good lineup, specially with castro in there. i think the mets have to leave castillo in the 2 spot and move muphy down.

Agreed, with the play Castillo is playing, his ability to get on base is probably more needed in the 2 spot. I think it's a bit overrated about having a fast #8 hitter so your pitcher can sacrifice for him.

I'm with you guys on this. He's getting on, which is good. Nothing wrong with Murphy at the plate right now either, but with Reyes/Castillo, it's the perfect table setters. Castillo has more speed than Murphy. Plus with Murph in the 7th spot, the bottom of the lineup looks a lot better as Murph is more likely to get that extra base hit than Castillo is.

yup, bottom of the order needs some improvement, and moving Castillo to the 2 spot lengthens the lineup.

Who's a better hitter? The answer to that question is the answer to the question of who should bat #2. It means significantly more AB's over the course of a season…

Kudos to Pelf – though I think it's the best decision to miss one start. He really wanted to pitch and really fought not to be on the DL. Makes it a little more difficult to get his replacement up here though. They said on the pregame, it's really only a precaution b/c if this was the middle of a division race, he would have pitched.

And Perez deals. Fast ball hit in the air to left field, thats deep. Back goes Chavez. Back near the wall…LEAPING…anddd….HE MADE THE CATCH!!! HE TOOK A HOME RUN AWAY FROM ROLEN! Trying to get back to first Edmonds, hes doubled off and the inning is over! Endy Chavez saves the day! He reached high over the left field wall, right in front of the mets visitors bullpen, and pulls back a two run homer! He went to the apex of his leap, and caught it in the webbing of his glove, with his elbow up above the fence. A miraculous play by Endy Chavez. And then Edmonds is doubled off first, and Oliver Perez escapes the 6th inning. The play of the year, the play maybe of the franchise history!

I'm actually conflicted about whether to bat Castillo or Murphy 2nd. Castillo has done a really good job of getting on base but the pitchers haven't done a great job of getting him over to score on a Reyes or Murphy single.

Castillo is best batting 1st or 2nd, but with Murphy batting 7th, he'll get less fastballs to hit and make the bottom of the lineup too lefty.

      Apr 18, 2009, 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #

I think in a perfect world Castillo is the best 2-hitter we've got (not, of course, the Castillo of 07-08…). Murphy has only what? 300 career at-bats? In fact, I like this lineup right here, loaded with power all the way to the 8-spot (if Castro can get some of his timing back), and I will not be lead to believe Sheff, even at 50, is a worse outfielder than Murphy. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the kid, but unless Sheffield slumps badly, to me Murphy is a bencher…

    • TRS86
      Apr 18, 2009, 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #

You bat Murphy 6th. He does not show a lot of difficulties with LH thus
      Reyes
      Castillo
      Wright
      Delgado
      Beltran
      Murphy
      Church
      Castro
At this point would be my prefered lineup.

We had a lot of luck last year with Church hitting second. I might swap him and Murphy and leave Castillo (who doesn't K much) in the 8 spot.

    • Hernandez_1B
      Apr 18, 2009, 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #

The only problem with Castillo batting 2nd is that he might fall back into his old habits and take too many pitches. Jerry told him to be more aggressive. I don't think he can be too aggressive in the 2 hole if Reyes gets on base before him

Philip Humber was designated for assignment yesterday. Any word on if he passed thru waivers? He'd be a nice pickup for the Mets who need all the rotation depth they can get down in AAA.

OMG, we almost had another come from ahead loss!!! This game was ugly and we should not have this much trouble with the only other team that is as bad as we are. My big concen ib Boobtran, twice he came to bat with the bases loaded and what did he do, STRIKE OUT! We need mor productive out from these guys in those situations. Even Santos in his first MLB at bat grounded out to third, but, drove in the run from third. Another thing that is an issue ib the constabt give back's. We score 3 runs early and by the 5th we are behind by a run or two, that as to stop also. I was thrillied to see Shef hit 500 and tie the game and Castillo win it with a nubber. It should not have been that close, but, a WIN is a WIN and we will take anyway we can.

Nothwithstanding our ability to score any runs when the one reliable pitcher we’ve got is on the mound, I think everyone agree our biggest weakness is starting pitching. If we don’t fix it soon, the bull pen is going to wear out by mid-summer and we can forget about October for another year. Eric Beddard would be a great #2. Although both the Mariners are off to nice start, I just don’t see them being in the mix come this summer. I would give up Niese, Evans, and may be Moviel (F-Mart, Holt, Meija, Ramirez, Flores, Marte, Veloz) for Beddard. Once Pelfrey is healthy, you can count of Santana, Beddard, and Pelfrey to give us 7 innings in most starts, giving the bp a break. And for those inconsistent starts from Maine and Perez, you’ve got two good long relievers in Stokes and Livan. I know some people will complain about giving up our future. But we are jus one SP away from putting us over the top and we may not get this opportunity again in a while. Thoughts?

Part of the game, he's been turning a lot of DP's on defense i guess turnaround is fair play.

He does hit into a lot of them, but he also turns a lot, he'll be ok, looks like his hitting streak is snapped.

What else is new? Prepare for the parade of apologists. I like Wright a lot, but he's not a guy I want up in key situations in the late innings. Not that I'd pinch hit for him, but he's got a track record now. Chase Utley, he isn't, sad to say.

      • RichieHebner
        Apr 18, 2009, 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #

True enough, but it's hard to be too upset with the guy when I look at the back of his baseball card. I'm glad he's on my team. .300 hitting 100 run scoring 30 home run hitting 100 run driving in 20 stolen base gold glove winning 3rd basemen do not exactly grow on trees, especially in this organization.

        • TJ999
          Apr 18, 2009, 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #

I'll take a .280 average with 15 fewer RBIs if he could actually muster up some big hits every once in awhile. It's getting to the point where people are going to walk the 2 hitter with RISP to get to Wright.

          • RichieHebner
            Apr 18, 2009, 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm #

That's fair. Personally I'm happy the way he is, sometimes we forget he's 26 years old, but if I were going to "change" him I'd take the guy Keith Hernandez suggested the other day that he could be: a fewer home run hitting, .340 batting, more RBI even than now guy, if he went to RF more often.

            • OssMetsFan
              Apr 19, 2009, 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm #

People act like he does not go to RF on purpose, and that's just wrong, he has been hitting a lot of balls to RF, yesterday included that have even made it to the warning track, but he gets jammed a lot so it makes it more difficult.

          • Keith H.
            Apr 18, 2009, 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #

This is such nonesense. Just because he's in the situation a lot it seems like he fails a lot. Don't forget baseball is a game of failures – a .300 avg means you fail 7 out of 10 times. Wright gets enough big hits – u can't expect him to succeed every time, it's unrealistic…

        Apr 18, 2009, 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #

He was hitting .375 close and late coming into the game. And even last yr in his "unclutch" season he hit .286/.412/ .464/..876 in those spots, compared to Utley's .221/.353/.347/.701

Bobby Ojeda would. On Mets Weekly today, Julie asked who from the 09 Mets would he have wanted on the Mets while he was playing. His answer was DWright because he reminds him of HOJO and is much better.

        Apr 19, 2009, 1:18 am at 1:18 am #

You're right, tmu. Chase Utley he is not. He is slightly better than Utley. At least from an offensive standpoint. Wright for his career has a higher OPS, higher OPS+ and slightly better numbers with RISP. Utley is an overall better defensive player however.

One thing to note is that Utley has played almost his entire career in a bandbox and that he is also 4 years older than Wright.

Right now, I give the edge to Wright.

        • NYM712
          Apr 19, 2009, 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm #

Agreed. And both Utley and Wright are ridiculously good players.

So much was made about Wright's hitting with RISP last yr which is fair game…but extending that to say the guy has never been clutch is simply untrue. Sometimes guys numbers are just off in one aspect in a given yr. Utley hit .221 in close and late situations last yr…does that mean he is terrible and has never been good at getting a big hit late in a game? Of course not

It's not even stealing. I find them not taking the extra base often enough. They have the speed to do so. (ex: if Reyes is on 1st, he should be able to make it to 3rd a lot of the time on a single by the next batter).

          Eric,

Actually, it was blacked out on Extra Innings today – so maybe that created the crush of traffic and extra hiccups on MLB.tv. I get mad at the lag time on the laptop and frustrated occasionally with the other team's announcers on Extra Innings when getting a non-SNY feed, but overall, I am thrilled that I can see the vast majority of Mets games all the way across the country (I'm in Oregon). I mean, back in the day, you got maybe a few televised games, then the whole season, but only if you lived in NY. Now….it is amazing – I can watch a Mets game on my TV in Oregon, or on my laptop at the airport in L.A.

This is the game we lost over and over again last year (Santana leaves after a great outing leading by one, bullpen comes in to blow it) but this year it was THE perfect showcase of the doors shut formula of Santana—>Putz—–>KRod. Yes, he did. And he's not looking good so far this April. His MVP aside, I'm ecstatic we have Johan. I said it before the season started…I know we have question marks in our rotation but I wasn't impressed with the Phillies starters at all. And hands down, we have the better BP right now, especially with their set up guy out for 50 games.

Maine and Pelfry start getting it together, giving 6 good innings and we'll be in good shape. Perez, well Ollie is always gonna be Ollie….

Who thinks the Mets will resign Delgado? I hope they do and he finishes his carrer with the Mets as well as Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Santana. Also, the Mets are going to win tomorrow. The Nationals are terrible now and the Marlins are just lucky. The Mets should be in 1st place by the end of April or beginning of May. These are the final standindg of the year. Who agree's with me?

    Marlins/Braves

I will hold my opinion on Delgado until Sept, as should Omar…
regarding Sunday, I will be happy if Figueroa keeps them in the game.
The Mets early schedule is not favorable and I think it will be very tough to catch the Marlins that quickly. It might not be until after the All Star break, but that is fine. Look at the May schedule, if the Mets get to June 1st more than a couple games over .500 it will be a nice result.
Actually the Marlins worry me. Last year no one through the Rays would hang onto 1st, eventually they had to lose it right? Well the Marlins have even better pitching, and will expand thier payroll to bring in some relievers. They are better than a 3rd or 4th place team. Someone needs to get them some losses before they get too much confidence.

Holy crap score some freaking runs for Santana…….he should be 3-0 and on the way to a CY Young

Also O'Day going blows, Angels will take him back for sure and he goes back to where his buddy was and likey takes his spot after he passed away eeeek

I guess the Mets have tons of depth and Figueroa will just stay in O
    Days spot in the pen

as for Santos, meh whatever they are all even in my books ,Rivera, Cancel, etc

I heard Jerry say that on Friday. Said he needs to get Tatis in the lineup, get him some consistent plate appearances, so he was going to start him at 2nd for one of these day games.

I wonder why they just didn't DL Pelfrey. It would've been for only one start. It would be a shame to lose O'Day.

We were going to lose O'day eventually in a situation like this or to make room for another lefty down there (you know, before Feliciano's arm falls off!).

Been out enjoying the nice day here in Oregon after the game….came home and saw the Yank-me score. Holy cow! What a shame. :-)

Don't think Figgy is a ground-ball pitcher so might make sense. Although with Castillo as hot as he is, I wouldn't mess with him. I'd have Wright take a day off.

Putz arm strength showed today, he consistently threw his 4seam between 95-97 and his splitter was so filthy it dropped off the table, I can't wait until this bullpen gets into mid season form along with the line up.

Tip your hat to the Mets today. They played a great game. Surely, we'd love to see them score more runs, but tip your hat to Gallardo too. He pitched great too. Even though the Church hit and run double play was unfortunate, I like that Jerry was aggressive. The basic thing to take out of this game is that, we applied our method, which was the plan since December. Get in the 8th with a lead and it's a nearly guaranteed win. Who'd think we'd have no blown saves through the first 11 games of the season, with 9 games decided by less than 2 runs? On the other hand, the Phillies have had two blown saves in the last two days, one which snapped Lidge's streak. One thing about Mets fans is, we demand perfection. We're unhappy when we don't get it. But it's alright, because it's justified why we have high expectations. We had anxiety in the 2nd game of the season, when Feliciano boiled our blood, and we got upset with that walk off from O'Day, but from Sunday through Saturday, the bullpen has only yieled one earned run in I believe 17 innings, which is incredible.
