Note: Beltran Hot, Wright Not

by Regis Courtemanche on April 27th, 2009 at 9:02 am

Carlos Beltran has a nine game hitting streak, and has reached base in 23 consecutive games dating back to last season.

He leads the National League in batting at .406, and since April 21, Beltran is batting .542 with seven RBI while only striking out once.

On the flip side, since April 18th, David Wright is just 6-for-32 and has two RBI, during which he has struck out 10 times and has an OBP of .257.

Barbara Barker of Newsday writes that fans at Citi Field booed Wright yesterday after he struck out for the third time.

“I’m not seeing it all that well right now,” Wright is quoted as saying.   “I’m fouling off pitches I should be putting in play.  It’s forcing me to get into situations I don’t want to get into, seeing pitches I don’t want to see.  I need to do a better job of recognizing pitches early in the count and putting them into play.”

Also, Carlos Delgado is just 4-for-35 over the same period, and has three RBI.

…it’s a matter of time until delgado and wright get going, but i’m still waiting for a Mets team to fire on all cylinders… i feel like i’ve been waiting for that for a very long time though…

Read: Concern Over Ollie

by Regis Courtemanche on April 27th, 2009 at 8:32 am

In yesterday’s loss to the Nationals, Oliver Perez threw just over four innings, and allowed seven runs on nine hits, two of which were home runs.

In four starts this season, Perez is 1-2 with a 9.31 ERA.

At The Star-Ledger, Brian Costa quotes Jerry Menual, who says, “I’m really, really concerned about him right now. I don’t know what we’ll do. It’s something that has me concerned.”

Costa believes a stint in the bullpen or even a demotion to triple-A may be possible, and asks Ollie about his recent performance. “I don’t feel good,” Perez said. “I haven’t been doing my job, and I feel bad for that…In this situation, they have the decision.”

…from what i hear, the rumors of time in the bullpen were just reactionary to the fact that casey fossum was dfa’d…heading to the minors and working things out is the more likely scenario of the two at this point…

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post writes that Manuel is going to sleep on it before making a decision about what to do with the struggling lefty.

…shiny, new contracts do not make pitchers perform better, but unfortunately for perez they do increase expectations…to me, ollie is performing about how i expected he would, if not worse, and if he performs poorly against the phillies, some time on the farm may do him some good…ugh…
