At her blog, Mets Geekette discovers that being overly connected to the Mets’ fanbase through the internet has brought out the best and worst in her as a fan.
…anonymity can certainly do that, and i often wonder how good a thing it is that we have twitter, message boards, dare i say it blogs, talk radio, and everything else us fans use to voice our opinion with, usually in an anonymous way…
Aaron Torres, a Red Sox fan, writes about how Mets fans are second to none, writing that they are “a large group of passionate individuals who live under one large dark cloud.”
…well said aaron, sometimes it feels like the cloud is pretty dark, but i try to find the silver lining, as i think most of us do…although this quote may be perceived negatively, this piece is very complimentary to mets fans…
Planet of the Geeks is back with more Legos, this time with Keith Hernandez, glasses and all, interviewing Carlos Delgado.
Joe Hamrahi, whose name you’ll recognize from our NL East updates, recaps his first visit to Citi Field at Baseball Daily Digest.
Lastly, Ted Berg of SNY.tv revisits the topic of booing players on the toom you root for.
…i understand that people are frustrated and like to vent, that’s fair, but i agree with ted here that booing david wright is a waste of energy…i think it gives away our home field advantage, and are we really so impatient that we need to boo a player who’s having an early season slump…

Wright deserved it
I hope Aaron Torres is a 90 year old Red Sox fan, because then he is truly an expert about a baseball franchise living under a dark cloud. Otherwise he should probably just enjoy this recent 4 year run of success that came after a century of misery for his own favorite team.
I agree, Aaron worry about your own team.
I thought it was a good article. Showed respect and hit a few points right on the head.
Seriously, guys, did you READ the piece? He was very respectful, even admiring of Mets fans.
No, I based my comment on Regis’ comment, which he has now altered after realizing it had the wrong effect.
I don’t have time to read all the articles that are linked from here, I trusted the summary to my own detriment in this case, but I’ve read Regis’ work here and on Metsheads for a years now and he generally communicates the point well, I’ll give him a mulligan on this one.
I phrased it the wrong way, mulligan accepted
If Wright was JUST having a slow start I would agree with you. But…. Wright killed us in September last year and he had a ton of chances with RISP and didn’t come through. Wright has started the season where he left off and that is the reason for the booing.
340 .416 .577 .993
Wrights September 2008 numbers.
LOL.
If you meant something else then you should have said something else. If every player we had or even IF Reyes had hit this well in September we would have won the division.
I honestly don’t think Mets fans should feel they are under a ‘dark cloud’ and those that do are perpetuating a myth that this franchise is ‘jinxed.’
Just for perspective, this franchise has won 2 World Series…tied with the Blue Jays and Marlins for the most among expansion teams. They have appeared in 4 World Series total, 2 more than any expansion franchise…the Jays, Marlins, Royals, and Padres have each played in 2, the Astros, Angels, Brewers, Rockies, DBacks, and Rays in one and the Rangers, Mariners, and Expos/Nationals have not played in any.
I mean, sure the team will put you through the ringer, but what team doesn’t? Didn’t the self-proclaimed “greatest franchise in the history of sports” also author the greatest postseason collapse in history?
All told, we haven’t had it so bad. There is nothing loveable about acting like losers…maybe it is time Mets fans acted more like winners…
Mets fans need to act like winners? What does that even mean?
Actually, I don’t know. I think my allergies (and their medication) are taking over today.
I think I just mean the incessant whining, the incessant inferiority complex, and the never-ending doomsday attitude get old after awhile. Sometimes the hardest part of being a Mets fan is having to deal with other Mets fans.
Given this franchise, I see why people are pessimistic, and I also see why people wish others weren’t pessimistic.
In the end I guess people are going to feel however they feel.
Actually it is the opposite. This fanbase treats this team as if they’re the dynasty Yanks or current BoSox. Too many fans here treat this team as if they accomplished something ever. (See for example, how they demand Wright get the treatment reserved for winners and HOF players)
Wright hit .400 in september just like he did the year before. and he still has the best numbers FOR HIS CAREER with runners in scoring position.
Booing our own player does NOTHING. Except only make them push harder. Why do you think so many players flourish when they get away.
Good article by Berg. The booing of Wright is moronic. But stupid behavior is the norm from Mets fans these days, so none of that stuff is really all that surprising.
Given how the team has performed for the past 2 years, you really do have some disgusting nerve to get on anyone for booing.
I can understand venting. Yell out your inappropriate phrase and move on. However, when you put yourself into the game and increase the slight effect it might have against your team then you are an idiot.
Do you honestly think a MLB player is going to play harder and do better because you boo? Does that make you an ahole or just stupid?
Yeah really, its just senseless. If a guy is being lazy out there or is obviously not putting out a full effort than I understand the booing, but in the case of Wrgiht’s slump its just foolish to boo IMO. Its not like David doesn’t know he’s struggling.
booooooooooooooooooooo
I would have bet the ranch….
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
On booing. I never boo players. I try never to do anything to a player from the stands that I wouldn’t do in person face-to-face. No one bats 1.000. There are some players I respect, and I cheer them.
On rooting for a team. At the end of the day, I’m a sports fan, a baseball fan, and whether it’s the NY Yankees, the NY Mets, or the Philadelphia Phillies, I think the most I can ask of any contest is that everyone leave their best effort on the field, to the extent possible that day. I think the Mets are a viable enterprise, they don’t need me shouting for them.
On team performance. The sad facts are generally true that if you finish high in the standings one year, you get back draft picks which really hurt the bottom line down the road. So, winning is losing, losing is winning. It’s a double edged sword either way. Just look at the Yankees and Mets, how they rebounded after prolonged periods at the bottom, with splendid draft picks, complemented by a couple choice free agent signings. The time is now. The time will come. In the meantime, I’m just happy we have baseball, National League baseball, without a DH, in NYC.
That article by Ted Berg was a good one. Anyone boo’ing or thinking of Boo’ing Dwright or any other Met player should really read it.
Dwright is in a slum. 18 games. Can you guys cut him some slack.? Met fans can be the absolute worst fans around.
boooooooooooooooo
I’m going to guess that your annual salary is less than that of David Wright. Whatever percentage less your salary is than his, we’ll apply that same percentage to the seating capacity of Citi Field, and that number of people will go to where ever you earn your living and boo you to see how you like it.
I like the bit where he says that he always come through and that when Wright comes out of his slump we all going to cheer him and forget the past………… Had Wright got out of his slump earlier in the year we might have been a few games over in the race but no we lost again by 1 game. Its not like wright is a rookie here he is a 4-5 year veteran who should be mastering his weekness.
I think it is absolutely shameful for Mets fans to boo David Wright now. It accomplishes NOTHING. Do you want him to struggle further? It seems like it.
So he isn’t allowed to EVER slump in his career, or HIS OWN fans will turn on him? Some fans. It makes me ashamed to be a Mets fan. Maybe he shouldn’t have worked hard and played so well over the past few years, so your expectations wouldn’t be so high….
DW is one of the most likable, hard-working, hold-nothing-back guys in the entire league. If you were to survey the league for players who would be the LEAST likely to be booed, Wrights name would be on there. And yet here we are, not even out of April yet.
This paragraph from Ted’s article says it best:
“We hear stories of Red Sox fans booing Ted Williams and Phillies fans booing Mike Schmidt and we cringe. But then here we are, booing the guy who could very well become the defining hitter of this franchise like those players were for theirs, and we’re doing it less than three weeks into a six-month season.”
RELAX people. Two of our biggest bats are slumping and most of our rotation is in disarray, yet we are only 3 games out! Think about how good we’ll be once clicking on all cylinders!
