.95. Usually pretty good, though I’ve had some issues as my comments indicate. For some reason can’t listen to WFAN’s feed – usually you can listen to both home and away, but the only away feed for this game is the Spanish station.
Fine play by Church.
CHURCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF with the comments section today???
Woking?
Evidently several people have made comments in the future (look at the time stamps). Now the comments section can’t decide if it wants to post earliest comments first or last. Early season technical glitches – isn’t spring training for getting those glitches worked out?
O.K., someone is obviously trying to work on this comment section. Now it looks like you can post but it’s posting no particular random order.
Can’t believe this site is broke for the first game….
Great comment section still trashed.
“Frank what did opening day mean to you?”
“Uh It meant that baseball started?”
Listening to the Cincy feed on MLB Gameday Audio. The announcers aren’t so bad.
Uh oh. Rain is picking up.
testing testing??
1st and 2nd, 2 outs intentional walk to Castillo.
Santana up.
yea the old comment section is back!!
well atleast I can breath now
Seems like the Reds know Murphy will chase the high ones.
this forum is still messed, showing posts out of order….. never been on a website that had this much trouble with a forum.
MURPHY !!!
MURPHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYyyy
Who said Murphy didn’t have any power?
since when does murhpy hit home runs?
Way to go “Dennis” Murphy!
yesterday Jon Miller, the second worst announcer in sports, called Jordan Schafer, Logan for the first 6 innings or so…
boom! murph!!!
That was a 9 pitch at bat for Murphy.
murph!
Wright on first.
Hey, Cincy announcer guy, the man’s name is DANIEL Murphy. Can you please get it right before the game is over?
Don’t worry, they’ll all know his name fairly soon
Maybe the boys in the Mets booth need to start shouting: “His name . . . is Daniel Murphy.”
“Hapless” Reds?
I hear boos!
that was dumb to send wright, the ball was hit so hard.
How are there posts marked 4pm?
Ask Marty and Doc Brown.
so im listening to the game on the cinci radio station because im blackedout of everything else and hes called jose reyes “carlos reyes” and daniel murphy “dennis murphy” over and over again god its annoying
He finally just correctly called him Daniel. It only took 5 innings to figure it out.
Santana!
One more inning for Johan?
possibly 2, i’d give him up to 110 pitches. then go putz, frod.
A double for Castillo!
An extra base hit for Castillo? Am I dreaming?
Santana walks!
On water?
come on, lets get some insurance.
Based juiced, c’mon DMurph
*Bases
Bases loaded, one out, Murphy at the plate
2nd and 3rd with 2 outs…these are the runs this team has failed to bring in the past 2 seasons…
Last year with runners on 2 and 3rd the Mets hit 330 .490 .437.
I don’t see any stats specifically relating to out 2 outs in that situation.
Yeah, but that stat doesn’t really help one to whine on opening day…..
Ok, I’ll take the run. Let’s go DWright!
Just a suggestion to deal with the messed up comments: one person posts something like “1st inning”. The others reply to that post, all comments related to the 1st inning get clustered.
(Oh hai, I’m new here ^^)
That won’t work. After a few replies, you can’t post anymore to the original. ‘Comments cannot be nested below this level’, or some such protocol.
Ok Delgado, just think you’re playing at the old Yankee Stadium.
Hm, 6 walks, 1 intentional, 2 bases loaded situations along with 8 hits and that’s only garnered 2 runs. Hopefully the run efficiency picks up from here.
Bottom of 6th
8 hits, 11 LOB
Lost count on how many bases loaded.
Big spot int he game right now. Mets up 2, runners on 2nd and third with no out and the middle of Cincy’s order is up.
Johan still in game after 99 pitchesnad 5.2 innings. cold weather though… and just like that, a relief pitcher. good call, jerry.
And Green gets his man.
Phew, that was a hard out off of Green, but I will take it….and so will Johan!
7th inning
The season is just starting and lots of people are drawing too many conclusions from just 1 game.
Like, if the bullpen blows this game, it’s collapse all over again. If they save it, all the problems were solved.
(Just a suggestion to deal with the messed up comments: one person posts something like “1st inning”. The others reply to that post, all comments related to the 1st inning get clustered.)
I understand what you are saying, and of course, it is a long season and you are correct. However, all fans, by their natire live and die pitch-by-pitch, inning by inning….and in the heat of the moment may say things that, upon reflection they know are illogical. That is one of the great things about this site…the ability to be “with” other fans to celebrate the little highlights and tiny defeats in the course of a game….and to vent frustrations.
A 1-2-3 inning? From our bullpen? Me likey.
Nice work Sean Green! This year’s Chad Bradford?
I love this bullpen!
Nice start for Mr.Green.I can get used to these easy innings..lol
Too bad Mets hitters also went down fast this inning.
too true.
Marlon making it very easy on the front office when they need to bring up Livan.
So what happens when these posts meet the “future” posts? Does it tear a hole in the space time continuum?
I’ve been curious about that myself. It’s a bit like crossing the streams.
HAHAHAHA!
You said crossing the streams was bad! Very, very bad!
Just remember, your “past” post can’t touch your “present” post or else … (sorry, only mad scientists can explain and understand the “or else” part)
Geez. I feel I have watched this same exact game like 150 times over the last two years.
Putz to K-rod game over!
Gameday/Gamecast is still at 1 out. How delayed are those?
Tums time.
Day One and we have our first Putz-Rod victim!
Good job Putz!
Two scoreless innings from the pen. Very, very nice….
Just one more. Can we get an insurance run or two, please?
All right boys, how about some insurance, just to be on the safe side?
BTW, it looks like all the old posts at this time slot have disappeared. I guess crossing the streams has destroyed them as thoroughly as the Stay Puff marshmallow man.
hahaha, good one.
Is Murphy going to have to do all the heavy lifting by himself?
Every Murph at bat I see is at least 7 pitch long.
Correction: 5 at bats:
3,3,9,4,9 pitches
ugh…David!
Oh well guess Murph had to pick up David today
And here we go with K Rod.
You know, it’s the first game of the season, and yet it feels like September. Like this is the first big test if it’s really going to be a brand new thing with this pen.
One more to go!
Put it in the books!
Put the runs in Murph tab today.
So maybe Jerry knows what he’s doing after all.
Green to J.J. to KRod. I love it!
Put it in the books!
Ah MetsFan4, get ready to type that phrase again and again and again…..
All right bullpen. Add to the best record on opening day for any MLB franchise!
Nice!
Wow. I almost forgot what a game like that was like. A bullpen that does it’s job and a Santana win. who knew.
I love the smell of a opening day win in the morning.
Put it in the books!
Smells like….. Victory…. nothing else smells like that….
great way to start off the season! i’m a little concerned with all the wasted opportunities though, that’s kinda been their m.o. these past few seasons…
That’s a game that Santana would have gotten an no decision in for sure last year.
Your spot on with that comment….
Ask Daniel Murhpy what their clubhouse smells like today.
That was very nice. I’ve never been so appreciate for something that sounds so simple, yet isn’t. It’s great to have hope that we went from one of the worst bullpens in franchise history to one of the best. They should play the song ”I’m in heaven” on here.
Not just was I impressed with K-Rod (or ”Frankie”) and Putz, but I was with Sean Green too. He had lots of movement on his pitches. He really looks like an ideal set up guy. I was happy that K-Rod got a strike out to end the game, so we got to see his excitement. All those Phillies fans said K-Rod and his ”mug” would crunch under pressure, yet it looks like they’re wife beater was overwhelmed.
And Green’s stats from last year are deceiving..he was great the first four months, then got overused due to the Mariners absolutely horrid starters…he is great for this role.
Piece of cake. :)
LOL!
Buddy, I have loved this bullpen since December, and wow, what a start!
This was a loss last year……
Did I miss something? Where’s the “new” comment format at? I liked it a lot better… This is so… Blah.
Either way, I love the idea of 7-inning games, don’t you? ;)
Hopefully next time we can see 57-to-75. God, I love this ball club.
Alright. Magic number over the Phillies is 161!
nice…the division is practically won!
Did I miss something? Where’s the “new” comment format at? I liked it a lot better… This is so… Bleh.
Either way, I love the idea of 7-inning games, don’t you? ;)
Hopefully next time we can see 57-to-75. Man, do I love this ball club.
Just one game of course, but welcome to the 2009 Mets.
A 1-run lead holds up.
Beautiful, beautiful opener.
Our pen rules the civilized world and elsewhere.
Omar for executive of the year!!
Cannot wait till Wednesday!
Spot on.
Great win. Despite 11 LOB! Set up a great debut for the new pen. MLB didn’t even allow the option to listen to the FAN online. 4:55 PM the FAN website finally has gone back to the post game. WTF?
Yesss. Only one game played and the Phillies are already one game behind us. Wow. So, if this continues …. oh, never mind.
love this unabashed optimism from the W today…
felt at ease when santana turned the ball over in the 6th…its only 1 game, but haven’t felt that secure since 06.
Way to go Murph !
Solid team effort, I’m certain the 11 left on today will be the exception rather than the rule.
One thing I will say is that wright looked like he was pressing at the plate just a tad.
I’d like to see him more relaxed in situational hitting scenarios.
Johan was the man today a true freaking ACE
under harsh conditions a true warrior.
Always good to start out the season with a W and yes these wins count the same as the ones in september. But again lacking in timely hitting continues to plague this team.
Yup, 31-17 now on Opening Day. Not sure what the particular reason for us having the best Opening Day record is, but it’s a good thing. It’s nice to think positively. Last season, frustration was so high, it seemed impossible to do that with the Mets.
The only two things I had a problem with today were Razor Shines decision to send Wright. I respect his aggressiveness, but he should have known how hard that ball was hit, he should have known Jay Bruce’s arm and that David Wright is not Jose Reyes. The other thing that could certainly be improved on is hitting with RISP. The last thing we’d want to be like are the Phillies, who appear to have not concept of what that means. Santana’s a great pitcher. He only needed 2 runs to win this. Pelfrey, Ollie, Maine, and certainly not Livan, can win regularly on little run support.
