Given Castro's history of breaking down when he's most needed, giving him a rest makes sense, and Jerry has been saying for about a week that Tatis was going to get a game at 2B this weekend, so that makes sense, but sitting Church for Sheffield is a bit of a head scratcher, especially against a righty.
Agree, on all points.
SWEEP !
YES! First sweep at Citi Field! :) A little revenge against Suppan.
i just read somewhere that church is 3 for 3 against suppan. wouldn't you guess that someone on the mets would also know this? why would you sit him today of all days, especially when you have your catcher and 2nd baseman sitting as well?
You are correct, 3-3 with a double and an RBI, and a walk as well. Small sample, but still.
And Sheffield is 1 for 9 (double) lifetime against Suppan. Also a small sample, but I think I'd rather take my chances with Church today…
I even tried to dive into it further, I checked day/night splits. Church is virtually identical, and Sheff is slightly better at night. There is something else going on. My only guess is there is an assumption that Murphy and Church, being younger, can "get it going" more quickly, and that Sheffield needs more PT for that purpose. That or Manuel just doesn't like Church?
We need some of these today from a few guys!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOacGXYJouI
Well obviously Delgado's the closest, but I doubt he hits 28 homers in one game.
Wow, Murphy, Sheffield, AND Tatis on defense today. Figs better be up to the task…
Yeah a little scary. Sheff isn't that bad out there. But the other 2 are going to be shaky. IF tatis can play 2nd, this team has the ability to run out a very very scary lineup on certain days.
Maybe I should add "Gold Glover" David Wright to that list as well…
Pepsi Refresh Pre-Game? What's next? MaxiPad Post-Game Special?
Why do you care? Matt has a right to make a profit. His ads aren't intrusive.
zen, have you not had the pleasure of meeting randytate yet?
I have no problem with the ads. this is Matt's business, so if that helps him make money, no problem.
It would just be nice if the quality of the blog would increase along with Matt's revenue.
Overall, while there are still (somewhat charming) typos and mistakes – the blog has improved with Matt's added access to the team, to ST, etc.
Isn't it already the KFC Post game report…. It's ridiculous and rather annoying. Everything is sponsored. Mets and yankees got everything covered. 15th batter, geico wants to remind you that you can save 15% or more on car insurance…. That stolen base is brought to you by Lo Jack….. I can't even remember all of them.
Still thank god Guisseppe Franco is no longer on commercials.
I just don't get the objection. Matt started this blog as a hobby / as a fun thing to do as a huge fan while he was in school. Over time, the guy built it into such a successful site that he actually makes a living with it. Good for him!!!! What is WRONG with that? Not like he is charging you. The ads areen't pop-ups. I think it is a great story that the guy has turned this into a career.
As for the broadcasts of the games being full of sponsors…where have you been? It has always been the case…listen to an old 1950s broadcast someday. "This inning brought to you by Schlit's beer …..mmmm, that's tatsy." "This inning brought to you by Marlboro – extra smooth and now with extra healthy nicotine!" :-)
I just don't get the complaining on this. To tell the truth, I didn't even notice the Pepsi graphic, until someone else complained about it the other day. Tells you how much I care – or pay attention.
Honestly, I think Matt has become a little too in bed with the Mets for my comfort, but this site is still the best at delivering breaking Mets news.
lets go mets and hope taitis is good at 2nd and let him get good at plate an lets hope the mets sweep today
Crystal ball sez:
Figgy: 5 2/3 2 ER 4 BB 5 K
Parnell 1 1/3 0 ER 0 BB 2 K
Putz 1 0 ER 3 K
K Rod 1 0 ER 2 BB 2 K
Suppan: 6 1/3 3 ER 2 BB 7 K (gives up 3 run bomb to Sheffield after 2 walks).
Coffey : 2/3 0 ER 0 BB 0 K
Jorge Julio 1 1 ER 0 BB 1 K (gives up bomb to Beltran).
Final Mets 4, Willie Randolph 1
you have figgy giving up 2 ER
Yes, He is no Johan.
Fine…..Mets 4……Wilie 2.
Stupid Wal-Mart crystal ball……..next time I'll buy a professional one.
It's been commented that the time of the posts don't always reflect the time it was posted b/c they're not always posted when it's written, hence the time difference, sort of like delayed posting.
As to why the comments are closed to that post, I found that a little strange myself.
Comments weren't working off and on the last couple of days. You guys and your conspiracy theories. Did the Cubans kill JFK in your world?
Hey, don't lump me in with those and their theories. I was just commenting that the delayed post was no big deal. And had no idea why comments were closed.
Wasn't referring to you specifically…after the complaining about the sponsors, etc….it is just silly stuff.
everyone knows he was killed because he was going to allow the Treasury to make U.S. money instead of the Federal Reserve.
LOL
I'm not sure I like Tatis subbing for Castillo, especially when Castillo has gotten off to such a good start.
I'd rather see Tatis come in for David or Delgado, Cora come in for Reyes or Castillo, Sheff in for Murphy or Church, and Reed in for Beltran.
That's how I'd use the bench.
I don't get why Church is sitting….at all.
I guess with Castillo off they couldn't give Murph a day off, but that only makes sense if Jerry doesn't want Church batting 2nd. I would've given Murph the day off.
I think your all over anaylizing it a little bit. Nothing bad, but I think jerry is just keeping people Fresh. I agree with Matt that you would think Carlos didn't get a day off yet so it would be his turn. But with Figgy on the mound and the Large CF in Citi that Manuel wants his defense out there. I might be over thinking it also.
Lets go METS!!!!!! SWEEP
In Omir we trust!
Regarding Church sitting, earlier post mentioned Beltran unhappy about being doubled off when he was off to steal third and Church lined out. Maybe Church missed a sign and this is punishment?
Or maybe just extra rest given his health issues last year?
This is about to get ugly.
I stand corrected Figgy, good work.
Yeah, it was a 5-out 1st inning by Figgy! (Counting Wright's error and clear strike 3 to Fielder)
Talk about inconsistent. These umps this year are all over the place.
Nelson got robbed, should be two out now.
Three if you count the "base hit" that Wright fumbled
Well, yeah…
That last K evened it out though. Questionable if he went around but we'll take it.
I'd usually want the pitcher to get a ground ball here, but watching the Mets try to turn a double play is painful
Very nice, Nelson. Got himself out of that 1st inning jam. Professional……
how did thy not call that Wright play an error? he's gotta start making those routine plays if he wants another gold glove
Home scoring.
Woo hoo! No runs!!!!
Who's the man? Get Figgy with it! I told you suckers he owns the Brew Crew!
So who else would like to see Suppan get rocked today? LOL.
Too little too late unfortunately…
I live 894 miles from Citifield – northern Michigan. Can anyone tell me why mlb.com is blocking out Mets home games? I mean
Maybe you're in the Brewers' viewing area?
That makes NO sense…..I am watching them on MLB.tv vis the WPIX (SNY) feed beacuse the Extra Innings package has the Milwaukee feed. Call MLB (tomorrow may be better time) and see if they have you in the wrong ZIP code. Is your credit card billing address in NY or Milwaukee?
It's in Michigan. I'll call Mlb tomorrow.
That's a good guess, but I couldn't watch the series against the Padres either. It let me watch the Reds, 500 miles away. I'm also 490 miles to Buffalo, and since NY is a much larger market, maybe that's it.
I mean, am I really in a restricted viewing area?
Offense PLEASE!!
Thank You
Yes! And Delgado just keeps on hitting.
Thank god for Delgado, the only guy I trust on this team to drive in runs
he just blew a golden opportunity hitting into his 2nd DP of the day
Best news this season is that Delgado's second half last year wasn't a fluke. He can still hit and that means the offense is going to be okay. He's more feared than Wright or Beltran. Though the other two are better all around players.
Delgado wants a big contract because he is on fire
Just wondering if anyone can help me with blackout restrictions? I mean, I know this is all done to fleece you out of monthly payments while allowing you to watch the occasional game, but I live 900 miles from Flushing, and it won't let me watch Mets home games. Can someone tell me why? (Thanks in advance).
so, the brewers don't believe in HD?
I know…this standard definition looks horrible on my tv…..and these announcers are starting to piss me off.
yeah, awful announcers…
these announcers are the worst i've ever heard. the play at second; they see one replay, which is completely inconclusive and they soundly conclude that it was a good call by cousins. i mean, maybe it was, but we see one angle that is not clear and they just go with it because it helps "their" team?
This is why I get both Extra Innings and MLB.tv – can always synch the audio of WFAN to the Extra Innings feed, or, like today, watch the WPIX(SNY) feed on MLB.tv instead. For the record, gary, Keith and Ralph looked at like 5 replays and concluded it was close enough for the force out.

thanks for the gk&r call. i actually have mlb radio, but it's annoying to try to sync to my directv mlb ei feed.
It usually is pretty easy for me using my DVR functions. But, if you can't synch it, they can be WAAAY off. At least the Brewers announcers aren't as bad as the Marlins booth….or the Nats booth….or the D'Backs booth.
is ueker calling the game?
Well at least Shef can catch a fly ball, OK I'm sorry I said it.
People always ask why pitchers don't pitch inside anymore…..well, there you go
Somebody, anybody, explain to me why Church is sitting for the 2nd time in 3 days in favor of Sheff against a righty that has owned Sheff?
Cubans?
These days….Venezuelans more likely. :-)
I love how my post could end up anywhere on this blog
Santos would be the perfect 7th hitter in our every-day lineup.
Spirito Santos!
Funny to see Pavano shutting down the Yanks today.
Some of these guys need to learn how to foul off a pitch until you get a good one to swing at.
it's a bonehead move in tribute to willie "veterans-always-get-precedence-over-younger-guys-even-in-the-face-of-overwhelming-statistical-evidence" randolph, who is in the house this weekend for the first time since his infamous firing. hope he appreciates it, cause i sure don't.
I was shocked….I think Charlie Samuels does it just to tee off Gary, Howie and the rest of us traditionalists.
Well, crap.
Mets need to start stringing some hits together for a change and puts some runs on the board.
Good luck with it. If they can't help you, cancel the MLB.tv (maybe keep the audio for Fox and ESPN days) and look into Extra Innings on your cable or satellite provider. You get the vast majority of the games, though about 40% are the other teams' feeds.
Harsh…-1. :-)
hmmm my last post disappeared, but do a Google search for "MLB blackout map". There is a section in N. Michigan that falls into the Milwaukee viewing area, and may be the reason you aren't getting these games.
Figgy is hardly Cy Young…but you have to love how he goes about his business. For a AAA+ guy / depth / potential long man, he is perfect. Big step up from Lima-time.
The bats. They sleep.
Where is our OFFENSE? This guy has a 12 ERA! 1 run yesterday I could understand because Gallardo was on but this guy sucks.
holy crap! the best uni makes an appearance! and it's with the blue hat!
It's a Festivus miracle!! The actual home unis!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol…nice… can't wait for the feats of strength
Does anyone else feel as though they are being a bit generous with Suppan?
Damn Figs, you gave up a hit to a guy who needs a timeout to wear a jacket…
has anyone else been able to login to the chat here at metsblog?
uh oh…figgy is in trouble
Uh oh….FIggy tiring?
Anyone notice how Suppan kind of looks like a retarded Robert DeNiro?
can you believe this is a slimmer prince fielder? that dude is huge
Hey Ollie and Mainer – THAT is how you limit the damage after a tough start to an inning!!
Yes. Now can we please put some runs on the board???
They should walk Murphy here, seriously
Run, Reyes, Run !!
Sigh.
We have to own the record so far for runners left on base in scoring position.
PLEASE kick that asshole out of the game
+1
Glad to see Jose running out that pop up! good to see he has learned some lessons from previous seasons!
Jeff Suppan? really guys, Jeff Suppan?
Pathetic showing by the offense today.
They need to score some runs. It would be a real shame to waste a solid performance by Fig.
I mean, who wouldn't have signed for 6 IP 3 R from him?
This is a team that gave a pitcher who struck out 14 batters and gave up 0 earned runs a loss. I put nothing past this lineup.
that's true, but at least Josh Johnson is a stud.
Yes, its about as good as you could ask for. Especially against Suppan who is just itching to give up 5 run inning. If the hitters are just willing to let him.
Them offense sucks
This is depressing – especially against Suppan.
Just frigging unbelievable.
The team as a whole is probably batting 290, but about a buck twenty with RISP.
I know it's early but it's like watching the BP last year – you just knew they were gonna blow it. This year, you just know they're gonna strand the runners.
Sheff!
I live and die with this team but….
Odds they don't strand these runners?
0%, They will be stranded
Sheff looks great. Bat speed, arm in rightfield, and he's getting to more balls than Murphy. I'm surprised.
Anyone else feel like our new park with all it's quirky bounces and angled walls has hurt us a lot more than the opposition? Maybe it's just cause our L and R fielders aren't very good.
BTW, why aren't Church and Castillo playing again?
Yikes.
Lesson learned: give out a more pessimistic prediction with this kind of offense.
For some reason Suppan just knows how to shut down the Mets >.<…
It's a pretty big club
It should be what is always was….pinstripes and blue caps at home…..road greys with blue caps. Period. The end. But, I hear you on so many unis. Heck, we have a frequent commenter here with the screnname of "toomanyuniforms".
Runs would be useful. Maybe off the Brewer pen….
yeah nothing worse than the Black and blue hats. It'd be nice if the team could come to grips with the fact that they are the mets and not the giants/dodgers.
Agreed, start with the caps, then the stadium. Baby steps…
Man, what is with the stupid tarps on top of the bullpens. The Brewers player just said it is by far thw worse bullpen in all of baseball
Good, I'm glad the opposing team doesn't like it. I hope they feel uncomfortable
+1
i think the mets need to make it more uncomfortable for the opposing teams out there… i'm thinking aligators and spikes all over the walls…
have a loop of Degrassi playing in opposing dugouts
i love it. maybe we can give cowbell man a permanent weat out there as well
The tarps do make it look like a refugee camp out there….but (1) our guys seem to be pitching quite well…so I am happy with the pen! and (2) Isn't it a GOOD thing if the visiting pitchers hate their pen here?
Interesting that they didnt push Figgy for another inning. 91 pitches through 6 is a nice game, but why be in a hurry to bring Sean Green in again?
Manuel is going to have to find day other than Johan day to get someone the pen a breather.
Manuel is going to have to find a day other than Johan day to get someone in the pen a breather.
English is my first language, really it is…
I already like Santos more than Schneider
beautiful, this lineup is fantastic…
Ha!
You know though, one of the only good things with this format is you can edit your reply after you post it?
Where are the bats, Manuel?
1-x score might make your team a winner if the pitcher is Santana.
1-x score will not make the team a winner if the pitcher is another Mets pitcher.
OMIR!
I like this Santos kid! Schneider, take your time buddy.
SANTOS !!
a triple from the catcher?! on the mets?!!
Trade Schnieder – keep Blastro and Santos.
I agree. Never been much of a Schneider fan. I like what we're seeing from Santos so far. Nice bat, good approach at the plate, good speed for a catcher, and a pretty darned good arm.
C'mon Church! LET'S GO METS!
LETS GO METS!!
YES! That's one.
And who doesn't love this kid Santos?
Come on Wright, just don't hit into a DP, that's all I ask for
come on Wright, eye of the tiger!
he took a walk to load the bases, but Delgado hit into DP
should have asked for a little more…
Kiner is right – why didn't Jose go there?
Let's Go Mets !!!
A situation where we MUST take advantage! C'mon Delgado! LET'S GO METS!
figures
Someone is bound to hit them home…..
Unbelievable.
Actually, with this team, it's very believeable. I have had zero confidence in this offense going on two years now. It's a very frustrating way to watch baseball.
the curse of the bases loaded continues. the numbers so far this season are simply horrid:
3 hits (1 double, 2 singles)
17 ab
.176 avg
14 runs
now, the runs are ok, i guess, but man can someone just hit a gapper or something? i normally would moan about ANOTHER sac fly in that spot, but another DP…killer
All you have to do against this team when you get in trouble is load the bases. Inning over.
I have NEVER seen a team this bad for this long with the bases loaded. Ridiculous.
Wish I could argue with that. This is truly getting absolutely unbelievable.
Well, that or throw fastballs at David Wright
agreed, it is getting a little old. i thought that the success they had in 06 would even out a bit, but by now the mets should hit a slam the next 20 times they are loaded.
He swung at that pitch because he was upset about the first one (rightfully so) and thats all he was gonna do with that. That sucks
this team is just cursed with RISP, they cant score a run to save their lives.
Said it before:
Last year, you just knew the BP would blow it.
This year, men in scoring position, especially bases loaded, you just know they're gonna strand them.
I'm really going to laugh when they hit their stride and everyone else is back on the bandwagon. I swear, if any team has fair-weather fans, it's this one. IT'S 12 GAMES…lol
hi, i'm 2007 and 2008 … nice to meet you
Like I said, I'm just as frustrated as any of you, but to start saying things like "break up the core" and "this team is going nowhere" on April 19th is just insane. I'm worried about the SP, yes, but not the offense. They will come around, mark my words. And when they do, I'm not even going to say "I told you so."
But whatever. I'm done. You guys are seriously losing it, LOL.
Break up the core? That's the dumbest idea ever proposed.
whatever you guys think – firing hojo aint the answer – so i do not want to hear any stupid – FIRE JERRY FIRE HOJO OR FIRE MINAYA B.S !!! CAPICE??!!??
I have no doubt they will start clicking. It's watching them so off in the meantime that is beyond frustrating.
Wow,.. that must hurt. A fly ball would have tie the score at least.
Can't keep burning this pen-time to score some runs.
Our middle of the order is brutal with RISP.
Never thought I'd say this, but I'm kinda excited to use Castillo as a PH
Delgado, WHY WHY WHY!!??!! For God's sake you had another strike to play with! Everyone has to be a damn hero!! Everyone had to be a superstar! You could have simply waited and drove one to the outfield, but that wouldn't get you on Sportscenter would it!
i really like parnell, the kid is pretty fearless
That's strike 3 if I've ever seen
BUNT PLEASE!
WHY IS HE NOT BUNTING! ANOTHER DP BALL OUT OF INNING!! JESUS!!
Bunt? Why would you bunt and take the bat out of his hands? He hit the ball well today, and just got unlucky it was hit right at somebody. If you're gonna cry about Sanos' DP ball, you know NOTHING about baseball…
However, the other guys have no excuse. i.e. Delgado, Tatis, Wright, etc…
Come on, Omir. Antying but a double play.
LETS GO METS…I feel like a big hit is destiny for him right now
Please. I'm begging him….
Frigging unbelievable. That's got to be a record.
This team is miserable to watch
Ugh.
Are you freaking kidding me? Every GD run is like building they pyramids. GEEZ!
I'm trying not to use 4 letter words either but it's getting VERY difficult
JESUS CHRIST WHAT IN THE HELL HAS TO HAPPEN TO GET A DAMN HIT
I don't know but I think we should start lighting candles. Something. ANYTHING
These little things with Manuel are starting to get at me. You have Tatis 1st and 2nd no out. He's 0-3 on the day. He's not a natural 2B by any means. Why not test their defense like yesterday in the seventh by bringing in Alex Cora? The same guy who made the error is playing 2B. Why not Castillo? One of his best qualities is his bunting. That's the wrong move. I can live with the hit and running, but with 1st and 2nd, it's very risky.
Dispicable.
can anyone get a hit with men on? it is unreal.
Question:
Which number is greater?
Population of a small country?
Number of Runners left on base by the mets through 12 games?
At this point, I'm pretty sure RBI means the same thing to a Mets hitter with RISP as water does to the wicked witch.
What is that 18 LOB now?
Did you see that Jerry? That's called a bunt. That's what you do when you have a man on and less than two outs.
come on bobby, hold it and give them a chance in the 9th. too bad it seems no matter what they are not going to score on this coffey character.
Talk about unlucky. Santos crushed that ball…nothing you can do about that.
we got spoiled that yr with all the grannies and offense
NOT TO MENTION ITS JERRYS FAULT FOR PLAYING THE INFIELD BACK IN THE 3RD INNING W FIELDER UP SACRIFICING A RUN WHEN YOUR OWN TEAM CANT SCORE ANY RUNS
Damn…
Putz or K-Rod should have had this inning.
I SAY AGAIN ABOUT THE GD BUNT!!
Jerry is a bum. Ive said it all along and everyone has talked about his "swagga" and his "approach."
I don't know. Santos was swinging a hot bat and I don't like bunting with one out.
Exactly. If anyone bunts, it's Tatis. Santos was crushing the ball, and you don't wanna bunt when the tying run is already in scoring position with one out. It's not like there was a big hitter behind him…
When I put that post up Tatis was at bat.
Insurance run – doesn't matter. It's not like we're gonna put men on in the bottom of the 9th and get them in.
Stop being so negative and have some faith in your team
I usually am but most has dried up over the past week watching them strand runner after runner. I know at some point they'll start clicking but waiting for that to happen is getting so frustrating.
Omir, why couldn't you have lifted that ball a few feet instead of hitting it into Hall's glove?
it will when they put up that one run. if they don't pull it out, that will be 6 losses (4 one run/2 two run). sitting at .500 when they could be sitting a few games better. .500 overall, .500 home, .500 road
I've said this a million times, there is something fundamentally wrong with the makeup of this team, and it's not the supporting pieces, it's the core.
So what should they do, trade Wright or Reyes?
Don't know, don't get paid to know, but I've watched this team play this way going on three seasons now and it's quite clear that something is off. I will say this, though, if they miss the playoffs again, I do think they should break up this team, not necessarily an out and out rebuild, but everyone should be available for the right price.
All I can say is that Wright had the quietest 10 game hitting streak I ever saw. The only hit that meant something was the 3 run HR on opening night.
This guy is killing me and the team. On any other team, the "face of the franchise" would man up and get the run home.
And a million times you've been wrong. It's obviously the supporting cast, i.e. the bottom of the lineup. I didn't like the fact that Manuel sat BOTH Church and Castillo, who are our best hitters so far…I think Castillo has to hit 2nd with Murphy 7th, which extends the lineup and shouldn't strand so many runners.
Things will click, but until they do it's going to be frustrating. Again, it's only 12 games in. If they're still doing this crap mid-May or June, we've got issues.
Keep making excuses, you can be in denial all you want, but I'm right, and I think Mets fans are slowly coming around to this conclusion.
Yeah, because you're always right and you can see into the future. Haha, just hilarious.
Look guys, this is very frustrating, I know…but it's 12 f-ing games. When was the last time the season was determined in April? When was the last time a team didn't CHANGE throughout the course of a season? Answer me that, Mr. Know-it-all…
BTW, those WEREN"T excuses…its called not jumping ship after two weeks.
100 % agree on the lineup.
hi 4decades – i shut off the 9th did we get anyone on base???
Hey, Rusty. Mets went quietly in the 9th, much like the rest of the game.
That's pretty much the exact sentence I said when I saw that fourth run score. The offense had similar problems last season, but it wasn't as pronounced and the starters were giving us better efforts. I've got nothing but frustration at this point.
So that's what hit with risp looks like
The fact this team can't hit with RISP or leaves so many runners on base shows me this team isn't ready. The Phillies won another game by one run, with the Ibanez walk off, because of Bud Black's stupidity to not put in Heath Bell in the bottom of the 9th, even though he was warming him up. Little things in this game could have went either way too though.
big trouble now, big trouble. man i wish they could have put a sweep up on the board and get some momentum going. going to take a miracle now. god, we all now they are going to put up one run now
Test
agreed…again
they still pipe!
This game makes me sick
You know, even though when we're leading after the 7th feels like an automatic win, to a degree, it feels like if we're not leading or tied after 7, it's an automatic loss. It's like complete opposite. We have a bunch of p*ssy freaking hitters. Besides that one home run, which was early in that game, he simply isn't coming through. We're getting more production from Omir Santos than him.
Jerry Manuel is an AWFUL Manager. Not only does he not bunt in the bottom of the 8th inning, but he decides to play the infield back in the 3rd inning to sacrifice a run when he should know his own team cant score any runs. This game is all on Jerry.
I said a couple of weeks ago that Jerry Manuel needs to question some peoples manhood in the club house. And I was subsequently lambasted and was told "pep talks don't win games." Well after suffering this loss, by most likely two runs AGAIN, this laid back thing sure is winning alot of games isn't it?
jerry to team, 'you have no maaaarbles.'
Somebody needs to drink Yobu's rum.
O.K. – normally when you give a team 4 outs you pay. So Let's Go Mets!
Phillies came back and won not happening here
we didn't need Ibanez did we? start with a new team, admit it they WILL not win! don't have it, no chemistry, no leaders too much money!
Write your comment here…[polldaddy 1552040 http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/1552040/ polldaddy]
Phillies win, Ibanez walk off…….
What a f'ing joke
Of course David the p*ssy Wright can't come through. Who'd ever think he can? It's just a carry over from last September. If he comes through with hits or home runs, it's early in the game.
Wright can be so aggravating.. fastball down the pipe and he bloops it to the 2B. This is NOT good, he looks destined for 150+ K year with less than 30 HRs. book it.
Haha, I'll take that bet. Lord, it's 12 games…he never does good in April, guys.
Well, that was beyond disappointing. Practically everyone on this team can hit well. If they can just start stringing these hits in bunches, they can start putting some runs on the board.
Won't happen unless the lineup is modified.
Since Sunday, the Mets pen has only given up 2 ER in 19 IP, so that's not the probem. Figgy even looked pretty good too. He's worth giving a second shot at, if needed. Or hold onto as a long reliever.
Not trying to make excuses here, but that has to be one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen. I've never seen a strike zone move around that much in my life.
I've been seeing that with a many games I watch, not just the Met games. Don't know what it is…
awful offense. This lineup was supposed to be STACKED. instead its just a bunch of empty statistics.
Exactly.
This is going to be a .500 team unless something is done cause this team is not a plaoff team
Gnats only winning 3-2 in the 8th. With their crappy BP the Mets are going to be 5 games out. already.
And on that note, Marlins tied it.
He's STILL not as bad an in-game manager as Willie, but Jerry's now officially part of the conversation. It's like he flips a coin when confronted with a decision.
Jeez, the Wipon's have to be kicking themselves for not dishing out money and acquiring an RBI machine, ala Manny Ramierz. The team will finish in third if they can produce runs. This is sad. We should be 9-4 with the way the bullpen has been pitching and the number of runners we get on base per inning. It seems like Delgado has been the only one to step up and drive in runs!
how is it possible that reyes in on base 5 times in the last two days (once with a triple!) and not score a single run???!! could someone please tell dwright that he hits in the middle of the lineup, not to walk, but to drive in runs. we all appreciate all 4 rbi he has this season, but when he has almost 4x as many strikeouts, it's a little left to be desired. pick it up!
LOL so DW should start swinging at bad pitches too? He certainly hasn't been great, but I don't see how you can get on him for taking a walk when they aren't throwing him strikes
that's not the point, the point is for Dwright to stop striking out so much and to start driving in more runs. end of story.
No kidding he needs to drive in runs. But when somebody says "someone please tell dwright he hits in the middle of the lineup, not to walk,". That's moronic.
thank you. i see you understand the focus of my complaint has little to do with walks, and more to do with the lack of run production. nym712, figure out the sarcasm or leave the editorializing out.
He should watch tapes of himself in '05/'06. He would be so much more effective for this team if he stopped trying to hit 500 foot homeruns and went back to working the count and hitting the ball the other way.
He was better in 2007
David wright needs to focus on one thing and one thing only DRIVING IN RUNS!, and if that means hit a hr, fine hit a hr, but honestly if he drives in 130 idc if he hits 2 home runs, but in these big spots he;s gotta stop going for the quick 3 run fix, and just try to send the ball the other way for an rbi or 2.
And to answer the original question. Its happened b/c most of Reyes hits have been singles…he hasn't been stealing as often and the Mets have sucked with RISP when he does steal.
Anybody else feel that it's time to move Beltran up to 3 and Wright down to 5? Something needs to be shaken up, at least.
Sign me up for that.
I'm on board.
I'm 3.
i'm down
Listen, you can say what you want bout tatis not bunting, and yes it should have been a no-brainer, why force a player to get a hit with a risp, you might as well just place three outs on the board, but still this game, like all others this year has come down to hitting with risp.
Its rediculous! It seems like every time some1 is up in a big spot you can say to yourself "they will be fine unless (certain situation) happens." and what happens? that one and only situation that destroys the inning. And i'll cut delgado some slack because he seems like the only person on this team getting big hits.
Sure its just 12 games, but what have the mets shown me this year that will lead me to beleive 09 will be a different story? nothing! same team, same players, same garbage. Yeah we got this great pen, but what is it good for? how many times this year have out and k-rod been able to come in 8/9 and do what they were brought in to do? not so often.
Write your comment here…
I am sooo frustrated. What is going on? KL15 you are right. What is happening with baseball today. It is two men on and nobody out.
Tatis is up…Castillo is on the bench. He is an excellent bunter, and might even beat out a bunt. Why do you not bunt in the bottom of the eight innings, one run down? Jerry are you dense?
Ugghhh….also, not that I want to know but the Mets must have the highest LOB and RISP in the majors. How would I find out those stats? I checked but couldn't find out where they ranked.
Wright is simply afraid to be up there in a big spot. He gets his little cry baby face on. What an overrated waste.
I don't know, besides a 3run hr from Braun, he has done nothing all yr.
WHAT THE FRIG DO WE HAVE TO DO TO GET RUNNERS IN FROM SCORING POSITION !!!!
We need to do the following:
Switch Wright and Beltran.
Bat Castillo 2nd and Murphy 7th.
Also on a side note……Tatis needs more playing time.
I'm all for the Wright/Beltran move, not saying it would work but what is going on now certinaly isn't.
I like the idea about switching Castillo and Murph also. Both are getting their hits, getting on base. But Castillo is more of a table setter than Murphy and he's got more speed.
About switching Wright/Beltran – not sure about this one yet but if DWright's struggles continue, it's worth a try.
I really feel like I should be much more patient in April. It's getting really tough, though. It's early, but Wright looks like a throwaway player right now. I'm sure he'll get better, but will that be in the 3 hole? How many games does the offense need to be hushed before Manuel realizes it needs to be shuffled? When you get shut down by Suppan (granted the strike zone was erratic), you really need to take a good hard look at yourself.
And who the hell is this Omir kid? I was pretty impressed by his first (?) big league game.
Sure. Be patient. Now we are 5 games out. In two weeks it will be 8. Then 11 games, then 15 by the break. Then someone gets fired. We go on a tear. Catch the first place team on Labor Day. Go ahead by 3 games on the 15th, then SHUA again………….
Somebody make it stop.
Absolutely right about Murph and Castillo. Murphy's hitting style is more suited to RBI situations and Castillo's more suited to getting runners into scoring position. Flipping them would be a big improvement in my opinion.
I agree w/ fx. Did everyone forget the 80 pitch drill?
This is what happens when you basically bring back the same lineup from last year. A lineup, that while decent statistically showed little knack for getting hits when it counted. I'm not saying Manny should have been signed, but there were moves out there that would have changed the makeup of the lineup and maybe even challenge some these guys. I brought this up in the offseason and I remember being told to shut up because the offense was like 3rd in runs or something. My reply was, how many runs did they score in September? I don't remember hearing anything after that.
afternoon folks its time for the im pissed of at this loss on a sunday p.m edition of "this day in mets infamy with rusty " so lets get this over and done with – gotta see mt tat artist to add to my leg piece

this team is a bunch of bums.
Some teams find ways to win games… we finds ways NOT TO! Jerry has to get more aggressive on the bases… steal more, hit and run more… it feels like we just sit back and wait for the big home run which are not coming. And please Omar, can we get a real #2 starter.
Heres a fun fact. Bobby Abreu has more stolen bases this season than the entire New York Mets.
The thing that bothers me is, that the Mets continue to make Suppan look like a good pitcher, while the rest of the league has caught on that Suppan actually sucks. When will the Mets?
On a positive note, Figgy pitched a pretty good ball game. Only 5 hits with those 3 runs. Kept us in the game.
Um… the only way a pitcher can keep this team in the game is with a shutout
LOL. True.
I knew Figgy could do well against the Brew Crew. Where are all the critics now?
cubs game last year…enough said.
Does anyone else find it incredibly corny that although the post game post from yesterdays game wasnt on the site at all yesterday, matt posts it this morning and changes the date and time to make it seem that it was posted at 11:00 pm yesterday. And on top of that, he turns the comments off for that post because he knew he'd take a beating for it.
Right b/c no other star player has ever slumped before. The "face of the franchise" for every other team bats 1.000
I'm not asking for him to hit .1000 . I want him to be more succesful when the game is on the line. You can hit .300 all year and not be a factor, or you can hit .270 and be the MVP if you produce when it counts.
Last time I looked the purpose of the game is to score more runs than the other team. It's not happening this year, and Wright seems to be involved every time they fail. So….that being said….if you are the face of the franchise, you should really take it personally instead of giving lip service in the post game interviews.
I am sure sometime in the next 5 months Wright will go on a streak and kick butt for a time. The question is….will he do the SHUA thing again in September. Seems to me he is practicing now.
One more point…..if Wright made hard outs, I wouldn't be so pissed at him. I know it's a tiny sample, but look at Santos today…he smoked that ball, but it was a DP. No issue with that outcome.
Yeah, trade Wright and let Santos play third. He had more HRs in ST than Wright too. (sarcasm off)
LOL at Wright not taking it personally when the Mets lose. If anything I think he takes the losses too personally…he'd be better if he chilled out a bit and got over things quicker. He's always the guy saying he needs to play better, the team needs to play better, etc, its not like he acts like these games don't matter.
Well how about it? Late in the game, I play the odds, understand? I'm not crying about Sanos DP ball, that was bad luck you are right. But since I know nothing humor me for a minute, if there are runners on second and third and one out, that is whole new set of dynamics instead of man on first and third and one out. Now a deep fly could have at least tied the game at that point. See this is called small ball, I know it doesn't look as good on sportscenter but it gets wins. Something I don't see alot of with The New York Mets.
Meanwhile, the Marlins rally against the crappy Nats' pen (AGAIN) and are about to go 11-1. Say what you want about the Fish, but they've got some heart and some good young pitchers to go with it.
Yep and yep. I remember when The Mets had a little of that.
Their heart is that they are playing the worst team in MLB.
Also the played against the mets and beat them
The Mets gave them their only loss.
You guys with this heart crap. If you win people say you have heart. Simple as that.
The philthies lost the other day after a 7-1 lead, they're chokers! Oh wait, they came back against a team without their closer, they have heart!
Howard and victorino come up i a bi spot, and you know its a hit, david wright comes up and i think 'lets just hope he pops out so its not 2"
Yeah, just like Howard and Utley did during their 6 losses. Actually they didn't.
Yeah, Howard played like shit when his team needed him down the stretch last season and thats why his team missed out ont he playoffs.
Just like Wright did only Wright's bullpen let him down. Funny how Howard's and Utleys HRs meant nothing Saturday when Lidge blew the game.
Rollins hit his first HR today and raised his avg to .152. I guess he's a choker now? I guess he lost his heart.
You tend to get a longer leash when your coming off a ws championship year, then when you're the face of the team that just choked 2 years consecutively. Or maybe im just crazy.
Actually Rollins has been lousy for more than a year. But he talks alot and has you know, heart, so he's awesome.
He has a championship ring, so he's awesome.
So good root for the phillies then. They seem to be the team you like.
I honestly can't remember being so certain that runners in scoring position would NOT be knocked in. It kind of kills you a little inside. On the rare occasion they do manufacture a run it's a pleasant surprise, sure. But there is something inherently wrong with being shocked when they score as opposed to the other way around.
Should have explained better, I put that post up when Tatis was at bat. That's who I wanted to bunt.
6-6, while the fish are now 11-1
why can't this team have an 11-1 start, for once/?
OMG the Mets are actually wearing ….the actual Mets home unis.
C'mon Figgy, get out of this!
Yeah, no kidding.
I was so mad when they didn't wear the pinstripes for the 1st game in the new park.
honestly, these days, with all the unis, i don't know what the actual home and road uni is any more. so, not a big deal to me.
Perez / Maine / Livan against St. Louis. Oh boy. I hope they skip Livan and pitch Johan on turn. At least we'll be competitive one game. Livan can pitch out of the 'pen one day to stay sharp. Then Johan can pitch the middle game of the Marlins series. Maybe he won't match up with Johnson again.
I am sooo frustrated. What is going on? KL15 you are right. It is two men on and nobody out – bottom of the eighth. Castillo is on the Bench (best bunter on team and may get a hit). Jerry are dense?
Also, what do you think? Wright is too comfortable in the three hole, and is strking out too much the last couple of years (since the home run hitting contest). I love him but may be he will concentrate more if he is challenged and put in the five hole. Also, I think Murphy (although young) is a great hitter and should be in the three slot for righties.
Reyes, Castillo (hitting well so far), Murphy, Delgado, Wright, Beltran, Church, Castro/Schneider/Santos, pitcher
Lefty lineup (I know not great defensively
Reyes, Murphy, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Sheffield (RF), Tatis (2B), Castro/Santos
How about it?
kl15
Wright and Beltran- 5 & 6? Yuck.
And Wright's problems aren't lack of concentration, he's just not swinging the bat well right now. And he hasn't K'ed more often the past couple seasons than he did before the derby. He's struck out a ton this season, but its a small sample. His K per PA rate has actually gone down every year.
Manny would've had 20 RBI's by now. j/k Manny only has 7 while David has 4.
You sound just like me.
I said this before It's time to bat Wright in the 5th slot ……………… I guess Jerry will wait till we're something like 8 or 10 games out then he'll smell the java and make the switch.
I posted on Monday if we don't right our starting pitching we are going to find ourselves in an unequivical world of poop ……………………………………. stay tuned.
Good thing they didn't spend on that overrated Manny guy…
Hey Fred,
I BET MANNY AND LOWE ARE LOOKING MIGHTY GOOD ABOUT NOW ?
as long as I don't look like you :)
I understand the "focus" of your complaint, That doesn't mean the stupidity of your post shouldn't be addressed.
no you don't, and even after the explanation you still don't. otherwise, you wouldn't respond to the nonissue twice.
It was a silly comment. Yes he needs to drive in runs, but why not just say that? I don't see what is sarcastic or funny about a comment about how he shouldn't walk.
holy smoke. this is exhausting. i know it was silly! such was my intent, and i thought that was allowed. i understand now that it is not. didn't know it was like a composition class. won't happen again. just fact-supported simple statements: dwright needs to drive in more runs.
dont blame wright, dont blame jerry… the blame goes on Omar Minaya. He is just not a good GM! it seems that for the past 3 seasons we have watched more games than him. any of us could have realized for 3 straight years the mets never and i mean NEVER get the big hit this team lacks heart. manny ramirez was the answer this offseason he should have been the number one priority. he takes the preasure off wright and beltran and would have been the leader the mets need. the season is over its the same crap as every other year…
dont blame wright or jerry the blame all goes on Omar Minaya. It just seems like we have watched more games than him over the past 3 seasons and we know the mets will never get the big hit! this team lacks heart and minaya number one target should have been Manny Ramirez. this team needs a player like manny who can take the preasure off of wright and beltran and hit in the clutch. minaya is a horrible GM he runs out the same lineup for almost 3 straight seasons when we collpased due to the lack of hitting. we never hit. i have never seen a team who fail to get a hit with RISP more than this one. its an absolute disgrace
BUNT Jerry.. it's called a bunt… just awful
If its not pitching, the problem is hitting, if they;re hitting, their pitching is giving the runs back. Godo teams pick each other up (like santana did yesterday), however this team seems to let each other down as often as possible. you get this good performance from figeruo (however that is spelt) coming from the minors, and they can't even score two runs! I'm not even suprised anymore. i was listening on the radio and as soon as tatis wasn't bunting, i EXPECTED them to not bring in a run. i actually expected them to not be able to get 1 run with no outs and two on, and they fail to dissapoint. And its not like you can say "well if castillo played, or if he was on the team", because they;re putting themselves in the right spots. you want your big boppers up witht he game on the line, you want delgado up in that spot, you want wright up with risp, and when that keeps failing day in and day out, then you have gotta get some new boppers.
I'm really trying hard to defend DW but he makes it harder and harder these days. I hate it but I have no confidence when he comes up with RISP, I don't want to feel that way but he just hasn't instilled any confidence in his ability to get big hits right now. I'm amazing how they put 2 runners on every inning it seems like, and just no big hits. 6 losses and four by one run and two by two runs. These games have been right there for the taking and they haven't done it.
I think this is the year Johan posts a sub-1.00 ERA Modern day record is 0.96… I think this is very attainable.. Say he pitches 210 innings that would be only like 22 earned runs all season.
well, there is no chance they win this one…i have seen it all. still have to hang this one on jerry if they don't pull it out. sorry, you have to bunt there….
DAMN RIGHT!
Well how about it? Late in the game, I play the odds, understand? I'm not crying about Santos DP ball, that was bad luck you are right.
