Given Castro's history of breaking down when he's most needed, giving him a rest makes sense, and Jerry has been saying for about a week that Tatis was going to get a game at 2B this weekend, so that makes sense, but sitting Church for Sheffield is a bit of a head scratcher, especially against a righty.

i just read somewhere that church is 3 for 3 against suppan. wouldn't you guess that someone on the mets would also know this? why would you sit him today of all days, especially when you have your catcher and 2nd baseman sitting as well?

      Apr 19, 2009, 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #

You are correct, 3-3 with a double and an RBI, and a walk as well. Small sample, but still.

And Sheffield is 1 for 9 (double) lifetime against Suppan. Also a small sample, but I think I'd rather take my chances with Church today…

I even tried to dive into it further, I checked day/night splits. Church is virtually identical, and Sheff is slightly better at night. There is something else going on. My only guess is there is an assumption that Murphy and Church, being younger, can "get it going" more quickly, and that Sheffield needs more PT for that purpose. That or Manuel just doesn't like Church?

Yeah a little scary. Sheff isn't that bad out there. But the other 2 are going to be shaky. IF tatis can play 2nd, this team has the ability to run out a very very scary lineup on certain days.

I have no problem with the ads. this is Matt's business, so if that helps him make money, no problem.

It would just be nice if the quality of the blog would increase along with Matt's revenue.

Isn't it already the KFC Post game report…. It's ridiculous and rather annoying. Everything is sponsored. Mets and yankees got everything covered. 15th batter, geico wants to remind you that you can save 15% or more on car insurance…. That stolen base is brought to you by Lo Jack….. I can't even remember all of them.

Still thank god Guisseppe Franco is no longer on commercials.

I just don't get the objection. Matt started this blog as a hobby / as a fun thing to do as a huge fan while he was in school. Over time, the guy built it into such a successful site that he actually makes a living with it. Good for him!!!! What is WRONG with that? Not like he is charging you. The ads areen't pop-ups. I think it is a great story that the guy has turned this into a career.

As for the broadcasts of the games being full of sponsors…where have you been? It has always been the case…listen to an old 1950s broadcast someday. "This inning brought to you by Schlit's beer …..mmmm, that's tatsy." "This inning brought to you by Marlboro – extra smooth and now with extra healthy nicotine!" :-)

I'm not sure I like Tatis subbing for Castillo, especially when Castillo has gotten off to such a good start.

I'd rather see Tatis come in for David or Delgado, Cora come in for Reyes or Castillo, Sheff in for Murphy or Church, and Reed in for Beltran.

That's how I'd use the bench.

I guess with Castillo off they couldn't give Murph a day off, but that only makes sense if Jerry doesn't want Church batting 2nd. I would've given Murph the day off.

I think your all over anaylizing it a little bit. Nothing bad, but I think jerry is just keeping people Fresh. I agree with Matt that you would think Carlos didn't get a day off yet so it would be his turn. But with Figgy on the mound and the Large CF in Citi that Manuel wants his defense out there. I might be over thinking it also.

Regarding Church sitting, earlier post mentioned Beltran unhappy about being doubled off when he was off to steal third and Church lined out. Maybe Church missed a sign and this is punishment?

Or maybe just extra rest given his health issues last year?

These little things with Manuel are starting to get at me. You have Tatis 1st and 2nd no out. He's 0-3 on the day. He's not a natural 2B by any means. Why not test their defense like yesterday in the seventh by bringing in Alex Cora? The same guy who made the error is playing 2B. Why not Castillo? One of his best qualities is his bunting. That's the wrong move. I can live with the hit and running, but with 1st and 2nd, it's very risky.

Exactly. If anyone bunts, it's Tatis. Santos was crushing the ball, and you don't wanna bunt when the tying run is already in scoring position with one out. It's not like there was a big hitter behind him…

Don't know, don't get paid to know, but I've watched this team play this way going on three seasons now and it's quite clear that something is off. I will say this, though, if they miss the playoffs again, I do think they should break up this team, not necessarily an out and out rebuild, but everyone should be available for the right price.

            Apr 19, 2009, 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #

All I can say is that Wright had the quietest 10 game hitting streak I ever saw. The only hit that meant something was the 3 run HR on opening night.

This guy is killing me and the team. On any other team, the "face of the franchise" would man up and get the run home.

      • A_Wharton
        Apr 19, 2009, 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #

And a million times you've been wrong. It's obviously the supporting cast, i.e. the bottom of the lineup. I didn't like the fact that Manuel sat BOTH Church and Castillo, who are our best hitters so far…I think Castillo has to hit 2nd with Murphy 7th, which extends the lineup and shouldn't strand so many runners.

Things will click, but until they do it's going to be frustrating. Again, it's only 12 games in. If they're still doing this crap mid-May or June, we've got issues.

The fact this team can't hit with RISP or leaves so many runners on base shows me this team isn't ready. The Phillies won another game by one run, with the Ibanez walk off, because of Bud Black's stupidity to not put in Heath Bell in the bottom of the 9th, even though he was warming him up. Tatis is up…Castillo is on the bench. He is an excellent bunter, and might even beat out a bunt. Why do you not bunt in the bottom of the eight innings, one run down? Jerry are you dense?

I really feel like I should be much more patient in April. It's getting really tough, though. It's early, but Wright looks like a throwaway player right now. I'm sure he'll get better, but will that be in the 3 hole? How many games does the offense need to be hushed before Manuel realizes it needs to be shuffled? When you get shut down by Suppan (granted the strike zone was erratic), you really need to take a good hard look at yourself.

And who the hell is this Omir kid? I was pretty impressed by his first (?) big league game.

This is what happens when you basically bring back the same lineup from last year. A lineup, that while decent statistically showed little knack for getting hits when it counted. I'm not saying Manny should have been signed, but there were moves out there that would have changed the makeup of the lineup and maybe even challenge some these guys. I brought this up in the offseason and I remember being told to shut up because the offense was like 3rd in runs or something. My reply was, how many runs did they score in September? I don't remember hearing anything after that.

Some teams find ways to win games… we finds ways NOT TO! Jerry has to get more aggressive on the bases… steal more, hit and run more… it feels like we just sit back and wait for the big home run which are not coming. And please Omar, can we get a real #2 starter.

Heres a fun fact. Bobby Abreu has more stolen bases this season than the entire New York Mets.

The thing that bothers me is, that the Mets continue to make Suppan look like a good pitcher, while the rest of the league has caught on that Suppan actually sucks. When will the Mets?

Does anyone else find it incredibly corny that although the post game post from yesterdays game wasnt on the site at all yesterday, matt posts it this morning and changes the date and time to make it seem that it was posted at 11:00 pm yesterday. And on top of that, he turns the comments off for that post because he knew he'd take a beating for it.

Right b/c no other star player has ever slumped before. The "face of the franchise" for every other team bats 1.000

    • fxcarden
      Apr 19, 2009, 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm #

I'm not asking for him to hit .1000 . I want him to be more succesful when the game is on the line. You can hit .300 all year and not be a factor, or you can hit .270 and be the MVP if you produce when it counts.

Last time I looked the purpose of the game is to score more runs than the other team. It's not happening this year, and Wright seems to be involved every time they fail. So….that being said….if you are the face of the franchise, you should really take it personally instead of giving lip service in the post game interviews.

I am sure sometime in the next 5 months Wright will go on a streak and kick butt for a time. The question is….will he do the SHUA thing again in September. Seems to me he is practicing now.

        Apr 19, 2009, 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #

One more point…..if Wright made hard outs, I wouldn't be so pissed at him. I know it's a tiny sample, but look at Santos today…he smoked that ball, but it was a DP. No issue with that outcome.

        Apr 20, 2009, 10:58 pm at 10:58 pm #

LOL at Wright not taking it personally when the Mets lose. If anything I think he takes the losses too personally…he'd be better if he chilled out a bit and got over things quicker. He's always the guy saying he needs to play better, the team needs to play better, etc, its not like he acts like these games don't matter.

    Apr 19, 2009, 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #

Well how about it? Late in the game, I play the odds, understand? I'm not crying about Sanos DP ball, that was bad luck you are right. But since I know nothing humor me for a minute, if there are runners on second and third and one out, that is whole new set of dynamics instead of man on first and third and one out. Now a deep fly could have at least tied the game at that point. See this is called small ball, I know it doesn't look as good on sportscenter but it gets wins. Something I don't see alot of with The New York Mets.

I honestly can't remember being so certain that runners in scoring position would NOT be knocked in. It kind of kills you a little inside. On the rare occasion they do manufacture a run it's a pleasant surprise, sure. But there is something inherently wrong with being shocked when they score as opposed to the other way around.

Perez / Maine / Livan against St. Louis. Oh boy. I hope they skip Livan and pitch Johan on turn. At least we'll be competitive one game. Livan can pitch out of the 'pen one day to stay sharp. Then Johan can pitch the middle game of the Marlins series. Maybe he won't match up with Johnson again.

I am sooo frustrated. What is going on? KL15 you are right. It is two men on and nobody out – bottom of the eighth. Castillo is on the Bench (best bunter on team and may get a hit). Jerry are dense?

Also, what do you think? Wright is too comfortable in the three hole, and is strking out too much the last couple of years (since the home run hitting contest). I love him but may be he will concentrate more if he is challenged and put in the five hole. Also, I think Murphy (although young) is a great hitter and should be in the three slot for righties.

Reyes, Castillo (hitting well so far), Murphy, Delgado, Wright, Beltran, Church, Castro/Schneider/Santos, pitcher

Lefty lineup (I know not great defensively
Reyes, Murphy, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Sheffield (RF), Tatis (2B), Castro/Santos

    How about it?

      Wright and Beltran- 5 & 6? Yuck.

And Wright's problems aren't lack of concentration, he's just not swinging the bat well right now. And he hasn't K'ed more often the past couple seasons than he did before the derby. He's struck out a ton this season, but its a small sample. His K per PA rate has actually gone down every year.

dont blame wright, dont blame jerry… the blame goes on Omar Minaya. He is just not a good GM! it seems that for the past 3 seasons we have watched more games than him. any of us could have realized for 3 straight years the mets never and i mean NEVER get the big hit this team lacks heart. manny ramirez was the answer this offseason he should have been the number one priority. he takes the preasure off wright and beltran and would have been the leader the mets need. the season is over its the same crap as every other year…

dont blame wright or jerry the blame all goes on Omar Minaya. It just seems like we have watched more games than him over the past 3 seasons and we know the mets will never get the big hit! this team lacks heart and minaya number one target should have been Manny Ramirez. this team needs a player like manny who can take the preasure off of wright and beltran and hit in the clutch. minaya is a horrible GM he runs out the same lineup for almost 3 straight seasons when we collpased due to the lack of hitting. we never hit. i have never seen a team who fail to get a hit with RISP more than this one. its an absolute disgrace

If its not pitching, the problem is hitting, if they;re hitting, their pitching is giving the runs back. Godo teams pick each other up (like santana did yesterday), however this team seems to let each other down as often as possible. you get this good performance from figeruo (however that is spelt) coming from the minors, and they can't even score two runs! I'm not even suprised anymore. i was listening on the radio and as soon as tatis wasn't bunting, i EXPECTED them to not bring in a run. i actually expected them to not be able to get 1 run with no outs and two on, and they fail to dissapoint. And its not like you can say "well if castillo played, or if he was on the team", because they;re putting themselves in the right spots. you want your big boppers up witht he game on the line, you want delgado up in that spot, you want wright up with risp, and when that keeps failing day in and day out, then you have gotta get some new boppers.

I'm really trying hard to defend DW but he makes it harder and harder these days. I hate it but I have no confidence when he comes up with RISP, I don't want to feel that way but he just hasn't instilled any confidence in his ability to get big hits right now. I'm amazing how they put 2 runners on every inning it seems like, and just no big hits. 6 losses and four by one run and two by two runs. These games have been right there for the taking and they haven't done it.
