Note: L’Millz and the All Star Ballot

May 7, 2009 at 14:07 pm · 89 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The great poet Lastings Milledge once said, in the song Bend Your Knees, “I’m the king of all bling, came to lay down the evidence; not George Bush, but L. Millz be the President.”

…well, he may not be the President… but, he may end up being a starting outfielder in the All-Star Game…

Milledge is currently in Triple-A, since being demoted by the Nationals earlier this season.  Yet, he is still listed on the ballot from MLB for the National League All-Star Team.

So, the popular Red Sox site, Sons of Sam Horn, is encouraging Red Sox fans to vote Milledge in as a starting outfielder, writing:

“Milledge is on the NL All-Star ballot.  He needs to make the team.  Nothing would be more NatsTown than having the Natinals’ (lone?) All-Star game representative be a AAA player for whom the organization has no plan.”

In a post to Big League Stew, ‘Duk writes, “Throw in Nats fans like Chris Needham who wish to see their franchise shamed and scheming baseball bloggers like yours truly and maybe there’s a chance to generate some headlines with inflated vote totals.”

speaking of Milledge, SNY’s Ted Berg uses this image for the wallpaper on his laptop, and i laugh every time i see it

LOL, where did Ted find that?

Ted Berg May 7, 2009 at 3:06 pm

I found it on the AP wire when I was looking for pictures of the new Nats park last year. It’s from their move-in day, which takes some of the luster off — especially since we’ve now seen the Mets all dressed up moving into Citi Field this year. But still, with the field lit up like that and Milledge tucking in his shirt and everything, something about it just looks like the poster for a movie I’d really want to see. What’s in the briefcase, Dmitri?

udontmesswiththejohan May 7, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Outstanding job Berg. I keep finding myself going back to look at it again. I choose to imagine them heading to a gentleman’s club.

Ted Berg May 7, 2009 at 3:20 pm

I think it’s more complex than that.

GravediggerHebner May 7, 2009 at 3:46 pm

There is something more complex to a professional athlete than “making it rain?”

Ted Berg May 7, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Maybe not, I was just seizing an opportunity to quote Half Baked. But when you open your computer to that picture every morning, you come up with plenty of stories of where they might be coming from and where they could be going, and what could be in that briefcase.

dave27 May 7, 2009 at 2:13 pm

We have to fight against this…clueless Mets fans will still lament who we traded an “All-Star” like Milledge away.

Seriously, Milledge was Bowden’s obsession dating to his days in Cincy. With Bowden gone, they really don’t have a plan for him.

derxmasta May 7, 2009 at 2:15 pm

trade schneider for l’mills!

Chan Ho Parking Lot May 7, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Why bother trading him? Just DFA.

derxmasta May 7, 2009 at 2:49 pm

he will be the edge minaya is looking for

saltygary May 7, 2009 at 2:16 pm

ROFL on that image.

Lastings = Sanjaya ?

Xavier22 May 7, 2009 at 2:18 pm

No thanks, I want the NL to win an All Star game for once.

Beltran, Beltran, Beltran! Vote early, vote often.

BeltranMVPlease May 7, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Amen.

dykstraw May 7, 2009 at 2:25 pm

let’s get this done mets fans

stumped1 May 7, 2009 at 2:25 pm

might as well write in vic diaz and willy mo pena to fill out the dream outfield that so many wanted a few years back.

TheBigTicket May 7, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Does anyone have an idea where I can get an mp3 of L. Millzs’ rap album? I remember scouring the web for it last year with no avail. Any thoughts?

SPR May 7, 2009 at 2:38 pm

You can always try the Hype Machine, a good source for quasi-legal MP3s in general, LMillz or not.

Google it. Can’t hyperlink here.

zen May 7, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Why not? Beltran made the all-star game in 2005 with the same stats that Milledge had last year.

daved292 May 7, 2009 at 2:30 pm

this is ridiculous. the only player that would be in the all star is zimmerman or dunn. thats it. we should really focus on getting beltran on the all star. oh and there is no doubt johan will start for the nl. imagine that johan vs. greinke in the all star. lets hope.

absentminded May 7, 2009 at 2:30 pm

This is the game that decides the World Series home field? Absurd.

KevnCt May 7, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Agreed. With Bud asleep at the wheel all these years and feigning ignorance about steroids, etc, etc, what better way for the majority of fans to protest. Most despise the idea of an exhibition game outcome determining home field, so why not elect a NON Allstar team! Imagine millions of votes cast for the most undeserving! A PR nightmare for Bud and possibly a way to get MLB to revisit the whole idea!

dominicanboy08 May 7, 2009 at 2:32 pm

this is today’s lineup, manuel just said of WFAN.

MetsFan4Decades May 7, 2009 at 2:56 pm

There just putting the tarp on out at Citi so no batting practice happening right now. Haven’t seen a weather report for that area but hopefully rain will stop by 7pm.
Raining and thundering right now here on the Jersey shore.

derxmasta May 7, 2009 at 2:58 pm

if the game is called i hope its called early

let’s keep on replying to the replies. it’ll be like someone watching movie about someone watching a movie, about someone watching a movie…

ensiferum May 7, 2009 at 2:58 pm

weather.com indicates that it will clear somewhere around 7 or 8 tonight with skies being partly cloudy..

charlie_s May 7, 2009 at 2:33 pm

what the red sox site (probably) doesn’t say is that he’d like to have the al win so his team might have home field in the ws.

jedimynd May 7, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Whats so funny about that laptop image??

cval May 7, 2009 at 2:41 pm

I didn’t get it either

derxmasta May 7, 2009 at 2:50 pm

maybe somebody changed it?
some earlier poster said something abotu sanjaya.
i dont see it

charlie_s May 7, 2009 at 2:54 pm

sunjaya is a reference to voting for someone undeserving, as was the case when many people voted for sunjaya when he was in american idol, but sucked.

voting for lmillz is like voting for sunjaya.

derxmasta May 7, 2009 at 2:56 pm

thanks for clearing it up
because he had
rofl on the image
then the sanjaya reference.

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I just think it looks funny that L-Millz and Dmitri Young are walkign on the field at Natinals Park with suits on. L-Millz is strutting like he’s a perrenial All-Star and the Meat Hook is just – meaty.

mrose May 7, 2009 at 2:37 pm

isn’t that a nats site? not red sox?

mrose May 7, 2009 at 2:51 pm

my bad, i should try reading

Mr. Mets Butler May 7, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Dmitri Young looks like an NFL linemen…lol

Should we enter Mex?

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:08 pm

dude, that is so on topic. something that fantastic is always on topic. awesome.

jws366 May 7, 2009 at 2:50 pm

I think we should also remember to vote for Manny to make the all-star game. Even with 50 games out he’s still probably the best hitting outfielder in baseball.

charlie_s May 7, 2009 at 2:52 pm

i hope your joking…

jws366 May 7, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Why would I be joking? I was under the impression that the All-Star game was supposed to showcase the best talent in baseball on one field at the same time. Manny is one of those players.

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Manny is a cheater and a fraud. I don’t want frauds in the game, do you?

jws366 May 7, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Give me a break man. How can you honestly root for guys like Carlos Delgado and pretend you don’t condone steroid use. Its easy to point fingers until its your own player. The fact of the matter is, they all did or are doing it.

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I disagree completely that they all did or are doing it. I personally believe that Reyes, Wright, Beltran are clean. As for Delgado, yeah he may have used (although I would point out that his father is bigger than him). You can’t make a blanket statement and say they all used. That’s the biggest cop out that anyone can take on this subject.

charlie_s May 7, 2009 at 5:53 pm

this is very simple. manny got caught, therefore i don’t want to see him in the all-star game. why is that a difficult concept to grasp? the other guys that might be doing it, haven’t been caught, so i would rather avoid a witch hunt or just lumping all in the bucket with manny. he cheated and was caught. when anyone gets caught, i don’t celebrate them or their careers.

jws366 May 8, 2009 at 2:56 am

ok, if you dont want to win the all star game and not have home field advantage in the WS then i guess thats fair

=== Did You Know? ===

The Mets won their series opener with the Phillies,
and for the second time this season Francisco
Rodriguez saved a 1-0 victory for Johan Santana
(the other was on April 18 against the Brewers,
also at Citi Field).
There have been 20 other pairs of teammates who
notched a win and a save in a pair of 1-0 games
in the same season, but Santana and Rodriguez
are the first to do it twice before the end of
May.

And you wonder why unemployment rates are so high.

Snort-It-Like-Keith May 7, 2009 at 3:02 pm

lol what if this really happened? What would MLB do? I mean if he is in triple A until the all-star game but some how won the balloting (which I no he has no chance to but what if) would he be in the all-star game? I am sure MLB would find a way to keep him out.

Interesting what if Manny still wins an all-star vote. He will be back just before the all-star game. Does he still get to go lol?

BxMetsdude May 7, 2009 at 3:09 pm

I almost voted for Milledge lol, but voted in Murph…..Btw, did the Nats fans continue the whole “Milledge People” thing, or did it die w/ Shea?

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:23 pm

I used to like the ones in philly:

Wolf Pack
Utley’s Uglies
Cole Patrol
Padilla’s Flotillas

Snort-It-Like-Keith May 7, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Or when they had Sal Fassano with that handle bar stach. I think they had the Sals Pals when all the fans would wear staches like him lol.

BxMetsdude May 7, 2009 at 3:37 pm

They had Sal’s Pals too lol.

I remember the upper deck used to sell out from all the Koreans that would show up when Jae Weoung Seo used to pitch. I don’t think they had a collective name, but that “SSSEEEO WEOUNG JAE!” remains in my memory.

fxcarden May 7, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Isn’t this “METS” blog ?.

Why are we talking about Milledge.

Good riddance.

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Milledge is so last year. FMart is the new L-Millz.

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Let’s hope FMart is more than Milledge.

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Why? L-Millz is nasty.

GravediggerHebner May 7, 2009 at 3:50 pm

It’s Janet.

Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty.

jws366 May 7, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Weather.com gives say 70% chance of precipitation for 7pm and then 5% for 8pm. Are they really that accurate?

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Nope. I think it’s all a scam. The weathermen have a network of weathermen just slightly to the southwest of them. If it’s pouring in Philly, it will generally be pouring here withing 2-3 hours. If they are wrong? Big deal! They don’t get paid to be right anyway.

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Best part of this? Came vs. Philly’s minor league team.

AAA: Fernando Martinez, Tim Redding

… … Martinez: 2-4, 2B, 3B, RBI

… … Redding: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:26 pm

I’m all for Redding replacing Perez and then Perez when he gets his head on straight replacing Livan. Ollie could make a decent #5.

Snort-It-Like-Keith May 7, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Livan has pitched very good besides the one start in STL. Why would you replace him? He has low pitch counts which allows him to go deep into games. Pelf has not gotten through 6 innings so far and Maine has not gone more then 6.

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Livan has a 5.53 ERA, and in Livan’s case pitch count doesn’t matter too much. He is known for being able to throw 130+. In 2005, he AVERAGED 114.5 pitches per start. Don’t get me wrong, so far I would rather have Livan than Ollie, but if Ollie can ever pitch like a $5 mil/yr pitcher then he could replace Livan. If you’d rather have Livan than Maine or Pelfrey you haven’t been watching Livan long.

Slim May 7, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Call it what you want, but that trade still angers me. ‘Edge had the swagger an cockiness this team needs. We got a bunch of yes men quick to back down in the face of adversity…

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:25 pm

I think that trade looks better and better everyday.

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Sorry Slim, that trade wasn’t too bad. The only argument you can make is that perhaps Omar could have gotten an arm for Milledge. Milledge + could have become Lidge. Phillies wouldn’t have won the WS, but neither would we.

Sylar May 7, 2009 at 3:30 pm

For the love of god, please tell me this is sarcasm.

Slim May 7, 2009 at 5:56 pm

It’s not. I liked the borderline arrogance he brought. Tired of guys like Church, Wright, an Beltran who are always trying to shine –it when they’re playing terribly. Give me somebody who’s not gonna cry and hide when radio hosts call them out. I’m tired of “yes men” and good guys. Nice guys finish last…

You can bring sabremetrics into it but injuries and finding any excuse not to play the “throw-in” in the deal isn’t helping any arguments. An before anybody brings up Tatis and where would we be without him, how do we know Milledge doesn’t become that righty power bat?

udontmesswiththejohan May 7, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Slim – time to leave town.
Heyyyyyyyyooooooooooooo!

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Time for an afternoon laugh. Scott Hairston is batting 3rd for San Diego today.

sabermetrician May 7, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Time for an afternoon cry. The Padres beat us 2 out of 3 on our home field.

GravediggerHebner May 7, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Laugh if you like, but the dude’s OPS is 1.084

There's Always '10 May 7, 2009 at 4:05 pm

then i think he should find a seat next to manny.

goldglv17 May 7, 2009 at 4:13 pm

I hate Boston fans. I’m sure they would have loved this if the Yanks fans had done it to them when they sucked for about 7 decades to make a mockery of their organization.

Guess the Nats need to start giving their players booby growing pills like the Sox did.

GravediggerHebner May 7, 2009 at 4:21 pm

I lived in Boston from many years before to a few years after their 2004 WS, and it was noteworthy how the outspoken portion of their fandom went from being like Cubs fans to being like Yankee fans almost overnight.

Having met many people there whose parents and/or grandparents feared they’d die before experiencing it though, I can say they’re not all like that.

UnLeashTheReyes May 7, 2009 at 4:59 pm

You guys seem to forget what the mets could have had if they decided to trade Milledge a little bit earlier. Manny Ramirez was an option (along with Dannys Baez who was having a great season at the time). Alfonzo soriano from the Rangers. Was the chruch trade good, yes. But Milledge crushed his value with the short time he spent in the majors. These 5 tool can’t miss players have a habit of turning out pretty bad. This is why i still will say that if the mets can get a pitcher for f-mart, pull the trigger.

4JoeOrsulak May 7, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Yeah. We really should have traded Wright and Reyes for Nomar Garciaparra in 2004
