The Mets announced today that Mike Pelfrey will miss his start tomorrow against the Brewers, while dealing with forearm tendinitis
Nelson Figueroa will be promoted from Triple-A to pitch in place of Pelfrey.
To make room for Figueroa, the Mets put reliever Darren O’Day on Rule 5 Waivers, meaning he must first be offered back to the Angels.

Angels, not D-Backs.
this is stupid, why don't they just send down stokes?
Or just DL Pelfrey?
i believe DL'ing Pelf means him missing 2 starts, which is unnecessary, which is good news concerning the severity of the injury.
stokes has options remaining? O'day is the last guy in the pen, and this pen could probably use a long guy, so keeping Figgy up after this spot start is smart all around. I have absolutely no problem with this move.
Stokes doesn't have any options. Once Redding comes back, O'Day was gone anyway. I'm pretty sure the only guy with options in the pen is Parnell and I don't think anyone wants him to get sent down
Because Stokes is better than O'Day and he doesn't have any options. Hey DaveC, you probably should get the facts straight before ripping a move. O'Day is nothing special and was gone once Redding gets back.
im sure one of these guys has a 2-way contract
two way contracts only matter in spring training. Once a player (who is out of options) is added to the 25 man roster they have to pass through waivers to be sent to the minors. Stokes, Figueroa, and I believe Omir Santos all fall into this catagory.
Nice to see the "official Mets blog of SNY" is on top of things.
ANGELS, not D'Backs.
yeah one other time it was posted he had to be returned to the "dodgers"
I thought they got him from the Angels?
Matt,
I'm not pleased to ever agree with Furioso, but it is the Angels, not the D-backs.
I like Figgy alot, watch the swings people take against him, alot of the time people are very off balance. I think he should have some sort of role with this club. He is a very smart pitcher.
Figgy is a fill in and long man. Nothing more. He'll do a decent job but don't look for long term contributions from him this season
Figueroa isn't really impressive to me, he throws 5 different pitches but none of them are +. On the other hand, he had a good WBC and ST I just don't really get excited to see this guy on the mound, I hope he does very well.
wasnt he an angel?
i like darren o'day's stuff though, and while it would be nice to keep figueroa around, it'd be even nicer to have another lefty i am sick of seeing feliciano, he IS getting the job done but what's going to happen come august or september, i'd like another lefty for howard, utley, berkman, and any other clobbering lefty hitters
there is ken takahashi in AAA, hes been great so far for Buffalo.
I hear ya… I thought O'Day was there guy… so to say, but you never with Omar or Jerry! That's something this team lacks out of that bullpen (besides another lefty.) Is a long man. Nelson showed a lot of guts last year (spot starts, long man, mop up, etc.). Maybe it's me, but I met the guy last year in spring training and the guy couldn't be nicer. I think your right but I hope the guy fills the void. Hopefully this team could have Feliciano pitch 140 games, haha.
and btw best bullpen stats in the majors, if it aint broken don't tweak it
You know this is Darren O'Day… not Sean Green.. (my point is, O'Day really isn't that important, and he hasn't looked that good since being on the mound this season)
Yeah O'Day is great, I can't beleive we cut him! Seriously though, O'Day is pulling a Mike Stanton of a several years ago (good ERA, lets every inherited runner to score). The Pen's ERA would be even better w/o O'day so far.
I like Nelson… I think he'll be a better long man than O'Day.
Im not sure why people keep saying O'Day is a long man.. you'll be lucky for O'Day to give you 2 innings. The longman is Stokes.. Im not sure what role Figueroa is going to play though (I guess our 2nd long man? Hopefully he can be another effective crossover guy that can pitch a much needed inning or 2 when Stokes isn't available or if Stokes sucks)
this is the best site for accurate and timely information!
and tom mc carthy's voice makes me want to vomit, what a jerk guy…i remember listening to him on wfan in 2006 during the playoffs leaving shea doing the recaps in the car
I think O'Day has some potential. The Angels would be smart to bring him back.
Figgy did really well against the Brewers last year. Check out his splits against them:
this would be good if we play the brewers every day, however we won't see them again until the last week of june…
Except that we will see them again tomorrow which is when we need the starter for.
yup
and hopefully by then the rotation will be doing well, until then, we need someone for Sunday's game. isn't it a good thing that the guy we're calling up for Sunday's game has a good record against the Brewers?
Much rather have O'Day in the pen over Figgy. I like Figgy, but his stuff is avg.
Mets have entered second place.
Agreed, but O'day is nothing special… he's be gone by the time Redding comes back anyway.
If they can't start getting more than 5 IP from the starters on a regular basis they are going to need someone like Figueroa or Redding in the pen. The Mets play 20 straight days in early may, they cannot get through that stretch with 7 short relievers and starters only going 5-6 IP most of the time.
Yes I think this is right. We don't have a long reliever, and we really need one. Our short relievers are so good that we don't need O'Day, but we could get a lot of use from Figueroa to pick up 3 innings every so often when a starter only goes 4 or less.
comeon – this site is great but i tell you since Matt teamed up with SNY it has gone to shit – everyone reported the figgy thing hours ago – Mat tthis is your site care about it
i hear that getting paid changes everything
rule 5 waivers i thought he was dfa'd
I guess the Mets are content to take 2 out of 3. No sense promoting anyone who might actually have a chance to win. This is vintage Omar.
Who did you think they should bring up?
He'll keep the spot warm for Redding once he comes off the DL
Seeing that the Brewers have a right-handed-heavy lineup, it's probably best if the Mets didn't bring up Jon Niese, who I was hoping for, but who got rocked by the Brewers in his first MLB start last year. Figgy's fastball probably moves a tad more than Freddy Garcia's laser beams in the mid 80s. Figgy could also probably give the big club 6 to 7 innings of 2 to 3 runs scored against. Enough to get to Sean Green in the 7th, Putz in the 8th, and K-Rod in the 9th.
how easy is it to know O'Day is from the Angels?? Seriously, everyone is talking about his relationship with Adenhart too. I don't understand how someone doesn't take more pride in their JOB to proofread and fact check, heck, i'm Embarrassed for Cerrone on this one especially.
come on dude, we all love this blog, but put some better effort in!
Watching the phils game right now. What a joke of a ballpark!! Everything just flies out of there. Utley basically popped a ball up to the right fielder and it ends up in the stands. I'm startin to have a little more respect for our ballpark and hitters!!
Who thinks the Mets will resign Delgado? I hope they do and he finishes his carrer with the Mets as well as Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Santana. Also, the Mets are going to win tomorrow. The Nationals are terrible now and the Marlins are just lucky. The Mets should be in 1st place by the end of April or beginning of May. These are the final standindg of the year. Who agree's with me?
Mets
Marlins WC
Phillies
Braves
Nationals
That's just honesty.
I agree for the most part. I just dont think the marlins are gonna keep it up, i think there playing way over there heads. I'll give the philthies the wild card.
Actually, I agree. I completely underestimated FLA (and I know its, what 11 games?)….. But they have some serious talent. The Phillies were never that good, but I think they get 3rd. And ATL takes 4th, though I think any games that Jordan Zimmermann will be pretty competitive for WAS. (NL ROY?)
I think that the Mets have more to fear from the Braves than they do the Phillthies. The Marlins will eventually let up–I'm just not sure when. Even though the Nats got out to a brutal start, I fully expect them to screw things up for someone in that division. Hey–Brad Lidge blew a save last night! So, I'd switch the Marlins and Braves in your list.
why didnt they put pelfrey on the 15 day disabled list ? Darren Oday has potential . I hope this doesnt backfire on uslike so many others who left for greener pastures.
What I understand from listen to the Fan is that Pelfrey didn't want to miss two start or wants to be put in a 15 day DL. In addition, O'day was sorta reckless but then again I think Adenhart's death impacted him. I know that he is a professional but like he is like us and he struggled. I hope this move doesn't affect us in the end.

O'Day sucks. He may have a 0.00 ERA but he has come into games with 3 guys on base and all 3 guys have scored. That is 100% of inherited runners scoring. That is garbage for a relief pitcher. I don't know if Figs is the answer but O'Day is not.
My guess is that Mets brass is not impressed with O'day. Except the last inning he threw he looked awful. He probably would be the one cut anyway when Redding gets back. Who knows, they can still work out a trade to keep O'day here if they want him that bad.
Lidge is no longer perfect.
I'll drink to that….
Mets blown saves: 0
Phillies blown saves: 1
I hope all the people who freaked out that the Mets had trouble with the Padres are watching them destroy Lidge and the Phils this weekend.
Just saw that too. That didn't take long this season, did it?
The Phillies have some series pitching problems…..
hahahahahahaha BRAD LIDGE JUST ROCKED BY THE FRIARS IN THE 9TH!
Yes!!!!
Phillies have blown a save….. PUT IT ON THE BOOOOARD… YESS!
May they continue to blow….. saves that is ; )
Yep!
O'Day brings a different arm angle but hes basically 1 dimensional (should only be used vs righties, and will struggle if hes going to pitch more than an inning).. Figueroa might not have a plus pitch but he has a bunch of pitches he can throw at you, and should have more success pitching an inning or 2 opposed to O'Day… as well as the fact he can pitch to both lefties/righties
I'm watching the SD/PHI game and Lidge just blew the save big-time – 4 runs in the 9th…he's pulled from the game and the PHI fans give him a standing ovation on the way to the dugout…when did Philly fans become classy?
It's still the honeymoon phase over down there, wait a couple of months…
They booed 17 minutes into the Opening Day game.
Matt, it's bad enough you completely ruined the comments section, but can you at least post accurate information?
Do you want some cheese w/ that?
I thought this was a blog, and I don't remember signing anything stating that Matt would break every story coming out of Citi. Who knows he may even have a life.
Why don't you go create your own blog and then we can all navigate there and whine.
nobody said that matt has to write every post and man the blog 24-7. But it's is his job now, and he should act that way. He has a bunch of other bloggers, he can make sure there is always coverage to report on things when appropriate. The season has started, get with it.
If it was too much work for him he shouldn't have picked a sport with a 162 game schedule.
Geeez louise, people, leave the guy alone. You don't know anything about how much Matt or anyone else is paid, what he's expected to do for that money, what his other responsibilities might be… and I'll bet not a single one of you who constantly critique him have ever run a site like this or anything close. You have no idea what it's like. If you think you can do better, go start your own, superior blog — then we'll talk. Otherwise… chill out, already.
Yeah, but there are many other baseball blogs that are run much better than this one. So, while we realize Matt has a life, that doesn't mean the blog should suffer because of it.
that's such a lame argument, "start your own blog". That's not my job to start a blog. I have a full time job, and I work my ass of to try to do it right. This is Matt's FULL TIME JOB, but it often seems like it's something he does in his spare time.
There are lots of other blogs out there that do a much better job of updates, posts, etc. They have teams of posters who are assigned different shifts for coverage. The people who run them actually take them seriously and run them like they are their businesses. That's what people are asking for.
the phillies are losing8-7 bottom 9
8-5?
O'Day sucks. He may have a 0.00 ERA but he has come into games with 3 guys on base and all 3 guys have scored. That is 100% of inherited runners scoring. That is garbage for a relief pitcher. I don't know if Figs is the answer but O'Day is not.
O'Day would have been nice to retain, but the Mets have a number of relievers capable of equaling what O'Day can do. Muniz, Robertson, and even Nieve won't be much different if they need to be called up to be the last man in the pen for a while.
Its is a shame the Mets couldnt hold onto O'Day until the Angels got thier injured pitchers back, but even then they likely would take him back and send him to the minors. Maybe the Mets can open up some conversation regarding trading for Juan Rivera and O'Day later in the year or in the offseason.
I will hold my opinion on Delgado until Sept, as should Omar…
regarding Sunday, I will be happy if Figueroa keeps them in the game.
The Mets early schedule is not favorable and I think it will be very tough to catch the Marlins that quickly. It might not be until after the All Star break, but that is fine. Look at the May schedule, if the Mets get to June 1st more than a couple games over .500 it will be a nice result.
Actually the Marlins worry me. Last year no one through the Rays would hang onto 1st, eventually they had to lose it right? Well the Marlins have even better pitching, and will expand thier payroll to bring in some relievers. They are better than a 3rd or 4th place team. Someone needs to get them some losses before they get too much confidence.
Figeuroa pitched a very good game against Milwaukee last year and he certainly knows what he's doing and will give us a chance to win. didn't really want to lose O'Day, but he was an extra part anyway.
This is a good choice. I know some may criticize, if he doesn't pitch well tomorrow, but I feel more comfortable relying on him for 5 or 6 IP, with like 3 ER, than I do with Niese or Gee. What we need is the chance to win every game and we should give ourselves that best chance every game. That means there shouldn't be much experimenting, unless we know for certain it's the right choice.
Even though O'Day hadn't technically given up an earned run yet, that game winning hit in the first week of the season, with 2 out and runner on 1st, was probably worst than that. He was obviously the weakest link in the bullpen. I'd like to retain him, but if not, I'd be happy to see Elmer Dessens, Ken Takahashi or Nelson Figueroa get a chance in the bullpen.
Dumb@$$, who would YOU promote?
And as a matter of fact, Figgy beat the Brewers at home LAST YEAR, which makes your post look all the more idiotic
I have some serious faith in Brooklyn Fig. He's better than what most teams would run out in this situation. He's proven his worth in a NYM uniform. Lets see what hes got this year.
i really hope the mets can get O'Day back from the angels i hope the angels don't want him and the mets can sign him to a minor legue deal i really like his stuff
bad idea to release a piece of the team to simply miss one start. should have dl'd Pelfrey or moved a guy with options like Parnell temporarily. With Krod, Green and Putz all pitching well, we certainly could have gone with them and one less option for the 7th inning
