Post-game: Nationals 8, Mets 1
By Ted Berg - Apr 26, 2009 5:01 pm

The Nationals beat the Mets, 8-1, at Citi Field this afternoon. Washington improved to 4-13 with the win while the Mets fell to 8-10.

For a full recap and boxscore, go here.

The least you should know:

  • Oliver Perez couldn’t get out of the fifth, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Afterwards, Jerry Manuel admitted he’s concerned about his pitcher, saying he hasn’t seen Perez’s good stuff yet.
  • Daniel Murphy fell down again in left field in the top of the second inning, but later made a nice running grab near the foul line and a leaping catch at the wall.
  • David Wright struck out three times and made a throwing error in the middle of Ollie’s fifth-inning meltdown.

Random Thoughts:

  • Oof.
  • The Mets did not hit, pitch, run or defend well today.
  • Citi Field fans mildly booed Wright after his first two strikeouts and heartily booed him after his third. Wright is now hitting .270 with a .370 on-base percentage, .371 slugging and 23 strikeouts. After 18 games in 2007, Wright was hitting .261 with a .363 OBP, .333 SLG and 20 Ks.
  • Murphy was booed a little, too, in his first at-bat after the tumble.
  • Carlos Beltran got caught stealing when he didn’t slide going into second in the bottom of the third. According to Manuel, Beltran thought he heard the bat make contact with the ball.
  • Young Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann looked strong, allowing six hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings while fanning five. Carlos Delgado’s triple off Justin Maxwell’s glove was the only extra-base hit Zimmermann allowed.
  • After Zimmermann spent a long half-inning watching Ollie and Casey Fossum struggle in the top of the 5th, the Mets got the first two batters on base in the bottom of the frame. Then Murphy popped out, Beltran struck out and Delgado fouled out.
  • Fans at Citi Field have taken to throwing the ball back when opposing players hit home runs, like at Wrigley Field.
  • The sweet and sour chicken fingers available in left field are pretty tasty, plus they come with the red plastic Nathan’s bident (like a trident, but with two prongs). They’re a little gooey to eat without a fork and knife, though.

The Game Ball:

  • The game ball gets hurled back onto the field in disgust.

Oliver Perez and Daniel Murphy to any team for a rosin bag.

    • tullydew says:

And we will throw in Wright for some pine tar!

      • alex.243 says:

i am all for it… trade opur 3 baseman for halladay or pavey before is too late..

        • fxcarden says:

Never happen. The Mets hang on to players until they are worthless, and then trade them.

The only exceptions I can think of are Seaver, Doc, and Straw, and that was done out of spite.

          • alex.243 says:

lmao.. man, we are gonna sign u to the CORE.. me and amazing mets aka mrBill are looking to recruit ppl..

          • fxcarden says:

I don’t know what that means, but if it fixes the Mets, I’m down.

          • alex.243 says:

jajaja, the core is a group of realistic fans.. not bias ones..

          • fxcarden says:

            Where do I sign ?.

          • CannonBoy13 says:

Count me in for the core.

          • alex.243 says:

JAJAJA, bro, you are in.. as long as u keep it real and go against the likes of TRS86 and WANNY is all good.. lol jk

Count me in for the core

cannon and FX, u guys are in.. wherever u see “AMAZING METS” pay ur dues.. he’s the co-founder of the CORE…

          • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

this team will be lucky if they even gets a chance to choke it away in september again, if you need more realistic fans to shoot down the “its still early” crowd, count me in.

          • SlappyMcHomerton says:

yes sir, u got that right. i mean, wheeeeeeeee mets rule, we won 2 outta 3, we’re fine, its early, relax,.
i’m signing up to be in the CORE as well

          • Deadpanwalking says:

Internal partisan politics developing among fans of a baseball team? Yeah, that’ll go over well. You guys need a hobby.

    • why not SIT WRIGHT, and PLAY MURPHY AT THIRD?

it’s all about posters and endorsements?

  2. ProudMetFan says:

    Oliver Perez = EPIC FAIL

  3. ProudMetFan says:

Good excuse for not sliding Carlos.

  4. NYMetsTalk says:

Mets DFA Fossum.. Bart Hubbuch believes Ollie could be headed to the pen, i highly doubt it… i bet they call up a different reliever.. perhaps they call up the japanese veteran lhp takahashi who has been great in AAA, he could actually start too (he was in japan) but he wasn’t a starter in AAA.. just speculation, but Fossum has been DFA’d.

  5. fxcarden says:

I’ve never “not cared” this early in a season.

This is going to be bad.

I hope the Yankees suck too. At least that will cushion the blow.

  6. ProudMetFan says:

LOL at the game ball Ted

  7. Wayneo says:

I know it’s still early in the season but I think its time to start questioning Omar’s performance. Again.

  8. ccmetfan says:

Damn, my Mets get blown out, my NY Redbulls blow a 2-1 lead and lose 3-2 with about 10 mins left, and I still gotta finish my college hw in this hot dreary day.

  9. MetsFanTX says:

Best part of today’s game – The bident.

    • SlappyMcHomerton says:

i’m personally sick of hearing about “the Food” at this field. prob b/c the team gives me “that Gaaaas”

  10. bucknersankles says:

If you want to blame someone for the resigning of Oliver Perez look no further than Fred Wilpon, he’s the one whe had
    A) No interest in signing Manny Ramirez
    B) No interest in giving Lowe an extra year with more money.
I’m tired of hearing “it’s Omar’s fault” the FACT is, owenership had already made up their collective mind subsequently tying Omar’s hands.

    • fxcarden says:

      It was Jeff…..not Fred.

      However, like father like son.

They should sell the team. I hear Reggie Jackson wants to own a team. He’s a minority. The Wilpons are so into the whole minority thing, why not give Reggie a shot.

      • tullydew says:

They would but he isnt a Dodger

      • SlappyMcHomerton says:

we will never win it all under wilpon’s sole ownership, unless a slow roller up 1st base goes between someone’s legs again

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

we will not win with the wilpons and they will never sell the team not after having just built their dodger museum.

  11. alex.243 says:

oliver perez and david wright to the padres for peavy and kousmanoff… DONE..

    • fxcarden says:

You’ll need to throw in Fossum.

      He’s a deal breaker.

      • alex.243 says:

jajajaja, fossum is pitching good. irather him start a game than oliver at this point.. and where’s our off season acquisiton tim redding???

        • fxcarden says:

Redding is serving burgers at the Shake Shack.

          • alex.243 says:

lol, another great job by our genious GM.. let’s give him another 3 year extension.. and what kills me is ppl here actually critixize phillips.. the only GM who actually build a team who got to the playoffs 2 years straight and to the WS..

          • fxcarden says:

            Damn right.

          • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

not to mention phillips drafted wright. he wasnt the best GM but he had more success than omar so far.

    • reillys5 says:

your an idiot ..wow …all new low for you..

    • steve333 says:

Peavey and Adrian Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff
for Wright, Delgado (eat his contract) , Perez (eat his contract).and FMart.

      • steve333 says:

oops, didn’t mean to include Wright.
He’ll be alright, he just needs some days off (Manuel rests everyone but Jose and Wright-just like willie). He also needs some protection in the lineup.
Murphy needs to play 2nd base.

        • wladair says:

Wright is working hard at coming out of his funk and Jerry knows this the same way that Willie did, so i don’t think he will be resting him unless he is the one that says “i need a break” which would be doubtful

  12. Dirtysanchez says:

    lol @ gameball

Eh…it was an ugly one…gotta shake it off and get the marlins tomorrow

    • fxcarden says:

Dirty, are you pitching tomorrow ?.

    • wladair says:

exactly, it was an ugly loss, tomorrow’s another day

      • SlappyMcHomerton says:

wake up, this team is and has been shot/washed up since 07.

        • wladair says:

either you are a fan or you’re not, if you are you have faith that your team will come back and fight the long battle. If you are not, then you’re not, but don’t pass yourself off as one if you can’t find anything decent to say.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

either you got it or you dont and this team has not had “it” since game 6 of the 2006 NLCS.

  13. docgoodens8ball says:

Another chance the Mets blow to pick up a game in the standings. These guys just don’t seem to care. Perez is garbage. I’m glad I had to leave the house when the Mets were winning 1-0.

    • alex.243 says:

I’m glad I had to leave the house when the Mets were winning 1-0″

lol, is BBQ day!!! too hot to get upset, i did the same…

  14. 911nafstem says:

I give up on Perez. I’ve always defended him, thought the Mets should re-sign him, but enough, he is a spineless pile of sht.

  15. dominicanboy08 says:

so who gets call up? niese to start against the phillies?

  16. NYMetsTalk says:

    Takahashi promoted. I WIN.

  17. chavez06 says:

Perhaps still a chance we can salvage this year and at least get a wild card spot. 1) fire HoJo and get a real hitting instructor. 2) trade Maine (wish we could deal Perez, but who would want him), Niese, and a lower level pitching prospect for Erik Bedard (he’s leaving at the end of this year any way… so, SEA might be open to getting a #5 starter, and two ptiching prospects. 3) Let Parnell start (can’t be worse than Ollie) and send Ollie to the minors get straightened out.

    • fxcarden says:

      I don’t know about Beddard, I hear he’s a clubhouse cancer.

      • alex.243 says:

the ? would be what u rather have at this point a cancer who’s gonna pitch good or a happy camper who’s a choke artist??

    • NYMetsTalk says:

i really dont think Parnell will help.. he throws like 90% fastballs while occasionally mixing in that mid-80s breaking ball. His starts wouldn’t last long b/c he doesn’t have an out pitch and hes certainly not gonna just blow away everyone with his fastball at this level as a starter.

      • fxcarden says:

But at least he’s not Oliver Perez.

      • chavez06 says:

may be what this clubhouse need someone like Bedard to wake them up a bit… I think the Pads wants the the team’s entire farm system for Peavy. I agree, NYMetsTalk… Parnell is much like Maine and Stokes has the same problem. So, do we bring up Gee?… he’s not doing too well in AAA. We need a decent #4 to have any chance.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

maine definitely has value and im all for trading him for an upgrade in the rotation. I would be shocked if maine niese maybe murphy or fmart and some other lesser prospects couldnt get us one of the BIG name pitchers (halladay, oswalt, peavy)

  18. LIMetfan74 says:

Hello Huston Who would you like for Ozwalt???

    • alex.243 says:

Hello Huston Who would you like for Ozwalt???”

      DAVID WRIGHT..
omar: ” throw in ty will and we got a deal
      HOUSTON: “DONE!!!!”….

      • Sylar says:

        You’re an idiot

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Alex is a man obsessed with trading DWright, to say the least.
          Wow, just….wow……

      • SlappyMcHomerton says:

DAVE is so lame it hurts. i’d trade anyone not named santana for premium prospects and build a 90-something win team for 2011-2012, rather than have to watch 87 wins, 85 wins, 78 wins til then, when we will be even worse

      • LGNYM says:

Your stupidity is made even more stupid by the fact that Ty isn’t on the Astros anymore.

And if Houston was actually dumb enough to think they could get Wright in a trade for Oswalt the phone call would go more like this…

Omar: What would it take to get Roy Oswalt?
        Houston: David Wright
        Omar: **hangs up**

  19. Midtown says:

Well at least we’re blowing games in the first 5 innings instead of the last 2 innings this year, right?

    • alex.243 says:

      LOL…

    • fxcarden says:

      There’s optimism for ya.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

yea I guess Omar forgot there are 21 outs to get BEFORE putz and krod can come in, oh and you also need to out score the other team to set up saves. one of these days maybe omar will have a complete offseason.

      • SlappyMcHomerton says:

Omar seriously would be a great poltician. He sells that Snake Oil like a champ

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

im getting sick of his bs in interviews with sny, francessa etc the guy is doing a bad job, he has the 2nd highest payroll in the game and cant even put together a playoff team

          • wrightstuff08 says:

guys, this is all on Omar!!! He screwed around way too long to sign Lowe and look what happened. He did this on purpose because he favored Perez. BIG MISTAKE. Also, i remember when Vazquez was on the trade market and Omar was not interested in him. He looks pretty good so far with the Braves and would be a huge upgrade over Ollie or Maine.

  20. Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

Lol Just remember that Ollie has tremendous upside. Now just incase you forget it I will probably repeat it at least once in each of the next 3 years.

  21. QnsNative718 says:

I was a huge advocate for resigning Dizzy Perez. The term “basket case” doesnt describe him well. So let me understand this… We got Santana to stop losing streaks and we got OP… to start em!!!

    • fxcarden says:

What we needed was a second stud in the #3 slot so that losing streaks are kept to a minimum.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

we also needed a power hitting RH bat that can play the outfield. its too bad there were none available this offseason…oh wait.

        • i think tatis will move into a platoon with murph within a couple of days if his poor fielding continues

          • davethenjmetsfan says:

Yeah, where’s Tatis???? The Mets came back last year due in a large part because of Tater, and this is the thanks he gets, sitting while Sheffield plays? Disgrace!

  22. Thank god we didn’t sign Lowe, what a mistake that would have been.

  23. was at todays game – little summary
bad ollie showed up. bad casey showed up bad jose showed up bad beltran showed up bad david showed up and bad danny showed up

    • wladair says:

sorry to hear you had to witness that ugly loss, Ollie always sucks against inferior teams, he gets bored. Bad baserunning by Beltran but his excuses are far worse. David’s in one of his April slumps, he hit rock bottom today, there’s only one direction to go….up. And Danny boy is reason for concern but i think he’ll be fine.

    • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

I used to go out to Big Shea when it first opened and if the Mets were even close in a game we considered it a victory. But we had fun and I’m sure even with the Mets play today you had a good time.

  24. i guess we wil not be bringin up figgy again
    as per mlbtr
According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets designated Casey Fossum for assignment after Sunday’s 8-1 loss to the Nationals. Fossum gave up 4 hits and 1 run and notched 4 strikeouts in 3.3 innings of relief this year for the Mets.

The Mets have called up lefthander Ken Takahashi to take Fossum’s place. The 40-year-old Takahashi has a 0.77 ERA in six appearances for Triple-A Buffalo.

  25. HildiMets says:

I was at the game and they played like shitte.

    1) That is a bogus statement by Beltran that he thought he heard that the bat hit the ball as he didn’t slide when he was caught stealing. There is something wrong with his knees. Either he is afraid to slide or his knees are barking. Everyone slides…this is just another reason to think that he is still hurting in his knees.

    2) Ollie Perez needs to be sent down. the guy has no set delivery he varies it from inning to inning, pitch to pitch. We should have gotten Lowe.

    3) The Team has no grit or toughness. they are too Polite. At a play at the plate you either slide or bowl the catcher over. This team is afraid of contact. Basically, they are not tough nor gritty.

    4) At this rate we will end up 80-82 and some heads will roll.

    5) This offseason, we need starting pitching. At best we have two good pitchers (Santana and Pelfrey). Maine, Perez and Hernandez are 5th Starters on most good teams.

    6) Citifield while nice and modern seems like a tribute to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Its kind of insulting. My wife put it best that the stadium looks generic like any team can come in and claim it as there own. No Homefield advantage there at all.

    7) The players look uninspired. Even David Wright looks bored.

    HM

    • i think the jose base running blunder was bigger in comparison – talk about not having your head in the game – they mightve been able to score some runs early and give ollie a bigger cushion

    • Sylar says:

      Grit and toughness mean nothing.

      • QnsNative718 says:

I completely disagree. “Grit and toughness” will more than likely allow a team to play inspired baseball. This team is uninspired, so therefore we will be an 80 win team.

        • sylar is right but u know beltran needs to show some passion – christ

        • fxcarden says:

          75

        • Sylar says:

If the team doesn’t hit or pitch well, then all the inspiration, guts, toughness, or whatever b.s. cliche you want to spit does NOTHING.

          • QnsNative718 says:

Over a course of a 162 game season, an inspired team with balls aka grit will fair better than a bunch of spineless, pretty boy nice guys. Guys who play the game with PASSION will barrell into a catcher who is in his way. In other words, THEY WILL TAKE CHANCES. Baseball is the one game where mental toughness is key. When guys are frazzled easily, they fold under pressure.

          • SlappyMcHomerton says:

this team shows the complete opposite of Balls when there are RISP, or when they need to make a big pitch, or a big play of any sort. they shrivel up like a shrode in a cold pool, and you, me, rusty, skylar and everyone else knows it.

    • QnsNative718 says:

Oliver Perez made the Nationals look like the Big Red Machine. After his outing last week, I refused to watch any games where he pitches. My heart will thank me for it.

      • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

Sometime during this summer Ollie will run off 5 or 6 brilliantly pitched games and we will once again proclaim that he has arrived only to see him once again follow it with a period similar to today’s performance.

    • wladair says:

If Beltran’s knees are bothering him, he should admit it rather than let people believe he is lazy and lying to save the embarrassment. There is nothing to be ashamed about if the injury is legitimate, the fact that he keeps making lame excuses ruins his credibility.

Let Jeremy Reed start in centerfield if Beltran needs a day or two rest, no harm in that.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Beltran’s knees are not bothering him. He’s got a tight quad.

        • wladair says:

I have heard conflicting reports about that, either way, if you are injured be honest about it rather than lie and expect people to believe you are that lazy and careless.

    • steve333 says:

Thats why I keep saying we need a Manager like Wally Backman-he will get this team to play hard and care about winning.
First we need to drop losers like Delgado, Castillo, and I would dump any fossils like tatis.
      Go young, aggressive, and tough.
Omar needs to be canned of course.

  26. fxcarden says:

I know people will comment that “it’s a long season”…….”it’s still early”……..blah blah blah

Let’s face it…..this team has been built as a “win now” team. It’s been that way since 2006 when they almost actually did it.

Putting aside the 2007 and 2008 debacles, this is what I see for 2009.

Starting pitching is non-existent outside of Johan. I suposse we can all agree that if he goes down, we’re done. I just hope at least 2 of the other 4 can have quality seasons.

Bullpen is good, but they will all be cooked from overuse by July.

Lineup has holes big time. Unless the face of the franchise starts hitting in the clutch, we are done. I hate to be hard on David, but if you’re going to go around being “the face”, you need to produce, or stop being the “goto” guy for the media.

We do not have a left fielder.

We do not have a single catcher with any quality whatsoever. What we have is 4 guys that can squat without giving themselves a hernia.

Our 1st baseman is old. Sure, he had a dynamite second half last year. I hope that wasn’t the old “dead cat bounce”.

Our 2nd baseman is looking better, but let me see you do it for 3 months straight. For now, I’ll give Luis a pass.

Our bench is adequate, if Manuel uses it wisely. Sheff should be primarily a PH, and Tatis need to get time at 1st, 3rd, LF, and RF when appropriate.

Our GM should be burning up the phone lines right now. If he isn’t, then he should be fired. He put this team together. He needs to get us out of this. I don’t wanna see any more Luis Ayalas come this way. We need quality, and we need it now. If that means you empty the farm system, so be it. You can always restock.

    OK. I feel better now.

    • ok so yesterdays performance from pelf was adequate?

      • fxcarden says:

If you want to call 5.2 innings / 2 ER / 3BB / only 1 K against the worst team in baseball adequate, then yes, it was.

Clearly the Cy Young isn’t far for Pelf.

Then again, compared to OP, Pelf IS Cy Young.

        • have u forgotten the kid didnt pitch in over a week and one of the runs was part of the botch job murph did in lf?

          • fxcarden says:

Let me see it do it to the Phillies, and I’ll jump on the bandwagon. Until now, all I have seen is “lick, lick, lick”……ball one……”lick, lick, lick”….ball two…..

To give credit where credit is due, he did get a lot of ground balls last night, which is a huge positive sign….but again…it was the Nats.

I am rooting for him, but I’m not going crazy until he shows me more.

          • damn i would of loved to see u in 73 when the team won the pennant with a 83 and 79 record

          • fxcarden says:

Funny you bring up ‘73 because that is the reason I am a Mets fan. I came to this country in 1973, and my uncle was a huge Mets fan. Until I came here, I never even heard about the Mets. All I knew was the Yankees, Giants, etc. My uncle educated me and turned me into a Mets fan. I started going to Shea in 1974 and never looked back. Lived and died with every game since then. Been to spring training, seen them on the road in places near and far from home. Planned vacations around their schedule as a matter of fact. Always wore the colors with pride.

My son was born in 1986. He grew up just like me….rooting for this team. He has never seen them win. First it was the wars with the Braves in the 90’s, then, a major letdown in 2006, and then positively crushed in 2007 and 2008.

If you want me to cut this team a break, it ain’t gonna happen because I demand better from this team. If the payroll was 40 million and the prices were reasonable, I would cut them some slack, but once they made the decision to compete with the rest of the world, and in particular with the other team in town, they DO NOT get the benefit of the doubt from me. Don’t pretend to be a contender and give me freakin’ Oliver Perez on the mound. Don’t pretend to be a contender and give me Daniel Murphy’s adventures in left field. Not with a $140 milliion payroll and a new stadium.

If you want to give me that level of competency, then you should have slapped a coat of paint on Shea, and stop pretending.

    • Wayneo says:

Fxcarden, in my collective time here on Metsblog, you may be one of the biggest clowns I’ve seen on here.

      • fxcarden says:

        Thank you.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

I actually like him, but man, his expectations are akin to that entitlement sentiment so many Met fans have. If they can get past that, they would be a lot happier….

        • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

How in the world can a Mets fan have an “entitlement sentiment?” You go back as far as I do when victory was just being close in a game. This club is not the club uptown. The Mets don’t have all those WS trophies and have not been to the playoffs something like 12 of the past 13 years. It’s not entitlement but a desire to win another WC before they die.:)

        • fxcarden says:

My friend, I have reached the stage where I refuse to accept mediocrity. For that, I have my job.

Maybe if ALL Mets fans got together and refused to accept mediocrity, the guys in the front office would get the hint.

The saddest part of this year’s debacle is that you can’t even point to a injury. At least the Yankees have a cop our with A-Roid. We don’t even have that. Losing Schneider is actually an improvement.

          • SlappyMcHomerton says:

i really don’t understand mets fan who accept this crap and wave their pom-pom’s simply because we have had some very lean years as fans. we have the most talented core since the 80’s and have completely wasted it in it’s prime. real mets fans know opportunities with such talent are few and far between, and should be cashed in. but thats ok, at least its not 2003. sweet, that makes me feel better

          • fxcarden says:

            Exactly my point.

      • SlappyMcHomerton says:

and why is he a clown? I think he was dead-on accurate, and if you watch baseball objectively his points are all valid. its ok to be a fan and to be realistic at the same time.

    • wladair says:

The media seeks David Wright out he doesn’t go to them, when are people going to get that?

He is accountable and speaks the truth , that’s why they go to him, who wants to be lied to and told “Que?” if asked a difficult question?

  27. ok gang it’s time for the ticked off i paid 18 bucks for parking on a sunday edition of “this day in mets infamy with rusty” so lets get this over and done with
happy b-day to another player that was involved in one of our worst trades ever Amos Otis (1947) – could u imagine him patrolling lf in the ’70’s!!!
    Mike “cheater” Scott (1955)
    Lou “who” Thornton (1963)
Rick “once again who!!” Trlicek (1969)
Scott “i shoulda stayed with the expo’s” Strickland (1976)
    Died on this date:

    Danny Napoleon (2003)

    Transactions:
New York Mets purchased Harry Chiti from the Cleveland Indians on April 26, 1962. – u know if u use the silent ch his name would be citi?? now u know

New York Mets traded Bobby Gene Smith to the Chicago Cubs for Sammy Taylor on April 26, 1962.

New York Mets purchased Jack Lamabe from the Chicago White Sox on April 26, 1967.

New York Mets traded Rick Auerbach to the Texas Rangers for Lenny “i punch rednecks” Randle on April 26, 1977.

New York Mets released Mike Matthews on April 26, 2005.

New York Mets signed free agent Michael Tucker on April 26, 2006. another mets killer that sucked for us lol

  28. zen says:

Derek Lowe might be a little old, but at least he’s a good and consistent pitcher. The obvious choice over Ollie.

Manny may be a little wacky, but he does manage to carry a team and hit in the clutch…in NY pleny of times against the Yanks. 2 rings too.

    • well we are in a bit of a rock and a hard place situation right now cuz u know they aint gonna pay ollie to pitch in buffalo so what do u do release livan? demote maine who has no more options and cross your fingers??? – maine will get better – ollie i hope will lay of the chimichangas

      • fxcarden says:

Nobosy said it has to be permanent for OP.

Just a demotion to get his stuff straightened out.

The union would never allow permanent anyway.

        • zen says:

Ollie can be skipped the next start as the Mets have an off day. Put him in the pen and make him pitch in none important situations.

Then again, he owned Philly last year and they have three top lefties in the line-up.

Livan will do his job: 200+ innings. .500 record.

          • Sylar says:

Starting Livan against the Phillies would be essentially waving a white flag for the game.

Perez gets one more chance. If he f–ks up, something has to happen to him

        • obviously but since ollie is a 5 year guy he can turn down the request to go to the minors

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

None of you are getting this. You cannot send Ollie to the minors unless he agrees to go. He’s out of options, he has seniority.

          • Hazmet says:

Thank you MF4D I was waiting for someone to bring up that he’s got over 5 years service and cannot just be sent down without his agreement. And why in the world would he ever agree to such a thing if it’s in his control.

  29. jimyager says:

IS TEAM STINKS!!! We are NOT over 500 and we can;t sweep the NATS? Our win streak is only 2 games and our loosing streak is twice that at 4 games, that is a problem. We leave 15 guys a game on base and can;t hit with RISP at all. Our rotation, other than Santana, can’t get beyond the 5th and give up less than 3 runs. Everytime we score a run our pitchers give it back two-fold the next at bat. Our players are affraid to get dirty and are so polite it would make a girl scout sick. This sounds like a World Series Champion team to me…NOT!!!!!! 2006 was our year and we blew it, 2007 was our year and we blew 2008 was our year and blew it, we had a 5 year window to win and this will be out final window. IF they cant turn things around and do it this year it will be time for a total re-build.

    • fxcarden says:

Pretty much on target, I’d say.

You forgot ” 2009 is our year, and we (are going to) blow it “.

      • fx do us a favor – come on after a mets win and have u forgotten we just took the series from the nats – it aint like we lost 2 out of 3 from em – but hey im talking logic something u r severely lacking

        • fxcarden says:

Dude, I’ll be here win or lose. My issue is that this team should have man handled the Nats.

Losing like we did today is an embarrasment.

          • no doubt – i agree with u on that and ollie deserves the beating from the fans like he got – but david and daniel? no they are trying – i’d rather have danny trying and failing out there instead of the likes of george foster who always skated u know what i mean?

          • fxcarden says:

I will agree with you on that….for now.

          • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

The kid the Nats threw out there today has excellent stuff and the ability to shut down any team. He was on today and the Mets weren’t. Tomorrows another day and I don’t get excited about baseball until June anyway. It’s too early to throw the towel in. :)

        • Furiousone says:

Sorry, this should’ve been- needed to be – a sweep.

Taking 2/3 from the Nats? NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Not after you had your a** handed to you in St Louis

        • QnsNative718 says:

Rusty, a sweep would be nice but I dont think people are getting amped because we couldnt sweep the Nats. I think people, me as well, are fuming because of the gutless effort this team put out today and have been putting out this yr thus far i.e. Beltran’s NON play at the plate and Murphy’s gaffe on Easter Sunday.

          • cant disgree with u on that queensnative

          • fxcarden says:

Exactly….it’s not even the loss…..it’s the WAY it happened.

I need to stay away from sharp objects.

          • MetsFan4Decades says:

Ha! – ’stay away from sharp objects’.
            And ropes and beams.

Man, just ugly today…..I’ve always defended the signing of Ollie but now even I’m starting to question it. His velocity is not where it should be. With even that 2mph loss, his pitches aren’t doing what they should. That definitely is a step backwards from last year.
Manual knows it, the fans know it, and I think even after listening to Ollie after the game, he knows it….

          • Hazmet says:

Yes, Ollie’s velocity is down. It was also down last year until he started that rocking routine he did that was his fix last year to get more drive and the extra velocity he was missing. So, is there a fix this year? That’s what disturbs me is I don’t know/ He’s been around long enough to not have to be continually tweaked, it’s ridiculous.

  30. Dirtysanchez says:

i know this is probably going to be lost in here by monday but these are my thoughts

    1) The marlins have now lost 6 str8. Just as alot of people have been saying (including me), the marlins couldnt keep up their hot start. Nobody is running away with this division and we still have 5 months to take first.

    2) While murphy is an adventure out there, he has made some good plays. Unfortunatly this is something we are going to have to deal with until he gets better. I am open to the mets sending him down to work on his fielding though and giving tatis the job for a little while.

    3) Fossum had better be on his way down. This guy has nothing. Who was the japanese player we signed and how is he doin?

    4) David wright looks pretty lost at the plate. I have all the confidance he will come around but i think he needs a day off. Delgado would be next on my list on guys who need a day off.

    5) Oliver perez is horrible against under .500 teams. He is soooo inconsitant it hurts. Its early but they gotta try and figure him out. Warthen has been given this task but he has not done a thing….i wonder if warthen is on the hotseat

    6) Manuel better chill with the bp use or its not gonna matter how good our bp is come sept when they are burnt out. I know its tough but today ollie should have been left out there to work on things since we were not going to do anything against zimm anyway.

  31. agreed on all points dirty how ya doin anyway???

    • Dirtysanchez says:

eh so so. Baseball is a game of patience and unfortuantly im not a patient person loll but im trying….how ya been rust

      • was at yesterdays and todays game and what a difference – yesterday they had fire today u could tell they were flat even before the game began

        • Dirtysanchez says:

they were hitting the ball well on ollie. I think from now on, manuel should play reed or tatis in LF for games with ollie. Give him the most defense possible.
Im also watching MLB TV World Series Highlights form the 80’s and 90’s and in my opinion just amazed as to how the game has changed….

  32. nobeers says:

Jeeez after the past two years and now this, its easy to not care this early in the season. I just wish I could watch a team that plays hard win or lose, at least that way I wouldnt be embarrassed of the salary were paying these guys.

  33. ok guys ill cya later – if u see my brother from another mother brock(kong)kingman tell him i said high!

    • brock kingman says:

      Hey Rusty!

Damn, brutal loss…embarassing and sucky. But, we did win 2 of 3…now, Marlins, Phils and Braves for 2 weeks…we are going to see right now if this team really sucks or not….

      • QnsNative718 says:

        Brock, whats good, man?

        • brock kingman says:

Oh man, not us! I am majorly disappointed so far, and trying harder and harder to rationalize it.

I think the starters better get it together in the next 2 weeks, or we are in for a long, long season.

          • oleosmirf says:

why do we need SP?? We have K-Rod and Putz!!!!

          • brock kingman says:

Well, oleo, some of us thought the starting pitching would be much better this year than it has been.

          • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

I know it’s been said to death but it’s really too early to get excited or depressed over this team. As I said before I really don’t get into baseball until June.

      • agreed – too bad murph is playing more like cronos from venom than geddy lee lol

  34. oh kong tell me how u enjoyed todays infamy segment lol

    • brock kingman says:

Amos Otis, Mike Scott, and the highlight of the 1977 team Lenny Randle all there on one day?

That is a major thumbs-up in my book!!

  35. oleosmirf says:

Carlos Beltran is a terrific baseball player however he might be one of the biggest pansies in all of sports.

the guy doesnt steal bases anymore b/c he wants to have the best percentage ever??? seriously thats not even a real record.

i mean dont get me wrong i wouldnt trade him but the guy doesnt slide b/c he doesnt want to get hurt/dirty. Go some balls man

    • oleosmirf says:

      *grow

    • fxcarden says:

I honestly think he is playing thru a leg injury.

      • oleosmirf says:

Beltran is ALWAYS playing through some type of leg injury.

He hasn’t been 100% since he was with Houston

        • QnsNative718 says:

Then he needs to fess up. Has he even taken a game off at all this season yet? I never understood that. Ok, I commend you for playing through the pain and not being a pan$y like whats his face Pavano, but youre actually hurting the team in the long run! This Branden Looper.

      • wladair says:

He absolutely has to fess up, i admire guys for playing hurt but that’s what they get paid for, as long as the injury is not going to get worse with play, they should play through it, maybe Jerry should rest him one or two games. Beltran is always full of excuses and never takes responsibility, people need to catch on to this guy.
David Wright is also in need of a day off, he is slumping no doubt, but pushing through it and wouldn’t admit to being injured if that is any part of the reason. He would never hide behind any excuse for failure.

Delgado also needs rest, i know his quads have been bothering him.

    • He needs a power washing to get all that sand out

  36. QnsNative718 says:

We cant blame Murphy for playing like a kid from the Bad News Bears out there. He is not an outfielder! Mets management failed to realize how important defense is in baseball.

    • fxcarden says:

Right. Who needs defense when we have our rotation ?.

    • brock kingman says:

Yeah Queens I agree, and it makes me appreciate VCarver’s defensive-focused statistical posts.

      • oleosmirf says:

except according to VCarver, Daniel Murphy is an “Above average” outfielder

        • QnsNative718 says:

Did he really say that? lol And Ramon Castro can steal 15 bases this season.

          • oleosmirf says:

yes sir i dont make things up. That was his reasoning for not signing Manny.

he said Murphy’s defense would save the Mets that many runs that it wouldnt be worth signing Manny.

            Whoops!

  37. QnsNative718 says:

I stated early how funny this is… We got Santana to stop losing streaks but got Ollie…to start em!

  38. MetsFan4Decades says:

We can only afford to try Ollie one more time in the rotation if Maine and Livan look good in their next outings. 2 losses from them is not the time to see if Ollie will bring it against the Phills.
Then again, what to do about Ollie. I said it earlier, I was always in favor of signing Ollie but now even I’m losing faith. His velocity is off, he doesn’t look as good as he did last year – and you know that’s saying alot…..

    • QnsNative718 says:

I was also one of the few who wanted him back. Now, I refuse to watch a Mets game where he pitches because his face makes me want to vomit on my cat.

To add to your list, His arm slot changes for nearly ALL his pitches. If that isnt a sign of an inconsistent pitcher, I dont know what is.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Inconsistent was Ollie’s middle name – lol. That was always a problem. I think what is now making it worse this year is that 2 MPH or so loss on his velocity. Those pitches need to be coming in 93 to do what he needs them to do coming across the plate. And they’re not b/c they’re lucky if they’re reaching 91. He’s not even remotely old so that’s not the problem.
Is there really an injury problem? Is it he’s just not ready? Has he permanently lost it?
I really have no idea, but then again, I don’t get paid to scout or coach these guys.

Manual said he’s gonna sit down with Warthen, gets his input, and make a decision. I’m just afraid that either way they go – God help us….

  39. gipper82475 says:

When the pandemic sets in. this will all mean very little.

    So…there is hope.

  40. zen says:

I always thought it had to be Wright or Reyes who had to becomes the leaders, but it can also be Santana. If fact, that may be the better choice.

Apparently David Cone was the early leader of the WS winning Yankee teams (From Torre’s book)

Cone was the de facto captain before Derek Jeter. At every turn — whether it was keeping David Wells in check, counseling Chuck Knoblauch on his playoff gaffe against the Indians, stepping up during the key 1998 clubhouse meeting, knowing how to push the buttons of everybody from George Steinbrenner to Paul O’Neill — Cone was the single most influential player in that clubhouse. Mussina talked so often about how much those teams missed Cone — and Mussina didn’t even play with Cone.

    Johan: please…do it.

    • QnsNative718 says:

I agree. Johan couldnt be the leader last yr for obvious reasons, but this yr I look for him to do what Cone did. As much as I love Wright and Reyes, theres just not leaders. They just dont have “IT”.

    • Agreed 100% Johan is one of the few who could lead. The only thing DAVE would ever lead is a pink shirt club.

      • wladair says:

Johan is the pitching ace, but the way he calls out his teammates makes me puke, he is really looking for trouble one of these days, someone will knock him on his ass and i will applaud them.

        • Are you kidding me? I can only imagine what he is holding back considering how pissed off he must be at all these clowns. I’d love to knock you on your ass and applaud myself you fool.

          • fxcarden says:

            Really. Johan tells it straight.

          • zen says:

That’s what a leader does. Great for Johan!

Keith did it. Pujols does it.

          • wladair says:

oh puhleez gimme a break, he is getting paid well for pitching 6 innings every 4 or 5 days, if he thinks its easy to play 9 innings every day, then clone him 8 times and the mets can save a lot of money.

  41. Maybe Takahashi will encourage Delgado among others to find their maaaahhhhhhhhbles

  42. oleosmirf says:

i understand Murphy is going to struggle playing LF but i mean he’s completely incapable of playing defense.

He’s that bad. I mean i can understand taking a bad route to the ball, misjudging a line drive but dropping flyballs, and falling down in the OF is inexcuseable even for a little leaguer…

  43. Gasface77 says:

Zzzzzzzzzz…..wake me up on Wednesday when Johan is pitching. Sick of this!

  44. I AM SO SICK OF PINK SHIRT DAVE! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE METS YOU KNOW BALLPLAYERS WITH BALLS ?!?!??!?!?!??!?

    • DOES ANYONE HONESTLY THINK KEITH F’N HERNANDEZ WOULD BE CAUGHT DEAD IN A PINK SHIRT? AND PEOPLE WONDER WHY WE SHRIVEL LIKE A WEINER IN A COLD SWIMMING POOL IN THE CLUTCH!

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

You know, once with this rant was more than enough.

Of all the things to complain about, you pick the color of Wright’s shirt?

        How old are you?

  45. SIT wright. PUT murphy at third…
    why not?

    • LGNYM says:

Because Murphy is a pretty terrible 3b and needs to work on his OF play. No need to be shuffling him around.

      Wright is the Mets 3b

  46. Horseman says:

A lot of people on here are frustrated, me included. I can’t tell whether this team was built to win this year or not. If this was the year to win, then Lowe should have been signed. He might not be that great in year 3 or 4, but by then, you hope that you have talent in the minors that step up. But this organization has trouble actually developing talent doesnt it. Question, who was the last starting pitcher that the mets developed? Gooden? Pelfrey, in my mind, is still more hype than talent. Generation K did not work out. Holt is still to early to evaluate but did anyone see the mets drafting this guy? Where did he come from? This is why, the mets always rely on free agents. Maybe new coaches are needed down in the minors, or maybe I don’t know, new scouts!

Another question, how many free agent signings actually work out for the mets? Santana was traded for, Piazza the same. Beltran, a rare yes. However, this guy has never and probably will never be accepted by the fans. His sliding phobia lately, has not helped his cause. Looking at a curve ball will always be shown for years to come. Fans never forget.

Maybe this team is rebuilding? No it couldn’t be. If so trades in the offseason should have been made. Cerrone suggested Delgado. I agreed with that. Omar seemed to be satisfied last season with 3 picks in the draft. He took Ike, a first baseman. Why? He had Carp, Murphy, Evans, not to mention, Tex on the free agent market. I will say, glad no Tex, however, there were options.

Here’s my suggestion. If the mets have a .500 record in June, fire sale. Pull a Marlins move a trade as many players as possible to fill the system. Players I would trade, Beltran, Church, Castillo, Delgado, Maine, Perez, Putz, Murphy. I put Murphy there because he has no position. He is a DH maybe even the next Edgar Martinez. Get talent back and try to win it in 2011. I would rather wait, knowing that the mets organization is rebuilding then continually get cock teased year after year.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

well said Horseman, i think a lot of Met fans would rather see a fire sale than heart breaking collapses year after year. The fire sale has to include Omar too. Also, the scouting has been horrible for many years except for Wright, Kazmir, Pelf(maybe). Shouldve signed Lowe and traded for Vazquez (proven veterans) not keeping huge question marks(Ollie and Maine). I said it all offseason and i’ll say it again, 3rd or 4th place this year.

  47. fxcarden says:

The would probably then trade the prospects and we’d wind up with nothing.

They are at the point of no return. They have to keep Citi Field full, or the team may go bankrupt, so they will keep doing the same crap year in and year out…….sign a big name and surround him with crap.

Last year it was Johan backed up by the worst bullpen in history.

This year is K-Rod, who will be fresh as a daisy in July because we’ll never get to him.

Next year it will be someone else.

    • Horseman says:

I agree, that the mets have to keep the stadium full. But lets face it. How much is a ticket nowadays? I had the Sunday pack for the last 5 years. This year, I did not get the package. I could not get just Sunday games. I live in Pa so going to NY on a Wednesday was not in the cards for me. I believe, that people are going to go the stadium anyway this year to see it. But you have to think long term.

  48. Dgrvly says:

I live in Atlanta and don’t get PIX 11, if anyone wants to get the game off PIX 11 and send me a copy please e-mail me at Dgrvly@aol.com, we can work out the details, thanks

  49. Horseman says:

Another rant. This team is not playing well. The Nationals are the worst team in baseball. The mets were lucky to win the series. Why? Friday, great pitching from Santana, but Krod almost blew the game. Saturday, Beltran showed up. Today, no one wanted to play, maybe it was to hot out. Now, they face a struggling Florida team. Then the phillies. I will see the Philly game on Saturday. Unfortunately, Perez is scheduled to pitch. I don’t no what to expect.

  50. apocalypto says:

you can’t take the Mutts out of the Mutts!

  51. Starr247 says:

OK, let me get this right. Because we are basically on a pace starting out this year that is reminiscent of last year, we want to:

Fire HoJo as the hitting instructor.
    Trade Jose Reyes.
    Trade Daniel Murphy.
    Trade Carlos Beltran.
    Release Carlos Delgado.
    Trade David Wright.
Give a blindfold and a cigarette to Ollie.

Luv the support of team on this board. So, being Devil’s Advocate, let’s analyze some things.

Jose Reyes – hitting .300 again albeit without many steals. If we trade him, who replaces him? David Eckstein? If you said yes, keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

Daniel Murphy – hitting .300 also. Trade him and replace him with ? And remember, you GM trade partner will not be drinking said Kool-Aid. Granted, his growing pains as an OF is difficult when all the ‘Met Fans’ want him to be a Gold Glove OF, but I suppose we’d prefer to a .260 hitter with no arm in LF instead (which is what every GM would offer no doubt)

Carlos Beltran – Trade him? The best CF in the NL? Only getting Ellsbury and Youkilis would make this palatable. Or Pujols.

Carlos Delgado – everyone knows he hits in spurts. Nobody will trade for his contract so this is a null point.

David Wright – All the GMs in baseball would sacrifice a body part for him, especially if we are going to be in Steve Phillips/Scott Kazmir mode. At the end of the year, his numbers will be there. Again, if you can get Pujols or Gonzalez and Peavy, it should be considered. Otherwise, NO!

Yes, HoJo has run his course and should be replaced.
Yes, Ollie needs a trip to the minors while Redding takes his spot.
Yes, the starting rotation needs a shot. While I think Maine will wind up fine, Ollie is lost at sea and Livan is the joke most of us knew he’d be (not the one many on this board claimed was sooooo much better than Pedro or some of the other options)

To recap, with most of the lineup hitting around .300 and the bullpen doing their job, we cannot panic and do something stupid a la Steve Phillips and trade something that clearly will come back to haunt us.
If some combination package of F-Mart, Niese, Gee plus some other minor leaguers (not names Flores or Holt) could net us Halliday or Peavy, pull the trigger.
Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the bumpy ride.

Phillips didn’t trade Kazmir, Duquette did. If most of the line up is hitting .300 why does the hitting coach need to go? Ollie can’t go down he’s got 5 years service so they’d need him to agree. Otherwise, I like the don’t give up the ship mentality. I’ve been trying hard not to go non-linear on a rant but this team is getting difficult to like when they turn in performances like today, and the beginning of this season. They’ve had teams with far less talent that I could get behind because you knew they were playing to their potential. This crew is driving me insane.

I feel like I have to comment here, it gets so hard to come on these boards after a loss like this because it seems like everybody is given up, i know its the nationals but they do sometimes win games and sometimes good teams lose games its just what happens. At least the team seems to be admitting there is some problem with ollie and let’s just get it fixed although phillie is his next start and we all know how he gets when he pitches againist them, again it’s not like we are 15 or 20 games back, we can still take this. We did win this series so let’s win a few more. The marlins are headed back down to earth so let’s take 2/3. For now there is another game to play, its not over yet

Yes i understand that people are frustrated and mad, we all are, so please don’t jump all over me.

while you wouldn’t get major league .300 hitters in return at the moment, you could trade a lot of the above names for a lot of very high ceiling minor league talent, and gear up for a run in 2 or 3 years. we’re stuck running on the hamster wheel if we keep what we’ve got trust me

Question. Is it harder to hit a baseball or a golf ball? Every golf professional has a swing coach, yet I constantly hear people on this blog talk about how a hitting coach is almost a ceremonious position and has no real effect on a hitter.

It drives me absolutely crazy that David Wright has no consistency in his swing mechanics year to year. Its been almost 2 years since he has hit the ball to the opposite field with any sort of power. How hasn’t this been corrected by now? His swing is so flat and long. He has extra movement in his arms and legs and yet HOJO hasn’t changed a single thing.

Can somebody just show Wright Video of his swing a few seasons ago? How hard is that?

I think its time to take off the training wheels and stop treating David Wright with kid gloves. Hojo is only still in this organization because of his relationship to Wright.

I don’t post much on the boards here and some of these funny responses are why. Totally agree OP has been awful and Lowe looks good now. Maybe Lowe was the better sign, but they are both FOUR STARTS into the year. Put another way, OP has started less than 5% of his starts as a Met. Now that could turn out to be a nightmare statement, but it might not. Maybe he’ll be smart and take a trip to the minors.

Also agree that the team isn’t gelling and that there is a noticeable lack of fire/grit/whatever you want to call it.

But all this screaming about Wright. Yeah the swing doesn’t look to good, he’s still batting .270. It just seems a little short-sighted to be saying the season’s over, etc. If the season’s over, why are you watching? Why are you posting 40 messages a day? Probably because you know that the season’s not over and there’s still 140+ games to play.

And when people complain about holes in the line-up referring to the 7 & 8 hitters, you sound like ridiculous Yankee fans who need past their prime all-stars batting 1 through 9.

My two pet peeves with Mets fans:

    1) Our infatuation with the Yankees who should matter to Mets fans 6 times a year. Way too many times I will be at a Mets game and the fans will chant “Yankees suck”. The Yankees don’t matter to us Mets fans they are in the AL. Chant “Phillies suck” or “Braves suck” or “Marlins suck” or “Oliver Perez sucks”.

    2) We steal every other teams tradition. Throwing the ball back from the Cubs, Sweet Caroline from the Sox, Enter Sandman from Mariano Rivera, booing from the Phillies fans, and Jackie Robinson’s history from the Dodgers.

Number one is usually b/c some skankee doche is in our park in Skankee gear…when he gets up to go to the can, he gets booed and a chorus of “Yankees Suck!”

Number two is hysterical, and sadly true.

I believe that this regime of Omar and Jerry need to seriously take a look at what is occurring with this ball club thus far. I realize that the season is only eighteen games young but the starting pitching is a disaster. Ollie has been a huge disappoint. I for one was never in favor of bringing this “headcase” back to Queens but that’s what Omar felt was necessary. He is overpaid and under-producing. But I guess that’s what an evil demon like Scott Boras will force people into doing. I think change may be on the horizon or this season will be a long one. These starters can not continue to go out and give lackluster performances and wear down the best pen in baseball. The one shining light in Johan. If there was a cloning device we’d be ok. The defense too. I have seen little leaguers make better plays and hustle more than this team has thus far. It’s pitiful. This was a team that was to be competing for the glory this season and so far they look like they are play for the top pick in next years’ draft. It’s time to make some adjustments. Send people down if you have to, make a trade, shake up the line up, bench some people, cut some people, whatever!!! Just start playing like you love this game and care for it. Get your heads in it. And dammit lets win some games
