Note: Mets Limit Newspapers in Clubhouse

By Matthew Cerrone on May 05, 2009, 12:28 pm

Yesterday, the Boston Globe a simple sentence in a notes column that read, “The Mets removed New York newspapers from the clubhouse to get rid of negative vibes.”

Today, Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post adds, “The Mets consider their players’ psyches so fragile that they no longer provide copies of The Post or the other New York tabloid in their Citi Field clubhouse.”

According to Hubbuch, “A source said team management didn’t want the players exposed to the ‘bad vibes’ from the tabloids.’

…well, maybe if they stopped referring to themselves as ‘tabloids,’ this would not have been a problem…

…anyway… from what i can gather, this isn’t for home games, but for road games, because only certain newspapers are available nationally… and so not to play favorites, having some papers in the clubhouse and not others, the team pulled them all – except for USA Today

…this does sound fishy… but, frankly, who cares… the team and players can choose to read what they want to read, or not read what they don’t want to read… if the players don’t care, why should i care…

…so long as they have computers to log on to MetsBlog.com, of course

Instead of censoring the criticism and ‘bad vibes’, why not play above it?

      In New York,

      If you win = adulation
      If you lose = ridicule

These guys are making $$$ millions upon millions of dollars. Deal with it by winning.

Seriously, just win. You can’t sign with NY and think you’re playing in Kansas City.

As for the newspapers, why would any ball player ever read that crap. It has nothing to do with fragility, it’s just shooting yourself in the foot. Nothing good comes from the rag papers, from the players’ perspectives.

Ridiculous comment – has nothing to do with the softness of this team. This a non-story. Shame on Matt for continuing to post about something so trivial.

It’s news because our beloved Mets are softies.

I propose fluffy pillows for them in the dugout. Install a cotton candy machine in the corner of the clubhouse and pay Aunt Jemima to kiss boo-boos on their knees…

When is someone going to step up, say “Shut up Manuel/Horowitz etc etc” and just not care? Bash the papers, bash the critics, bash the phillies and just let loose? or just ignore it and respond to some of these questions with “I don’t know what you’re talking about” Stop being polite and stop taking names.

Of course, management, from Manuel on up, would throw a fit, and the players, probably wisely, don’t want to piss off their bosses. So instead, they get crushed by the lack of confidence from all angles.

I’m actually confident because of this though. Sooner or later, someone’s going to snap, and just not care about all the side crap. and they’ll play better for it. I just wish Manuel wasn’t holding back this team in terms of leadership.

I include management when I say “team” because I think the softness tag deserves to be spread all throughout the organization. Omar finally says something dead-on for once in his tenure here and he can’t even stand by it.

        May 05, 2009, 1:00 pm at 1:00 pm #

I don’t read those tabloids, so why should the team?

Even the management is trying to tell the Mets they suck. Why doesn’t someone give this team some confidence?

      • Trade4Pedroia
        May 05, 2009, 1:17 pm at 1:17 pm #

I think Omar’s little slip (singling Wright and Reyes out for not having ‘edge’) REALLY rubbed them the wrong way. I thought it was wrong considering the Carloses weren’t even mentioned but am glad SOMEONE in that organization said something.

If anything, this team needs MORE criticism, not less…

Hmm. Probably more like 20%. It’s acoustical dynamics: If there are 50,000 people in a stadium and 10,000 of them boo, it will make a loud booing sound throughout.

I won’t boo a struggling player. I might boo a bonehead play, or a player who dogs it. I might boo if a relief pitcher starts an inning with a 2-run lead and walks the first batter.

But IMO the people booing David Wright are just whining. It’s the emotional equivalent of a baby crying for milk. Personally, if I DW pops up and I’m booing him, and then he hits a homer next time up and I’m cheering him, and them he whiffs and I’m booing him, I’m going to start feeling like I’m a horse’s a$$. But that’s just me.

Question, are the Mets still soft if they in 07 and 08 they where one game better and in the playoffs both years?

Just wondering what you people think. I mean we all call them soft. How do they lose that label. What if they make the playoffs this year does not mean they are not soft anymore?

What if the Phillis miss out on the playoffs are they not tough and gritty anymore?

It’s really easy to say they’re babying them but I still think it’s at least removing any negative stuff that might come out of the clubhouse from having these newspapers around. Go ahead and say they need to get tougher but really if you came into work and there was stuff on your coworkers desk criticizing your work every day you’d get irritated.

I can’t buy this logic. If you take a job in the limelight, you’ve got to have thick skin. Just look at the Prez. He’s fodder for every newspaper, blog and late night talk show out there.
There isn’t any one person who has the luxury of all of the people liking them and agreeing with them all of the time. Shouldn’t matter. Just go out and do your job to the best of your abilities. Because when all is said an done, actions speak louder than words.

Apparently, Mets were trying to convince Ollie/Boras to come out and say “I’ll go to the minors and fix my stuff”. Which makes it sounds like Ollie wants to get his head straight and work on his problems. But no, Ollie and Boras are too proud to go down to the minors. I don’t understand. Ollie gets paid regardless. So, he wants to hear all the boos and sit on the bullpen? You know Manuel will not use him any spot of any importance.

Even though this offense still has major MAJOR issues getting the big hit, I have to admit, it is rather comforting knowing that the Mets have a bullpen that can close out games. Parnell came out of nowhere and if he ends up being good you got your 7th, 8th, and 9th innings all sowed up.

Quick, block Metsblog on all players’ computers. We are too negative for their sensitive egos.

    Talk about PARANOIA…

How about telling the media and fans to go F themselves by proving us all wrong? Instead, lets just run and hide from the big bad bully. Aghhh, this organization is so frustrating some times.

    OFF TOPIC

Some stats on HRs and Citi and other ballparks:

The Mets have hit 7 of the 19 HRs at Citi.

The NL average HR per ballpark is 25. This is skewed by four ballparks that have produced almost 40% of the HRs. These are Minute Maid, Miller, CBP, and Chase.

Nine of the 16 ballparks have seen less than the NL average 25 homers. One has exactly 25. So, only 6 of 16 ballparks has seen more than the average.

There have been 48 HRs at CBP (Phila. has hit 20) and 45 at Chase Field (Arizona has hit 22). Interestingly, there have been almost 300 less PAs at CBP than Chase. Bandbox it is.

4.3% of all PAs resulted in a HR at CBP while only 2.1% of PAs resulted in a HR at Citi. Citi’s is tied for 5th lowest in the NL. The average is 2.5%.

The worst ballpark for HRs? The place the Mets hit three last night. Turner. Only 11 so far, including the four last night (for only 1.1% of PAs).

    And, about triples…

Citi has seen 12 (Mets have hit 10 of them). The next highest? Predictably, Turner with 8.

Who in this organization actually thinks things through? This is embarrassing. First, it’s ignorant to remove the papers because said papers will shine a negative light on it, causing more (((bad vibes))). Second, why the f do we have to manage the (((vibes))) in the clubhouse by restricting what’s available to read? Can’t these idiots understand criticism, or at the least, don’t read it? Micro-management at it’s finest… what a joke. Oh, and third, how are they going to read up on joba’s meth-pushing mom without the post???

There are only two newspapers in New York: NY Times and Wall Street Journal. The rest are tabloids or like the National Enquirer.

  47. COviaLIfanatic
    May 05, 2009, 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm #

They are tabloids by definition in that the newspaper is like a tab – in that it doesn’t fold over like the NY Times or the WSJ – which are called broadsheets.

Also, while this is retarded it’s ok in my book. A better thing to do is to make them all run suicides until they puke cause the fragility I keep reading about is making ME puke.

This edge, heart, and grit stuff is so much BS. The layers aren’t fragile. They’re not the ones who banned the papers.

Was it Omar after he put foot in mouth and dissed his own players? Even if what he said were true he shouldn’t have embarrassed his own players publicly. Maybe now he’s trying to cover up for his own lack of tact.

Unless it was Manuel who banned the papers, then it’s not his fault but the fault of the front office. Blame them.

It’s a matter of keeping guys focused, not everyone can read crap that is being dished day in day out from certain media types.
It’s amazing how influential the sport media in NY can even alter a fans perception of certain players by either marginalizing a player (see A-Rod) constantly or pouring acolades on a player to the point where that player can do no wrong (see D. Jeter).
I say keep them out, these columnist’s are the one’s to a vast degree that get fan’s booing on a struggling home team or player by their “sport analysis”.

    May 05, 2009, 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #

Why the hell would they have the Post in the clubhouse anyway? The story here isn’t really that they’re taking them away, it’s that they were ever there at all. Beyond the fact that the Post is journalistically bankrupt (the FOX News of newspapers, essentially), I don’t understand why the team would have newspapers in the room at all. If the players want to read them, they can get subscriptions, can’t they?

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Hubbuch and the Post are self-absorbed hacks.

if the players actually do read tabloids and do affected by their articles, it’s nobody’s but the players’ fault 120%.

  53. Seaver41
    May 05, 2009, 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #

As a journalist myself, I’m 100 percent opposed to Mets management censoring what their players can read in the clubhouse.
This is America, where there’s — supposedly — freedom of choice and freedom of the press.
What does Mets management expect, nothing but glowing prose? As if it’s the Post’s, or any other newspaper’s coverage is making players drop fly balls, walk too many hitters, balk in runs, leave runners in scoring position, or anything else.
    Please!
Further, players are adults and are perfectly capable of deciding for themselves what to read and not read, without management deciding for them.
The other silly thing is that any player with Internet access on a laptop, BlackBerry or iPhone can just as easily read New York newspapers, no matter what management decides to ban.
The other negative effect this may have is players starting to refuse to talk to members of the press — and then how upset will fans be at not being able to read players’ quotes in the newspapers?

    • mouserdz
      May 05, 2009, 6:41 pm at 6:41 pm #

I guess technically it might be’censorship’, but it’s hardly anything worth making a fuss about. It’s not like the mets are going to fine the players if they’re caught reading there own copy of the tabloids. They’re simply not distributing in the clubhouse. Should us fans be considered censored because they don’t sell tabloids at the ballpark? I’m sure if a player brings in his own copy of these tabloids, it won’t be a big deal.

“The Mets consider their players’ psyches so fragile that they no longer provide copies of The Post or the other New York tabloid in their Citi Field clubhouse.” =/= “anyway… from what i can gather, this isn’t for home games, but for road games,”

so what’s the real story here?

they should take a match to the papers and stick it close the the rear ends of the players to light a fire under them. i cant believe the stuff that is reported on, and if this is indeed true, these guys should be playing mixed softball
