Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes free-agent Pedro Martinez could sign a new contract within two weeks.
According to Rosenthal, “Interest in the free-
agent right-hander has intensified.”
…the Angels, Dodgers, Nationals and Rangers have all been linked in rumor to pedro…
However, as Rosenthal explains, “The Mets say they are not interested,” in Martinez.
…i bet the Nationals sign him… this is a total guess, but, it is reported they have the money, and he could help with attendance and drum up buzz for DC, which is a fairly stagnant organization these days…
In a post to Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam explains why the time has come for Omar Minaya to call Martinez.
Steve Popper of the Bergen Record discussed Martinez, and wonders, “What happens if Johan Santana loses tomorrow?”
By the way, if you have yet to do so,

Maybe a short season Pedro is exactly what he needs. I wouldn’t be totally against this. Think about it, Livan hopefully can get us one more decent start, maybe Redding gets us a handful and then Pedro could be ready for Late May-October.
There is much logic in your comment, but I can’t help but wonder if it simply would mean that Pedro would pull up lame 3 innings into his first start in late May as opposed to his first start in early April, thus being gone for full balance of the season as opposed to the possibility of a September comeback.
Now we need a shakeup but I doubt there is any budget at this point…
There is definitely budget. That’s why Omar specifically stated he did not want to make any other significant acquisitions after he signed Ollie.
Always keep some money in the bank for mid season…
We should toilet paper Madoff’s apartment.
If I were to venture a guess, many of the same people who will argue the Mets should bring back Pedro are probably the same ones who argue that this team is the same one from the last two years and needs to be broken up. Just saying…
What happens if Santana loses? How about we fire Manuel, Hojo, and Warthen and hire Leo Mazzone?
John Franco might make a good pitching coach…you never know
If nothing else, he could play the role of the mother from Joe’s Garage: “Turn that down!”
Just kidding, I think that story about Kazmir’s music in the locker room is bs.
Ooooh… Leo MAzzone… Tempting…
I sadly believe that HoJo’s days are numbered. The team IS hitting, just not getting the hits at key moments…
As for Warthen, I don’t think he’s got the track record to release him so soon…
Agreed on Warthen. He really did a good job with them late last season, especially with Pelf and Ollie (dare I say it).
However, I have a feeling if the rotation isn’t coming around within the next couple of weeks, his job will be on the line too.
season over
What Would Jesusmaramba Do?
Watch soccer i guess…
sorry to be negative, but it is…the team is dead in the water
season over
LOL
When was the last time a season was decided in April? Did the Phillies (8-10 on April 19) and Rays (8-11 on April 20) not get off to similar starts last season?
Also, the Phillies never had a record over .500 until APRIL 24…
the season is never “over” in April.
The season is never over in April except for the fact that this team is being consistent with their prior results of other seasons. Their toast.
First of all, it’s “they’re,” not their.
Secondly, they fell apart last season because of injuries and no bullpen. How can you actually predict the same thing will happen this season?
Look, I’m not one of those super-optimistic guys that thinks this team is fine the way it is, but IF the rotation shapes up just a TINY bit (Maine and Pelf turn it on again) this team will win some ballgames.
I think you WILL see a shakeup in the rotation this season, but it won’t be a trade. I expect to see Mr. Niese and Mr. Gee in NY by mid-June, if not earlier.
Will it work? Who knows, but if you’re going to have a staff full of 7.00+ ERA guys, why not let it be youngsters getting experience? At least they will give it their all…
In all fairness, they are losing games much like they did last year and the year before. You just knew going into yesterday that they weren’t going to avoid the sweep. I’m not sure if that’s just typical Mets fan pessimism or if it’s warranted. But they certainly haven’t looked like they have learned anything the past two seasons…simple things like – games in april and may are important too.
No, No, I agree they are losing games similar to last season…however, when the rotation did do well last season, they also lost those games because the bullpen stunk too.
All I was saying was that when the SP does well, we will win almost every time. The same can’t be said for last season.
If they were to re-sign Pedro (which they aren’t), the biggest impact would be on the clubhouse. If anybody connects with guys like Delgado/Reyes/Beltran it’s Pedro.
That being said, I don’t think he’d help our pitching situation much. He just doesn’t have it anymore. He wouldn’t have an ERA of 7.00, but then again anyone with common sense can expect both Maine and Pelfrey’s ERA to drop back below 4.10 or so by the end of May.
If Pedro will take a $1M contract, go for it. But I’m willing to bet that the Nationals are going to offer him more than that…
Ever realize that the team started to go downhill after Jose Valentin broke his leg in 2007?
I would not mind giving Pedro a shot at the #5 spot. Why not? He’s a proud man. Maybe he’s got something left.
I think Washington is already up 4-0.
You mean the “Natinals?” Ahahaha that was so embarrassing…
Ha…you saw that link?
Dude I saw that live on TV. I live in VA so I have MASN (sadly) in my area, and when I’m bored I’ll flip on the game to watch the circus show.
I was just chilling there watching the game and then was like, “Is his jersey missing an “O?” WTF…Dunn’s is TOO! HAHAHA!”
It was priceless.
CALL PEDRO! Lets get him long relief like he did in the WBC. If he does well, move him into a rotation spot. He looks like he can throw strikes. Nobody else can seem to do so.
If we wait until the deadline, we’ll actually be sellers and not buyers.
When is the last time you’ve seen a blockbuster trade in April?
I’m not jumping out the window. Just saying I’d rather try and shake it up now and not wait for mid season. Pedro can be had for money, the Mets don’t have to dump prospects to go get him. We can save that (if need be) for that blockbuster steal Omar has up his sleeve come the All Star Break.
Agreed to an extent…
I just never really like the thought of loading a younger team with old has-beens (Sheffield, Pedro, Tatis, etc.). Maybe it’s just me, but I’m all for young talent.
You see, the problem with signing guys like that is if your prospects do well in AAA, they have no place for them in NY. I mean, it’s early but I like what I’m seeing from F-Mart in Buffalo. I’ve watched about 7 or 8 games and he is really impressing me. But if we call him up, we then have a Yankees’ situation with 6 outfielders…
Same applies to Niese and Gee (even though they aren’t dazzling right now)…
If Johan loses tonight? Matt will have to install a ticket machine (like at the deli) for all the posters trying to get out onto the ledge to jump!
lmaooo
im sure it would run out of numbers loll
I’ve been trying to click the link to vote on the Fan Confidence rating since it was first put up earlier this morning. Every time I try, it only lists the votes and there is no option to actually vote.
Just wondering if it’s just me……
Clear out cookies in your browser and you should be fine.
Thanks for the reply. I actually tried that a couple of times. Tried it in both I.E. 7.0 and Firefox 3, but same result.
I guess if I got ambitious I could reboot…..
my money is on washington signing pedro…
I think Pedro wants to go to a contender, which eliminates Washington, Texas, and the Mets. I think he’ll be a Dodger. They don’t have any pitching whatsoever.
Manny and Pedro reunited?
Haha…good for the storylines, bad for the rotation. The Dodgers’ starting pitching has actually done quite well so far this season.
that may not necessarily be so..he already has a ring..he could pull a lowe. Pedro is a ego guy and may just settle for being the “ace” of a team.
It completely lacked subtlety, but nice shot at the Mets about not being contenders. But if that didn’t destroy your credibility, you completely lost it with “the Dodgers have no pitching whatsoever.”
Relax on the Mets not being contenders. Of course they are contenders. The season is almost three weeks old. I love playing into the doomsday scenarios on this site though. It’s fun and it really helps the sanity. I live and die with them as well.
As far as the Dodgers pitching staff, Hiroki Kuroda was their opening day starter. Clayton Kershaw is a young, albeit talented starter. Chad Billingsley is pitching very well. Based on stuff alone, I don’t know how that will be going for him in a month. Randy Wolf is Randy Wolf. I’m certain Eric Stults is going to keep it up. Their pitching, aside from Billingsley, Kershaw, and Broxton is not good. Hong Chi Kuo is good also.
Thank you for elaborating. I had taken your original post at face value. I still respectfully disagree about the Dodgers pitching though. I think with a healthy Kuroda, Billingsley Kershaw and Wolf they have 4 viable competent major league starters, and their bullpen is quite talented, the problem with it is that Joe Torre is managing it, therefore he will do everything in his power to destroy it.
I think that he still wants to be a Met, but wants to be “wanted”. If Pedro came back to the Mets now, he would have his chance to be the savior. I don’t think he would pass that up given the chance.
guys like pedro and randy want to be the best and im sure it bothers him the way he left ny and his performance there. I agree he may be willing to come back…but he will make it expensive becuase he is very stubborn and he has no real reason to drop his price. He knows he is heading into the HOF, he already has a ring…what more is there to do?
Does everyone remember last year,he couldn’t get anyone out.I was the game in Washington at the end of the year.He had nothing left, and couldn’t get Washington’s crappy hitters out.If we need to fix this rotation,do it right, don’t go with one of our own retreads.
Ok, since I’ve been reading comments about firing the staff, we’re going to get a little survey going here.
List your favorite candidates for each staff position-
Manager:
Pitching Coach:
Hitting Coach:
Bench Coach:
Manager: Mr. Met
Pitching Coach: My Sunday morning softball pitcher
Hitting Coach: Tony Soprano
Bench Coach: Forrest Gump
I got one better…
Hitting Coach: Chris Brown
Hitting Coach: Minnie Mendoza
lmaooooooo!!!!
lolllll
that so wrong but a good one dwright loll
I know, but at least he didn’t use an umbrella…that would’ve been sooo ironic
Manager: Bobby Valentine
Pitching Coach: Anyone Bobby V wants
Hitting Coach: Anyone Bobby V wants
Bench Coach: Anyone Bobby V wants
Manager: Bobby V.
Pitching Coach: Bob Apodaca
Hitting Coach: Teflon HoJo
Bench Coach: Julio Franco
Bobby V is an interesting choice, especially with that idiot Steve Phillips out of the picture. He and Jim Duquette absolutely ruined this team…
Think we can trade Ollie (Zambrano) for Kazmir?
Only if Duquette was the GM for Tampa
Jerry Manuel
Ron Darling
Keith Hernandez
Mike Piazza
Well, there goes our star-studded broadcast team, lol…
It would really be funny if we did that, then hired Gary Carter to replace K-Hern in the booth. Talk about SLAP.
I would not be happy about their loss in the booth, but if it improved the team on the field, it would be worth it. Seriously though I can’t imagine Hernandez having the patience and giving up the time necessary to do it. Piazza was quoted during the WBC as saying that once his children are older (vague I know) he would like to return to baseball in a coaching/managing capacity.
Why can’t the Metsblog comments section flow logically and chronologically top to bottom like it used to?
Ask and you shall recieve.
The mets suck. bring back Valentine NOW!!!! seriously if we do not bring back Valentine it means we are not dedicated to winning and so I will not attend nor watch a single game until he is hired. Everyone thinks they have a freaking answer to their problems. THE ANSWER IS BOBBY V!
I’ll tell you what – there would be no loafing in the dugout or on the field if Bobby V. was the manager. We either need that or for Jerry to become gangsta again.
i have to say – i don’t hate manuel but Bobby V coming back would be amazing. Just seems like a perfect fit for this team and New York…almost how Riley seemed like a perfect fit for the Knicks in the 90s. If Manuel fails then I would hope they respond with somebody with a little more fire and toughness, which Valentine obviously has.
I hate the idea of hiring back fired managers.
Reminds me of the joke that was the Billy Martin revolving door….
If I remember correctly (I may not because I was really young) Bobby V was fired due to indifferences with Steve Phillips, who gave him the WORST team to field. At least this team Omar put together has talent and youth (**ducks thrown objects**)
I couldnt agree more dude
Didn’t you already post this?
How many managers does one GM get? If this team continues to struggle, it’s on Minaya, not Manuel. Manuel proved last year he can lead a team – Minaya has yet to prove he can put a winner together.
Can we all take a step back and look at this team historically (that includes you too Mr Wilpon)?? Ok so in the 90’s we had two teams in the NL East that were competative for a majority of the years…Mets and Braves, managed by Bobby V and Bobby Cox. Now i know its hard to compare the two because Cox won a WS and Bobby V didnt but both were very succesful yet one still remains with the team and the other gets no respect. Is it really that hard to stick with a good thing. Why did we fire Bobby V?? Because Steve Phillips, the best GM ever but doesnt have a job in the MLB, fired him because he couldnt fire himself. BRING BACK BOBBY V AND GET OVER YOURSELF MET MANAGEMENT!!!
Hey more humor, this is great. It helps on days like this. Lets praise another average guy. Hmmm, yeah Livan. Yeah Trax, yeah Cito Gaston.
if livan has another bad outing, call up niese and release him. at least there is upside in him. and we got to give pelfrey 2-3 more starts. ollie cant be sent down and maine is the last guy this team would send down.
Pelfrey is going nowhere. He has made two starts this year. You can’t demote a guy because of two bad starts after a very good season last year.
thats what i meant, pelfrey isnt going anywhere anytime soon.
you said 2-3 more starts. he isn’t going anywhere this year. there is nobody in the minors who presents a better option, even if pelfrey is only at 50% of what we can expect from him.
what? if he has a 5.00 ERA in june, you would still keep him in the majors rather than send him down to work on things?
Depends on who we got. Right now Niese has an ERA of about 10. Like that’s going to help.
Yeah I agree. That might not fair too well on his confidence considering what the Mets have put him through so far. If there is anyone on this team the Mets have to ride out, it’s Pelf.
Maine and Ollie, on the other hand, are NOT safe in NY if they continue to struggle. Maine may stay in the BP, but Ollie will be on a flight to Buffalo faster that you can say “$36 Million”
I would make Ollie “walk” to Buffalo.
What we are forgeting is he does not have to go.
Which is the problem with the whole system; the players have too much power.
If my boss demoted me and I told him “No,” I’d be fired in a heartbeat. The sports world is so bass-ackwards
perhaps if we switch all the signage on the highways to buffalo to say NYC and visa versa. he would end up in buffalo and knowing him, be clueless to that fact.
Perez is not going anywhere either unless he agrees to it. Don’t see it happening.
It’s too bad there isn’t a “Kiss my ass, Ollie” clause in his contract
Instead of throwing the first pitch, lets sign her and put her on the hill sunday.

Why would Pedro opt for the worst team in baseball?
The same reason he opted for the Mets a few years ago…money
Of course money talks, but the Nationals have zero chance of winning. At least the Mets had the resources to start winning.
Pedro has won already. I think at this point in his career, he just wants attention and he wants to pitch. DC has both…
People in DC are paying attention to Pedro?
Possibley for the same reason he choose a below .450 team in the 2004-05 off season?
$$$
If Johan loses tonight it will be because of un-clutch hitting and crappy D, not because of his lack of effort.
the boys did put up runs yesterday on a lot of hits in that god awful pitching performance. if that trend continues today, Santana will get W #3.
To borrow my Ollie phrase.
No Whammy, No Whammy, No Pedro, STOP.
Can we all take a step back and look at this team historically (that includes you too Mr Wilpon)?? Ok so in the 90’s we had two teams in the NL East that were competative for a majority of the years…Mets and Braves, managed by Bobby V and Bobby Cox. BRING BACK BOBBY V AND GET OVER YOURSELF MET MANAGEMENT!!!
Oh and hire Bobby V
HIRE A REAL MANAGER – BOBBY VALENTINE
Bobby is too happy coaching in Japan.
Why would he want to come back to this mess?
IIRC, he’s not returning as manager in Japan.
He’s still on the Marines website as manager this season.
If we lose tonight, I’ll be depressed.
trade murphy neise and Maine for Halladay or Peavy
Figures that a guy who makes 100 post for an average manager that got ran out of town to never coach in the majors again, would also come up with about half of what it would take to get either of those.
dude you are way too bitter, seriously relax.
Me relax? You have made over 50 post saying the exact same thing. It’s not going to happen nor should it.
HIRE BOBBY V!
SIGN MANNY!
SIGN PEDRO!
Hey, that IS fun!!
Ugh, Pedro…..yeah, that should be great, as he is sure not to tax the pen and sure to go out for 6 or 7 innings each time out….
Just say NO to Pedro. And say it loud…..
Agreed, is there really ANY hope that he would be better? How does he help us at all? Perez will not accept a demotion and there is no way I want Pedro instead of Maine or Pelfrey. So the only way you get another starter is IF they are clearly better than Livan.
It will take Pedro 2 weeks to get here. He will make 5 starts before landing on the DL.
There’s no point in wasting any more money on him. If he were willing to sign for $400K (since he got more than enough money from us before), that’s one thing. $5M is too much for a guy who barely gave us anything in his last contract.
Agreed, Pedro would not be ready before Redding or Garcia.
NO PEDRO!! How many aging overpaid veterans do we need to pitch a whopping 5 innings? Hernandez, Redding, Freddie Garcia and maybe Pedro? Save your money for Peavy or Oswalt when they become available.
I love Pedro, but he’s done. Who wants another season of a few starts then hoping he’ll come back?
I’d rather go with the healthy, mediocre rotation than that. Of course, fans screamed for a #2 in the offseason, but why address a problem right away when you can waste half a season.
What happened to Oliver Perez’s bow that he did from the windup? That seemed to work for him for a few starts..
Anyways this is my theory… Oliver Perez needs something new in his delivery every 4 games. It keeps his head on his mechanics and focused. So Warthen can come up with small changes that Perez can perform every few starts I think it will help his mind stay focused and confident. Sure its a gimmick but Oliver needs gimmick to keep is mind occupied.
I have a similar situation with my golf swing. When I find a new lesson that changes its position slightly I find my mind/body become more focused and I swing better. I may not be explaining the way I like but I think you guys get the idea.
You have to keep him always working on something new.
I believe that Pedro, who is a true champion, does indeed have something left in the tank. I believe that he believes it, and is determined to try to improve upon the impression left over the last two years. He can still throw strikes, and has tons of the kind of guile that made Glavine successful through his late 30’s. I would sign Pedro now. Our rotation is a disaster. I believe he can only help the situation.
