The Mets’ seven game winning streak came to an end tonight, as they lost to the Braves by the score of 8 to 3 at Citi Field.
For a full recap and boxscore, go to SNY.tv.
The least you should know:
- Johan Santana was great, but not at his best. He hurled 6.1 innings, allowed seven hits, two unearned runs, struck out six and walked one.
- Derek Lowe, you guessed it, stymied the Mets tonight, going just under seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
- In the seventh, Jose Reyes made an extremely costly error which should have been the third out. Instead, the Braves went on to score four unearned runs in the frame.
- Eight of the Braves’ starters got a hit, including Derek Lowe.
- Pedro Feliciano had a poor outing, failing to record an out, while giving up two runs.
Random Thoughts:
- Can’t win ‘em all.
- Omir Santos had two RBI, and continues to impress behind the plate. Jeremy Reed looked pretty good at the plate also, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
- The Braves’s black and white away jerseys are pretty sharp.
- Jeff Francoeur needs to relax. As Keith said, “Give him some milk” to dilute the “Red Bull”.
- Daniel Murphy, your beard is bad luck, and please hit the cut-off man.
- When they lose, even after a seven game win streak, it’s funny how I search for a scapegoat – will it be the Mets’ offense for not scoring runs for Johan again, or their shoddy defense?
- Cowbell Man can’t walk around the stands like he used to due to the setup of Citi Field.
The Game Ball:
- Tonight’s game ball goes to the people who came up with the NY NY Sports Sports commercials for SNY.
Tomorrow, Mike Pelfrey (4-0) tries to right the ship again as he battles against Jair Jurrjens (3-2) at 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field.

NY Sports Space gives his top 8 reasons for having a man-crush on Omir Santos, including:
7) When he was brought up from Triple A, he asked the equipment manager, what the number of the catcher was when the Mets last won the World Series which is Gary Carter, #8. He then chose the #9 jersey. That actually happened.
…supposedly on The Wheelhouse, santos refuted this, who knows…

Johan Santana will take his NL-leading 0.91 ERA to the mound against the Braves tonight.
In three starts against the Braves last season, Santana was 0–2, during which he allowed 28 hits in 21 innings.
Chipper Jones, Matt Diaz and Kelly Johnson are hitting a combined .475 in 40 at bats against Santana.
According to MLB.com, Chipper Jones hyperextended his right elbow yesterday and may not be able to play today.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com, although the Mets reached the postseason only once in the past three seasons, they spent by far the most time in sole possession of first place in their respective division of any team in the majors during that time (367 days).
…umm, where is the pennant for that accomplishment exactly… i’m just curious…

According to MetsBlog reader Andrew, who sent in the following photo, the old home plate from Shea Stadium has been embedded in to the pavement, in the parking lot, on the same plot of land where it rested Sept. 28, 2008.
I’m going out to Citi Field today, and will try to get over in to the parking lot to confirm the location and other details – as I’d like to see if the bases are down around what once was the infield as well.

Casey Kotchman delivered a 2-run single in the top of the 7th inning on Sunday to put Atlanta ahead for good as the Braves held on to defeat the Phillies, 4-2, and take 2 of the 3 games this weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
Kotchman collected 3 hits and 3 RBI on the day, and the Atlanta bullpen tossed 3 nearly perfect innings in the victory. Philadelphia’s Brett Myers pitched well (6 IP, 5 H, 1 R) but did not get a decision.
Chipper Jones hyperextended his right elbow during Sunday’s win and may miss the opening game of Atlanta’s 3 game series against the Mets at Citi Field.
The Phillies have an off day on Monday before they welcome in the Dodgers for 3 games beginning on Tuesday.
After winning the first two games in Colorado behind the bat of Hanley Ramirez (4-for-5 on Friday and 3-for-4 on Saturday), the Marlins couldn’t solve Aaron Cook on Sunday as the Rockies took the series finale, 3-2.
Ramirez did go 2-for-4 in the loss and finished the three-game set 9-for-13 with 5 runs scored, 4 RBIs and 3 steals.
Florida continues its road trip on Tuesday with a stop in Milwaukee for 3 games.
The Washington Nationals looked to sweep the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend, but came up just a bit short on Sunday despite pounding out 8 runs on 13 hits and 5 walks.
The Nationals pitching staff provided no relief for the offense, allowing the Diamondbacks to salvage the series with a 10-8 victory. Adam Dunn did hit 2 more home runs (11) for Washington, and Ryan Zimmerman ran his hitting streak to an impressive 28 games.
The Nationals travel to northern California next to open a 3 game series against the San Francisco Giants.
In player news…Florida starter Anibal Sanchez was placed on the disabled list with a sprained right shoulder and will miss about 2 months.
The Marlins also optioned the struggling CF Cameron Maybin to Class AAA New Orleans after Sunday’s game.
The potential first round pick of the Washington Nationals and first overall pick in the 2009 First Year Player Draft, Stephen Strasburg, threw a no-hitter on Friday against Air Force. Strasburg struck out 17 while walking just 2.
…Obviously by now, there is little doubt the Nationals will select the big righthander next month.

David Wright hit .271 through the team’s first 18 games, during which he had just six RBI.
In his last 12 games, Wright is batting .356 with 12 RBI.
By the way, Wright has a .500 OBP in 16 at bats against left-handed pitchers this season, while batting .438.
Meanwhile, Jose Reyes was 7-for-13 and had at least two hits, a run scored, and one stolen base in each game during the three-game sweep of the Pirates.
Despite batting just .276, Reyes has a .354 OBP, the same number he ended with in 2006 and 2007.
By the way, the Mets, who have a stolen base in each of their last 11 games, lead the National League with 27 steals.
