News: Figueroa to Start in Place of Pelfrey

By Matthew Cerrone on Apr 18, 2009, 8:11 pm

The Mets announced today that Mike Pelfrey will miss his start tomorrow against the Brewers, while dealing with forearm tendinitis

Nelson Figueroa will be promoted from Triple-A to pitch in place of Pelfrey.

To make room for Figueroa, the Mets put reliever Darren O’Day on Rule 5 Waivers, meaning he must first be offered back to the Angels.

this is stupid, why don't they just send down stokes?

      Or just DL Pelfrey?

        Apr 19, 2009, 12:25 am at 12:25 am #

i believe DL'ing Pelf means him missing 2 starts, which is unnecessary, which is good news concerning the severity of the injury.

      Apr 19, 2009, 12:23 am at 12:23 am #

stokes has options remaining? O'day is the last guy in the pen, and this pen could probably use a long guy, so keeping Figgy up after this spot start is smart all around. I have absolutely no problem with this move.

      Apr 19, 2009, 12:33 am at 12:33 am #

Stokes doesn't have any options. Once Redding comes back, O'Day was gone anyway. I'm pretty sure the only guy with options in the pen is Parnell and I don't think anyone wants him to get sent down

    • PedroMANIA
      Apr 19, 2009, 3:24 am at 3:24 am #

Because Stokes is better than O'Day and he doesn't have any options. Hey DaveC, you probably should get the facts straight before ripping a move. O'Day is nothing special and was gone once Redding gets back.

im sure one of these guys has a 2-way contract

two way contracts only matter in spring training. Once a player (who is out of options) is added to the 25 man roster they have to pass through waivers to be sent to the minors. Stokes, Figueroa, and I believe Omir Santos all fall into this catagory.

I like Figgy alot, watch the swings people take against him, alot of the time people are very off balance. I think he should have some sort of role with this club. He is a very smart pitcher.

Figgy is a fill in and long man. Nothing more. He'll do a decent job but don't look for long term contributions from him this season

Figueroa isn't really impressive to me, he throws 5 different pitches but none of them are +. On the other hand, he had a good WBC and ST I just don't really get excited to see this guy on the mound, I hope he does very well.

i like darren o'day's stuff though, and while it would be nice to keep figueroa around, it'd be even nicer to have another lefty i am sick of seeing feliciano, he IS getting the job done but what's going to happen come august or september, i'd like another lefty for howard, utley, berkman, and any other clobbering lefty hitters

I hear ya… I thought O'Day was there guy… so to say, but you never with Omar or Jerry! That's something this team lacks out of that bullpen (besides another lefty.) Is a long man. Nelson showed a lot of guts last year (spot starts, long man, mop up, etc.). Maybe it's me, but I met the guy last year in spring training and the guy couldn't be nicer. I think your right but I hope the guy fills the void. Hopefully this team could have Feliciano pitch 140 games, haha.

Yeah O'Day is great, I can't beleive we cut him! Seriously though, O'Day is pulling a Mike Stanton of a several years ago (good ERA, lets every inherited runner to score). The Pen's ERA would be even better w/o O'day so far.

Im not sure why people keep saying O'Day is a long man.. you'll be lucky for O'Day to give you 2 innings. The longman is Stokes.. Im not sure what role Figueroa is going to play though (I guess our 2nd long man? Hopefully he can be another effective crossover guy that can pitch a much needed inning or 2 when Stokes isn't available or if Stokes sucks)

If they can't start getting more than 5 IP from the starters on a regular basis they are going to need someone like Figueroa or Redding in the pen. The Mets play 20 straight days in early may, they cannot get through that stretch with 7 short relievers and starters only going 5-6 IP most of the time.

      • meetthemets86
        Apr 19, 2009, 3:50 am at 3:50 am #

Yes I think this is right. We don't have a long reliever, and we really need one. Our short relievers are so good that we don't need O'Day, but we could get a lot of use from Figueroa to pick up 3 innings every so often when a starter only goes 4 or less.

Seeing that the Brewers have a right-handed-heavy lineup, it's probably best if the Mets didn't bring up Jon Niese, who I was hoping for, but who got rocked by the Brewers in his first MLB start last year. Figgy's fastball probably moves a tad more than Freddy Garcia's laser beams in the mid 80s. Figgy could also probably give the big club 6 to 7 innings of 2 to 3 runs scored against. Enough to get to Sean Green in the 7th, Putz in the 8th, and K-Rod in the 9th.

Who thinks the Mets will resign Delgado? I hope they do and he finishes his carrer with the Mets as well as Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Santana. Also, the Mets are going to win tomorrow. The Nationals are terrible now and the Marlins are just lucky. The Mets should be in 1st place by the end of April or beginning of May. These are the final standindg of the year. Who agree's with me?

    Mets
    Marlins WC
    Phillies
    Braves
    Nationals

Actually, I agree. I completely underestimated FLA (and I know its, what 11 games?)….. But they have some serious talent. The Phillies were never that good, but I think they get 3rd. And ATL takes 4th, though I think any games that Jordan Zimmermann will be pretty competitive for WAS. (NL ROY?)

    • sincekindergart
      Apr 19, 2009, 9:53 am at 9:53 am #

I think that the Mets have more to fear from the Braves than they do the Phillthies. The Marlins will eventually let up–I'm just not sure when. Even though the Nats got out to a brutal start, I fully expect them to screw things up for someone in that division. Hey–Brad Lidge blew a save last night! So, I'd switch the Marlins and Braves in your list.

What I understand from listen to the Fan is that Pelfrey didn't want to miss two start or wants to be put in a 15 day DL. In addition, O'day was sorta reckless but then again I think Adenhart's death impacted him. I know that he is a professional but like he is like us and he struggled. I hope this move doesn't affect us in the end.

O'Day brings a different arm angle but hes basically 1 dimensional (should only be used vs righties, and will struggle if hes going to pitch more than an inning).. Figueroa might not have a plus pitch but he has a bunch of pitches he can throw at you, and should have more success pitching an inning or 2 opposed to O'Day… as well as the fact he can pitch to both lefties/righties

O'Day would have been nice to retain, but the Mets have a number of relievers capable of equaling what O'Day can do. Muniz, Robertson, and even Nieve won't be much different if they need to be called up to be the last man in the pen for a while.

Its is a shame the Mets couldnt hold onto O'Day until the Angels got thier injured pitchers back, but even then they likely would take him back and send him to the minors. Maybe the Mets can open up some conversation regarding trading for Juan Rivera and O'Day later in the year or in the offseason.

  41. Nate W.
    Apr 19, 2009, 4:07 am at 4:07 am #

I will hold my opinion on Delgado until Sept, as should Omar…
regarding Sunday, I will be happy if Figueroa keeps them in the game.
The Mets early schedule is not favorable and I think it will be very tough to catch the Marlins that quickly. It might not be until after the All Star break, but that is fine. Look at the May schedule, if the Mets get to June 1st more than a couple games over .500 it will be a nice result.
Actually the Marlins worry me. Last year no one through the Rays would hang onto 1st, eventually they had to lose it right? Well the Marlins have even better pitching, and will expand thier payroll to bring in some relievers. They are better than a 3rd or 4th place team. Someone needs to get them some losses before they get too much confidence.

    Apr 19, 2009, 5:04 am at 5:04 am #

Figeuroa pitched a very good game against Milwaukee last year and he certainly knows what he's doing and will give us a chance to win. didn't really want to lose O'Day, but he was an extra part anyway.

  43. Tom
    Apr 19, 2009, 5:29 am at 5:29 am #

This is a good choice. I know some may criticize, if he doesn't pitch well tomorrow, but I feel more comfortable relying on him for 5 or 6 IP, with like 3 ER, than I do with Niese or Gee. What we need is the chance to win every game and we should give ourselves that best chance every game. That means there shouldn't be much experimenting, unless we know for certain it's the right choice.

  44. Tom
    Apr 19, 2009, 5:30 am at 5:30 am #

Even though O'Day hadn't technically given up an earned run yet, that game winning hit in the first week of the season, with 2 out and runner on 1st, was probably worst than that. He was obviously the weakest link in the bullpen. I'd like to retain him, but if not, I'd be happy to see Elmer Dessens, Ken Takahashi or Nelson Figueroa get a chance in the bullpen.

bad idea to release a piece of the team to simply miss one start. should have dl'd Pelfrey or moved a guy with options like Parnell temporarily. With Krod, Green and Putz all pitching well, we certainly could have gone with them and one less option for the 7th inning
