Post-Game: Mets 9 Reds 7
By Mike Nichols - Apr 8, 2009 11:11 pm

Tonight’s Game:

  • The Mets (2-0) defeated the Reds (0-2) by the score of 9-to-7 tonight.

On the Mound:

  • Mike Pelfrey earned the victory, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out two over five innings pitched.
  • The Mets bullpen allowed three runs on four hits and five walks in four innings.
  • Frankie Rodriguez earned his second save of the season in typical fashion.

At the Plate:

  • Carlos Delgado was 2-for-5 with 4 RBI, including a two-run first inning homerun.
  • Brian Schneider had two hits in five at-bats, including a key three-run double in the seventh.
  • Carlos Beltran drove in two runs.
  • The Mets were 3-for-9 with RISP.

Random Thoughts:

  • Whew! I know it’s nerve-wracking, but get used to it, that is a typical K-Rod save.
  • Not the outing I had hoped Pelfrey would have, but after a very rough first inning he managed to settle down and get through five. Pelfrey was actually very efficient after his 44-pitch first.
  • Thank goodness the Mets hitters, namely Beltran and Schneider, came through with runners on, or this could have a been very ugly game for the Mets.

Game Ball:

  • Tonight’s Game Ball goes to Carlos Beltran and Brian Schneider for coming through in the clutch.

The Happy Recast:

  • Immediately following SNY’s on-air post-game show, MetsBlog’s Jordan Zakarin and MMiLB’s Chris Guy will debut SNY.tv’s The Happy Recast; a live, online, call-in show on BlogTalkRadio, featuring guests, a recap of the night’s minor-league action, and, of course, your phone calls about the game. To listen live, immediately following SNY’s on-air post-game show, go here, and to call in, dial (718) 664-6176.

Tomorrow:

  • The Mets play the finale of their three-game series against the Reds tomorrow in Cincinnati, with Oliver Perez facing Bronson Arroyo, starting at 12:35 p.n. EDT.

If this is typical, I may be dead of a heart attack by the Allstar break.

    • fightoffyourdemons says:

Come on now, didn’t you think that was fun?

I need more things in my room to throw that won’t break.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

hahaha – you’ll be in good company, my friend.

    • IspeakMets says:

Based on that statistic, I’m pretty sure I’ve been dead by the All-Star break for each season over the past decade with Franco, Benitez, Looper, Wagner, and now Rodriguez…

What does a guy have to do to get a nice, boring 9th inning!!!

      • Ceetar says:

I know it’s easy to forget, but Wagner pitched a Closers No-Hitter last year. He went like 35 batters without a hit.

  2. brock kingman says:

KRod was throwing 2-0 breaking balls and changes in that spot…he throws hard, has great stuff, and is FEARLESS.

Great win, as opening day was.

And where are the guys ready to throw Pelf under the bus in the 1st??

    LET’S GO METS!!!

I am not sure which is better, winning or SHUTTING UP the Nattering Nabobs of Negativity!!

  3. NYMetsTalk says:

I was so sure he would blow that… how the hell does he do it?

Man what a win, sorry for the negative comments in the GDT guys i get very pessimistic b/c of priors seasons >_>

    • brock kingman says:

Your name should be NYMets WHINE.

      • therealsince86 says:

Thats better than what I had.
NYMETSBITCH. But then I thought that might have a different meaning and I don’t know him that well.

        • ~*~Sparkly Unicorn~*~ says:

I like NYMETSBITCH. It reminds me of “It’s Britney, bitch”.

        • brock kingman says:

          LOL!! That IS better.

But TRS, how cool was this game—how Pelf settled in, how we kept tacking on runs, how KRod was FEARLESS in throwing 2–0 breaking balls and changes….

This team has some serious potential.

          • therealsince86 says:

Agreed, most impressed by Pelfrey. There is no way that Maine or Perez do what Pelfrey did tonight.

          • brock kingman says:

And probably no way Wagner gets out of that 9th unscathed. KRod looked unhittable Monday, and today did not have it, and STILL willed himself out of it with unreal guts and heart….I like it.

        • therealsince86 says:

Actually Krod looked unhittable again tonight, it’s just he could not command his pitches. If they were near the strike zone they were still unhittable.

          • enterkrod says:

hey guys…you probably dont care…but i was really impressed with bobby parnell tonight…i mean the lowest he threw was 97….kids going to be good

          • brock kingman says:

            Good point TRS.

And enterkrod, I agree…we may have found Lindstrom’s replacement…that kid can throw and may very well get a lot better….

          • therealsince86 says:

I like Parnell. I hope we did not give up on him being a starter too soon, however. A #5 starter is worth a lot more than a 6-7th inning man.

  4. MetsFan4Decades says:

Hats off to both Pelfry and KRod for coming thru w/o their best stuff.

    • brock kingman says:

Should we be psyched for how Pelf composed himself after that first inning or what?

Very different from opening day, but another great win, and on the road.

We have won one incredibly well-pitched low-scoring tight game, and one sloppy high-scoring game….what a great way to build confidence for the players….

      • DavidWrightIsClutch says:

yes, most certainly. As you said, no way Maine or Perez would be able to settle after getting rocked. It is inevitable that they will all get shaken up a bit their first game, but as long as they find their way from there like Pelf did, we will be alright.

  5. metsfan121 says:

jeez that was one crazy game

at least krod can get himself out of trouble especially considering the combo of delgado and bill welke screwed him over

this is going to be one crazy season if today is any indication

  6. Forks28Attack says:

idk…i think game ball goes to alex gonzalez lol

  7. My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

Johan is so good he gets credit for other people’s wins.

    • Maine Man says:

yea..i saw that too. but by the time i refreshed nichols fixed it

    • My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

Ah I see that was fixed.

I don’t know about the new post game guys. Mazz was doing a fine job after a while.

  8. Maine Man says:

Go ollie….its all you, show ‘em what you got…give us 6 strong and let parnell green putz and krod handle the rest

  9. reyesoflight says:

yea like matt said this is a typical krod save. if u watched wen espn showed all of his saves last year he had men on base, but he gets the job done.. 2-0 LETS GET ITTT

  10. Dirtysanchez says:

I think i lost a few years off my life lol…
Good job pelf for settling down and shutting down the offense after the 1st
Really good job for the offense for fighting back!!! Something that we have not done very well of.
Good job bullpen for holding the lead.
No more experimenting with feliciano and RHB

  11. bkfitz says:

Delgado had a lead glove tonight.

  12. Dirtysanchez says:

BTW…what a bad call imo on the deglado error!

  13. PAPDOG67 says:

“that is a typical K-Rod save” ??? C’mon Mr. Nichols, give the guy a little more credit, he didn’t become one of the best closers in the game by loading the bases all the time. We will see our fair share of 1-2-3 inning saves out of him.

  14. therealsince86 says:

That is NOT a typical KRod save. IF it were his career WHIP would be 3+ instead of 1.11.

    • Sylar says:

His WHIP last year was 1.28, so while it usually won’t be as ugly as tonight, he will put on baserunners..

      • therealsince86 says:

True still gives up very few hits but walks have increased the last 2 years.

  15. Mike Go says:

Game 2 but it feels like Game 158

  16. Mr North Jersey says:

Game 2 and I feel like we already are playin September Baseball

  17. My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

I’ll take sloppy and protracted wins vs neat and tidy losses.

  18. MetsFan4Decades says:

hahahaha – this KRod interview….not only does he have the same accent Ollie does, he keeps repeating the same phrase – ‘have to make my pitches’. If I had my eyes closed, I’d swear that was Ollie talking.

    • therealsince86 says:

If you had your eyes closed you would be Perez pitching. LOL.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Unlike the accent and the comments, I sincerely think this is an unusual outing for Frankie. Ollie, on the other had, you just never know -lol.

  19. enterkrod says:

surprisingly i really honestly wasnt all that nervous until the final pitch..just because even though the bases were loaded there was one out…bases loaded…which means a forceout anywhere…and we still had a 2 run lead…not until the final pitch to the warning track did i actually breathe in…lol

    • brock kingman says:

Wow, I have to admit I was STRESSED! I did think your man would do it.

He is something else…he can blow everyone away like Monday, or work his way into AND OUT OF—a crazy jam!

And he is not afraid to throw any pitch in any spot, obviously!

      • enterkrod says:

lol…hes very very good..lol…that curveball is just ridiculous…just didnt have his command tonight…thats alright..a win is a win…jerry manuel is the man…hahahahahaha…glad to have him in the back of the bullpen….LOVE parnell too might i add…should have brought him back out

        • brock kingman says:

Yeah, his curve is crazy….and I was really happy about Parnell too….having him for the 6th and 7th throwing 97??

        • therealsince86 says:

Don’t you think they had to pinch hit for him?

          • enterkrod says:

oh with tatis thats right…sorry i forgot they were at the bottom of the lineup

          • enterkrod says:

and hopefully we can continue with the situational hitting…i mean lets face it…half of it was luck tonight..with the trip in right field and reyes blocking the ball…

  20. LL says:

That was crazy tonight. Don’t know how much of this I could handle this year again. But if it would’ve been last year, we would’ve lost. I’ll take it though.

  21. fongulalou says:

Jeez, For a second I thought I was
    watching Armando Benitez.

  22. IAmKeithHernandez says:

    So…what’s our magic number?

  23. Ceetar says:

Glad K-Rod got the practice for the 4-out saves with the WBC. worked out well tonight.

    • The Belt says:

Lol! Nice. Is it weird that I was more nervous about how met fans would react to a blown save rather than about the actual possiblity of a blown save? Both bullets averted. Sweep tomm!!

  24. putz-rod.com says:

    ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER PUTZ-ROD! (sorta…)

  25. ProudMetFan says:

I sure hope that isnt typical K Rod, cause if it is, I’ll be dead by mid may.

  26. blains2008 says:

Now that my sight has returned and I can breathe, looks like we might have second half Delgado. He’s the key to the offense.

  27. Mr North Jersey says:

NY Met Positives After 2 Games

    A) Santana continues to look like an Ace.
    B) Murphy is earning his stripes
    C) Parnell can bring it
    D) Putz/Krod Combo no blown saves
    E) Delgado looking like 2nd half Delgado of 2008
    F) Beltran is still making Minaya look good

    • ProudMetFan says:

I dont mean to sound pessimistic, ut there are a couple of Cons so far, right?

  28. bkfitz says:

“Frankie Rodriguez earned his second save of the season in typical fashion.”

This is not typical fashion because of 2 things:

    1) Delgado made a HUGE gaffe. He shouldn’t have even tried to throw to 3rd to begin with.
    2) He did not have full command of his fastball. That doesn’t happen every night.

This would have been an easier save if one of the above were different.

  29. Starr247 says:

Don’t know if anybody got the broadcast by Extra Innings but I HATE the Cincy announcers. Every pot-shot they could take at the Mets, they did. To hear them tell it, the Mets were a sub-par team.

    • lagranderusty10 says:

face it other than the dodgers or the sox – we probably have the best announcers in baseball – hands down!!

  30. lagranderusty10 says:

good morning my friends its time for the next day post win hangover edition of ” this day in mets infamy ” so here we go

first off – birthday greetings are due for former middle reliever from ‘64-67 Jerry Hinsley (1944)
Graeme “the aussie yankee” Lloyd (1967)
    Transactions:
New York Mets claimed Greg “goose eggs!!” Goossen on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 9, 1965.

and breaking news !!! mo vaughn has announced his comeback – with the mets !!! – he said “if the chef can do it why can’t i !!!” – terms of the contract have not been disclosed as of yet but it is said that stock in popeyes, coke , cold stone and weight watchers will be transfered fFROM VAUGHN TO THE METS !!! – to recoup the money lost from the ma-doff scandal

  31. number15 says:

i’m still a little shellshocked that the season has actually begun. this is great

  32. paulaecinc says:

Not a knock against DWright, he is one of my favorites, but doesnt he look a little bulky?

I think he needs to lose a few lbs.

    • JINBK says:

I actually thought he looked slimmer than seasons past, but not much.

He just doesn’t look great at the plate right now. He’s not staying in so he can take the ball oustide to right field which is his real strength, but he can handle anything inside right now. I have no worries that he’ll be absolutely fine.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

he looks smaller, not sure where your getting bulky from

    • LGNYM says:

Agreed wtih the others. I don’t think he looks “bulky” at all….he looks smaller if anything.
