Video: Santana’s Pre-Game Handshake Parade
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 7, 2009 10:18 am

Prior to yesterday’s game, SNY captured video of Johan Santana, before his Opening Day start, walking up and down the dugout greeting his teammates, each of whom he had a unique, personalized handshake for.

…i didn’t notice this in too much detail when it happened, but was dumbfounded and laughing when i watched it when SNY re-aired the game later in the day…

…i mean, i would think santana would be ultra-focused, speaking to nobody, thinking only about the game… yet, he’s all smiles, totally comfortable, and having fun, and he still went out and pitched a very good game, keeping the opposition hitless through the first three innings

WFAN and the print media will not be happy that the Mets are having fun before the game. Johan, watch your back. If he loses a couple in a row…this will be the reason all over the radio and papers.

    • starz31 says:

which is ridiculous…these guys have so much pressure on them in every pitch and every at-bat, whats wrong with these guys having funny and staying loose before the game even begins. To me, this looks great. It means they are comfortable. That doesnt mean they arent serious, they most certainly are, but they are loose and can focus on baseball and eachother, not what will be in the newspaper, or what the guy in the 3rd row is yelling…they can go out and just play the game.

      • oleosmirf says:

well the yankee robots show no emotion when they play.

winning teams have winning attitudes and Santana can do whatever he wants before the game…hes the best pitcher in baseball and everyone knows it…

        • bkfitz says:

“well the yankee robots show no emotion when they play.”

Definitely didn’t help them yesterday. LOL

          • Mr_North_Jersey says:

I think after the last 2 years for me I need to focus solely on My Mets run to the post season.

It’s always fun to give Yankee fans a hard time but…

The cross town rivals and all that they represent will not matter an inch if the Mets fail in 2009 once again.

Therefore I have adopted the following:

My 2009 NY MetsBlog Mission Statement

            1. I will not bash just hold accountable a NY Met on Metsblog.

            2. I will rally our team in spite of their flaws.

            3. Every game will be treated as game 162.

            4. I will not celebrate till we clinch a post season birth no matter how big a lead we may have.

            5. “Lets Go Mets” will be my rallying cry.

            6. All games vs Phillies I will make my voice heard unmercifully so as to strike fear in their hearts.

            7. I will vote all of our blue & orange to the All Star game.

            8. I will not be concerned with our cross town rivals unless we are facing them on the field.

            9. Booing will be only for the visiting team.

            10. Citi Field is my house only the Blue & Orange are welcome. I will give “Home Field Advantage” meaning again.

Lets Go Mets!!! Lets Go Mets!!! Lets Go Mets!!!

  2. cb32 says:

Funniest one to me is He and Delgado “inflating” themselves and then Delgado releasing the valve in Johan’s chest to deflate him.

Confidence, arrogance, who cares, they have fun and it is more fun watching guys who are having fun and obviously care about what they are doing.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I’m with you, that was my fave by a longshot.

    • Stockton College Mets Fan says:

By far my favorite too…i thought johan was like a butterfly and carlos was pulling him down to earth lol, thought that was a little fairy-ish. Thanks for clearing that up haha.

  3. RichardK says:

I love all the celebritory stuff, it’s what made the 2006 season so great to watch!

And if the other teams dont like it. Guess what? Too F-in bad. Get used to it.

Most of them celebrate anyway, and because of some kind of internal yankee/new york hatred they bag on the Mets like they are not allowed to do the same thing.

  4. Jaded1983 says:

Did you guys also notice that Shef was always the first one to give congrats to someone yesterday? He was one of the first to pat Johan on the back, and high five murph……wonder if he actually is a good clubhouse guy and what he said in his press interview was legit..

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I think he is trying his best to be a good teammate and behave, but honestly even the most optimistic fan has to know this act will only go on for so long if he isn’t playing enough.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

i liked the closeup on JJ when krod closed out the game. I dont think this guy will have a problem being setup man at all. Mostly because he will get his save opps too i imagine

      • Coolpapabell says:

I really do hope Wagner can come back in August to step on the Phillies throats just when everyon starts talking about the Mets inability to hold their position down the stretch. Wagner to putz to K-Rod oh my.

      • dave27 says:

Putz will be fine. He wants to win. And he knows if he has a monster year he will get top closer money in free-agency…no one is going to forget who he is.

        • bkfitz says:

Exactly. If he’s healthy and has a good year, he’ll still get good money considering he did it in New York which is no easy feat.

  5. IAmKeithHernandez says:

This is hilarious. How does he remember all of them?!

    • bkfitz says:

It’s probably not hard for him to remember this since he probably remembers how to pitch to every hitter he faces on a regular basis.

  6. BaltimoreMets says:

Johan can do whatever he wants – this was good stuff.

  7. Dirtysanchez says:

lol it was great he is getting along with everyone and i have no idea how he remembered everyones handshake. Looks like jose has some competition.

  8. Coolpapabell says:

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have seen in the majors. Its great. Johan taking the leadership position. I have not idea how he remebers them all.

I was surprised that the Reyes-Johan handshake was meh, they need to work on that. Jose can do better.

  9. bucknersankles says:

It’s called confidence, Johan is the man and he knows he’s the man.

  10. CaseStreet says:

    I want one too.

High-five, low-five, and an exploding fist bump!

  11. dominicanboy08 says:

    johan is the man!!!

  12. khmustache says:

uhoh… jimmy rollins is gonna be soooo mad when he sees that…

    • RichardK says:

Guess what? he can sue us. Cause they aint gonna stop because the Phillies are offended.

If they dont like it, thats their problem not ours. Too f-in bad, get used to it.

I’m getting sick and tired of all these teams bagging on the Mets because they have some kind of seeded hatred for the Yankees and feel like beating on the younger brother or something. Most of them do the same stuff anyway, and you dont see us whining and crying about it.

      • khmustache says:

i agree with you. the mets do get an unfair rap in that department. i personally enjoy watching a team that makes the other teams angry. i think a lot of what has been missing in the last few seasons is an f u attitude. i hope the clubhouse stays this way the rest of the season.

      • Coolpapabell says:

I can’t wait for K-rod to strike him out or Ryan Howard out for the last out in CBP. They will all have to see his celebration.

    • bkfitz says:

Jimmy Rollins’ mouth: The only thing that runs faster than Jose Reyes.

Rollins can blow it out his rear-end. It’s not as if none of the Phillies showboat. Only one who doesn’t is Utley. Howard always takes his sweet time heading to first when he hits a HR.

  13. fongulalou says:

    Now THAT, Right THERE, Is
    Tremendous!!!
It’s Gonna be a Real Good Season!
    Lets Go Mets!

  14. keystonetom says:

I continue to be impressed by Johan. I hope his guts and spirit rubs off on everyone.

  15. Metshead1974 says:

Post that in your locker Victorino. I’m glad someone on this team is taking the leadership role.

  16. RememberTheMaine says:

You know what I loved? Seeing almost everyone stand up to do the handshakes with him, if they were sitting. It’s like they have too much respect to not do so, and it has the lovely side-effect of getting the whole team “up” for the game. True leadership.

    • therealsince86 says:

I would like to think that was the reason but it appeared that the ones that stood up were ones that could not have done their shake without standing up. Ex. Castillo.

Either way, looks fun. Looks like they have spent some bonding time in ST as well. Something I am sure Jerry has had a part in.

  17. ny1012 says:

The Delgado one was absolutely hilarious, and I love how Santana even had handshakes for the trainers lol, the one guy did the robot lmao. Let’s Go Mets f^&* the Phillies

  18. shamWOWmets says:

that would probably go into handshake hall of fame!

  19. BIGpelfcyyoung says:

that’s the best thing I’ve ever seen. who did he grab as if he was gonna lay them out? was that BIG PELF?? that was the funniest one, I like the robot move by the trainer too.

    • dannyjwkim says:

      that is my guess too.

i bet the thinking there was “how funny would it be if i threatened to beat up the tallest player on the team”

i bet that handshake looks a lot better when they’re both standing…

  20. afranzo says:

Hey – 1st Post – always read them, just never got around to setting up an account and posting something -

    - But the one thing that stood out to me in this video (besides the fun handshake and laughing going on in the dugout) was how SERIOUS David Wright was… no goofy (yet funny) hand shakes… the kid looks like he is determined to say something this season – he just gave everyone a man hug – the kid looks DETERMINED to make a point this season… Cheers! to a happy and well pitched game 1….

  21. mouserdz says:

Ah man… now I have to learn all those handshakes.

  22. MetsFan4Decades says:

Johan is quickly becoming one of my favorite Met players of all time. Gonna break down and get me a Santana jersey.

He just continues to impress, and not only on the mound.

  23. dannyjwkim says:

so i cant stop watching the video. and knowing that others love it, i’m trying to figure out at least the noticeable ones.

who’s the bald dude where they end up doing the confused robot thingie? (latter half of video)

and the other bald guy where they both doff their cap is alex cora right? (earlier part of video)… Read More

and the one where johan grabs him by his shirt and threatens to punch the guy in the face is big pelf rite?

    • mets2010 says:

the bald head guys are the strength and conditioning guys the first one leads the stretches and workouts and the second is the physical therapist.

      • dannyjwkim says:

cool. i could have sworn the doffing cap handshake guy was alex cora tho. haha. thanks mets2010.

        • irbzyk says:

looks like the 2006 swagger is back! Johan is THE MAN! looks like these guys really like each other as a team and have great chemistry. I am SO EXCITED about this season!

3.1 SHO innings by the Mets bullpen in preserving a Johan win? DAMN RIGHT, GET USED TO IT!

*****Anyone see any of the Cubs game last night? Heilman (who changed his uni. #) gave up a run which ruined Zambrano’s SHO opportunity. He immediately got yanked and booed as Z shook his head in disbelief…I stood up and clapped and yelled because he won’t be doing that for us this season!!!!!

          • therealsince86 says:

Heilman got the DP, Zambrano was as much to blame by puting runners on 1st and 2nd no outs.

          • irbzyk says:

            thanks for bursting my bubble.

i must have just turned the game on as he was being yanked as I didn’t see any DP.

  24. Seavertheman says:

Johan is definitely the MAN. I was horrified to look at his entry at Baseball Reference and find it is sponsored by Sillies Nation with the pithy comment “The Mets are a joke”. This must not be allowed to stand!

  25. dave27 says:

I actually don’t think anyone would have a problem with this. What some people have an issue with is perceived showboating, not pre-game enthusiasm.

  26. 911nafstem says:

I really hope the Mets step up the dancing this year and really get under everyone’s skin.

  27. VCarver says:

Whoa. That is so awesome. What a great player he is. Can you imagine A-Rod doing something like that, being so self-absorbed as he is? Santana is not only a great pitcher but a great teammate and leader. Worth every last penny.

OT and in the spirit of a little Schadenfreude .,.. read Phil Mushnick’s column in the Post about some problems with the new Yankee Stadium. On their telecasts, part of the view is seen through netting, and then there is the really garish advertising that overloads the outfield areas. The advertising looks really awful.

I thought the Yankees had done a better job than the Mets by not selling the naming rights to their new stadium, but then they totally ruined the intent by putting in all that ostentatious advertising. So overall, I got to say the Mets have done a better job with Citi. It’s the nicer new park.

    • VCarver says:

Here’s the link to Mushnick’s article:

      nypost.com/seven/04062009/sports/mets/new_mets_field_clobbers_yanks_from_tv_st_163157.htm

    • Dirtysanchez says:

idk but to me..the new yankee stadium looks just like the old one. Citi has alot of advertising as well but it lookes better. To think the yanks dropped what a billion dollars on that stadium….ripoff. I guess most of it went to the hangout areas throughout the stadium but i would be mad as hell to be a yankee fan and their new stadium looks just about the same.

      • VCarver says:

If I were a Yankee fan, I wouldn’t mind that the new stadium looked the same — as long as you got the newer more modern amenities like restrooms and concessions. But the netting during TV broadcasts? LOL. I bet they scramble to fix that real soon.

As for the billboard advertising, at Citi it looks a lot more tasteful and less intrusive than it does at Yankee stadium.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

lol agreed. I was more on the line that the tix must be more expensive considering the ballpark. I guess yankee stadium caters to the suits but still, as a yankee fan its gotta be an arm and a leg. I agree what guavara said but its a billion dollar stadium! I mean i love shea and all, i ran the bases when i was a kid but citi is a BIG upgrade from shea. Citi is what a new park is supposed to look like. The yanks didnt change much but the fans are stuck with the bill.

      • shea_guevara says:

But that’s probably what most Yankee fans want–a newer stadium that looks like the old one.

    • flipluva says:

i always said that the “new” yankee stadium looks fairly similar to the old one.. with exception of the unsightly ads in CF. over 1 billion for a stadium that looks like the old one… what a waste.

  28. WozzyBear says:

I love it. I hope this is a sort of “F-You” to all the teams who bi$ch and moan about the mets show-boating.

This is baseball. It’s a game. It’s fun. And it’s about time the Mets stop trying to please veryone else and just do what works for them. Screw everyone else. Just go out and take it.

    • The Reporter formerly known as La Velle E. Neal III says:

And it’s only a matter of time before the NL East begins to talk trash about Johan’s pre-game celebrations. Let them have their fun! Go Mets!

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Eh, it’s in the dugout. If a team complains about another team’s histrionics in their own dugout, the complaining team is looking too hard for something to upset themselves.

The previous complaints have been about Reyes on the field. If they start complaining about stuff in the dugout they’re hypocrites.

    • flipluva says:

johan was doing that in the met dugout and what happens there is nobody’s concern. now if he did that outside the dugout then that’s another story. there’s nothing wrong about loosening up the team… he was not showing up the Reds or anybody at that. loosen up, guys.

      • AlexOchoa96 says:

Agreed! Below the top step, they can do anything they want. People are reaching if they have a problem with this. The game hadn’t even started yet. What’s wrong with trying to keep everybody loose? I agree that they need to act like grown ups on the field, but among themselves in the dugout they can have fun. Why not? People, it’s a game!

  29. Jaded1983 says:

Just throwing something out there regarding Putz. So far he seems like a team guy, that big bear hug he gave santana in the beggining of the game (i think).

If he continues to produce the way he is capable, id have no problem with Omar picking up his option for next year (which he will) and then pay Putz closer money to stay as a set up man.

Pay the man, keep our bullpen dominate. Do you guys see that happening?

    • BIGpelfcyyoung says:

Kind of premature but IF the mets payed him closer money to set-up for a winning team then I can see him staying. the bigger if is will the mets pay 2 closers again?

    • therealsince86 says:

Either way if he is successful his option will be picked up. Can you imagine the haul we could get for either Krod or Putz in a trade? I hope they both stay but either way….

      • Jaded1983 says:

thats exactly why we will pick up his option regardless. either the haul or draft picks we’d get, omar would be a fool not to.

completely pre-mature thinking, but id be all for spending the money to have two closers. bullpens are quickly becoming the lynch pins to teams seasons. In my opinion the market will shift for these guys and Relief pitchers will come at a premium because of it.

        • therealsince86 says:

Agreed. Who knows Putz might start a trend. Question is we know he will be fine this year but will he be happy next year setting up in a true contract year?

    • njitalnstaln says:

THe major problem with that is now you’re taking money away from signing an outfielder or a firstbaseman (2 holes to fill in the lineup for 2010), not to mention setting the salary bar way to high for other set-up men around the league.

If Putz is successful, he’ll want to hit the open market where the Mets can pick up a draft pick if he’s keeps his “Type-A” statis.

Keep the money and sign a 1B or OF next off season, and make Bobby Parnell (or a cheaper replacement) the set up man for 2010.

Way to far off, so let’s wait and see….

  30. VelvetFoot says:

That handshake parade is too much!!

    • We Were Throwbacks says:

You have clearly never been part of a team in your life Velvet, and you posting here is too much.

  31. Dirtysanchez says:

What do we think about razor shines call with wright yesterday

    • therealsince86 says:

To me that was on Wright for being indecisive. Shines was being aggressive and did not notice that Wright had uh… hesitated.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

That’s what I saw too on the replay. Too hard to tell though if DWright was picking up Razor at that point or he was trying to but not seeing any indication of what he should do. Think that bobble was over his shoulder so he didn’t catch it?

    • Mister Koo says:

If Luis Aguayo was still coaching third base, he would have waved Reyes home on his infield hit.

  32. dannyjwkim says:

i also just noticed the handshake between putz and delgado.

they both scratch their goatees at the end of theirs.

    hahaha tha’s great

  33. resident16 says:

    he’s the man

  34. danthemanmurphy says:

    I absolutely love this!
It definitely pumped me up (even more) for the game… I’m sure it did for those guys too.
Makes me love Santana even more… as if that was necessary.

  35. slangon says:

was that john maine about halfway through, with the bright orange gloves?

    • dannyjwkim says:

yup. that was one of the longest ones too. i love how maine was busy handshaking right before and then nonchalantly but still very seriously did his handshake with johan without skipping a beat. haha

  36. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Off topic:

And have to agree with Matt and others about the new MLB network. I watched all winter and it only got better when spring training started and now that the season is here.

Love their latest promo on the season starting:
‘It’s good to touch the green, green gra-s-s of home’……

(and of course I forgot about the word modification on this format – originally still awaiting moderation…)

  37. IronMan says:

    that is gold

  38. BIGpelfcyyoung says:

I have a question, I’m sure I can finn the answer somewhere but don’t have time to search..

How many Met games since the 2nd half of ‘06 through last year did we give our bullpen a 1 run lead with 10 outs to get and the game ended with the same score? I’m going to say the answer is 0.

  39. swirlywand says:

HE CAN HANDSHAKE PARADE UNTIL KINGDOM COME! as long as he keeps winning…he’s so freaking awesome!

  40. Zoe says:

I loved this. Loved, loved. Team chemistry can go a long way, and Johan’s been taking a leadership role better than anyone on the team so far.

  41. Stockton College Mets Fan says:

I hope they do it on TOP of the dugout when they play the phillies!

  42. Nate W. says:

This is all well and good because he wins. Imagine the reaction if Perez did this and then went out and laid an egg…

Santana is so good he must get bored.

  43. AroidKissingMirrors says:

Matt r u serious? I dont see anything wrong with this..it shows that he is a leader…and I’ve seen him do this last year too.

    • Karl Schnee says:

speaking of leaders…..your name is really infantile and borderline effeminate.

      Warm regards,

      Karl

      • ~*~Sparkly Unicorn~*~ says:

I’m not sure effeminate means what you think it means…

        • We Were Throwbacks says:

          Hahahaha, that’s awesome.

And Aroid, Matt never said there was anything wrong with it. In fact, he sounds very much in favor of Johan doing this. I don’t even know where you would get that he was against it from what he posted.

  44. chrisgmetsfan13 says:

This is Great! it’s nice to see a happy team. Johan is the man. This shows how good the chemistry is. Each guy has their own customized handshake HAHA that’s great. GO METS

  45. vic79 says:

    i like

  46. RickyR says:

One thing I noticied when I watched this video was that not only does Johan have a unique handshake for everyone but it also seems to that everyone has their own handshake for everyone one else.

  47. the yud says:

I watched this yesterday.. it was amazing that he could remember each unique handshake with each of his teammates! As I kept watching, I got more and more amazed…. until I was laughing out loud!

Go Johan and LET’S GO METS!!
