News: The Marlon Anderson Era is Over

by Matthew Cerrone

Update, 3:15 pm:

Marlon Anderson has been designated for assignment by the Mets, to make room on the roster for Livan Hernandez.

Original Post:

The Mets will activate Livan Hernandez this morning.

Jerry Manuel told reporters the team will announce a corresponding roster move later today, most likely prior to the game.

…all signs suggest Marlon Anderson will be released… i know marlon is popular in the clubhouse, he’s said to be a good guy, management loves him, but it’s the right move… especially since Jerry Manuel is holding back his starting pitchers so early in the season, and already relying a lot on his bullpen, which has thrown 14 of the 36 innings the team has played this season… basically, it’s either keep 12 pitchers or keep marlon… and, the bullpen is far bigger priority right now than protecting a popular, but unproductive player

I'm glad to see Marlon go, but watch the Phillies pick him up, and then he will kill us.

Nick_L April 11, 2009 at 4:17 pm

nah marlon is terrible

Andrew Wharton April 11, 2009 at 12:42 pm

It's time for Marlon to leave. I love the guy, but he hurts this bench because he has become an automatic out. I would much rather see a guy like Reed or Sheffield (ugh) up in his spot because at least they can make solid contact.

JGuz April 11, 2009 at 12:46 pm

When is Sheffield getting some consistent at bats?

Xavier22 April 11, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Jerry said he there's a chance he might play tomorrow. Shef himself said he need to lose 20 lbs before he can play the outfield effectively. He never even picked up a glove during ST because it was assumed he'd be a DH with the Tigers.

ProudMetsFan April 11, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Im not really sure why we are still talking about this. Marlon was nice, but hes no use anymore. Good Luck to Marlon in the future.

FonzieBear17 April 11, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Anyone remember the inside the park home-run he hit vs. Anaheim a few years back. That's what I'll remember about him. Pretty sure Floyd hit a HR in the 11th to win it.I think it was 2006, what a game that was! Good luck Marlon.

Matt Classic April 11, 2009 at 12:53 pm

How about releasing a far less useful player like Castillo?

Andrew Wharton April 11, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Castillo far less useful than Anderson? That is laughable…at least Castillo can play some defense and get on base every now and then. Marlon has become an automatic out

Xavier22 April 11, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Plus Castillo is owed far more than Marlon.

I hope fans give Luis a chance when he plays at Citi. I remember in 2006 when Jose Valentin was off to a slow start and he got booed a lot at Shea. Then he turned it around and everybody loved him. But as Luis was booed during the exhibition games with the Red Sox, I suspect he will be presumed guilty until proven innocent by most of the fans.

ProudMetsFan April 11, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Im tired of of fans automatically booing people like Castillo before he even steps up to the plate. Give the poor guy a chance.

Sco Dig April 11, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Its time for Marlon to go. He was Willie's boy anyway

sincekindergarten April 11, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Exactly. Marlon's a good guy, and I wish him well, but I can see him in a Brewers uniform soon . . . ?

mrld April 11, 2009 at 1:03 pm

Castillo is not the problem.Every team has a player in just for defense. Its players like wright who supposed to drive in runs who apparently can't drive in runs when it counts. Also the middle relief can't hod teams back.

TRS86 April 11, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Wright has only had 4 AB's with RISP so far this year. He is hitting over .350 for the season and has an OBP of over .500.

run7run April 11, 2009 at 2:58 pm

i know only 4 ab's with RISP sounds like very few, but according to a season's worth of data from 2004, the avg #3 hitter has RISP 27.9% of his ab's. so far this season wright has 4 in 14 ab's = 28.6% and 0 rbi. so, he's already had more chances than avg, so the "only 4 ab's" discussion has little merit.

Sylar April 11, 2009 at 3:06 pm

It's only 4 ABs, which means your argument has little merit.

run7run April 11, 2009 at 3:14 pm

i understand it's a small sample size. i'm not saying he should've come through already, but just that things probably aren't gonna get better for him in the opportunities dept. that's my argument (not that he should come through EVERY 4/14), and thus, it does have merit.

jeenyus245 April 11, 2009 at 3:44 pm

i'd still like to see beltran hit third instead of wright

OssMetsFan April 11, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Wright will be fine, he does not typically do good in April, he has to get his timing down and he seems to be suffering from a stiff back right now, he'll be good as new in a few days i'm sure.

TRS86 April 11, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Hopefully Jerry will shake up the lineup and try and get some people going.
Reyes, Castillo, Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Murphy, Curch, Schnieder for a few days. It extends the lineup a little.

Andrew Wharton April 11, 2009 at 1:38 pm

I don't know about that, TRS. I agree Wright should slide down to fifth, but why move Castillo to second when he just isn't getting on base? Murphy is a perfect #2 hitter: He is patient (allows Reyes to steal), he has a good idea of what he wants to do, and he almost always puts the ball in play.

I think: Reyes, Murphy, Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Church, Castillo, Schneider.

I don't like Schneider batting ahead of Castillo, especially following a lefty in Church. Plus, Schneider usually comes through when we need a big hit, while Castillo doesn't.

TRS86 April 11, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Again it's more about puting players in positions where they have been successful. I posted Castillo's stats hitting 7th and 8th somewhere on this new debate format. Don't know where they are. Anyway he is terrible in those spots for his career.

Andrew Wharton April 11, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I see…I just don't want him to be terrible in the 2nd hole and totally disrupt what offense we do have going so far, that's all.

TRS86 April 11, 2009 at 2:14 pm

I would actually rather him be there instead of constanly coming up with RISP. Like I said if he continues to struggle down there you have to try it and see if he can get going. If he does not then you have larger issues anyway.

TRS86 April 11, 2009 at 1:32 pm

I don't see it. No one will pay him 400,000. There are still too many FA ahead of him.

Vic April 11, 2009 at 2:21 pm

did Reed not smoke a single to tie the game last night?…….there is ur lefty PH plus they have Tatis and Sheffield on the bench…………..just release Marlon already

Andrew Wharton April 11, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Well, Lindstrom was serving up fastball after fastball, so it was only a matter of time before someone sat on one and drove in Beltran.

However, I agree Marlon Anderson needs to go…

Vic April 11, 2009 at 2:22 pm

the bottom of the lineup is week. I like Murphy 2 but Castillo may have to be put their to get depth at the bottom……….it will happen eventually if Castilo can't hit

oleosmirf April 11, 2009 at 3:11 pm

i've been saying this since the beginning. Castillo takes more pitches than anyone in baseball and loves to ground out so that would work with Jose on base.

then instead of having to pinch hit for Schnedier in the 7 spot, you put Murphy there and let him drive in runs

nymetskid11368 April 11, 2009 at 3:27 pm

why r ppl wanting 2 trade castro i no this is old but schinder stinks badly we shuld of signed pudge for 1 year 2 million atleast he still got sum pop left schinder looks like a good clubhouse guy but hes production stinks and castro has a good relation wit johan ollie etc etc

bkfitz April 11, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Ivan Rodriguez stinks. He was so bad last year he became Jose Molina's back up.

jeenyus245 April 11, 2009 at 3:37 pm

can we trade castillo and marlon to the mariners for jose lopez?

metsmerizer April 11, 2009 at 10:07 pm

I don't tink seattle would make that move… but if they would… DO IT NOW OMAR!

John Garret Olerud April 11, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Interesting that an article about Livan Hernandez and Marlon Anderson chooses to include a picture of Carlos Delgado.

Angelo April 11, 2009 at 7:41 pm

That's not Delgado, that is a picture of Marlon Anderson when he wore number 22.

John Garret Olerud April 11, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Now that I looked it up, Delgado did wear #23. I only remembered him wearing 9 and 18.
http://mbtn.net/player/anderson-marlon

John Garret Olerud April 11, 2009 at 8:17 pm

By Delgado, I mean Marlon.

mr_met April 11, 2009 at 3:56 pm

or they just simply could have gone without signing a 40-year-old steroid user

mcEwing April 11, 2009 at 4:00 pm

If Marlon gets cut..and not picked up..could or would the METS offer him a minor league deal.

Mets Go April 11, 2009 at 4:01 pm

It will be Marlon. Jerry won't go with 11 pitchers.

nymx5793 April 11, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Sadly, I think Marlon will go.

I think he is a great guy and a great clubhouse influence, but I think he just isnt hitting. Maybe he can clear waivers and be reassigned to minor league camp or something like that.

bayridgedave April 11, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Castillo deserves no such treatment, IMO. Leave Murphy where is.

bayridgedave April 11, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Castillo is a guy who IMO deserves no benefit of the doubt. The guy admitted to the Mets brass that he wasn't "dedicated" to playing baseball last season. Fans boo bad performance, especially if it is accompanied with total lack of effort, which Castillo displayed a lot of last season. People want him gone because he is the symbol of the apathy and indifferent attitudes that continue to infect this team, and the franchise.

metsfan60 April 11, 2009 at 4:26 pm

when is jerry going to make a cut is he going to do it before the game i hope it marlon

Cary K April 11, 2009 at 4:38 pm

O'Day will get cut – Buffalo is loaded with potential bullpen replacements and the Wilpons don't want to eat a contract – much as Evans should be on the team instead of Marlon – Evans will fester in Buffalo because he belongs here

and Luis 'Choppy McDoubleplay' Castillo won't be cut because he is Johan Santana's best friend and the only reason we signed him in the first place – Castillo should fake an injury and go on the 60 day DL following which we call up a 12th pitcher

the only way this team wins is if we get some production from 2B as we used to get from Valentin

bring back Nick Evans as soon as possible

AHighBlackMan April 11, 2009 at 6:50 pm

You would rather have Evans fester on the bench? In AAA, he will progress with his hitting and fielding because he will play everyday. Luis Castillo isn't going to get cut not because he is buddy buddy with anyone, it's because his contract is an albatross that you negated to point out .

hehe April 11, 2009 at 4:52 pm

popular?

jeenyus245 April 11, 2009 at 4:56 pm

i never knew he was popular either…

Rigsay April 11, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Leave Beltran in the 5 hole, he is on fire. He doesn't embrace the spotlight, so leave him be and let him enjoy the success after pitchers focus so much on Wright/Delgado

AHighBlackMan April 11, 2009 at 6:54 pm

I love seeing Murphy in the two hole with DW behind him, it's so sick. I believe David Wright will take it to the next level, imagine 3 run shots from the top three and then Delgado and Beltran coming up next, that would be a sweet inning. Once everyone on the bench gels even more, this lineup has the potential to put crooked numbers on the board. Yesterday, they had many opportunities to blow that game completely open it will be a joy to watch when timely hitting kicks in.

mjkru April 11, 2009 at 5:46 pm

I was all for Marlon being the guy, but Darren O'Day is a relief pitcher that can't throw strikes. If Anderson is that well-liked in the clubhouse then I think this team can survive with one less relief pitcher. Eventually the starters should round into form and toss more innings each time out. i think that with Reed, Tatis, Sheffield, Cora, and Anderson the bench can end up being a huge strength.

Lambay April 11, 2009 at 5:52 pm

So is the game in Florida actually happening today?

It should have started nearly an hour ago now and everything indicates that Florida is in some sort of twilight zone currently. What the hell is going on?

AHighBlackMan April 11, 2009 at 6:54 pm

I thought it was a 6pm game?

skylog April 11, 2009 at 8:03 pm

it is a 6.25 start. sny will only pick up coverage at 7.00 due to the fox blackout rules which state they have all rights to any game on saturday before 7.00 pm. the start time moved from 7 to 6 to 6.25 because the marlins changed the times due to a "flo rida" (rap artist) concert and then moved it to 6.25 to minimize the blackout time

SportsPicks365 April 11, 2009 at 8:53 pm

If "flo rida" is like all other rap artists, he won't arrive to the stadium until 12:30/1AM anyways, so why is this game being delayed?

CaseStreet April 11, 2009 at 7:24 pm

The Post reported an hour ago that the Mets designated Marlon Anderson. If he's not picked up on waivers, he can accept a spot in Buffalo or become a free agent.

Metsicles April 11, 2009 at 7:39 pm

That nice of them to give Seaver and Piazza that honor. Afterall, they probably would not otherwise have gotten close to the field, since only a select few can afford a ticket below Promenade

fxcarden April 11, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Good one.

Matt April 11, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Wrong post. this one is about Marlon Anderson

Richie Ashburn April 11, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Good to see that Gary Sheffield, a washed up steroid abusing,, out of shape bad teammate type guy costs a good guy who is also washed up but at least probably wasn't a steroid abuser a job.

CaseStreet April 11, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Well, it's really Marlon's fault for being LH and a poor defender.

Big Bird April 11, 2009 at 7:42 pm

This new format is really dumb

MetFreak April 11, 2009 at 8:07 pm

How many innings is Livan going to last tonight ?

CaseStreet April 11, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Livan will be the first in the Mets rotation to pitch 7 innings.

Matt April 11, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Why do i have a strange feeling that he'll be back before the end of the season

charlie_s April 11, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Based on the soundness of this move, I will go to tonights game.

Starney Binson April 11, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Good riddance already.

MetsFan4Decades April 11, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Thanks for the memories, Marlon. Wish you luck.

I agree with the poster above: Livan will be the first to go 7 innings tonight.

Sami A April 11, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Any pre game show on today?

mikeyrad April 11, 2009 at 8:43 pm

There are two strikes against O'Day. IMHO, three consecutive bad outings and he should be outtahere.

kmets April 11, 2009 at 9:40 pm

I agree to a point. O'day has been terrible but he lost on of his close friend former teammate in CA Angels. Not only that the whole bullpen has been terrible yesterday, and few days ago. So let us see how he does in next few outings before booting him out

SportsPicks365 April 11, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Good riddance Marlon, seriously, I hope the Phillies pick him up. A bench consisting of Miguel Cairo and Marlon Anderson would be very very beneficial to the rest of the NL East.

Bill April 11, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Better they should designate Luis Castillo for assignment. The Mets will rue the day they passed on Orlando Hudson.

methead April 11, 2009 at 9:59 pm

gimme a break. LOL

kmets April 11, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Well that is not too surprising…I hope the Mets win. today…No more unclutching hitting today by the Mets
