The Mets designated Nelson Figueroa for assignment following today’s loss to the Brewers.
The Mets purchased the contract of Casey Fossum from Triple-A Buffalo, who will take Figueroa’s spot on the roster.
…so, let me get this straight, essentially, the Mets just traded figueroa and Darren O’Day for fossum… i mean, there really wasn’t a more efficient way to bring on a spot starter for the afternoon… seriously, any time roster management comes to in play, i panic, because, while i believe Omar Minaya does a good job with major acquisitions, i feel he fumbles the ball a lot on these little moves…
…i feel bad for nelson, actually, who i wish could find a permanent job on a roster… hopefully he ends up back in the system…

The least you should know…
- Nelson Figueroa pitched six innings, allowed three runs and fits. He was designated for assignment after the game.
- Carlos Delgado hit home Daniel Murphy with an opposite-field, two-out, two-strike double off the left-field wall.
- The Brewers scored on a Mike Cameron home run, a sac-fly, a fielder’s choice and a single from Rickie Weeks.
Other Observations…
- I feel the Mets will do something special on days when they were the blue hats and pinstripes – unfortunately, this is not always the case.
- Daniel Murphy had three more hits, and continues to look like a professional hitter… especially hitting the other way.
- I find it easy to root for Figueroa, who I wish the Mets could find a permanent spot for.
- Yet one more fan leaned over to interfere with a fly ball down the line, which Murphy may have caught. Folks, please keep your hands inside the car. Naturally, Mike Cameron hit a home run in the following at bat. Come on, people. Help the Mets, don’t hurt ‘em.
- Watching an eventual loss on DVR is the worst.
- I had no issue with keeping Tatis in to hit with runners on base, since he had been such a clutch hitter in the past, though a bunt from Luis Castillo could have been handy.
- Apparently, the sun is a problem during day games for the right fielder, though Gary Sheffield did a nice job, albeit jockeying for position, on two separate pops ups. The Brewers outfielder did not have the same luck, letting a ball accidentally drop, which Jose Reyes turned in to a triple.
- The Mets were 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position, and, while it’s early, I wonder when this starts to become a concern for management. It’s like the entire offense is just out of sync – every time I get on the edge of my seat and think, ‘OK, this is it,’ some one grounds out and the inning is over.
- Brewers closer Todd Coffey, who grew up a Mets fan, pitched in three innings for his first save of the season.
The Mets are off tomorrow – they return to action on Tuesday against the Cardinals in St. Louis with Oliver Perez on the mound.

Fernando Tatis will bat seventh today, and start at second base in place of Luis Castillo.
…i never thought this would happen… but, i guess the arrival of Gary Sheffield, who has significantly reduced fernando’s playing time, means luis takes a back seat to get tatis more at bats… shocking, to me, in that castillo is on a roll, now hitting .400… but, for all we know he needs a rest, and today makes a good time to kill a few birds with one stone…
Omir Santos will start at catcher today, in place of Ramon Castro.
Also, again, Gary Sheffield will start in right field in place of Ryan Church.
…i expected sheff to start in right, with church in center, but i guess Jerry Manuel disagrees… i wonder how church feels about this…
Yesterday, in a win against the Brewers, Johan Santana pitched seven scoreless innings, while allowing five hits, walking nobody, and striking out seven.
In 19.2 innings this season, Santana has allowed just one earned run, while striking out an MLB-leading 27 batters.
Santana said, ‘No,’ when asked if plans on 
letting up any runs this season, after which he smiled and explained he is just trying to do his job as best he can.
…i love watching the opposing batter’s knees, when santana is on the mound… he keeps them so off balance with that change-up, and pin-point control with his fastball, that their knees are buckling and shifting all over the place in that batter’s box… the result of which is weak pop ups, ground balls and lots of awkward swings and misses, against a guy who has been in the league for nine full seasons…
