News: Freddy Garcia may soon Retire
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 28, 2009 10:11 am

According to the Buffalo News, Triple-A RHP Freddy Garcia says the front area of his right shoulder is sore.

“Maybe I want to try it one more time,” Garcia is quoted as saying.  “If I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to be feeling right now, I don’t know… I’m going to try my best. If not, I guess I’ll go home… That’s it, man.”

Garcia allowed seven runs in five innings last night, and has a 8.18 ERA in two starts this season in Triple-A.

oh well…so much for pitching depth..have a good retirement freddy…

If Oliver Perez could even just pitch to his 2008 form and Tim Redding can get back into shape, I think we’ll be fine in the rotation. I’m guessing Livan gets one more shot to fail before he’s replaced by Redding. Perez is going to stick around until Niese or Gee start pitching better in AAA. They’re not going to demote Ollie for Figgy IMO, even for short-term reasons.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

probably not and your right const. As bad as ollie does..he is not going anywhere. I think however we will see figgy back sometime this season. Niese and Gee got ALONG ways to go before even being considered imo. The surest guy we got down there is figgy and imo thats the next guy to get called up if anything should present itself.

Whoa -kudos to Garcia for being honest about his abilities at this point in his career. Depth for the starting rotation is starting to look more than a little shaky.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

thats why i thought it was stupid for figgy to refuse assignment…for this reason.

      • bennyagbayani says:

        well atleast Figilicious came back

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, not exactly sure what his mindset was for that, especially at this stage in his career and his age. His best shot for a steady job and a shot to pitch in the big leagues, even as a spot starter on/off, appeared to be with the Mets.
We’ll never know what was in his mind but he’s back and available right away, if needed.

        • NYMETSFAN718 says:

I guess he figured that pitching is always in demand and everyone is looking for decent pitching help, when no one called he realized that hes gotta stay with the Mets to have a shot

        • Chris Jelic says:

Actually, if his wife had not cut off free access to her blog, we’d likely know exactly what he was thinking. I think that’s why she cut off access. The last post before she did so was highly emotional, and suggested that she and Nelson were PO’d by the way he was treated by the Mets, in getting sent down for Fossum after a quality start. In retrospect, it appears the Mets really needed the extra BP arm for the horrific week that followed.

I think it was very obvious that freddy was never going to pitch for the Mets. hope it works out for him but I just don’t think it will ever be for the Mets.

right now, he is probably #9 on the depth chart for SPs for the Mets. Redding, Figgy and Niese would probably all get used before Garcia.

    • There's Always '10 says:

We should see if Val Pascucci can pitch.

      • Joe R says:

Haha was he the guy last year who hit like 30 hr and I was wondering why his name was never mentioned when we were looking for some pop in the lineup??

  4. therealsince86 says:

Oh well, some gambles you lose and some you win. At least we were playing the dime slots.

    • NYMETSFAN718 says:

LOL, true i guess its nice to know Omar gambles at the tropicana, and not the Borgata

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

I think Freddy is a prime example of someone who just too afraid to push himself post surgery and ended up hurting himself more in the long run.

    • Chris Jelic says:

What off season gambles have the Mets won? The last “gambles” that paid off were Tatis and Stokes (maybe Ayala too). We decided to give about 5 guys a shot at the number 5 spot, and the showing has been an embarrassment. Granted, the number 3 slot has looked worse.

      • therealsince86 says:

Disagree, we have won those slots many times. Valentin, Chavez, Tatis, Gotay for a little while, and many more that we have been able to ride a hot hand for a while. Do they always turn into everyday guys for the long run? Nope but that’s not the point.

I’m going to the Buffalo game tonight – Figgy is pitching, up against Kevin Mulvey
