News: Pelfrey Has Tendonitis

April 15, 2009 at 7:43 am · 70 comments

by Jordan Zakarin

Mike Pelfrey has been pitching with forearm tendonitis, according to an on air report from ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons.

In his two starts this season, Pelfrey has a 8.10 ERA, having allowed nine runs on 13 hits in ten innings, He has surrendered three home runs, walked six and struck out five.

…i can’t decide if i’m more relieved that there is a reason for pelfrey’s poor start, or nervous that this could be a significant injury… let’s hope he can take the time to get healthy early in the season if need be, instead of letting it explode into a long term issue…

lagranderusty10 April 15, 2009 at 11:58 am

good moring my friends its time for the early a.m edition of "this day in mets infamy with rusty" so i gotta get to work so lets get this goin

b-day wishes go out to former left fielder with a million dollar bat and 2 cent brain Jeromy "dallas green's favorite met" Burnitz (1969)
Ricky "the dragon" Otero (1972)
Transactions:
New York Mets traded Mac Scarce to the Cincinnati Reds for Tom Hall on April 15, 1975. and it was scarce playing time for hall after that – ba dum dun

New York Mets signed free agent José " jose jose josejose " Oquendo on April 15, 1979. – proved to be the first coming of rey ordonez
and look out tonite mo vaughn will be putting in an appearence – he's going to challenge shefield to a sumo wrestling match !!! stay tuned

New York Mets signed free agent Alberto Castillo on April 15, 1987.

darknova April 15, 2009 at 12:37 pm

Ah, Burnitz. One of the most violent swings I've ever seen.

stick April 15, 2009 at 12:02 pm

sounds like he may need to go on the shelf for a while. Wasn't hoping certainly to have to test the depth of the rotation so early!

Give Parnell a start.

npanzeca April 15, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Man its a good thing we have Freddy Garcia in reserve, our GM is a genius

havery April 15, 2009 at 12:04 pm

At least we signed Ollie Perez so we have consistent starters to fall back on that we all have confidence in.

MetsFan4Decades April 15, 2009 at 12:10 pm

I'm with Jordan on this. Tendonitis can be a nagging problem. Sometimes it can signify the start of arthritis. Here's hoping that's not the problem. Depending on the severity though, this can take weeks to heal. Crap….didn't take long for the first injury.

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:50 pm

yea that sux..but at least it happened early in the season and not down the stretch….
Give him some rest and i guess satisfy the niese fanclub and call him up as he has options and can go down once redding gets back.

its only 7 games April 15, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Please we are not going any where with this team lets be honest here .The reason why so many Met fans are down on this team already is because its pretty much the same team frm last yr and 07 and they playing this way since last yr so yeah its only been a few games but this been going on since last August

Danny April 15, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Billy Wagner started out with forearm tendinitis before it became TJ.

Richie Ashburn April 15, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Zakarin is releived that the guy has an injury!! This is truly a strange post.

stick April 15, 2009 at 12:30 pm

poorly worded maybe, but the logic of at least knowing there is a problem (as opposed to him just sucking) makes some sort of sense.

NYMETSFAN718 April 15, 2009 at 12:36 pm

I would much rather it be sucking, than it be injury

Richie Ashburn April 15, 2009 at 1:01 pm

When a guy has talent, sucking is quickly fixable, an in jury is not….

NYMETSFAN718 April 15, 2009 at 12:31 pm

Agreed. How can anyone be relieved that a poor start is due to an injury. Im sure every Met fan would prefer it being a slow start. If this guy misses some time, it will be huge.

Nails April 15, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Welcome to Citifield Mr. Niese and Mr. Gee!

Glen April 15, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Agreed

Razor Shines April 15, 2009 at 12:32 pm

John Patterson, Tim Hudson, Billy Wagner — all had forearm tendonitis before realizing it was an elbow issue (or the forearm injury created strain and injury to elbow later). I'm sure there are also plenty of forearm strains that turned out fine. Here's the thing: while forearm tendonitis or elbow strains don't always lead to TJS (see: Johan this spring), the pitchers that wind up getting TJS almost always started off with some kind of similar injury. So he may be fine, but this is the first sign of a serious problem.

I would pay Pedro $3mil if Pelf has a serious injury and keep Niese in AAA.

Mister Koo April 15, 2009 at 12:37 pm

So would I

charlie_s April 15, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Johan's issue was simple soreness in his triceps tendon, which is leagues different than forearm tendinitis.

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:47 pm

only problem is pedro wants 5mil guarenteed

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:48 pm

only problem is pedro wants 5mil guarenteed and could possibly end up sitting right next to pelf on the DL after his first start….

Richie Ashburn April 15, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Why do you care? Is it your money? Why don't you want your team getting the best they can get? Better yet, why don't you become a Pirate fan so you can live in the luxury of cheap talent.

meet the mets April 15, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Yikes. Someone a little cranky this morning?

npanzeca April 15, 2009 at 12:33 pm

Mr Niese currently has a 9.00 ERA in AAA after 2 starts, hes not ready at all.

Mister Koo April 15, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Unrelated, but Lastings Milledge was demoted to the minor leagues. He was hitting .167 with 10 strikeouts.

npanzeca April 15, 2009 at 12:40 pm

I also heard he showed up to their home opener 30 minutes before game time, can't remember where I heard this.

NYMETSFAN718 April 15, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Yeh, the guy is overrated. Yeh we sold low on him but bringing in Church for him was well worth it.

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:47 pm

wow…..thrilledge not looking too good there.

Xavier22 April 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Funny, I was reading reports earlier how Manny Acta was impressed with Milledge's improved defensive skills. I guess they came at the cost of his bat.

Talk about a kid who can't get out of his own way.

darknova April 15, 2009 at 12:39 pm

I'd be up for giving a start to Gee or Parnell. I really don't want to see Niese in the majors until the middle of the season at the earliest.

Man, this is just another in a string of disappointments to start the season.

Richie Ashburn April 15, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Talk about injuring a kid. You have had Parnell pitch no more than 2 innings from Day 1 of spring training and you advocate starting him!!!! Why do you want him injured?

charlie_s April 15, 2009 at 12:40 pm

somewhere tom verducci is smiling…

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:42 pm

LMAOOOO!!!!
good post!!

charlie_s April 15, 2009 at 12:49 pm

thanks…so, is this nothing or something?

AP1 April 15, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Oh well, Is anyone still confident about this team's chances this year. The rotation was razor thin as it was. I guess we will be buying starting pitching come the trade deadline. So long Fernando Martinez.

npanzeca April 15, 2009 at 12:42 pm

By the trade deadlne he'll be on the DL so I doubt he'll be an option.

darknova April 15, 2009 at 12:44 pm

If we can get a top flight starter for a package centered on FMart, I'm up for it. He has never shown any ability to stay healthy.

pcmetsfan07 April 15, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Definitely think it's time to sign Pedro if Pelfrey is injured…that would be quite the story if he came in here, pitched well and made the crowd at Citi field go nuts

NYMETSFAN718 April 15, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Where is Figgy, is he in the minors? he can get a call up. Hes not that bad of an option for a start or two

Mister Koo April 15, 2009 at 12:46 pm

But only if it is for one start. If we have to rely on him for more than that, then we're asking for trouble.

NYMETSFAN718 April 15, 2009 at 12:49 pm

I agree. for a start or two he owuld not be a bad option. So far Santana's been great. Livan and his one start was prettty good. Maine was pretty good.

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:54 pm

i forgot about figgy….he may get the call.

Agees_Catch April 15, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Sign Pedro and bring up Neise.
Not a knee jerk reaction, but I'd rather shut Pelfrey down now and deal with the injury than send him out there at a disadvantage.
Pedro pitched very well in the WBC. Why not have him ready for May 15th? I'm pretty sure about Santana, Livan & Ollie being able to make their 34 starts, but Maine & Pelfrey require some insurance.

npanzeca April 15, 2009 at 12:57 pm

I doubt we are giving Pedro 5 mil

mrose1120 April 15, 2009 at 1:00 pm

he pitched against the netherlands

ravi3 April 15, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Normally this wouldn't concern me, but wasn't Wagner initially diagnosed with forearm tendonitis?

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:46 pm

I wonder how far along tim redding is at the moment??
Anyone know how garcia/niese are doing in the minors…

darknova April 15, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Niese is getting shelled. Other than him, I'm not sure.

npanzeca April 15, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Niese pitched yesterday and currently has a 9.00 ERA in 2 games.

OssMetsFan April 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm

not good at all, i guess he's not ready for the bigs at this point.

Sign Pedro!!!!

Cerrones_Ego April 15, 2009 at 12:48 pm

What next? With an injury like that, how long is the recovery time? This is not good, whatsoever!

darknova April 15, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Probably a trip to the 15 day DL followed by prayers that it's not going to lead to a more serious injury requiring the knife.

fxcarden April 15, 2009 at 12:54 pm

We're dead.

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:57 pm

because we never survived an injury to a starting pitcher before…CMON
need i remind you of pedro martinez….

TheDirtySanchez April 15, 2009 at 12:55 pm

its a nothing that can lead into a something lol

Cerrones_Ego April 15, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Damn…and your heart definitely goes out to Pelfrey. He has work so hard to get to this point. Hopefully, the time off recuperating will allow him to heal and grasp his velocity and mechanics.

darknova April 15, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Absolutely. He seems like a real good guy and a really hard worker. He finally gets himself into the rotation and this happens. I hope he gets through it and comes back really strong. Reducing his innings now might actually be good, cause we can keep him strong to be a nice 1-2 punch with Johan in October. :) Gotta keep the wishful thinking alive.

donhahn April 15, 2009 at 1:02 pm

This is all Tom Verducci's fault.

Cerrones_Ego April 15, 2009 at 1:15 pm

I'm sorry…but how is this Verducci's fault?

modernkicks April 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Nudge.

Wink.

modernkicks April 15, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I was going to post this.

Damn that guy.

Cerrones_Ego April 15, 2009 at 1:03 pm

I agree Dirty. It's not like the Mets did not have a Pedro Martinez, or to a lessor extent Moises Alou (non-pitcher). Let's just hope the pitcher asked to replace Pelf will do a solid job. By the way, how's Redding?

hjhjhjhjhj April 15, 2009 at 1:06 pm

just wondering, why do you put effort into this team (ie post on their blog) if you are so down on them? I m trying to understand fans like you ( and their is a whole lot you here) that just give up so early in the season….please explain if you want or even can….just seems like something that should be fun (rooting on your team in whatever sport) is a miserable experience for you….other people please respond as well….

darknova April 15, 2009 at 1:07 pm

Guess that's a good point. How about slot Gee into the rotation and start having Parnell condition himself for a return to starting. Give him extra work during games, too. I just don't like any of the other options right now: Figgy, Niese, Garcia, Knight, etc.

Theresa April 15, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Damn you Tom Verducci!

Cerrones_Ego April 15, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Agreed Darknova. We have to stay positive not only for the team but for Big Pelf. :-)

OssMetsFan April 15, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Hopefully he can bounce back from this quickly but at least we do have some options in Figgy/Niese/Garcia for a few starts at least.

This could be serious, but Pelf is young and tough, he should bounce back from this fairly soon.

SetonHall2007 April 15, 2009 at 1:23 pm

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Pedro Martinez landing in Laguardia.

Richie Ashburn April 15, 2009 at 1:23 pm

There real question is why was this franchise allowing to him to pirch with this?
