Links: Forbes, Kid, Doc, and Omens

by Regis Courtemanche on April 23rd, 2009 at 10:01 am

The New York Post notes how the Mets are second only to the Yankees on the Forbes list in terms of value, at $912 million – 13 percent above the $824 million last year.

…great, so will ticket prices become a little better now…

Also in the Post, Long Island Ducks Manager Gary Carter, says he is done lobbying for a managerial position. “I wasn’t trying to step on anyone’s toes or undermine anyone. My intentions were sincere, certainly not malicious by any means. I’ve learned from it. It won’t happen again. I’ll tell you that”, said Carter.

…i love carter, and it looks like he’s finally becoming a bit more media savvy…

Since Dwight Gooden has seemingly been everywhere lately, which is great to see, here’s more from him in a Q&A on YouTube where Doc answers questions from Brooklyn Met Fan, such as, “What is your favorite piece of memorabilia you have?”

Lastly, Metstradamus is looking for any omen to signify the awakening of the Mets, and is asking for your help.

…i don’t know where he comes up with this stuff, but i’m glad he does…

Quotes: Beltran, Wright and Maine, from last night

by Matthew Cerrone on April 23rd, 2009 at 9:10 am

Carlos Beltran, David Wright and John Maine talked to reporters from the clubhouse after last night’s loss, and said the following, according to SNY:

Beltran, on moving up to third from fifth in the batting order:

“Well, Jerry Manuel told me in spring training that we was going to be able to move the lineup around, and if he feels that way, my approach tomorrow will be the same as hitting fifth.  I don’t think just because you’re hitting third you have to do anything differently.  You just go out there and do the best you can.”

Wright, on the team’s offense in general:

“We’re in a tough spot right now.  We’re struggling a bit.  You know, we need to continue to put together some good at bats, and hopefully those line drives and hard ground balls start finding some holes and we can produce some runs… Jerry is the manager, I’ll hit where he tells me to hit.”

Maine, on his poor performance last night, during which he allowed five runs in five innings pitched:

“I’m a better pitcher than this.  I’m working hard between starts and I’m just not getting the results right now.  It’s gonna turn around, because a lot of times I’m making the pitches I want to make and I’m just hair off – once I get that I’ll be fine… I’m working hard.  I know I’m better than this, and it’s gonna turn around.”

Quotes: Jerry Manuel, about last night

by Matthew Cerrone on April 23rd, 2009 at 8:47 am

Last night, immediately after his team’s loss to the Cardinals, Jerry Manuel talked to reporters from the clubhouse, and had the following to say about…

The team’s poor starting pitching performances:

“Well, that’s been our Achilles heel so far, we haven’t gotten the starting pitching that we expected at this point… We have to get better in order to give ourselves a chance to win… It’s frustrating, not only for me, but for them as well and Dan Warthen.  These are things we are addressing… We can’t continue to pitch in this manner and expect to be champions of this division.  We’ve got to pitch a lot better than what we’re doing, it’s as simple as that…

“Every game is important, but what’s really important is that we play well and pitch well.  If we don’t get good pitching, if we go out and win the game 10–9, then we still have issues.  Eventually, we have to turn that around.  Our starting pitching has to be something we can depend on, and right now, other than Johan, for the most part, it’s been a struggle.”

John Maine, who allowed five runs in 5.2 innings last night:

“John looked like he had decent stuff, but the command is still somewhat of an issue.  He had control, but not quite the command.  I thought he made some good pitches there part of the game, but when he needed to he wasn’t able to get the big out.

Would he be switching up his lineup today had the team won last night:

“I like for everybody to get a chance to play… Alex Cora needs to get a start here and there, and Santos has played nicely for us and I’d like to see if he can continue to play well – and if he can, he’ll continue to play.  It’s that simple.”

His team’s offense, which is struggling to drive in runs:

“We still think we have a good offensive club.  I mean, we’ve shown that with the amount of hits we’ve got.  What we haven’t shown is the ability to get the two-out hit or the RBI.  The one thing Daniel Murphy is doing is he’s driving in those two-out RBI, and we’ve got to get other guys to do that.”
