News: Perez is a Left-Handed Reliever

May 4, 2009 at 17:40 pm · 200 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters Oliver Perez will temporarily move to the bullpen and be used as a left-handed reliever.

Manuel said the team did not ask Perez to accept a minor league assignment.

Manuel said he will use Perez against left-handed batters in situational spots, in addition to working multiple innings.

The 40–year-old Ken Takahashi will start Friday against the Pirates.

…like i said earlier, i believe perez’s issues are confidence and mental, and since i do not know him, nor know how best to treat his ego and psyche, i trust the Mets did what they believe to be the best way to get him through this…

…that said, basically, the Mets now have the most expensive left-handed reliever in baseball… just a thought, but, maybe the better solution would have been to pay Randy Wolf and Joe Biemel a combined $7 million, instead of $13 million for perez and takahashilike i said, just a thought

Only the Mets.

Trade4Pedroia May 4, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Mets excel in cushioning our players, fluffing their pillows and removing ANY and all discomfort that players might feel.

Bucknerfan May 4, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Everyone needs to calm down! Have faith in Omar. Didn’t he go out in the off season and get the #2 pitcher they needed and didn’t he lock up the second baseman before someone could swoop in and steal him?

SourCaroline May 4, 2009 at 6:00 pm

LOL

Clem Kadiddlehopper May 4, 2009 at 6:12 pm

lol Dude, if I calmed down anymore than I am right now I would be in a catatonic state. Please do not direct your statement at everyone. Use a narrow brush and direct it at the people it applies too.

steve333 May 4, 2009 at 6:13 pm

He was joking

Clem Kadiddlehopper May 4, 2009 at 6:24 pm

lol I’m in a catatonic state.

Xavier22 May 4, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Exactly – leave it to Mets management to pick the WORST of the three options available:

1) Send to the minors
2) DL him
3) Make him a reliever.

Now he has NO chance to work out his issues. Great.

shinjosplints17 May 4, 2009 at 6:59 pm

This is not the right way to go about this send him to Buffalo. He needs to start games, he is a starter. We cant use him in a big spot. The guy can’t throw a strike. What if we only use him in long relief or when we are down big, If those situations don’t come up for a little while then he gets no work and doesn’t get any better.

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Mets organization is LOST

Trade4Pedroia May 4, 2009 at 5:47 pm

If only we could unlock the Islands’ time mechanism and banish our front office back in time…

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 5:50 pm

We’ll have Omar turn the donkey wheel so he is banished from the franchise forever.

Agee's Catch May 4, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Is El Duque Richard Alpert, because he never seems to age….

dykstraw May 4, 2009 at 5:42 pm

this is so stupid and therefore expected

PedroMANIA May 4, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Sad, but true. I can’t see how he gets enough work to fix himself any time soon. This has Boras written all over it.

Trade4Pedroia May 4, 2009 at 5:57 pm

You mean the organization that traded Nolan Ryan? You mean the same organization that traded Scott Kazmir?

No!

dykstraw May 4, 2009 at 6:04 pm

remember when omar said ollie was gonna make us forget all about kazmir?

keithstache May 4, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I forget all about Kazmir when Ollie is on the mound. I’m too busy being disgusted by every pitch he throws.

dykstraw May 4, 2009 at 6:25 pm

i’m too busy trying to figure out how to drink three bottles of whiskey with only two hands

DownNDirtyJohan May 4, 2009 at 5:42 pm

This is the worst move out of three options. This is great.

Trade4Pedroia May 4, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Couldn’t be happier for Ollie. What a fantastic day!

craigswandive May 4, 2009 at 5:43 pm

I don’t see how this will help him.

Ollie, Que pasa man??!!!

Sylar May 4, 2009 at 5:43 pm

I have to ask…. are they retarded?

Out of all the moves they could have made, that is by far the worst

Trade4Pedroia May 4, 2009 at 6:17 pm

THIS, ladies and gentlemen are why the Mets are known to be ’soft’ around the league…

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 5:44 pm

when this circus going to end.. What are they thinking?

Trade4Pedroia May 4, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Maybe they were thinking Cirque du Soleil left prematurely and they had to entertain circus lovers?

PelfreyCyYoung09 May 4, 2009 at 5:44 pm

I will laugh if Takahashi throws a no hitter one friday lol Ollie’s confidence will go below zero

DownNDirtyJohan May 4, 2009 at 5:46 pm

How the heck is he going to figure out what’s wrong with him when people are going to boo the heck out of this guy every time??? This seems more and more like a money driven move than a baseball move. This is disappointing.

Agee's Catch May 4, 2009 at 6:27 pm

If he only pitches on the road, teams will cheer when he enters a game

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 5:47 pm

They are going to ask him to be a lefty with that “knee” bothering him….like someone said earlier only the mets…

Clem Kadiddlehopper May 4, 2009 at 6:20 pm

lol I may be and often am wrong but this sounds like a Jeff Wilpon type decision. Unless James L. Dolan is now running the franchise.

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 5:47 pm

The ship has officially sailed. How can you even take this team serious anymore..

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 5:47 pm

The Mets are idiots for this move. I would have put him on the DL with a phantom injury ala Chien Ming Wang. Perez was complaining of a knee injury, there’s your excuse. Then they could have called up an actual useful pitcher (Figs, Kunz, Niese, Gee) to either start or relieve, depending on how they wanted to use Takahashi (it’s evident now he’ll start). Besides, having him pitch out of the bullpen isn’t going to get him stretched out to start. Only starting games (in the minors or extended spring training) does that. Omar and Jeff Wilpon had to fly down to make this brilliant call?

john_oleruds_helmet May 4, 2009 at 5:48 pm

In other news, Mets re-signed Ambiorix Burgos and signed Mel Rojas each to 3 year deals to be co-long men for Perez when he has to get pulled in the 4th.

Clem Kadiddlehopper May 4, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I though Ambiorix Burgos was already in the “pen.”

SantanaClause May 4, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Manuel said the team did not ask Perez to accept a minor league assignment.

WHY THE FU.CK NOT!!!!!!! OMAR MAKE SOME SENSE!!

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 5:49 pm

lol the period doesnt help clause…

Wilford May 4, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Now he can blow 3-4 games a week instead of 1-2.

BeltranMVPlease May 4, 2009 at 6:52 pm

My thoughts exactly.

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Instead of DLing him to find out what is wrong with him and for him to get some work in the minors and rehab..we are going to keep him up here for a few innings here and there….talk about dealing with the issue…
He should be working out his kinks in the minors on a DL stint…use that spot to bring in someone that can contribute something…

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Like I said above, how will this help him? He’s signed for all that money to be a STARTER. Using him in relief is counter-productive. Put him on the DL or ask him to accept a demotion and have him start. This is ridiculous. I feel as if my team is being run by the Short Bus All-Stars. I used to be one of Omar’s biggest supporters, but he’s really making me mad of late…..

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 5:54 pm

agreed…so is manuel(more manuel than omar these days)

HildiMets May 4, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Quite possibly the worst move made by the Mets since Signing Ollie to that 3 yr 36 mil contract. We knew Ollie was a win one/lose one pitcher and still gave him that contract. Why not sign Lowe? Lowe is a know commodity…..

Sigh…this smells like an 81 win season…

Bucknerfan May 4, 2009 at 6:00 pm

81 wins well if thats true the bright side is a new manager who doesn’t coddle players and a new GM who doesn’t fix more than one problem per year.

eDaPS May 4, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Ugh…completely idiotic.

DownNDirtyJohan May 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Ollie is going to be the next Heilman. He’ll be booed out of the city. This is a terrible move.

SantanaClause May 4, 2009 at 5:53 pm

No he wont. Heilman atleast had some trade value.

Wilford May 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Also, Figueroa should be the new starter. He was fine last year. Nothing against Taka but Figueroa has a track record.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Yeah, I think Takahashi is more suited to be the second lefty in the pen, a lefty long man a la Darren Oliver. I guess that’s what they want Perez to do now, but it doesn’t make sense. He’s never been a reliever, now when he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, he’ll be brought in with runners on base? I’m livid right now.

DownNDirtyJohan May 4, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Just like Jerry fell in love with Omir. After 2 2/3 innings of pitching, he gets a start over Figgy. I mean Taka looked good, but I think you need little bit more sample than 2 2/3 innings.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Especially since he hasn’t been stretched out. He’s been working in relief all spring, and now they’re going to give him a 65-70 pitch start. Why not DL Perez, call up Kunz for a few days for an extra guy in the pen, demote Kunz on Friday and bring up Figs/Niese/Gee to start? Really, it’s not rocket science, folks……

eDaPS May 4, 2009 at 6:00 pm

I don’t see how this is going to turn out well at all. Do they think that the team won’t be prepared with a scouting report this time? Geez.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:04 pm

And having him start without being properly stretched out means the bullpen will be used perhaps by the fourth or fifth inning. I thought Takahashi looked good, but he’s not overwhelming. Kind of looks like the type of guy teams will to the second time through the lineup. Just leave him in the pen and bring in someone who might be able to go, say six innings like Figs did against the Brewers?

Wanny2 May 4, 2009 at 6:07 pm

Figueroa needs be reserved for a situation in which he will get an extended stay. There’s no way he’ll come back the next time they deisgnate him for assignment. He apparently contemplated not coming back this time.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:08 pm

Well give him an extended stay and Ollie an extended stay in Siberia….problem solved.

PelfreyCyYoung09 May 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm

The worst thing is, no matter what they decided to do with Ollie it was going to be a bad move.

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm

This team is a mess

TheGameChanger May 4, 2009 at 5:52 pm

This entire organization has a severe learning disability.

The 2009 New York Mets aren’t coming close to making the playoffs this year – and this one falls on the footsteps of the Wilpons and Omar.

You had a damaged product for 2+ years…and you didn’t fix the product.

eDaPS May 4, 2009 at 5:53 pm

I couldn’t imagine they’d use him in the state he’s in right now. So what does that mean? Shorting a bullpen that has already been worked a lot. BRILLIANT!

droseatwork May 4, 2009 at 5:54 pm

This is such a stupid move. God, we are such a terrible team. he should be in FL for extended work to build up his arm strength and get his head right.

WHY ARE WE SO STUPID

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:01 pm

exactly. I was psyched to see santana pitch. You know the only one on the team who cares about winning. Im not spending a dime on this circus.

This team is the biggest pile of dung i have ever come across….

man, words cant describe

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 5:55 pm

This team is a joke….. Only the Mets.

WTH, how is this goon gonna help us in the bullpen. Well, we wont be winning any of the games he pitches in.

We have vegetables running this team….

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 5:57 pm

you know i was excited to go to citifield once school is finished. Now i am way too disgusted…..

We are the laughing stock of baseball….. Even the Yanks are smarter. We have the dumbest people on the planet running this team.

UpstateDave May 4, 2009 at 5:56 pm

C’mon, he’s hardly the most expensive left-handed reliever we’ve ever seen. Remember Zito in the Giants’ bullpen last year? His issues also seemed to be mental, and it looks like he’s ok this year.

Johan4Cy May 4, 2009 at 5:57 pm

how does this help perez? getting very limited work in blowout games or facing two lefty hitters then leaving… wtf…

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 5:58 pm

if they aren’t going to take this seriously then we shouldn’t either. Don’t go to games and support this.

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:02 pm

+1. what a waste of money.

eDaPS May 4, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Hey look at the bright side. Maybe Perez can build his value back up out of the pen and we can use him in a trade for Halladay…………………………………………………………………LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Such a dumb move….I’m flabbergasted. Haha, awesome word.

Dingo19 May 4, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Trying….to…be….positive.

Nahhh, bugger it, this is a stupid move.
Putting a head-case that walks at least a guy per inning into the bullpen? This team has a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock.
Well at least now I have a *really* good reason to drink too much.

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 6:00 pm

What I really don’t get is why did they sign Omar to 3 more yrs? and why didn’t they fire the whole coaching staff last yr?

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:06 pm

This is probably due to Bonehead Fred and Omar. But we cant get rid of the Wimpons….

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:08 pm

God forbid anyone in this organization grow a pair…… btw did u guys read this?

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 6:10 pm

WoW the truth hurts I guess

SourCaroline May 4, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Because this franchise has been so terrible that the Wilpons felt that the general manager who got the Mets to 1 playoff appearance and three other seasons of playoff contention deserves an extension.

Nevermind that they are big time underachievers

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 6:11 pm

They should of kept Steve Philps he did get us to the World series and a playoff

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Unfortunately, I’m beginning to join the anti-Omar brigade. I’ve given him plenty of leeway over the years and thought he was doing a solid job with some boneheaded moves along the way. This, however, may have tipped the scales….

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:03 pm

believe me. there aint no scale on the planet that can measure the stupidity of this move

Maineiac May 4, 2009 at 6:02 pm

On a side note the Buffalo Bisons are 4-18.

It sure isn’t easy being a Mets fan.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:05 pm

At least F-Mart is doing a solid job. .287 with a league-leading 10 doubles to go along with three homers (including two in the last two days). Triple-A teams are usually stocked with a bunch of hangers-on (the Bobby Kieltys of the world, for example). At least Reese Havens and Ike Davis are batting around .300 at St. Lucie……

dykstraw May 4, 2009 at 6:07 pm

they had a great weekend!

last i checked they were 2-17

margie17 May 4, 2009 at 6:03 pm

This is absolutely INSANE!!!!! Unless they put him in pen until his spot comes up on Friday. They send him down to bring up Niese or Redding.

SourCaroline May 4, 2009 at 6:04 pm

I believe this move was very calculated. In the rare event the Mets are blowing a team out, the plan is to bring in Perez in the late innings to make it close again so K-Rod can get the save.

Other than that I agree with everyone who says it makes no sense.

eDaPS May 4, 2009 at 6:07 pm

lol

derxmasta May 4, 2009 at 6:09 pm

SourCaroline May 4, 2009 at 6:14 pm

So much for the more mature Ollie after getting married….

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Really, Omar,,, Really

I’m think its time boys… We cannot let our franchise be run like this. Give them 2 more weeks and lets get organized. Hit the phones, the web, citi field. This cannot stand.

eDaPS May 4, 2009 at 6:11 pm

We should start a massive pool of money and buy the team. Set it up like a corporation with shares determined by amount invested. We can then hire “owners” to handle team operations at that level, except we can toss them if they suck it up.

Ahhh, a guy can dream.

derxmasta May 4, 2009 at 6:08 pm

theyll bring him in for mop up work.
mets up 10-0 by 7th or 8th inning
bring him in

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 6:13 pm

The only positive that can come from this is that Ollie might be able to sloooooooowwllllyyy restore his confidence one batter at a time.

The downsides are obvious – he obviously won’t have time to work out his delivery/repetition problems and can not be trusted in a high leverage situation, particularly when he can’t throw a strike.

The DL and some rehab starts/bullpens was the way to go. The risks far outweigh the benefits as he’s just not suited to pitch in relief with his awful control.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Agreed Wanny,
I don’t see how this helps the team or Ollie. Absolutely the worst option they could have went with….

Wanny2 May 4, 2009 at 6:21 pm

The only other positive I can see is that by keeping him witht he mets Dan Warthen can watch over his progress — but given the overall state of the Mets staff, I’m not certain that’s a very good thing either.

Is Friday Perez’s next scheduled start? Wouldn’t the rain out allow them to skip his next start?

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:19 pm

As to Mett’s suggestion of Joe Beimel — Beimel stinks too.

The only thing he is good at is not giving up home runs. But he lets on way too many runners and rarely pitches an entire inning.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Pretty scary the Nats are considering of moving him to closer when he comes off the DL. Guess things can always be worse (ask the six Nats fans)

marathonmet May 4, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Perez is a mlb five year veteran. Not a small acomplishment, let alone his contract.
His pitching is clearly off. The question is why?
The Mets feel that facing batters in the minors is not the problem. I agree.
The Mets feel that throwing daily with their staff observing and coaching and getting into a couple of games is going to help Perez. I also agree.
Will he be “good ollie” again? I think he will

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:20 pm

I wish I shared your optimism. Working him out of the pen, however, will kill his stamina (which isn’t up to snuff anyway). Even if he gets it back together, he’ll have to build that back up….

marathonmet May 4, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Why will it kill his stamina?
I’m guessing that the coaching staff wants to work him back into form.

dykstraw May 4, 2009 at 6:23 pm

How about a Poll asking us whether or not we want Omar to be fired?

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:21 pm

this is more the omar. the fact is ownership was present and they went ahead with this move. it is more than omar my friend

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Yeah because I honestly believe if it was up to Omar, both Manny and Lowe would be here. But it’s not…..

Moses Magnum May 4, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Yea i agree with you. The Wilpons apparently have much more say than we think. If any fan blames Omar for us not getting Manny, they better think again. It’s probably his fault we didnt get Lowe tho.

This Ollie thing can only get better..even if he does get injured and goes on DL.

Wanny2 May 4, 2009 at 6:34 pm

No doubt. Everyone has known that Omar has repeatedly lobbied for Manny in the past. He took it for the team this offseason by taking the heat on it. When the Wilpons eventually let hm go, you know Omar will tell us that he always wanted to bring Manny in.

Agee's Catch May 4, 2009 at 6:20 pm

I wish we had a guy like Mark Cuban running the club. He would have seen the value of cutting ties with Ollie and bringing in a better starter

Wanny2 May 4, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Other than Lowe, I don’t think there was another realistic free agent option that was clearly better than Ollie. I can say this isn;t hindsight on my part because I lobbied hard here for Lowe (the board was about 50/50 on the issue) but at the same time I did not go nuts about it when I saw Lowe’s contract with Atlanta.

The Yankees made sure no one else was getting CC or AJ — and for those prices and durations they can have them.

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 6:29 pm

That was funny and sad at the same time

PhiloBeddoe May 4, 2009 at 6:31 pm

nice

PhiloBeddoe May 4, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I think this team cares more about public perception then it does winning ballgames

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:31 pm

cant be about public perception or they would stop with bonehead moves….they just dont care

Metfreak May 4, 2009 at 6:31 pm

YES

anotherDLstint May 4, 2009 at 6:35 pm

How can we expect our players to have an edge? when our front office doesn’t have cojones? The Bullpen?… the only silver lining to all this, is that now Ollie will make to the 7th inning…..

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 6:37 pm

Im sorry but if manuel cant get them playing better he should be gone..wouldnt be the first time
per cots contracts
fired 9/04 with 2 years/$4.7M left from the whitesox

The mentality of this team needs to change. The only way to do this is to win. Manuel has cost us several games and now we are going against a good manager in cox…maybe manuel should take some notes.

apocalypto May 4, 2009 at 6:37 pm

maybe they can room Perez with beltran and castillo for a little leadership lesson………….

LIMetfan74 May 4, 2009 at 6:37 pm

Instead of Perez lossing one game a week he a chance to come in a blow a game every day of the week! But its ok he has an upside!

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Well I guess the team has its longman now, albeit a $12 million per year longman. Maybe now Jerry will start using Stokes in higher-leverage situations instead of Sharon Heilgreen……

metsforlife May 4, 2009 at 6:38 pm

This team takes years off my like!!

anotherDLstint May 4, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Yeah, like 22 and counting….

OurFrontOfficeBlows May 4, 2009 at 6:40 pm

how is blowing games gonna boost his confidence??? this team wants to lose.

It just defies logic.

MetsFan4Decades May 4, 2009 at 6:42 pm

This is not the solution, in my opinion. How will this help Ollie at all?
I’ve been basically trying to stay positive so far, but this has me completely baffled.

He’s a 12 Mil starting pitcher. This isn’t how you handle this. You need to get his confidence up, you need to work with him to get him back on track. Putting him in the BP, whether good or bad, will tell them nothing.

I would have left him in the rotation for another start or two, trying to build him up. If that didn’t work, I would ask him to accept assignment to the minors to get right…..

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 6:47 pm

he has such a short leash decades that if he so much as surrenders a walk, manuel will crank up the bullpen. Thing is wasnt his “knee” bothering him earlier today..why not DL him to address that. If you move him to the bullpen that OBVIOUSLY means that his knee isnt that bad

MetsFan4Decades May 4, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I agree. I just don’t see how this BP stint will help his mechanics at all – let alone his confidence which is probably in taters right now…

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 6:51 pm

agreed….

Darth Manuel May 4, 2009 at 6:43 pm

I think the whole point of Jeff going to Atlanta with the team was so that the fans wouldn’t blame Omar for this move. Its an organizational decision..

metfan4lif May 4, 2009 at 6:44 pm

so instead of wanting to slit my wrists once a week, it could be 5 times now. Wait until he blows a 8 run lead in the 6th.’

The Mets organization needs to find their MARBLES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjzVbSE7hfY&feature=related

apocalypto May 4, 2009 at 6:46 pm

At this point I think Oliver should offer some rum to Jobu, couldn’t hurt?

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:49 pm

is bery bery bad to drink Jobu’s rum……

Snort-It-Like-Keith May 4, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Wow. Now I know in most cases us as fans go nuts and yell and say what morons we can do a better job then the Mets management. But this is the most dumbest move you an do.

DL him or send him down to work on what is wrong. This is a joke. The Mets make them selves look dumb all the time with moves like this.

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Ron Darling just killed the decision in the pregame show.

I believe Ron Darling should be the pitching coach.

I believe Keith should be the bench or hitting coach.

If you want the trifecta, make Gary Carter the manager.

brock kingman May 4, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Teufel as manager! Yes on Darling and Keith. Carter can be a cheerleading 3rd base coach; maybe Mookie comes back to coach 1st.

I am not kidding when I say Teufel had has heart and is gritty. Seriously. One of the key cogs in those teams. A no-nonsense guy and a winner. Teufel succeeds Jerry eventually. He has Davey Johnson and Ron Gardenhire written all ovr him.

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:52 pm

Good one. I forgot about Teufel.

Sign me up.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:53 pm

How good would Ron Gardenhire look in a Mets uniform? Never thought I’d utter those words after his putrid playing career, but this guy is a great manager.

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Right now freaking Roger Clemens would make a better manager than this guy we have.

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Roidger would make sure the troops were properly “amped” up if nothing else….

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 7:03 pm

While I don’t condone anything Clemens ever did……..he did have “the edge”.

markzila May 4, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Keeping him in the rotation would be stupid. He has ZERO command of his pitches right now.
Coming into games late and walking everyone in the park for an inning wont help anything either.
He needs to re-find his location if it’s possible over a longer period of time.
1 inning per appearance won’t help his arm strength either.

markzila May 4, 2009 at 6:49 pm

AND they can’t use him at home. NO WAY.

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:52 pm

That’s what I said……no may he pitches at Citi until he does good somewhere else.

MetsFan4Decades May 4, 2009 at 6:52 pm

And NO WAY he gets his confidence back working out of the pen. What the hell are they thinking? I really don’t get this one at all, on any level.

Maybe it’s just me……
However, I did hear Ronnie’s evaluation on the subject and he doesn’t agree either.

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:55 pm

I think this meeting that happened today had some involvement by the union. Just a hunch…..

I think Perez will get “hurt” in the pen within 2 weeks, go to the DL, then wind up in Buffalo rehabbing until mid June.

He’ll come back just as we reach first place, and then he’ll once again kill the team.

=== Food For Thought ===

Before people start writing off putting Oliver Perez in the
bullpen as a bad idea know this.

Oliver Perez/2009
1st 9 Batters
ERA/2.00 IP/9.0 H/5 ER/2 HR/1 BB/4 SO/11 AVG/.161

2ND 9 Batters
ERA/8.10 IP/6.2 H/9 ER/6 HR/1 BB/6 SO/6 AVG/.321

3rd 9 Batters
ERA/29.45 IP/3.2 H/9 ER/12 HR/1 BB/5 SO/1 AVG/.474

If the idea is to build his confidence back up by putting him in
situations that will allow him to succeed then his 1st time thru order
is when he has been at his best.

Also they have another hard throwing
lefty (even though right now his velocity is still a factor) in the pen.

Dirtysanchez May 4, 2009 at 6:50 pm

what about his knee?

The_Voice May 4, 2009 at 6:55 pm

***** THE VOICE *****
LOG VER: 1.2-B

It is obvious that the knee was just a front for a
possible reason to use that would allow putting Perez
on the dl and sent to minors

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:50 pm

By the way, did anyone see Mitch Williams break down Oliver Perez’ delivery ?.

Pretty good I thought.

Basically, what he said was that the front leg was landing too soon and the arm was dragging.

BeltranMVPlease May 4, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I rearely use the word retarded, and it is rarely used in its proper context, but ARE THEY RETARDED?

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:51 pm

And did Jerry Manuel really said he would use it to face lefties when first base was open ?

Did he really say that ?.

LMAO

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:52 pm

First base won’t be open for long when you bring him in…..

markzila May 4, 2009 at 6:56 pm

hahaha!

MetsFan4Decades May 4, 2009 at 6:54 pm

I’m officially on the Ollie band wagon now. I want nothing more than for this kid to prove he can do it, in spite of the inmates running the asylum….

ASod1975 May 4, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Believe me, I want him to prove it as well. When Atlanta signed Lowe, I was all for bringing back Perez. The guy has talent. However, I still fail to see the logic in putting a well-paid starter in the pen, especially since Ollie is having problems with location and stamina. He can only improve on those by starting, but not at the big-league level. Heck, he even gave them an out with the “knee injury” where he could have been DL’d and put on a monthlong rehab assignment if he refused an outright trip to the minors….

fxcarden May 4, 2009 at 6:58 pm

He’ll be doing a lot of side session while in the ‘pen.

BeltranMVPlease May 4, 2009 at 6:54 pm

I just jizzed in my pants.

stickguy May 4, 2009 at 7:09 pm

I was on board for the DL stint.

I guess there are a few pluses to going this way:

- no need to cheat with the phantom DL excuse?
- he can stay with the team and Warthan and johan
- He can get plenty of work doing side sessions and simulated game action, then they can bring him in for an inning (hopefully with a big lead) to try it out

Most important maybe is they don’t have to make a roster move, and worry about calling someone up that might get lost?

although they do have to use him, since it would be a real bad idea to purposely keep the pen a man short.

Plus, taka will be burned for a few days before and after his start.

WOuldn’t it be a kick if taka got pulled after 3, and Ollie came in to pitch 4 strong?

Who knows, maybe the team feels like Mitch W. that it is a mechanical issue that they can easily fix?

And if it doesn’t work, can still play the DL card.

JOBA’S MOM GOT BUSTED FOR DEALING METH

dave27 May 4, 2009 at 7:15 pm

The Mets are cowards. They are being bullied by a headcase with a 9.97 ERA into not doing the right thing for anyone.

And Cerrone’s Beimel comment was moronic.

Fiya Minaya May 4, 2009 at 7:35 pm

What’s worse is that no other teams were bidding for Perez. Minaya essentially gave him a $36 million gift. Awful.

anthroid May 4, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Cerrone I agree with you in some areas but HAVE to cal you out on one point. I agree that Perez was the wrong signing, Garland and Biemel were the signings they should have made. But read back to the posts you made in the offseason, there was no one complaining and agonizing more over randy wolf than you! We would be crying about him at some point or another, he is cheap and sometimes, other than the case with Ollie, you get what you pay for.

nyj0126 May 4, 2009 at 8:15 pm

So Joba’s mom is a meth dealer lol Judging from her picture on TMZ, she sure looks like one. Maybe there’s something wrong with the food out from what ever redneck place he’s from lol

sherlockcollector May 4, 2009 at 8:22 pm

If you watched the game the other day with Perez he did wince once or twice after running to first. My main point is that if you covered the names of the players and just looked at the box scores for the last three seasons you would be hard pressed to be able to tell one team or season apart from each other. Can’t get a hit when it counts, can’t get a ground out or a fly ball when it counts, can’t make a big play when it counts. Delgado looks great and then gets hurt, Sheffield will not be with this team or shouldn’t be for the entire season, it goes, on and on, and on – nothing changes for the better.

metsfan1 May 4, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Just what we need, a lefty reliever who can’t find the strikezone. And what situation will Jerry use to bring in that type of quality. They should have sent him down or DL him. He needs to work innings. One batter here or there won’t help. When he does move back to the rotation he will only be good for 5 innings if you put him in the pen.

mets May 4, 2009 at 9:32 pm

I wrote about why I like Perez in the bullpen you can read it by clicking on mets where it says mets says above this post. It is on metsgo.mlblogs.com

Number57 May 4, 2009 at 10:28 pm

This is going to be bad bad bad. This guy can’t handle Top 1st, no score, no out, no one on base. How will he be able to adapt to situational pitching? This makes no sense, his main problem is his mentality is seriously lacking.
