The Mets put Brian Schneider on the 15–day disabled list today with a muscle strain in his back.
C Omir Santos has been promoted from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Schneider on the roster, he’ll wear No. 9 and be available for tonight’s game against the Brewers.
The Mets (5–4) defeated the Brewers, 5–4, in Citi Field tonight.

The least you should know…
- Livan Hernandez looked good early, but lost steam late, let up one run in the fifth, then let up three runs in the sixth on a home run from Ryan Bruan.
- Pedro Feliciano, Sean Green, Bobby Parnell and J.J. Putz each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
- Gary Sheffield tied the game with his first home run of the season, and the 500th of his career.
- Carlos Delgado hit a double to start the ninth inning, with the game tied, he advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, then scored the winning run on a walk-off, infield single hit deep to the right of the shortstop by Luis Castillo.
The Game Ball…
- Tonight’s Game Ball goes to Gary Sheffield, according to those who responded to my Twitter Feed.
Random Thoughts…
- I love how the entire Mets bench came out to greet Sheffield, crossing home plate, for the 500th of his career – and the Shea, I mean, Citi Faithful called for a curtain call.
- Castillo’s walk-off hit reminded me of the final moments of the 80–pitch hitting drill in spring training, with Razor Shines yelling, “Come on, Luis, winning hit now.”
- David Wright turned a key double play in the top of the third, which avoided a potentially bad situation for Hernandez.
- The Mets won, but, again, they wasted an early 3–0 lead, which is becoming a worrisome trend.
The Quote…
- Jerry Manuel: We left too many on base tonight be swaggering about anything. If we were clicking, so to speak, the game wouldn’t have been that close.”
The Mets and Johan Santana continue their series against Yovani Gallardo and the Brewers tomorrow at 1 pm in Citi Field.
Tonight, at 11 pm, SNY.tv’s post game call-in show, The Happy Recast, aired and featured an interview with SNY’s Ted Berg.

The Mets (4-5, 1-2 Home) begin a three-game series versus the Brewers (3-6, 1-2 Road) tonight at Citi Field, starting at 7:10 p.m. EDT.
On the Mound:
- RHP Livan Hernandez (1-0, 2.70 ERA) will start for the Mets. In his last start on April 11 versus the Marlins, Hernandez picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits, while walk three and striking out four over 6.2 IP. He is 7-6 with a 3.77 ERA in 19 career starts versus the Brewers.
- RHP Dave Bush (0-0, 6.14 ERA) will pitch for the Brewers. Bush earned a no-decision in his last start on April 11 versus the Cubs, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, while five over 6.1 IP. He is 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three games, two starts, in his career versus the Mets.
At the Plate:
- Jose Reyes, SS
- Daniel Murphy, LF
- David Wright, 3B
- Carlos Delgado, 1B
- Carlos Beltran, CF
- Ryan Church, RF
- Ramon Castro, C
- Luis Castillo, 2B
- Livan Hernandez, P
Random Thoughts:
- As I said earlier today, my belief is Livan is the Mets second best pitcher and I expect him to pitch like it tonight.
- I can’t imagine the verbal assault Willie Randolph will get tonight as he makes his first return to New York since being fired by the team last season.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets plan to scratch Mike Pelfrey from his next scheduled start on Sunday versus the Brewers.
However, Jerry Manuel, speaking to reporters prior to today’s game, said he has not made a decision and will not until the end of the day at the earliest.
Heyman indicates Nelson Figueroa is candidate to replace Pelfrey.

- Six. The combined run differential in the Mets five losses this season.
- David Wright has struck out 13 times in his first 35 at-bats and is on pace for 234 strikeouts this season. He has struck out 512 times in his six-year career.
- Marlins starters have allowed two runs or less in six of the team’s first nine games. In their first 54.1 IP Marlins starters have a 2.98 ERA.
- The Mets have been outscored by their opponents 21-to-10 in the first three innings this season, but are outscoring their opponents 37-to-20 in the last six innings.
- In his five appearances this season, Francisco Rodriguez has pitched three times in non-save situations. He pitched in six non-save situations in 76 games for the Angels last season.
Five Thoughts:
- With the uncertainty of the Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and Oliver Perez, Livan Hernandez is clearly the Mets second best starter.
- The lack of Mets “stuff” in Citi Field does not bother me. I go to the ballpark to let the game create my own memories, not a history lesson. If you care about your team, you know their history.
- I don’t know why, but every time I see Sean Green pitch I get Aaron Heilman flashbacks.
- I’m still confused why the Mets inaugural Citi Field patch differs on their hat and jersey.
- The Marlins will be a much bigger matchup problem for the Mets this season than the Phillies will.
Yesterday, before the game, while waiting to interview Omar Minaya, I spent time in the dugout taking pictures and filming video.
Here are some random photographs of things you do not usually see during a game (scroll over image for a description, click for larger version):

The following is a quick video tour of the dugout, which will give a sense of what it’s like in the hour or so before the game begins:
The Washington Nationals picked up their first victory of the season last night by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-2. Washington’s offense was powered by home runs from Adam Dunn, Josh Willingham, Alex Gonzalez, and Elijah Dukes.
Tha Nationals continue their homestand tonight against the Marlins while the Phillies return to CBP to take on the Padres.
In Atlanta, the Marlins completed a 3-game sweep of the Braves to run their record to a league best 8-1. Cody Ross propelled Florida to victory with a 3-for-3 night that included a 3-run home run and 4 RBI.
The first place Marlins go north to face Washington this evening, and Atlanta travels to Pittsburgh for a 3-game weekend series.
In player news… Atlanta’s SS Yunel Escobar had to leave yesterday’s game with a strained abdominal muscle. Escobar injured himself while jumping up and down in the on-deck circle.
The Braves expect Escobar to miss 3-4 games.
Nationals manager Manny Acta inserted Nick Johnson into the second slot in the lineup on Thursday, and all Johnson did was go 3-for-4 with a walk.
Acta plans on keeping Johnson in the #2 spot for the foreseeable future to help jump-start the offense.
