In case you missed it…
Ramon Castro left Saturday’s game with a tight right quadricep.
Omir Santos was 3 for 5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored on Saturday and Sunday.
According to Newsday, Castro said he
could pinch hit and play an inning or two during yesterday’s game.
Prior to yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel acknowledged Brian Schneider is dealing with a calf injury, though he initially went on the disabled list with back pain.
However, Manuel would not give a specific timetable for Schneider’s return.
In 16 games for the Mets, the 28–year-old Santos is hitting .300 with eight RBI and five extra base hits.
Meanwhile, Castro is hitting .292, and also has five extra base hits with eight RBI in 16 games for the Mets.
…from what i can gather, schneider is at least a week or so away from being able to return, though it will probably be longer… and so, who knows where santos and castro will be at that point… but, it will make for an interesting situation when schneider returns, because, most things being equal, i have to believe the Mets send santos down… unless, of course, they decide to carry three catchers and one less relief pitcher, like they did through much of last season…

Can Santos play any other position, even in an emergency? I don’t think either Schneider or Castro could, but if you’re going to let Sheffield go you’d have to be able to call on Santos to fill in somewhere else sometimes.
Is there anyone who wants Schneider back?
Let’s try not to make snap judgements here….
I’m not ready to say these 40 or so at bats of Santos is what he will be for the whole year. Afterall, every team had a chance to sign this guy numerous times before the Mets picked him up.
I hope he continues what he is doing, but I would rather have other options in case he doesn’t.
Maybe, I forget exactly how much Schneider contributes with his work as a defensive catcher, but.. I’m not exactly pining to his “.143 average” bat back in the lineup.
Schneider’s work as a defensive catcher is VASTLY overrated.
As well as his “calling a good game” look at the past 7 starts from our pitchers.. nuff said
well his .143 was with a bad back apparently. It’s likely he’ll get that average back to his career average, while Sheffield doesn’t look like he’ll top .200. I’d drop Sheff in a heartbeat.
And I think it’s pretty tough to evaluate game calling in a catcher from the outside. so I’ll leave that to the experts.
Back to his career average of .253, with no power? Awesome.
sheff has been having good ABs and walking a lot. AVG is overrated.
Omir is nothing special. Yes he’s off to a good start, but eventually teams will figure him out and he’ll be back to being another lousy nobody.
There’s a reason why he was in the minors for 8 years.
Schneider is nothing special either, and he falls in the “lousy nobody” department as well. Might as well take the right handed hitting catcher who is 27 and has a short stroke.
What happened to whishy1?
Some of us never wanted Schneider here in the first place.. a 5 million dollar waste of space.. and yes.. I’m going there.. jesus flores is tearing it up for the nats… (.311 4 15) with a 382 OBP
Cut Schneider or trade him for a used sweat sock..
Also.. don’t over look the pitching ERAs the past 7 games… everyone was sooo quicj to say Schneider was great with the pitchers, yeah well, look at the starters ERAs and tell me Santos isnt more then capable.
While I’m not a Schneider fan, I think there is a reason why ERA is a pitcher’s stat, not a catcher’s…
Anyone could have been behind plate and the pitchers ERA would have looked good over at least the last 5 games. Could playing in the spacious CitiField with 3 games against the pitiful Pirates lineup have anything to do with it and not how good Omir is calling the game?
Not to mention 1 of the games against the Philthies was with Santana on the mound and he could pitch without a catcher and still have an under 1 era!!!
you send santos down expecting him to be back up when either schneider or castro go on the DL. neither has been able to avoid injuries very well. in the end, the Mets will need 3 catchers.
carrying 3 catchers doesn’t make much sense. how can you get all 3 ABs?
Sheffiled hasn’t turned it on yet and I don’t know if he will. he sure seems to hit the ball hard a lot. It is always right at someone though. the Mets ahve turned it around lately. we don’t know what goes on in the clubhouse. maybe sheffield is contributing behind closed doors.
either way, sheffield needs to contribute more but I wouldn’t pick now as the time to dump him, especially as a way to keep santos on the roster.
Yeah, I think keeping 3 catchers on the roster is pointless. Best option is to keep Sch in rehab as long as possible then option Santos (he does have options right?). You need depth and he will be back at some point.
Unfortunately, Ollie pitches best with Schneider behind the plate and not so well with others. That’s been a trend since last year. It’s because Ollie is high maintenance and needs constant micro-managing. And I guess Schneider is more inclined to do that than others.
So, like it or not, it’s in the Mets best interests to keep Schneider and get him back to where he can play — at least as long as they have Ollie. They need to find a way to get Ollie back to being productive or else they should try to trade him. Maybe Dave Duncan in St. Louis can fix him.
Gee, I wonder which solution’s gonna win. Could it possibly be the only one that doesn’t actually solve the dilemma, but simply delays the decision?
Why isn’t the option of Keeping Santos & Castro and trading or releasing Schneider on here? I think Schneider does nothing to help this team! Get rid of him and keep the other two.
It’s a money issue. Schneider makes much more than the other two. The Wilpons won’t want to simply release him and throw the money away.
Trade Castro to the Yankees for a prospect. The Yanks need a catcher with Posada and Molina on the DL and with their age, there’s not telling how long they’ll be out. The Mets have been trying to shop Castro all winter long, the yanks are desperate for a catcher with some experience.
The problem with trading Schnieder and keeping Omir and Ramon is that Castro is likely to go on the DL on any given day. So, you need the back up.
Schneider? Who knows if he will stay on the field once he comes back, but he is lousy at this pint, so not hard to replace with the Cancels of the world. Or there is usually a molina or two available, right?
And basing what you do with the C position on Ollie’s head is a not starter.
Why so much hate on Sheffield. He is exactly what the team needs. Did anyone see how Murphy asked for his advise on hitting in Sunday’s game? Even the experienced hitters prefer a peer to someone who has never really broken through even with experience (church).
His average is only low because of the late start in April and not having enough bats to lift it since.
I know who MLB pitchers are scared of between Church and Sheffield when they come to bat! Look at the no. of walks Gary has.
What’s he good for. Rubbing cream opn people and teaching them to say I didn’t know what it was?
um, what?
Did he rub some cream on you Rodney?
On your perpetually smiling face?
:-)
Should be a starter over Church. At least Sheff doesn’t swing at crap.
Sheff is too old to play the field everyday…
the leading answer is nonsensical, you can’t keep someone on the DL after they’ve returned from the DL.
Why isn’t there an option in that poll that would include keeping Santos and Castro and getting rid of Schneider?
In the context of this Mets team, Schneider is useless. His defense is VERY overrated and his bat is horrendous. He’s an automatic out at the plate. Let’s face it…he’s someone who on any other team would be a backup in his own right and I never understood why his signing was such a big deal at all.
So I would vote for trading Schneider for whatever we can get.
i would put schneider on waivers. if someone wants him they can have him and his contract.
Schneider wants you put on waivers.
hi brian, i didn’t know you were a fan of hot rod! get well soon. or not! : )
Mets are in a good position overall with the team.
Invest in youth. Keep Santos.
Trade high. Castro can go.
I think the Mets did not need Sheffield, but now that he is here, getting rid of him so soon would look even worse. If this were a computer simulation, I would drop Sheffield, but still shop Castro.
Def should send Schneider to Yanks, they can pay him and he can start for now and back up Posada when he returns, Yanks failure to address their C depth has been an issue for years, if Omar could even get anything else in return it would be a steal….and later on their is no excuse not to add salary for another arm or bat
Wouldnt even wanna send castro to Yanks, w/ that launching pad, his power, posada’s health, i could see castro going to Yanks getting 400 ABs and hitting 22 HRs….ugh that would be awful……worst (best) Schneider will do is hit .260
After going to Boston and needing a DH I think releasing Sheffield becomes a reasonable option.
He isn’t hitting much, and Manuel has sat Church into a slump because Sheff needs to get AB’s for some reason.
Church went into slump because he isn’t as good as expected and is suspect physically because of concussions.
I don’t think you go into slumps from being protected against certain types of pitching that you have never been successful against in your career.
The lack of playing on a consistent basis is what did it. And Manuel has been resting Church against rightys and then sending him up to PH against leftys lately.
I’m not sure how that is protecting Church.
um, why isn’t there a trade schnieder option?
Because its not your board and this guy has a thing going fro Schneider.
I vote for none of the above, get rid of Schneider
The option not posted is to trade Schneider which is what I would do. Package him at the trade deadline. He is dead wood.
Yes Santos does not have a great rack record but he seems to click with this team. Plus we’ve already seen him throw out a few runners in key spots. I’ll take my chances with him and Shrek.
Schneider to the Yankees is a good idea but who do you get back for him?
Medical tape?
The Yankees have recently DFA some pitchers to get them off of their 40 man roster to make room for needed extra catchers and relievers.
You take one of them off their hands and offer to pay the shipping on Schnieder…
The team ERA when Schneider catches is a robust 5.67.
Castro’s is 4.15 and Santos is 4.88
With the exception of Hernandez and Perez all the pitchers post a lower ERA with Santos catching and the team is 6-4 when he starts. They are 7-7 when Castro starts. Team is better without Schneider right now.
Added some of Castro’s numbers to Schneider’s. Schneider’s ERA is 3.81, Castro’s is 4.76 and Santos is 4.82. However with the exception od Perez and Hernandez every other pitcher has a lower ERA with Santos (Santana 0.00, Pelfrey 4.09, Maine 1.50). Trade Castro, let Santos catch those three while Schneider catches Perez (1.50 ERA) and Hernandez (2.90ERA). That will them some fresh cathers at the end of the season. That being said I could probbaly catch for Santana and he’d have a ERA under 3.00.
I really don’t see what Schneider brings to the table to warrant any type of job in this team.
He was heralded as a great game caller but there hasn’t been any appreciable difference, over the past year, in how well the pitchers have done with him vs. Castro or now Santos.
Hi bat is weak and he really doesn’t have any sort of arm throwing runners out on steal attempts. His being a lefty with the bat also makes him more of a misfitin this lineup,
I don’t see the logic in changing the Castro/Santos platoon just to give a job back to a light lefty hitting catcher who is not outstanding in any way.
trade schnied to yankees
