Post Game: Mets 1 Phillies 0
By Regis Courtemanche - May 6, 2009 9:53 pm

The Mets (13–13) defeated the Phillies (14–11) by the score of 1 to 0 at Citi Field tonight.

For a full recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.

The least you should know

  • Johan Santana went 7 innings, allowing no runs, 2 hits, 3 walks, and had 10 strikeouts. His ERA is now a paltry 0.92.  He earned this win to say the least.  Santana’s change-up was working wonders on the Phillies’ bats, and his location was spot on – another truly amazing outing tonight.
  • Chan Ho Park was also tremendous tonight, going 6 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.   He actually had a no-hitter through 5 until Daniel Murphy hit a double.
  • The only run came in the seventh. Fernando Tatis hit a broken bat dribbler to Pedro Feliz who errantly threw the ball past Ryan Howard.  Carlos Delgado scored despite Razor Shines trying to hold him back.
  • Chase Utley hit a Citizen’s Bank Park home run…too bad he was at Citi Field.
  • Francisco Rodriguez had a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to earn the save.

Other Observations

  • Classic pitcher’s duel.
  • The walls in foul territory are an accident waiting to happen.
  • Jayson Werth was useless against Santana’s change-up, striking out 3 times, as did Ryan Howard.
  • Carlos Delgado used two hands, and the crowd appreciated it.
  • The Mets have won 4 of their last 5 games.
  • Two hits…seriously?

Key moments

  • Pedro Feliciano squeaked out of a huge jam in the eighth by striking out Ryan Howard with Shane Victorino lurking on third base.

Game Ball

  • Goes to Johan Santana for enduring the stress of another nail-biter, and for obviously pitching brilliantly yet again.

Mike Pelfrey takes the hill tomorrow night against the crafty veteran Jamie Moyer, starting at 7:10 p.m.

GOD BLESS YOU JOHAN SANTANA!! You truly are the best pitcher in baseball and we Met fans are privledged to watch you display your craft every fifth day!!

BTW K-Rod where have you been all my Met life!

  2. MetsFan4Decades says:

Love these pitching duels – especially when we win the game.

Wow – Santana – nothing left to say. Just wow…

And thank God – this is not our 2008 bull pen….

    Great game.

    • reillys5 says:

      awesome, awesome win tonight

    • mos1982 says:

There are very few players who have received 9-figure contracts who you can say are worth every penny. I have to say that so far at $137.5 million Johan is a bargain when compared to some of the other deals out there. I’m blown away watching him every 5 days and love the way he competes. He’s just amazing.

  3. kevinz says:

Trying to go with a subtle, humorous, pick-and-choose type of recap, eh Regis?

I appreciate the gesture and understand maybe it’s your style, but I think for those readers who didn’t watch the game (i.e. the readers who probably are most interested in these sorts of recaps) would probably prefer a more direct, conclusive sort of recap like the ones Matt uses. Right now, this recap here seems like it’s speaking in a “you-had-to-be-there” sort of tone.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Really? I thought he touched on the high points of the game, especially as there weren’t many since it was a pitchers duel. I like these new post game recaps.

To each his own, I guess.

      • kevinz says:

Reading it again in hindsight, I think everything’s pretty nice except for the “Other Observations” list, which reads more like a list of inside jokes with the reader.

I enjoyed this ‘happy recap’, because I watched the game. But if didn’t….I’d probably feel as if it leaves me in the dark.

    • Deadpanwalking says:

ESPN usually posts that sort of recap a few minutes after the game, fyi.

  4. Metsfan46years says:

Well we had one hell of a blowout tonight

  5. docgoodens8ball says:

I did like Delgado’s tip of the cap after the two handed catch. Classy.

  6. HateThisBullpen says:

Dare I say it? This was a 2006 style win

  7. Metsfan46years says:

the 2008 pen would have walked the first 2 guys and then give up a triple

  8. PAPDOG67 says:

Good to see we passed our defensive ineptitude on to the Phils for tonight. They better go watch Tom Emanski’s video before tomorrow’s game. Great win tonight!!!

  9. QnsNative718 says:

    Well done!

  10. Dirtysanchez says:

gotta love baseball…johan loses a game against jj due to unearned runs..johan wins tonights game due to an unearned run…

  11. Dirtysanchez says:

seems manuel is FINALLY letting reyes fly out there on the basepaths and see what happens….

  12. SadClownGoodMets says:

The run support for Santana really is amazing. However, Dan Haren has the second-lowest ERA in the NL and he gets the 2nd least run support of any starter in the majors….he’s got a 3-3 record to go with his 1.47 ERA. Then again, Johan is getting nearly a full run less than any other SP in baseball, which is amazing.

It’s nice to see the Phillies lose an error. Daniel Murphy can rest easy – it happens to other players too :)

  13. dominicanboy08 says:

wow. johan is winning the Cy Young this year. I mean he is the only pitcher dominating the national league.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

if he continues like this….no question.
Zack may get it in the AL but Johan is looking as the Cy young favorite for the NL

    • PAPDOG67 says:

Easy there, Haren & Billingsley are doing pretty well also. Long way to go.

  14. sellitman says:

Imagine if Santana ever got some run support? It’s great having a Hall Of fame pitcher on our staff once again.

    • curiojeff says:

It’s particularly great to get a Hall of Fame pitcher on our staff whose best years aren’t clearly and sadly behind him. Can you say… Saberhagen… Viola… ?

    • Ceetar says:

      well..yeah.

but don’t forget we had a hall of fame pitcher on the mound to start the final game of the 2007 season too.

      • shea73 says:

But don’t forget. Even on his best nights, that hall of famer doesn’t compare with Santana.

        • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

You’re understating Glavine’s career. In the 1995 World Series Glavine won Game Two and came back to win the clincher, Game Six, allowing just one hit in eight innings. For his effort, he was named World Series Most Valuable Player. Also Glavine won the Cy Young Award in 1991 and 1998, and finished second or third on four other occasions.

    • wladair says:

Kudos to Santana and Park alike, as much as people complain about the Mets not giving run support to Santana, the pitchers he has been opposing have done great jobs.

  15. Wilford says:

Awesome game. I am pumped up to go to Citi tomorrow, and on Monday to see the GOD of pitching himself.

  16. My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

Johan deserves more than the game ball he deserves people’s first born or unborn first children. He deserves the key to the city, never having to pay for a meal or a beer anytime he’s on the Eastern seaboard and a harem the size of which we cannot even come close to fathoming.

    • wladair says:

Ok, now things are really getting carried away. Santana is the pitching ace, nothing more nothing less.

  17. PAPDOG67 says:

Did anyone catch Werth in the dugout after the game?? It looked like they just lost the WS?? I know they don’t like us, but are we in their head that bad??

    • Dirtysanchez says:

well he cost their team the game..so yea he should feel bad? Who wouldnt?

    • Wilford says:

      Yes.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

He was just sitting there because he was stuck to some grit.

      • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

Like you I believe this “grit” nonsense is just that, nonsense. But can’t you let it go for one night and just enjoy an outstanding baseball game? It seems Metsblog has gotten into your head.

BTW a retort toyour comment would have been “Yes, he was stuck to the same grit that won a championship for them last year.”

    • PimpinAintEasley says:

Yeah he was pissed because he realized reality when all of us in right field tonight started chanting “Werth Loves Dick”

  18. MetsFan4Decades says:

Watching Johan on the post game show. He’s got the broadest shoulders – span – I’ve ever seen. Especially for a man that’s not very tall. Serves him well, that’s for sure.

And I sure am glad he’s a NY Met.

    • PAPDOG67 says:

no one, and I mean no one beats Phil Jackson’s shoulder span.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Have to take your word for it as I don’t know who that is….

        • ravi3 says:

          I hope you are kidding?

          • MetsFan4Decades says:

No sorry, not kidding. Baseball’s my game. Don’t follow any other sport except horse racing.

I know, just from watching sports news and such, who some big names are from other sports but don’t recognize that one.

        • PAPDOG67 says:

Wow, I don’t watch the NBA anymore, but the guy does have 9 titles. He’s HC for the Lakers. Played most of his career for the Knicks.

          • jamesi11 says:

Has anybody seen Dwight Howards shoulders and shoulder span…..its unbelievable.

    • iluvmookie says:

Makes sense…he’s been carrying this team on his shoulders for the first month of the season.

  19. smm140 says:

after the first few weeks of the season i decided that i was only gonna watch the johan starts. this team is too frustrating to watch without him. i don’t really find anything encouraging about today’s win, except johan. but he’s never been a question mark. this offense has got to get it in gear. the only pitchers in either league that could’ve won this game were johan or greinke. what has to happen for these guys to get any of johan’s attitude or mojo or whatever???

    • curiojeff says:

Dude, you gotta watch your team even when their ace isn’t on the hill. To only watch when you’re assured a win is… well… un-Metropolitan.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, come on. Fans complain that the team has no balls, no guts. Gotta work both ways.
        Support the team.

        • smm140 says:

come on. i’m not just watching when “guaranteed a win” … clearly the mets have spoiled 2/7 starts for him already. far from a guarantee. it’s not about winning or losing. it’s about watching a guy who will do anything to win. the rest of the guys don’t seem to care about winning as much as i do. i shouldn’t care more than the team on the field. if they all played like santana and lost 100 games, i’d still watch.

  20. MW1218 says:

Ready Mets fans? Get ready to put this in your profiles, email it to any Philly fans you know….get ready to spread it all over the web. We’ll have t-shirts made. You ready for the 2009 Mets slogan?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7krz_Krn4k

    YOU. AIN’T. SO. BAD.

They want to take Ya Gotta Believe from us?! We’ll take Rocky from them! And it all fits. Think about it. Rocky, resting on his laurels, loses the title. He’s embarassed. He’s down. But he comes back. And it didn’t take laps in a pool, or hours in a sweaty gym for us. It took a decent bullpen. It’s starting to come together. It’ll keep going with good vibes.

    Phillies. YOU. AIN’T. SO. BAD

  21. OurFrontOfficeBlows says:

yes DL for Ollie. Niese on Friday

  22. MetsFan4Decades says:

Whoa – Omar just announcing that Ollie is going on the DL. MRI reveals tendonitis of the right knee.

    Niese will start on Friday.

  23. Ceetar says:

See what happens when the Phillies play good teams, with good pitching? Awwwww, so sad.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

Gotta give you props on that, Ceet. You’ve been calling it for weeks now. Kudos.

    • Clem Kadiddlehopper says:

The Phillies faced great pitching tonight and outstanding pitching will shut down outstanding hitting (see 1973 playoffs against the Big Red Machine). It also helps to face the Phillies in Yellowstone park. :)

  24. Wilford says:

Good riddance to Oliver. How long can this keep him out of here?

  25. shamWOWmets says:

Ollie on the DL!!! what took them so long?

    • gipperPDX says:

Why do it earlier – this means it will be that much later before they have to decide whether / how to bring him back.

  26. npanzeca says:

    Niese makes the start Friday.

  27. npanzeca says:

Hopefully this puts to rest what was wrong with Ollie and now he can get back soon and healthy.

  28. OurFrontOfficeBlows says:

hopefully he stays there for a while until he can get things sorted out and give us a chance to win.

Niese, show us what u got…

  29. 2009_believe says:

the DL, Niese? how do we feel about this?

  30. npanzeca says:

I’m ready to see what the kid has.

  31. VelvetFoot says:

Could someone clarify why Ken Takahashi is not pitching on Fri?

    • npanzeca says:

Because he isn’t stretched out and cant throw more than about 50-60 pitches.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

’cause Ollie’s on the DL now. Have room to bring someone up. We don’t need another reliever right now. Bring Niese up, see what he can do against the Pirates. Tak and Stokes ready in the BP just in case….

  32. dominicanboy08 says:

wow ollie to the DL , niese to start on friday night…..

  33. Adam90 says:

What makes me more happy is every time KRod gets a save, he irritates the Philly fans even more pointing to the sky LOL.

  34. gipperPDX says:

Man, just finished watching game on DVR about 15 minutes ago…..Johan is without a doubt the best pitcher we’ve had here since Doc. I just wish we had a Ronnie and El Sid behind him in the rotation!

    Still….what a joy to watch!

  35. groverland1 says:

Omars trade for santana will go down as one of the best trades in baseball in many years by any team. Santana should have won the Cy Young last year, and this year he looks even better. BTW–3 years 36 mill for K Rod looks pretty amazing so far. Not much more then the Yankees gave Farnsworth a few years ago to be a set up man.

  36. therealsince86 says:

Total lack of heart and gritt by the Phillies. Tons of runners left in scoring position and big time focus issues that lead to 3 errors. Heartless.

  37. rigsay says:

    Great win tonight!

    Couple thoughts:
Had zero confidence in Feliciano. Nice to see he can still get anyone out.

    Bats better wake up tomorrow.

Santana is God. And K-Rod is Jesus.

    Tomorrow’s lineup (guess)

    Reyes
    Church
    Beltran
    Wright
    Sheffield LF
    Tatis 1B
    Castro
    Castillo
    Pelf

Church is ice cold, but maybe batting him 2nd like last yr will jump start him.

  38. HateThisBullpen says:

Feliciano is soooo much better when he doesn’t have to pitch all the time. If Brian Stokes can come back (and we can get rid of Sean Green), maybe this bullpen really can be the difference.

  39. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I almost had you guys tonight. I told you I was feelin good!

  40. NYM4LIFE94 says:

    What happened to Brian Stokes?

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

nothing…the guy just hasnt figured out we have the best bullpen in baseball yet

  41. derxmasta says:

why does johan always have to pitch against the other teams Aces?!
We can never generate any runs! or hits!

    • darknova says:

To be fair, Chan Ho Park is NOT an ace. I don’t think anyone, even in Philly, expected him to pitch that well last night. He just had some nasty stuff going, unlike the past few years. Yes, the lack of run support for Johan is almost criminal, but that’s what you should expect as an ace pitching against other aces. This will balance out as other teams have their rotations shift due to injuries and off days/rainouts.

      • wladair says:

Thank you, a voice of reason. I really don’t get how people can actually believe that mets hitters purposely hold back out of spite when Santana pitches, talk about criminal……

  42. Caligula says:

    Best part of the game..

    The “Johan Soccer Play”

    that was just amazing.

    saved us a base hit.

  43. MetFanInCali says:

What a “gritty” win. We living on the “edge” for a little bit, but we showed “heart.”

    “Just win baby.” -Al Davis

“Everything else is cream cheese.” Coach Finstock from Teen Wolf

  44. biomarco5 says:

    Johan for President

i love watching that guy pitch…watching him challenge Howard, made Werth look like a little leaguer … Amazing.

I miss D. Wright’s old swing, the line drive to RF swing, people get all excited about him hitting to RF lately but he’s hitting flyballs with that upper cut of his, he used to hit riffle shots all over. he’s still a great player, but he’s developed an average swing. he’ll turn it around

    • darknova says:

Wright’s problem is the same as Ollie’s problem: his head. Where Ollie doesn’t stay focused, thus losing his mechanics, Wright thinks and tinkers too much, thus losing his mechanics. His shoulders are moving completely wrong through his swing. Someone needs to plant him in front of a tape of every AB he had the first half of 06. Drill that beautiful swing into his head.

And yes, Johan Santana is nothing short of a god. He went out there and just completely dominated a great lineup. This ain’t no Nationals team, Philly, you can’t pad your stats with us. :)

      • biomarco5 says:

instead of plowing money into scouting and development, the mets should finance the cloning of Santana. Return of Investment :)

      • wlaadair says:

Are you volunteering to plant Wright in front of the AB tapes from 2006? For everyone who thinks that they are more qualified to teach hitting than HoJo and Manuel, volunteer your time at the batting cages with these guys in stead of just wasting everyone’s time rehashing the same old line each day.

  45. just-mlb says:

So is it fair to say that Maine/Wright have the same problem?
