Quotes: Jerry Manuel, About Last Night

by Matthew Cerrone on April 29th, 2009 at 6:52 am

Mets manager Jerry Manuel talked with reporters after last night’s loss to the Marlins, and had the following to say about:

His team blowing a three-run lead, again, only to be down by three runs, and not fighting back to win the game:

“You have to understand what it takes to get back in to the game.  I mean, three runs shouldn’t be something that’s insurmountable to go a good offensive club.  What we have to do is, we have to really address this because it appears as though when we get in to that position, it’s almost like it’s insurmountable lead… We’re trying to figure out what it is that we do that others team do well in those situations.  And, a lot of probably have to do with our approach in that particular point of the game.  So, we, as a staff, have to get that message to our guys and make it clear as to what we’d like to see…

…the thing that bugs me, is that, the offense disappears… it’s not like they’re unlucky, hitting ropes, but just making outs… it turns in to weak hitting… it’s like the team powers down… the triples go bye bye, nobody is bunting, they’re hitting weak pop ups… etc… this suggests to me some combination of preparedness, adjusting to the bullpen, and a team that is pressing

Quitting, and whether the team experiences a hang-your-head factor, and gets down on themselves late in games:

“No.  No, no, no, no, no.  I’m more thinking of the approach – and I don’t think that we have done as good a job with them.  I don’t think there is one guy who quits.  I think our anxiety takes over at that time, and gets in the way of us performing.  I think we need to control that more, we haven’t done a good job with that.”

Livan Hernandez, who allowed two earned runs and three hits, while striking out five batters, in 5.1 innings pitched:

“Livan did exactly what we asked him to do… For me, at this point in his career, I don’t want to see him go around the lineup too many times.  That was the reason we took him out at that time.”

…the question is, and the reporters asked this of manuel, can livan do this against a team that does not have fish on its uniform
