by Matthew Cerrone on April 15th, 2009 at 11:40 am

Ron Darling has published a new book, The Complete Game.

To purchase the book, and learn more about it, go here.

…as i have said before, i’ve read it, and the book is impressive, inspiring and educational…

…basically, darling breaks the book up in to 10 chapters, one inning each, plus an extra inning, that each detail one specific game from his career…

In St. Lucie, I spent time talking with Darling about some of the stories he writes of in the book.

To watch the four-minute video from our disucssion, during which he teaches me how to throw the curve ball, and explains why he was suddenly forced to stop throwing the pitch in 1987, click play below:

Read: Today in the NL East

by Joe Hamrahi on April 15th, 2009 at 11:18 am

marlins-hatThe Florida Marlins ran their record to 6-1 last night by defeating the Braves, 5-1. Chris Volstad tossed 3-hit ball over 7 innings, and Dan Uggla led the offense with 2 hits and 3 RBI.

The two teams resume their series today with Florida sending Andrew Miller to the hill to oppose Derek Lowe.

Word out of Atlanta is that Tom Glavine has a strained rotator cuff and will be out of action for at least 2 weeks. Glavine reportedly will consider retirement should he require extensive rehab.

The Phillies and Nationals were off yesterday, but they’ll pick up their series again this evening in Washington when Joe Blanton matches up against Shairon Martis.

In case you missed the news yesterday, the Nationals sent former Met Lastings Milledge to Triple-A Syracuse to try to work out his deficiencies at the plate and in the field. According to acting GM Mike Rizzo, character issues had nothing to do with Milledge being sent down.

…With all the outfielders acquired by Jim Bowden over the past few years, it will be interesting to see how this plays out for Milledge.

Links: Bell, Reyes, Graphics, Stop, Drop & Roll

by Matthew Cerrone on April 15th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Jose Reyes is inspired by Jackie Robinson, according to the New York Times, and intends to steal home at least once in his career.

Steve Sidoti of Seven Train to Shea posts a quick conversation he had from the stands of Citi Field with Padres closer Heath Bell.

this is interesting, i wonder if sidoti identified himself as a blogger, and if bell knew his comments would be put on a blog… i suppose at this point, in this day and age, every person, whether me, you or a professional athlete, should just assume every word from our mouths is on record anyway

Pepper Duncan of Fan Fury created a Stop, Drop and Roll public service announcement using Mike Pelfrey’s slip on the mound from Monday.

In a post to his blog for the Star-Ledger, Brian Costa takes a loot at the state of the Mets after seven regular-season games.

Lastly, Andrew Vazzano of the ‘Ropolitans questions SNY’s decision to use such a large scoreboard graphic on air.

…i mentioned this the other day, as well… i like the look of it, the actual design is cool, but it is pretty large, and low and it does intrude a bit in to the game

News: Minaya and Mets have money to Spend

by Matthew Cerrone on April 15th, 2009 at 9:06 am

Yesterday, Omar Minaya told the New York Post that ‘he has permission from ownership to increase payroll,’ which the Post also confirmed with Jeff Wilpon.

“We’ve been told that whatever we need to do to get to help us win, we’re going to try to do it,” Minaya is quoted as saying.

Minaya also noted that while the number is limited, he has the ability to increase payroll with a mid-season acquisition if it is in an area on the roster that needs improvement.

Yesterday, Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors listed starting pitchers Jake Peavy, Roy Halladay and Erik Bedard, outfielders Matt Holliday and Vernon Wells and second baseman Dan Uggla among 14 players who could be available at the July 31 trade deadline.

News: Pelfrey Has Tendonitis

by Jordan Zakarin on April 15th, 2009 at 7:43 am

Mike Pelfrey has been pitching with forearm tendonitis, according to an on air report from ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons.

In his two starts this season, Pelfrey has a 8.10 ERA, having allowed nine runs on 13 hits in ten innings, He has surrendered three home runs, walked six and struck out five.

…i can’t decide if i’m more relieved that there is a reason for pelfrey’s poor start, or nervous that this could be a significant injury… let’s hope he can take the time to get healthy early in the season if need be, instead of letting it explode into a long term issue…

News: Sheffield should play Tonight

by Matthew Cerrone on April 15th, 2009 at 6:39 am

Prior to Monday’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters he plans to use Gary Sheffield in right field tonight against the Padres.

sure, because, when your outfield has made two costly errors in each of the last two games, sheffield is clearly the answer… yes, that was sarcasm…

Sheffield, as quoted by the Daily News, said:

“I’ll be ready.  I’m looking forward to it.  It’s been a long time since I’ve been out there… I’ve played in the outfield before, it ain’t like it’s something (new), so I’ll be fine… I’m looking forward to it.”

Sheffield said on Monday that he talked with Ryan Church, and told him, ‘Don’t worry about me,’ saying Church should simply play his game, and know that Sheffield is there should Church ever need a ‘breather,’ since he’s only a pinch hitter, ‘and that’s it.’
