News: Perez DL’d, Niese To Start Friday

by Mike Nichols on May 6th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Oliver Perez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with patella tendinitis, according to Omar Minaya, who talked with reporters following the game.

“I felt like I could continue to pitch, but I want to get healthy and I want to feel better,” Perez told reporters following tonight’s game.  “It’s a good decision, because I want to be healthy all season long and try to help my team.”

Taking Perez’s spot on the 25-man roster will be Jonathan Niese, who will make his first start of 2009 on Friday.

Niese is 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Buffalo this season.

Post Game: Mets 1 Phillies 0

by Regis Courtemanche on May 6th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

The Mets (13–13) defeated the Phillies (14–11) by the score of 1 to 0 at Citi Field tonight.

For a full recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.

The least you should know

  • Johan Santana went 7 innings, allowing no runs, 2 hits, 3 walks, and had 10 strikeouts. His ERA is now a paltry 0.92.  He earned this win to say the least.  Santana’s change-up was working wonders on the Phillies’ bats, and his location was spot on – another truly amazing outing tonight.
  • Chan Ho Park was also tremendous tonight, going 6 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.   He actually had a no-hitter through 5 until Daniel Murphy hit a double.
  • The only run came in the seventh. Fernando Tatis hit a broken bat dribbler to Pedro Feliz who errantly threw the ball past Ryan HowardCarlos Delgado scored despite Razor Shines trying to hold him back.
  • Chase Utley hit a Citizen’s Bank Park home run…too bad he was at Citi Field.
  • Francisco Rodriguez had a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to earn the save.

Other Observations

  • Classic pitcher’s duel.
  • The walls in foul territory are an accident waiting to happen.
  • Jayson Werth was useless against Santana’s change-up, striking out 3 times, as did Ryan Howard.
  • Carlos Delgado used two hands, and the crowd appreciated it.
  • The Mets have won 4 of their last 5 games.
  • Two hits…seriously?

Key moments

Game Ball

  • Goes to Johan Santana for enduring the stress of another nail-biter, and for obviously pitching brilliantly yet again.

Mike Pelfrey takes the hill tomorrow night against the crafty veteran Jamie Moyer, starting at 7:10 p.m.

    Stat: Power Home and Away

by Regis Courtemanche on May 6th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

clipboard014In 12 home games this season, the Mets have hit seven home runs and ten triples.

In 13 away games, they’ve hit 12 home runs and just two triples.

The Mets’ team record for triples in a season is 47, and we are just 15% of the way through the year.

…i’d be interested to see where most of the triples were hit, but my money is on right center which measures 415 feet…i’ve been at citi for a few of these triples, and that’s where they always wind up…off the bat i swore they were home runs too…

    Interview: Strawberry and his Book

by Matthew Cerrone on May 6th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

9780061704208Last week, I spent a few minutes talking with Darryl Strawberry about his new book, Straw, which you can learn more about and purchase by clicking here.

Strawberry should be proud of the book, which I read, and highly recommend.  He writes of the difficult relationship with his father, the highs and lows of his baseball career, the drugs, partying, allegations of domestic violence, leaving the Mets for Los Angeles, going through rehab, and his journey to being the happy and peaceful man he is today.

    Read: Who Are The Mets

by Regis Courtemanche on May 6th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

clipboard02In Newsday, David Lennon asks, “So who are these Mets? The soft, smiling do-gooders as characterized by their own general manager last weekend? Or the serious, take-care-of-business grinders who swept the Braves out of Turner Field in this two-game mini-series?”

“When you win, you have energy and passion,” David Wright told reporters yesterday.  “When things aren’t going so well, it’s easy to pick apart things like that.  We’ve got a good team.  We’ve got good guys on this team.  We’re well-prepared.  We’re intense.  When you win, that’s a plus - and when you lose, you start looking for reasons why.”

…what came first, the passion or the wins…it’s so hard to tell whether or not the Mets win because of an attitude shift, or if their attitude shifts only when they win – maybe their attitude is always the same as wright suggests…grit does not hit a curveball or catch a pop-up, but i think that in a competitive sport such as baseball, the drive to win, however that manifests itself, does factor in over 162 games…

    Read: The Perez Situation

by Regis Courtemanche on May 6th, 2009 at 11:07 am

Oliver Perez told reporters yesterday that the team never discussed a trip to the minor leagues with him, instead the team spoke with his agent, Scott Boras.

According to the Daily News, however, Omar Minaya said he first spoke to Boras after the team’s announcement that Perez would be sent to the bullpen.

“I think we made a really good move,” Perez told reporters before yesterday’s game.  “I wasn’t doing my job as a starting pitcher. That’s why they sent me to the bullpen - to get my confidence back… I understand what I have to do.  All my teammates here tell me, ‘You can do this,’ and, ‘You’re better than that.  You have to keep working and try to get back.’… I have to keep working to get back.”

In a report for Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll writes:

“The Mets are selling this as temporary and the problems as mechanical, but in Indianapolis, where he was sent a few years ago after having the same issues with the Pirates, no one seemed surprised.  ‘He came down here and was supposed to work on things, but he just reminded people how much money he was making anyway,’ said one front-office member.  There’s a lesson to learn here in that Perez did come back, but only after a trade and some work with Rick Peterson, then the pitching coach for the Mets.  No one, most importantly the Mets, seems to know what the fix might be this time, or when he’ll get back.  Don’t be surprised if we hear more about that knee in the near future.”

…i too wonder if the knee issue is the crutch, no pun intended, that the Mets are using to hide from the real issues, but i resign to the fact that i just don’t fully understand the situation from where i am at this point in time…it just seemed too conveniently timed…

Read: Today in the NL East

by Joe Hamrahi on May 6th, 2009 at 11:00 am

Edinson Volquez pitched 3-hit ball over 8 scoreless innings, and Brandon Phillips supplied the offense with 3 hits, a home run and 6 RBI as the Reds blanked the Marlins on Tuesday, 7-0.

The loss drops Florida to 15-12 and a 1/2 game back of the first place Phillies. The Marlins continue their homestand today when the Braves come to town to start another 2-game series.phillies-hat

In St. Louis, Shane Victorino led the charge for Philadelphia, going 4-for-5 with a double, home run, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored, and Jayson Werth homered for the second straight night to propel the Phillies to a 10-7 win over the Cardinals.

With the sweep of the series in St. Louis, Philadelphia leaves for Citi Field atop the National League East.

…Ok, so I said I wouldn’t be surprised if the Phillies were in first place by the end of last week. I was off by two days.

The Astros and Nationals put on an offensive display in Washington D.C. for over 10 innings before the rains came and put a stop to the game tied at 10. The suspended game will resume on July 9th in Houston at Minute Maid Park.nationals-hat

Elijah Dukes and Cristian Guzman each hit home runs and knocked in 2 for Washington while Ryan Zimmerman collected 2 hits and ran his hitting streak to 23 games.

Despite the suspension, Tuesday’s stats will count and be reflected in the current official league statistics.

Next up for Washington is a west coast trip that kicks off today in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

In player news…Florida’s Scott Proctor will see Dr. James Andrews about the pain he is feeling in his right elbow. The team and Proctor have not ruled out the possibility of additional surgery.

    Note: The Adventures of K-Rod

by Matthew Cerrone on May 6th, 2009 at 9:06 am

Francisco Rodriguez took on seven hitters in the ninth inning last night, during which the Mets committed two errors, allowing two runs to score, but he got Chipper Jones to fly out to right-center field to end the game.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com, last night was the second time this season that Rodriguez recorded a save despite allowing more than one run – something he had only done twice during his entire career with the Angels.

Rodriguez is seven for seven in save opportunities this season, with 16 strike outs in 11.2 innings pitched, during which opponents are hitting .163 against him.

Speaking of Delgado’s dropped pop up in the ninth, Adam Rubin writes the following in a post to his blog for the Daily News:

Carlos Delgado found it appropriate to remind everyone that he had two hits and two RBI… Of course, had the first baseman not dropped Omar Infante‘s routine pop-up on what would have been the game’s final out, and had two unearned runs not scored as a result, Delgado’s two-run ninth-inning single would have been a footnote.  Delgado didn’t have much of an explanation for dropping the ball.”

Rubin also provides other notes from last night’s game, including information on Carlos Beltran, Ramon Castro and Tim Redding.
