Note: No Game on TV from 6-7 pm on Saturday
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 7, 2009 2:32 pm

FOX has an exclusive window for all Saturday games taking place prior to 7 pm, meaning only FOX and the local channel can broadcast during that window.

Meanwhile, the Marlins scheduled this Saturday’s game against the Mets for 6 pm, one hour early, to accommodate a post-game concert by Flo Rida.

In other words, from 6 pm to 7 pm on Saturday, the Mets-Marlins game will not be broadcast on SNY; thanks to FOX, MLB, the Marlins, and, apparently, Flo Rida.

The minute the clock strikes 7 pm, SNY will begin broadcasting from whatever inning the Mets and Marlins are in.

this spins my head round baby right round

  2. CharlieH says:

I’m really getting tired of the Marlins & their pennyante bullshiite…

    • wnymetsfan says:

I’m all for bashing the Marlins but I doubt they had much say since they do not run Pro Player Stadium which would be the people scheduling the concert. You could do a 1 PM but not sure how enjoyable that would be for anyone in Miami in April where the afternoons can get real hot, humid and sunny. I know that is why the University of Miami used to like to schedule noon games since the opposition would wilt in the sun.

Once again, Faux proves who the real facists are.

  4. lil pelf says:

speaking of ridiculous outside baseball affects, the United Football League new york team begins play at CIti Field in October, guarantee that screws us in some way.

    • mouserdz says:

Where did you read that? Last I heard that was NOT going to happen. Here’s an old article related to this…

  5. RPIazza31 says:

Rain Delay = Joke’s on you, Fox :)

  6. dave27 says:

It goes without saying that all Mets fans should boycott Fox’s Game of the Week this week…it’s because they can’t grant an hour exception to their silly blackout rule to fans who will have no interest in their game anyway that this is even an issue.

Frankly, I’d support boycotting it all season, other than when the Mets are on.

    • mouserdz says:

Unless you’re providing Nielsen the info, then you’re not impacting the ratings that they record. So unless you’re doing that, there is not point in boycotting.

      • wnymetsfan says:

Besides not Fox’s fault that the Marlins have less pull than Flo Rida with Pro Player Stadium.

  7. lil pelf says:

don’t we have 1 oclock saturday sny games all the time tho?

    • Gasface77 says:

Ummm…exactly. Can someone explain this a little better for me? The Mets played every Saturday last year at 1:00 P.M. and every game was broadcast on SNY. What am I missing here?

      • mouserdz says:

Last year, is last year. That’s it.

Even Mets.com has this game scheduled for 6pm. I’ve seen a bunch of night games scheduled for Saturdays on the east coast.

      • CharlieH says:

I think Matthew wrote it wrong. Fox has the window BETWEEN 4 & 7, and won’t force a game already in progress to go dark. That’s why all the 1:00 games were spared this ignominious fate.

        • Gasface77 says:

Thank you…that makes more sense and would explain all the games scheduled on Saturday at 1:00 PM that I will be watching.

I am not going to cry about those 45 minutes on Saturday. i will be listening to Howie and (unfortunately) Wayne until 7:00 PM.

        • wnymetsfan says:

Wally Matthews was wrong? I do not believe it such a integrity bound…I can’t even type it without busting out laughing. It is only from 4 to 7 while they show their game.

    • Ceetar says:

yes we do. the local stations are not affected, only national broadcasts, like mlb.tv or extra innings. SNY is always allowed to air the Mets game on Saturdays providing it isn’t on Fox. Never Sunday evenings, and not on Thursday nights when it’s on mlb network.

      • wnymetsfan says:

Fox has an exclusive window and it doesn’t matter whether local or not. But they only show games at 4 PM now. They no longer have a 1 PM game. Besides SNY is shown in places that are not local and it doesn’t get blacked out there.

  8. mark4212 says:

Another reason why fox is terrible at broadcasting sports…

    I bet this was a Joe Buck decision… Isn’t that right Troy?…. Yes that’s exactly right Joe…..

    Remote thrown through broken television.

  9. BaltimoreMets says:

The ridiculousness of this is so obvious that there is no need to comment on it. As anyone who watches from out of town can attest to, blackout rules are 100% absurd.

  10. bvaz says:

I blame this on MLB. Hopefully the next contract with Fox addresses this issue, especially with the growing popularity of mlb.tv.

I would love to see the concept of national broadcasts go away altogether. I know it will never happen. but with the mlb network now, mlb.tv and the extra innings, package, I would so much rather watching a home team’s broadcasters. nothing irks me more than watching a mets national broadcast and have the announcers just state incorrect facts. personally, I find many announcers lazy in their preperation.

    • dave27 says:

As someone who grew up loving when the Mets would get the NBC Game of the Week with Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola, I would have to agree. The prestige that came with that is basically gone.

At least ESPN Sunday Night Baseball is a truly national game – even if their announcers are completely miserable. Fox Saturday is regional – so it doesn;t even have that going for it.

  11. EliFromBrooklyn says:

No Mets for an hour? What’s next? Turning off oxygen tanks thru out the Country?

And besides, this is the 21st Century – there ought to be rules against such blasphemy.

  12. FMSD says:

Leave it to someone to bust out the “Faux” for Fox and talk about fascists. I bet you bought a Che Guevarra tshirt from Banana Republic.

    • brock kingman says:

You don’t have to be a leftist to realize how ridiculous Fox “News” is….all you have to do is have about a 12-year-old’s ability to comprehend reality.

Buying a Che Guevara t-shirt at Banana Republic is most certainly comically silly, and is on an equal plane of idiocy as believing in or supporting Fox “News”.

  13. mouserdz says:

This is absurd… Is there someone we can email to make our voices heard? At least show the game for free on mlb.tv or something.

  14. mos1982 says:

This is ridiculous. I hate FOX and ESPN more and more every year. The only good thing left on ESPN is Baseball Tonight which I don’t even need anymore because of the MLB network. FOX is just a complete waste of time; end of story.

    • nymets212 says:

This is the last time “mos1982″ will be able to comment on anything because Jack Bauer just jumped through his television set and killed him for calling his station a waste of time…..

Yeahhh… I hate Joe Buck et al

  15. ectomobile says:

Thats really strange. My heart goes out to all 634 Marlins fans who will miss the first hour.

  16. jtolszewski says:

there seems like there must be a way around this, like if gary, keith and ron give the play by play on tv without us showing the actual game.

i dont know, but this seems ridiculous, and by god the fox broadcasters are worst than the bumbling duo of miller and morgan on espn

  17. mark4212 says:

Ok, so I just went to look at the Saturday Schedule. THere are 7 games not including the mets who start before 7 oclock.

Are you telling me 12 out 14 of these teams are going to be blacked out because of FOX’s game of the week?

Or are they going to be the game of the week in their respective markets and we are going to be forced to watch Boston vs Anaheim and be the only team punished?

    • wnymetsfan says:

Fox’s contract with MLB gives them exclusive TV rights from 4 PM to 7 PM every Saturday. Only exception is if a game started before 4 runs over the station can show the end of the game. Not a big deal usually asmost teams schedule the games either at 1 or 7. Unfortunately the Marlins have like zero rights in that stadium and my guess is the people who run Pro Player figured the concert was more important since Flo Rida had like 1 big song.

      • amazins2001 says:

        False.

Fox has the rights to all day games and block all baseball from 1-7 on Saturday afternoons.
This is not news. For anyone who has had MLB.tv or Extra Innings on directv or cable knows that unless the market you are in shows the game on FOX you do not see it.

I wish WFAN would broadcast these games free over the internet at least. It would be nice to be able to at least listen to the Mets on Saturdays

        • amazins2001 says:

This is for out of market fans only

        • gipper82475 says:

Eh, if you have MLB.tv, you automatically get the MLB.audio service inculded, so those people can listen to the WFAN feed on Saturdays. Those with the rather pricey Extra Innings package can surely afford the $15 bucks for the MLB.audio package.

Personally, I always get BOTH MlLB.tv Premium AND the Extra Innings Package to give me the most flexibility. Sometimes Extra Innings has only the other team’s feed and the announcers are horrible, so I either mute my TV and synch it to the audio WFAN feed on MLB.audio, or, if I am lucky, MLB.Tv will have the SNY feed.

          Easy peasy.

        • wnymetsfan says:

Actually it was 1 to 7 but since they only show a game at 4 PM now the window is 4 to 7. This is why the Mets played a ton of 1 PM Saturday games last year without issue. If the window was 1 to 7 that could not have happened.

  18. MetsFan4Decades says:

You have got to be kidding me….

  19. MurphsDaMan28 says:

Does anyone know if SNY is carried in Connecticut? An answer would be greatly appreciated……and amazingly, there is a station worse at broadcasting sports, and that would be CBS. Their coverage of the NCAA tourni was an absolute joke!

  20. NYMETSFAN718 says:

Flo Rida??? Hes wack!!!!! At least let it be a worthy artist

  21. khmustache says:

    awesome…just awesome

  22. attgig says:

that goes for mlb.tv too. I subscribed to mlb.tv 2 years ago, only to find out that I couldn’t get ANY games on saturday afternoons. they say it’s on fox, so watch it there, but when my area decides to show a different game, I’m left just screwed.

    needless to say, I haven’t subscribed to mlb.tv since…

    • metsrule77 says:

It also applies to the MLB package on comcast. I never got to watch the subway series games because they were always on the weekends and I got screwed because I lived in the Philadelphia area of NJ.

  23. mouserdz says:

“Like MetsTweet suggested, some one should use Justin.tv to live stream the game from Miami’s FOX Sports Florida.”

Matt – Fyi, MLB will have the site shutdown.

    • gipper82475 says:

Besides, no game, or just streaming the MLB.audio WFAN feed is better than watching the FL feed – they are the worst announcers in the business!

  24. J0eSmiTh says:

this news certainly does spin my head right round

    this is ridiculous

  25. blains2008 says:

And the Marlins wonder why they have no fans.

  26. MurphsDaMan28 says:

Its bad enough we get spoiled with opening day then have to wait for this rediculous day off that could very well be utalized in september, and now this garbage. I’m not one of these people that need to watch every single pitch, but for the first saturday game of the year to be broadcast an hour into the game is just stupid.

    • blackha368 says:

The idea of the day off is to have space to play opening day in case of inclement weather. Opening Day is an premium ticket and they dont want double headers so early in the season.

  27. ChadBradfordSociety says:

I feel bad for the 3 Marlins fans that will miss the first hour of the game.

    What the hell?

Somebody should tell Bud Selig to pull his head out of his… you know where.

Damn Flo Rida. I’d put good money on more people showing up for his concert than to see the fish get fried.

  28. Cliff Pink Floyd says:

    wtf

  29. “Woah, Woah, Woah, Woah. This is not my batman cup.”

But seriously, isn’t SNY considered local for NY? How can they be blacked out by a game on Fox. This is absurd.

  30. Cactus says:

i thought you made another spelling error when you typed Flo Rida. apparently that’s just some bad act.

  31. is it on WFAN? or is it blocked out there 2?

  32. Ceetar says:

Correct me if I’m w rong.. but I was 99% sure this only applied to national broadcasts. I.E. _not_ SNY but mlb.tv or extra innings or anything. local broadcasts are still acceptable, and SNY is still broadcasting at 6..

  33. bboyce says:

as a mets fan who lives in san francisco and can’t afford mlb.tv, i’m pretty sure that you guys are completely overreacting. you’ll figure out something to do while missing that one hour of 1 game out of 162…

    • gipper82475 says:

How can you afford to live in San Fran, and yet not affor the $100-ish for MLB.tv? That is, like, my monthly latte budget. It’s a decent but not great bottle of Cabernet from your neck of the woods at any restaurant. It is less than my monthly cable bill. Well less than a $1 a game…..

And yet you afford to live in one opf the priciest cities on the planet?

Please. I bet you could find a way. And if you can’t, or won’t, don’t go kvetching about those of us who have worked hard enough to afford MLB.tv and/or the Extra Innings cable package and get ticked off at moments like this.

      • bboyce says:

        gipper,

i live in berkeley on a student budget. i’ve decided that mlb.tv is one of the things i can live without.

personal finances aside…. my point remains: you can live without 1 hour of 1 game. it’s mildly frustrating but nothing to freak out about.

        • gipper82475 says:

Aha…that is different. And, yes missing an hour of a ballgame is not exactly 9/11, …..and I am used to these rules and simply adjust by listening via MLB.audio.

Still, this is a forum for Mets fans, and it is understandable that such fans will want to see the team for all 9 innings in the first weekend game of the year.

  34. bespo says:

I live in South Florida. Will be going to the game.

This game is NOT on TV at all down here on Sat.

  35. DWrightMVP says:

    ill be watching on MLBTV

  36. minm2gz says:

Can anyone explain to me what’s the point of blocking out baseball from being played anywhere else but FOX between 6-7? That is utterly retarded.

    • casey s. says:

well, i guess in general it’s because they have the rights to air a 1pm game and a 4pm game. the 4pm game can go three hours or to 7pm. fox doesn’t want any other game pulling viewers away from it’s telecast because it would drive down rating points, which drive down ad dollars…

  37. nyj0126 says:

So it is an advantage to have MLB.tv in this? They still haven’t broadcasted any of their games, cheating out their subscribers.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I don’t have MLB.tv so I could be wrong, but my understanding of it is that it uses one of the teams’ television coverage. If the Marlins have no TV coverage of that game (which according to MLB.com they do not) and if SNY cannot broadcast until 7:00, what is there for MLB.tv to show between 6:00 and 7:00?

  38. AzMetsFan says:

This has always been the absolute worst. I’ve been fighting with it for years now, as I have the Extra Innings package to watch the games in AZ. They block out all games till 7pm est. and show what they think will sell. If there is a rain out they put on infomercials instead of another game.

  39. Matt_Stop_Censoring_Me says:

justin. tv will likely not work. MLB has somehow been able to completely lock down all live streaming of its games on all of the p2p live streaming sites. I found that out yesterday when I was stuck at work trying to find a live feed somewhere, but ended up settling for a gamecast. screw MLB. the experience made me order a Slingbox last night. it should arrive in a few days. :) Fork MLB.

    • macolon1 says:

Game can always be streamed at myp2p.eu.

      • Matt_Stop_Censoring_Me says:

I tried myp2p.eu. it didn’t work. I couldn’t download the software, etc. I thought I was pretty smart, but to be honest, that website is not intuitive at all. you have to download all this stuff, and even then, i got an error.

  40. casey s. says:

i’ve been dealing with the stuff for years. i’ve lived outside of ny since 2003 and have had the package in one form or another since. if the game starts before 7pm on saturday, no game for me.

and, the game is never on mlb ei on sundays. so, basically for six years i have not be able to watch the mets on the weekends except for when the mets play after 7pm on saturday or if they are the national game on either saturday or sunday.

such is life for us out of towners.

  41. casey s. says:

wait a minute. is fox evening broadcasting a game this saturday? i don’t see anything on the schedule. if they are not broadcasting, why would there be a black out?

    • re: Casey: Per FOX/MLB agreement, ANY GAME scheduled at that time FOX owns. Even if they don’t start broadcasting games for another week or two, it’s in their contract agreement.

  42. LMAO. Flo Rida.
I bet Rich Waltz and Tommy Hutton had a part in this too. Should have heard them yesterday, they’re pretty positive they have the greatest team in the history of major league baseball.

  43. pcmetsfan07 says:

So Fox is the only network that broadcasts Saturday afternoon games between those time periods? I guess I never picked up on that…

This however, is still weird. How can they schedule a game when one hour of it won’t even be on tv?

    • Byron says:

How? Because Marlins fans wouldnt’ have seen the game on TV anyhow b/c of their crappy TV contract… so really it’s only the Mets fans that are getting screwed.

  44. DaveyJohnsonsLocker says:

This is the Marlins’ fault, not Fox or the MLB. Fox has a multi-year, multi-billion dollar contract with the MLB. All teams split that money. Everyone knows the broadcast rules – no games that start, or are likely to end, between 4pm & 7pm on Saturdays (I believe there are exceptions for doubleheaders, and the Blue Jays can get around it because they are in Canada).

Why do the Marlins care more about putting on a rap concert than their fans? Pathetic.

    • PedroMANIA says:

Games are blacked out on Saturday before 7pm, not just 4-7pm. Otherwise, you make good points.

Blame the Marlin execs who screwed up by not having the game televised in FL and not caring if its blacked out for NY fans.

  45. murphzilla says:

I am really confused by all of this. Is this little c0ck block by Fox for all games before 7pm or just in the 4-7 hour? How are we as the local team going to get blacked out of our home team? If i am to understand this correctly, no one will be able to broadcast this game for the first hour, if that is the case will we be able to see highlights from this time or anything like that?

  46. MikeTodd09 says:

Don’t the Mets have to approve of the time change? Otherwise a team could start a game at 8:00am if they wanted to.

  47. northendmets says:

I know a bunch of out of town extra innings people have already posted and I think everyone agrees that all games are blacked out on Saturdays before 7pm, unless you luck out and it’s on FOX in your region or you are back home in NY viewing it locally. But I would not think that the 1st hour of this game would be blacked out on SNY in NY though. Isn’t that a local channel in NY, or is it only PIX? That Saturday FOX blackout rule is the dumbest rule their is in pro sports exclusive broadcasting.

Sunday games are viewable on MLB.tv. and in some instance MLB EI. You just wont be able to see a game that is on PIX. It will be the other team’s network.

  48. Eggman says:

Simple solution: SNY should show the game from the start on delay starting at 7. I’d rather that than catch it from the 3rd or 4th inning.

    • fxcarden says:

” FOX has an exclusive window for all Saturday games taking place prior to 7 pm, meaning only FOX and the local channel can broadcast during that window. ”

I think the time block maybe starts at 4:00 PM ?

  49. ericloz says:

Come on people it’s not like J.S. is pitching on Saturday or anything.

What’s the worse that can happen? The first NoNo in mets history and we miss the first 3 innings?

And since it’s Fox, we won’t even have replay.

    Ahhh, the humanities….

  50. lmao Flo Rida ruining my saturday…by the way am I the only one noticing how cool the rap name Flo Rida is :o took me a while to notice that Flo+Rida = Florida…:(

  51. metsfan1 says:

I know the answer to this already but if they black out NY, why can’t we get the Florida feed on the MLB Extra Inning package?

    • northendmets says:

I’ll answer anyway, subscribers to MLB EI can not get games that include the team in their local market where they live. That includes MLB.tv. I live in Boston so the Sox games are always blacked out on the EI package channels and can only be viewed on NESN in Boston. But I don’t give a crap about the Sox, so who cares. Go Mets…

  52. NYMETSFAN718 says:
