Post-Game: Mets 1 Brewers 0

by Matthew Cerrone on April 18th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

The Mets (6–5) defeated the Brewers, 1 to 0, in Citi Field.

For a full recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.

The least you should know

  • Johan Santana pitched seven scoreless innings.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Omir Santos, pinch running for Ramon Castro, scored from third on a fielder’s choice, which initially ricocheted off the pitcher’s glove, for the game’s only run.
  • J.J. Putz pitched in relief on Santana, and Frankie Rodriguez closed out the game in the ninth for his third save.

Other Thoughts

  • ‘Santana to Putz to K-Rod,’ is fun to say.
  • Luis Castillo was 2 for 4, extended his hitting streak to seven games, while batting behind Jose Reyes, and is now batting .400.
  • Jim Thome, Doc Gooden and Ken Griffey Jr., among others, congratulated Gary Sheffield on his 500th career home run with video messages that ran throughout the day on Citi Vision.
  • The Mets left 17 runners on base.  The trend continues.
  • The game ended on a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play, which I don’t think I’ve seen before.
  • Carlos Beltran tried to steal third, Ryan Church lined out to left field, and Beltran was doubled up at second, and he did not look happy about it.  I’m guessing Church was supposed to be taking, or at least hitting the other way for a h it and run.
  • The Brewers never had a runner in scoring position.

The Game Ball

  • Today’s Game Ball obviously goes to Santana.

Nelson Figueroa will start for the Mets on Sunday, in the final game of a three-game series with the Brewers.

News: Figueroa to Start in Place of Pelfrey

by Matthew Cerrone on April 18th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

The Mets announced today that Mike Pelfrey will miss his start tomorrow against the Brewers, while dealing with forearm tendinitis

Nelson Figueroa will be promoted from Triple-A to pitch in place of Pelfrey.

To make room for Figueroa, the Mets put reliever Darren O’Day on Rule 5 Waivers, meaning he must first be offered back to the Angels.
