Note: Where are the Gangstas?
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 22, 2009 6:49 pm

Jerry Manuel once said, “Ladies on the bus, Gangstas on the field,” and got Mets fans all fired up about his team potentially playing a harder, grittier brand of baseball.

Hey, Jerry, you know what would have been Gangsta?

Assuming he didn’t want to slide, instead of tap dancing around him, Carlos Beltran could have taken out Yadier Molina on the play at the plate yesterday.

I spent so much time today trying to understand Beltran’s post-game comment from last night – about not realizing he was so close to the plate – I forgot that he also could have impersonated Pete Rose and run in to Molina.

In other words, where are the Gangstas, Jerry?

damn matt cerrone’s got an edge !! lol but seriously matt it’s good to see a fire in your belly again – i appreciate it when you go off the mets f.o talking points and tell us your gut feelings on the situation – i just believe we can’t throw the baby out with the bath water – but i would mind seeing a few elbows thrown at catchers who block the plate

    • This would imply the Mets actually have talking points…

That said, if they do, I’ve never seen them, nor is any one allowed to push that type of crap on me – and I find it quite insulting that you think I would be that simple minded and dutiful.

      • lagranderusty10 says:

sorry matt didn’t mean to offend – no sarcasm here i’m like you i follow the team and wear my heart on my sleeve and i swallow the excuses and explanations that the team hand me (except for gooden gate) – i wasn’t implying that u are shilling for the team i think like me – you want to believe what the organization says – whether its spin or not

        • gipper82475 says:

Matt, I can get why you are defensive, as some commenters are horrible towards you (the silliness of objecting to you getting sponsorships, accusing you of shilling when your overall approach hasn’t changed since I first came upon this blog years ago) but Rusty is one of the good guys and, while he could have worded that comment better, is NOT the type of guy to get on your case – if fact, I think he was lauding you for speaking your mind rather than swallowing the “I was too close the plate” garbage.

          Wow…that was a run-on sentence.

          • lagranderusty10 says:

thanks gipper – sometimes i have diareah of the fingers and constipation of the brain – i meant it to be supportive of matt but i can see how it could be miscontrued – so once again matt my apologies – next gettogether i atten ill buy you a monty python holy grail ale :)

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

And whoa….I didn’t even remotely read Rusty’s comments the way Matt did – maybe b/c I read most comments on most posts everyday and I recognize the tone of the usual suspects – lol.

      • lagranderusty10 says:

thanks my dear – ive met matt and he is a great guy – verry accesable and down to earth like i said before i worded it incorectly – had i said it to him in person he might of understood the point i was trying to convey

  2. enut says:

Now that Castillo is back to form, is it possible to deal him and sign ODawg for next year?

  3. dave27 says:

Beltran…Molina….when was the last time they were involved prominently in the same game?

  4. GravediggerHebner says:

I may be mistaken, but weren’t they WBC teammates? Beltran has never been what I’d call “aggressive” but he seems even less likely to take out his teammate and fellow countryman. Another reason to be angry about the WBC I suppose.

  5. patrick says:

he should have slid, he should have had the on deck hitter reading and guiding the play too (nowhere to be found) but what you are asking for ended with Multi million dollar salaries.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I am more willing to forgive the on deck hitter on this play, considering it started with Beltran on 2nd, and unfolded so quickly. But I heartily agree that he should’ve at least slid, if not run into the catcher.

      • lagranderusty10 says:

just because beltran coulda scored – doesnt mean that reed woulda been inserted into lf and that play wouldnt of happened – one thing doesnt cancel out another – the cards still coulda scored 2 runs regardless

        • Tidewater says:

Yes, that’s true, but if Beltran scored the 8th inning continues and who’s to say that they wouldn’t have scored more?

          • lagranderusty10 says:

touche – but its like the old saying goes ” if ifs and buts were candies and nuts yadda yadda yadad”

        • patrick says:

not following what the Reed playing has to do with sliding or the on deck hitter instructing to slide, they may have lost the game but that does not change what SHOULD have happened

      • jamie says:

I have to agree. A guy I know recently criticised Beltran for not showing up in those situations, and I was all “naw, dawg, don’t be blinded by the hatin”. Way to get my back, Carlos.

But seriously, knowing all the injury risk, etc, etc, if Beltran had flattened molina there, a LOT of fans would’ve put aside all doubt about how great he is (and he is). Particularly because it was Yadier and the Cards. I wanted Beltran to crush him.

        • lagranderusty10 says:

sometimes guy’s have a concious and fearing for the other guys well being trumps all

  6. gregpomes says:

This day and age that won’t happen. The players are all friends and union brothers. There is no edge anymore in the game. Today catchers have no problem blocking the plate as they know a player isn’t going to charge into them.

    • lagranderusty10 says:

tell that to chase fruknutley – he will barrel through u and think nothing of it

  7. jimyager says:

This team is a bunch of over paid prima-donna’s. They don’t play hard, they don’t take the extra step or extra base and they act like they are affraid to upset or hurt the feelings of the teams they play against. They play like thay are the best and dont have to proove it. ENOUGH!! Plow him over, slide hard and play hard dont be worried if you get you uniform dirty or some dirt under your finger nails. This is baseball and you have to go for the throat when the other team is down. Look at the what the Indians did to the Yankees 22-4, that is what its about. Dont stop don’t let up and never be satisfied with the runs you have, always think MORE MORE MORE!!!!!

  8. zen says:

And that’s why Murphy is so important. He’s the only one who has Gansta potential in the line-up. Maybe Church too.

I think it’s one of the reasons that Mets fans are not in love with the team. Fans love guys like Lo Duca and Murphy. Who are into every pitch. Who are emotional (outwardly).

Reyes brought that energy for awhile, but something happened. Still a great player, but somethings different.

  9. JamesK says:

Hmm, Matt I’m all for hard nosed play, but that in posting that picture of Pete Rose you fail to mention that the guy he ran into (Ray Fosse) got severely injured and his playing ability limited the rest of his career. Who’s to say the same wouldn’t have happened to Beltran?

Let’s hope this Beltran slide doesn’t become a symbol or talking point everytime the Mets lose. He’s a great player who made a mental mistake. It happens. Not the first time, not the last time.

  10. lagranderusty10 says:

ok boyz und girls since nothing happened “this day in mets infamy” i figured i’d give “rusty’s met of the day” so here is our inaugural player uncle cliff

    Cliff Floyd
    Born: December 5, 1972
    at Chicago, Ill.
    Years with Mets: 2003 – 2006
    468 games. 81 hr, 273 rbi, 0.268
    242 runs, 32 stolen bases

  11. lagranderusty10 says:

ok guys cya later im goin to watch the pregame

  12. 911nafstem says:

The Mets are playing more like the Italian army than the Italian mafia

  13. gipper82475 says:

This team seems to be like 85% ladies, 15% gangstas. They need to reverse that.

    • lagranderusty10 says:

ok someone stop with the estrogen shots j/k

    • GravediggerHebner says:

At that rate, the 25 man roster has 4 gangstas. I wonder who they might be?

      Santana
      Putz
      KRod
      Sheffield?

I’d include Murphy but after seeing him play Wii tennis with Julie Alexandria, I just can’t.

      • lagranderusty10 says:

i think if he could razor shines would come out of retirement and hit lol

      • fxcarden says:

I think its 5…..Church……at least he honestly tries.

        • GravediggerHebner says:

I agree on Church. My hope in “doing the math” was to have other people post their “nominees” thus significantly increasing the team’s percentage of “gangstaness.” Alas, it seems to have failed.

      • bkfitz says:

        Did he fall playing that?

  14. Nealosaurus says:

I’m with Summers on this one… Beltran should have sat tonight. It was this kind of B.S. that contributed the anemic play of the last two Septembers. When are the Mets gonna get angry and play angry? And while I’m on the topic why does it seem like the bats feel they can take a day off when Santana’s pitching? Last two seasons came down to one game on the last day. We might have just given that game up last night. Or when Murph dropped the ball on Easter Sunday… or when…. the list goes on and on.

    • lagranderusty10 says:

ugh here we go again – the lunatic fringe !!

      • Nealosaurus says:

Thanks for that, Rusty. Thanks very much. Thought you were watching the pregame? lol Seriously though, what has this team shown you? What has led you to indicate that they are hungry for a championship? Razor Shines should be on the field every day, he’s got plenty of fire.

        • lagranderusty10 says:

yes he does and i had to come back to respond to your asinine comment

          • Nealosaurus says:

Just tell me why I’m wrong. Maybe you do have a good point, but I haven’t read it yet. Share!

          • lagranderusty10 says:

the team was hitting in august/ september it was the pen that was blowing it – big time

          • Nealosaurus says:

Ok, fair enough. But we were a .500 team to open the season, before Willie got canned. There were plenty of problems with the bats then. Could have used those wins too. And when Manuel came on it seemed like he actually fired the team up a bit. That effect seems to have waned.

          • lagranderusty10 says:

no doubt – if u read me on a daily basis u will see i blame that series against the padres in san diego and the pedro game against the pirates at shea for eliminating us from the playoffs – cuz those are 2 teams that werent trying and we sleep walked through those 2 series

          • Nealosaurus says:

            Well, uh… I’m not a lunatic! :-P

          • lagranderusty10 says:

i apologize man the fatcessa got me riled up lol

          • Nealosaurus says:

He’s good at that. And people seem to actually like that about him. I don’t get it… He was almost tolerable when dog was on the show but he’s too much on his own.

          • daved292 says:

i agree, bench them if they make a mistake. make the players realize that sloppy baseball will not be tolerated. for example, manny acta for the nationals. the bullpen sucked and what does he do? he sends down 4 guys and brings up 4 guys at once. completely new bullpen and the past 2 games played well. of course you can’t do that with position players but definitely bench them.

  15. reillys5 says:

    keep your head up murph

  16. fxcarden says:

    Totally off topic……..

The All Star balloting has or is about to begin. I just hope Met fans don’t vote for anybody except Johan unless they freaking earn the spot.

No popularity contests. Screw it…..these guys could probably use the rest anyway.

  17. j_k says:

Matt, you are amazingly defensive about all of this. People come to the blog because they like your work, you don’t have to worry about it.

    • lagranderusty10 says:

i dont blame matt for being irritated about this he is a fan like us and the frustration is mounting – but we all have to be POSITIVE !!!

    • jamie says:

where’s he being defensive? he’s voicing his opinion as a fan, just like you

  18. francois says:

Beltran didn’t/coudn’t slide hard into Molina, because they are Friends. These guys played on the Puerto Rican team together and play baseball as if it were Touch Football.
    pisses me off

  19. gottabelieve07 says:

You know what else would be gangsta, and would have helped the Mets have 3 more wins??

Not dropping balls hit to you in the OF.

It’s completely fair to get all over Beltran for his mistake last night, and you did so rightfully. But where’s the angry criticism of the dropped balls and losses caused by them?

You should be fair in your attacks.

  20. TrulyAmazin says:

This is the same type of thing that has been happening for 4 years. Underachieving team with zero heart and grit. Why do we continue to think that things will be different when we have the same group of core players? It’s the same garbage year after year, with this year being no exception.

They’ll make their run only to come up short once again. Bank on it…. Disgruntled and sick of this group of players…their pathetic with the King of pathetic Oliver Perez leading the charge. Signed to a long-term deal!! What a joke. Didn’t want a winner like Lowe…theguy has won 3 decisive playoff/WS games. Perez? Perez? Total joke.

  21. iluvbillbuckner says:

Henry Kissinger once said of the PLO what he could very easily have said of the NY Mets: “They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

  22. steve333 says:

Why should anyone be surprised? Same bunch of losers with the same bunch of loser attitudes with the same boring manager with the same inept GM with the same incompetent owners. Meet the Mets!
    Answers to problems:
    Fire Omar
    Replace Manuel with Wally Backman
Get rid of Castillo and put Murphy at 2nd
Put Wright somewhere else in the Batting Order
Trade Delgado and Maine or Perez (plus FMart) for someone who can actually pitch.
    Put Evans at 1st base.
    Dump Sheffield and Tatis.
Get Holliday from the As for LF.

    There ya go.

  23. Cactus says:

who cares about “gangsta” and bowling over catchers.

    how about “fundamentals”

the mets lack them. let’s keep this as simple as it is. there’s no reason not to slide there. the end.

  24. [...] Cerrone of MetsBlog is right on with his criticism of Jerry Manuel’s “gangstas”. It’s high time to see some ferocity on the field, Ray Knight [...]

  25. repeal the DH says:

The so-called “gangstas” in baseball went out when the big salaries came in. No one wants to get hurt because of all the money they make. The other side of the coin is that they also don’t want to hurt their opponent for fear of reprisal. Also, players are too friendly with their opponents before, and even more despicably, during the game. Players used to hate their opponents during the game as much as the fans still do now. I feel like throwing up every time I see someone like Reyes laughing with an opposing runner at 2nd base. Then I want to give him a quick kick in his back side. This is something that is prevalent throughout the sports world, not just the Mets.. Money has overcome competitive spirit and the all out desire to win.
