Pre-Game: Mets @ Reds – Game One

By Mike Nichols on Apr 06, 2009, 12:10 pm

Today’s Game:

  • Weather permitting, the Mets (0-0, 0-0 Road) start their 48th season with a three-game series versus the Reds (0-0, 0-0 Home) today in Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, starting at 1:10 p.m. EDT.

On the Mound:

  • LHP Johan Santana (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for the Mets. Santana makes his fourth consecutive Opening Day start, second with the Mets. He is 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA in those starts. In four career games versus the Reds, Santana is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA. He earned a no-decision in his last start versus the Reds on July 17, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out two over 4.0 IP.
  • RHP Aaron Harang (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will pitch for the Reds. He is making his four straight Opening Day start for the Reds. In four career starts versus the Mets, Harang is 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA. He has not faced the Mets since September of 2007.

At the Plate:

  1. Jose Reyes, SS
  2. Daniel Murphy, LF
  3. David Wright, 3B
  4. Carlos Delgado, 1B
  5. Carlos Beltran, CF
  6. Ryan Church, RF
  7. Brian Schneider, C
  8. Luis Castillo, 2B
  9. Johan Santana, P

Stats:

  • The Mets are 30-17, including 13-10 on the road, all-time on Opening Day and have the highest winning percentage (.638) in Major League history.
  • David Wright is batting .710 with 1 HR and 4 RBI in seven career at-bats versus Harang.
  • Carlos Beltran, who is 13 RBI for 1000 in his career, is batting .342 with 2 HR and 9 RBI in 38 at-bats on Opening Day.
  • Brandon Phillips is 28-for-77 (.364) with 5 HR and 23 RBI in career versus the Mets.
  • The Reds were 3-4 versus the Mets last season and are 294-248 all-time versus the Mets.

Random Thoughts:

  • It’s time to put the last three seasons behind us and start anew. A new season, a new ballpark and a new attitude.
  • Despite my excitement for Opening Day, if this is going to be a start-stop kind of game due to the weather, I’d much rather the game be postponed, especially with the off-day tomorrow, so Santana does not have to waste a start.

Today’s Broadcast:

  • Today’s game will air live on SNY and WFAN.

In-Game Chat:

  • To chat live with fans during the game, go to the MetsBlog.com Bullpen, here; or voice your comments below.

Enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets!

since when does Murphy hit homeruns?

      • Wanny2
        Apr 06, 2009, 3:33 pm at 3:33 pm #

Murphy has pop. It just hasn’t translated to home run power. But young hitters with strength can learn to drive the ball out of the park.

He slugged .471 in his cup of coffee last season and .444 in the minors. As he continues to improve his pitch selection and get stronger that number can increase or, at least, result in more homers on balls that might have been singles or doubles before.

Home run hitting is more about recognizing which pitches to jerk out than anything.

agreed, leave it like it is now and we’re good to go.

Side note: now I remember why I dont like being on this site DURING games – people take one at bat and one play and draw the most ridiuclous conclusions from them. See above: “now do you see why church needs to play RF all season?” dude it’s game 1 of 162. and “runner on wright can’t make contact, uhhh” EVERYONE CALM DOWN

Normally, in the IT world, you would test and qa any new implementation and/or release. I saw over the winter where Matt said he was trying to outsource the IT portion of maintaining this site. If he did, he should get his money back – lol.

Only way to listen online is MLB radio at mlb.com. Yearly subscription is $14.95. Usually pretty good, though I’ve had some issues as my comments indicate. For some reason can’t listen to WFAN’s feed – usually you can listen to both home and away, but the only away feed for this game is the Spanish station.

Just a suggestion to deal with the messed up comments: one person posts something like “1st inning”. The others reply to that post, all comments related to the 1st inning get clustered.

    7th inning

The season is just starting and lots of people are drawing too many conclusions from just 1 game.

Like, if the bullpen blows this game, it’s collapse all over again. If they save it, all the problems were solved.

(Just a suggestion to deal with the messed up comments: one person posts something like “1st inning”. The others reply to that post, all comments related to the 1st inning get clustered.)

I understand what you are saying, and of course, it is a long season and you are correct. However, all fans, by their natire live and die pitch-by-pitch, inning by inning….and in the heat of the moment may say things that, upon reflection they know are illogical. That is one of the great things about this site…the ability to be “with” other fans to celebrate the little highlights and tiny defeats in the course of a game….and to vent frustrations.

That was very nice. I’ve never been so appreciate for something that sounds so simple, yet isn’t. It’s great to have hope that we went from one of the worst bullpens in franchise history to one of the best. They should play the song ”I’m in heaven” on here.
Not just was I impressed with K-Rod (or ”Frankie”) and Putz, but I was with Sean Green too. He had lots of movement on his pitches. He really looks like an ideal set up guy. I was happy that K-Rod got a strike out to end the game, so we got to see his excitement. All those Phillies fans said K-Rod and his ”mug” would crunch under pressure, yet it looks like they’re wife beater was overwhelmed.

    Way to go Murph !
Solid team effort, I’m certain the 11 left on today will be the exception rather than the rule.
One thing I will say is that wright looked like he was pressing at the plate just a tad.
I’d like to see him more relaxed in situational hitting scenarios.

Yup, 31-17 now on Opening Day. Not sure what the particular reason for us having the best Opening Day record is, but it’s a good thing. It’s nice to think positively. Last season, frustration was so high, it seemed impossible to do that with the Mets.

  121. nyj0126
    Apr 06, 2009, 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm #

The only two things I had a problem with today were Razor Shines decision to send Wright. I respect his aggressiveness, but he should have known how hard that ball was hit, he should have known Jay Bruce’s arm and that David Wright is not Jose Reyes. The other thing that could certainly be improved on is hitting with RISP. The last thing we’d want to be like are the Phillies, who appear to have not concept of what that means. Santana’s a great pitcher. He only needed 2 runs to win this. Pelfrey, Ollie, Maine, and certainly not Livan, can win regularly on little run support.
