In yet another come-from-behind victory, the Philadelphia Phillies scored scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to erase an 11-7 Washington lead and defeat the Nats, 13-11.
Ryan Howard hit one grand slam to pull the Phillies even in the 5th inning, and Raul Ibanez smacked another in the 8th inning to cap the Philadelphia comeback.
The two teams get back to work tonight with Washington’s John Lannan opposing the Phils Cole Hamels.
…How many times will the Phillies come back and pull out wins like this??!!!
In Atlanta, Rick Ankiel drove in 2 runs and Joel Pineiro scattered 7 hits over 6 2/3 innings to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Braves.
Jair Jurrjens took the loss despite giving Atlanta another quality start.
Tonight, Kyle Lohse takes the mound to try to make it two in a row for the Cardinals while the Braves counter with Jo-Jo Reyes.
In other news…Atlanta starter Tom Glavine has decided to continue his rehab and put off retirement. He still hopes to strengthen his arm and come back from elbow and shoulder surgery.
Phillies reliever J.C. Romero has filed a law suit against the manufacturer and distributor of the supplement that caused him to fail a drug test last August.
Romero claims that the company did not include the drug androstenedione (which caused the positive test) on its list of ingredients.
Another Philadelphia reliever is also in the news. Closer Brad Lidge is suffering from inflammation in his right knee and is currently listed as day-to-day.

…i too had the privilege of sitting in these seats for one of the exhibition games, and yes, they are terrific seats, but i got the feeling you wouldn’t be amongst “regular” fans in this area once the season started…however, i highly recommend sitting out in the right field reserved area…i sat in the front row of section 102 and it had an old yankee stadium bleacher feel…

According to the Buffalo News, Triple-A RHP Freddy Garcia says the front area of his right shoulder is sore.
“Maybe I want to try it one more time,” Garcia is quoted as saying. “If I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to be feeling right now, I don’t know… I’m going to try my best. If not, I guess I’ll go home… That’s it, man.”
Garcia allowed seven runs in five innings last night, and has a 8.18 ERA in two starts this season in Triple-A.
Last night, Mets C Omir Santos hit a first-inning grand slam for his first major-league home run.
…SNY’s Ted Berg ironically calls him Extra Base Omir, but it’s becoming less ironic every day…
The 28–year-old Santos has a five-game hitting streak, during which he’s batting .300 with three extra-base hits.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com, Santos is one of four active players who collected his first career RBI on a grand slam.
In a report for the Star-Ledger, Brian Costa explains why Santos chose to sign with the Mets as a minor-league free agent.
…last week, i sat in the dugout and watched santos shave down his bat handles with a plane… it was like woodshop class, as you can see in this photo i took… wood shavings were all over the bench… he told me the league will not allow black handles for the bat he uses, and he doesn’t like tape, and these are the only two bats he has, so he was shaving off
the paint, ever so softly, trying not to thin out the handles too much… it was like watching a surgeon perform on a patient… a) i’m surprised the player is left to do this, and not some clubhouse attendant, and b) i think it’s funny that a baseball team has a wood plane lying around…
“I think he handles the game plan very well,” Jerry Manuel said of Santos last night. “The pitchers like throwing to him. He gives them a good target, he gives the umpire a very good look at pitches.”
…like i said last night before the game, from what i can gather, as long as Ramon Castro isn’t hitting, Jerry Manuel will get santos as much playing time as possible, to see what they’ve got… Brian Schneider is due back around May 3…
…it will be interesting to see what happens then, considering, according to previous reports, the Mets had been shopping castro all winter…
…in the end, santos will likely be sent back to the minors, but i do believe manuel would rather have the best defensive catcher he can find, in place of offense from that position…

Carlos Delgado was forced out of last night’s lineup after experiencing discomfort in his right hip.
Delgado, who will visit a doctor today, told reporters the hip is sore, saying it is typical of pain he has in his hip in the past.
Jerry Manuel told reporters Delgado likely injured the hip while running the bases during a triple on Sunday.
…prior to last season, i had two scouts tell me delgado’s hip would eventually act up and give him trouble, be it last season, this season, 10 years from now, whatever, saying it is something he’d probably need surgery on some day… this is not to say now is that time… he’ll probably just miss a game or two here and be fine… the point is, this is always something to keep an eye on, i guess…
Luis Castillo left last night’s game in the eighth inning, after experiencing back spasms while running to first base the previous inning.
Jerry Manuel said after the game Castillo will be examined today, “but more than likely Alex Cora will play second base tomorrow.”
…like Gary Cohen said last night, with where castillo’s mind is at, and the way he is playing, he’d have to have his leg cut off to keep him out of the lineup…
According to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, Brian Schneider hit in an extended spring training game yesterday, Tim Redding will remain in St. Lucie for his next start, and Angel Pagan is still a month away from being able to play in a game.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel talked with reporters following last night’s win over the Marlins, and had the following to say about:
Luis Castillo, who left the game in the eighth inning:
“He had some muscle spasms in his back. So, we’ll obviously check him out later and see where he is, but more than likely Alex Cora will play second base tomorrow.”
John Maine, who allowed one run and one hit in six innings:
“Well, I thought John commanded his slider very well. The Marlins a good fastball-hitting club with power, and to able to throw his off-speed pitches for strikes, I thought, was key for him.”
Omir Santos, who hit a grand-slam:
“He does make it tough for us. We want to take a good look at him. We felt spring training was not really a good measuring stick for players… He has performed good here, so it will make for a tough decision in that sense. I like what he gives us… I think he handles the game plan very well. The pitchers like throwing to him. He gives them a good target, he gives the umpire a very good look at pitches. And, he also appears to have a short swing, which means he can put some balls in play and he doesn’t run badly for a catcher. So, those are some other things you can do with offensively that you’re somewhat limited to with some catchers.”
David Wright, who was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI:
“I felt that the work that he and HoJo were doing earlier this afternoon, on the path of his bat, and to be able to get that base hit to right field in that manner at that time was huge for him as well as for us. Then, to come up eighth inning and hit it to center field, I think that’s when David is real close, hitting line drives the other way and deep, deep, deep stuff to center field. I feel confident he’s coming out of it and that’s a good sign for us.”
