Note: If Delgado is DL’d, Who is Promoted

by Matthew Cerrone on May 14th, 2009 at 8:49 am

In the Daily News, Adam Rubin believes Mike Lamb or Ramon Martinez are most likely to be promoted from Triple-A Buffalo if the Mets put Carlos Delgado on the disabled list.

Earlier in the week, Jerry Manuel said the team will evaluate Delgado again when they get to San Francisco today, and will determine on Friday if he needs to be put on the disabled list.

According to Rubin, though Lamb is hitting just .122, “Observers say he’s hitting the ball hard.”

Meanwhile, Brian Moritz from the Press & Sun Bulletin writes, “B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras said he got a call from the Mets 20-25 minutes before yesterday’s game, telling him not to start Michael Antonini but to instead have him throw on the side.”

Moritz concluded, “Nothing’s definite yet, but that suggests that Antonini may be on the move sometime soon.”

this doesn’t mean he is being promoted to the Mets, though i suppose he could be… it could also mean he is going to be traded, or sent to a different level, who knows… if i recall, Jerry Manuel said he was impressed with antonini this spring, along with Jonthan Malo and Dillon Gee, and i have heard Omar Minaya mention antonini as well, when speaking about noteworthy prospects

Antonini, 23, is 4–1 with a 4.88 ERA in six starts for the Double-A Binghamton Mets, while striking out 26 batters and walking 13 in 31 innings.

Meanwhile, the 33–year-old Lamb has a .182 OBP and five doubles with just one strike out in 14 games in Triple-A.

Martinez, who played in five games at second base last season for the Mets, is hitting .300 with one extra base hit in six games.

Martinez has played every position but center field, pitcher and catcher during his 11–year career, while Lamb has played mostly first and third.

Note: Reyes not playing Smart

by Matthew Cerrone on May 14th, 2009 at 8:32 am

Yesterday, in the seventh inning, with one out, and a tie score, Jose Reyes tried to advance to third base from second on a ball hit in the hole towards SS Yunel Escobar, who fired the ball to third, where Reyes did not slide and was tagged out.

he probably would have been out even if he did slide, but why is he running at all, given that, again, like the night before, the play is in front of him… i usually don’t mind aggressive mistakes, but in this case he was stationary and watched the play the entire way…

Later, Reyes led off the 12th inning by hitting a ball deep to left field, again with the game tied, but instead of running hard out of the batter’s box he admired the fly ball for a bit, then, when the ball fell, he hustled to stop at second.

…again, he may have been gunned down if he tried for a triple, even if he ran hard the entire time… i have no problem with him holding up at second… in this case, it’s probably the wise move… but, why not run hard the entire way… i mean, what if Garret Anderson bobbles the ball, etc… i know it’s a long game, 12th inning, they’re tired from playing the night before, and so on, but he’s 25 years old… run hard, jose

Following the game, Reyes told reporters, “It’s bad baserunning.”

He gave the same excuse to reporters the previous night, when asked why he tried to leg out a triple while representing the tying run late in the game, only to be ‘thrown out by a mile’ at third.

it’s such a tough spot… i do not want the team to throttle reyes back, they need him to play free and easy… yet, he can’t be reckless…

…in the end, he just needs to play smarter, and i don’t know if there is anything the coaching staff can to do force that…
