The Mets (9-11) lost to the Marlins (12-8), 7 to 4, at Citi Field tonight.
For a full recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.
The least you should know…
- The Mets got on the board first with Gary Sheffield‘s two-run triple, plating Alex Cora and Carlos Beltran.
- Speaking of Cora, he had a good night filling in for Luis Castillo. The veteran infielder went 2-3 with two runs scored and one walk, steal and RBI each.
- Livan Hernandez was solid in 5 1/3 IP with five K’s and two earned runs.
- The Marlins were carried by Jorge Cantu, who torched the Mets with two home runs and five RBI.
Other Thoughts…
- Despite another two strikeouts by David Wright, it was good to see him get a two-out hit with a runner on second. Hopefully he can build on it.
- I love watching Bobby Parnell pitch. The velocity and movement on his fastball is looking really good. He also showed some guts tonight by getting out of a jam in the 6th inning.
- Wow it is scary when the Marlins have Cameron Maybin, Emilio Bonifacio and Alfredo Amezaga flying around the base paths. They resemble an Olympic relay team.
- Why? Why? Why do managers have a lefty warming up in the bullpen for no reason? Sean Green obviously didn’t have it tonight but Jerry Manuel kept him in to face John Baker who walked. Then Green throws a meatball to Cantu. I just don’t get it.
Johan Santana closes out the three-game series versus the Marlins tomorrow afternoon at Citi Field.

Enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets!
Jerry Manuel talked with reporters before tonight’s game and, according to SNY, said Carlos Delgado will sit tonight and tomorrow.
The Mets are off on Thursday, meaning Delgado will have had four consecutive days to rest his sore hip.
Manuel said Delgado is feeling better, adding, ‘But, if I can make it not a problem by giving him two days I will.”
Meanwhile, Manuel said Luis Castillo is suffering from back spasms, though he could have played last night or tonight.
Speaking about Omir Santos, who will start for the fourth-straight day, Manuel said he is excited for him as a player, noting this is an opportunity for the team to get a good look at Santos, who has ‘surprising power,’ which is ‘encouraging.’
Manuel acknowledged that Ramon Castro has been a good back-up, but Santos is giving the team good at bats, and ‘he runs a lot better.’
He would not say what will happen when Brian Schneider is activated during the first week of May.
Similarly, while Ryan Church is his every-day right fielder, he is not benching Daniel Murphy, who will likely start tomorrow. Manuel said he preferred to bat Gary Sheffield in this series, as he is trying to find more power in the lineup. “I’m not discarding him, by any means,” he said of Murphy, adding, “Murph is a baseball guy, I don’t need to tell him the state of the union.”
…for what it’s worth, i get the sense, from talking to people connected to the team, that there is more concern about murphy’s defense than they’ve led on…
Lastly, Manuel acknowledged that he has discussed aggressive base running with his team, mostly because of the dimensions of Citi Field, noting the importance of going from first to third.
He says the team often encourages one another from the bench, yelling, ‘Triple,’ out to the base paths on a ball hit deep to left field – in fact, ‘Delgado is famous for it,’ the manager said.
Alex Cora will start at second base tonight in place of Luis Castillo, who left last night’s game with back spasms.
Additionally, Fernando Tatis will start at first base for the second-straight day in place of Carlos Delgado, who continues to have pain in his right hip.
Gary Sheffield will again start in left field.
Lastly, Omir Santos will start at catcher.

Our friend, Zoe, at Pick Me Up Some Mets, captured video of J.J. Putz pieing Omir Santos in the face, as congratulations for his grand slam yesterday.
Another video, this one of the 1969 Mets singing on The Ed Sullivan Show, is relayed by The ‘Ropolitans.
…i’m not sure why, but seeing all those guys in their youth is unsettling to me, although i definitely enjoyed the video…
According to Five Boro Sports, John Franco’s son is trying to follow in his footsteps.
Dan Graziano of SNY.tv thinks the Mets may be bluffing about demoting Oliver Perez in order to light a fire under him.
…interesting theory, and ollie is definitely someone who thinks a lot… maybe the scare tactics, if that’s what they are, will cater to his sensitivities, and help to inspire him on the mound… wasn’t the contract supposed to do that though…
Wondering what Marlon Anderson has been up to? Me neither, but an old friend of his wrote an interesting article on aging ballplayers at the New York Times.
Finally, a topic dear to my heart – beer and ballparks…
Eric Asimov, also of the Times, discusses the offerings at the New York stadiums, and gives his suggestions for beer at a game.
…although i’m extremely pleased with the selection at citi, i’m holding my breath for ommegang’s witte or hennepin saison to be sold one day, maybe some delerium tremens…make it happen wilpons…

For the first time in a while, I feel good about where this team is at and where they may be able go.
It’s amazing what three wins in four games, and a strong pitching performance from John Maine, can do for the psyche of a Mets fan.
Last week, I wrote about how the window for winning may be closing on this team. I still believe that. However, I also said say there is still room for them to jump through it and land in the winner’s circle, and I hope they do.
What’s more, last night was just a strong, well-played, nothing-great, nice type of win – such an outing is always good for the soul, be it for the fans, the team or the media who cover them.
Every game does not need to be an instant classic, there doesn’t have to be a headline every night. Sometimes, it’s nice to see a simple, all-around good game, where the team starts and finishes well, they all do their jobs, they win and go home to get a peaceful night’s sleep.
The Mets are 9–10, have two more games against the Marlins, then play the Phillies and Braves during 10 of the following 13 games.
So, I’m thinking, at that point, 34 games in to the season, and having played a good chunk of games against the rest of the division, we should be able to breath deep, and get a sense of who this team is and where it is going.
…this is pretty fascinating…
Last night, SNY put a mic on Sandy Alomar Sr., to hear him explain Citi Field’s ground rules to the umpires and Marlins manager Fredie Gonzalez before the game in a meeting at home plate.
