The Mets lost to the Giants tonight, 2-0, in San Francisco. The team fell to 21-16 on the season with the loss.
For a full recap and boxscore, go here.
The least you should know:
- Mike Pelfrey allowed two runs on six hits over six innings, but balked three times in the game and was removed for a pinch-hitter after throwing 78 pitches.
- The Mets had the bases loaded with no outs in the second and with one out in the eighth, but failed to score both times.
- Matt Cain walked five Mets –- including walking the bases loaded in the second –- but allowed only three hits over six scoreless innings.
- Alex Cora left the game with a thumb injury in the third. He was replaced at shortstop by Fernando Tatis.
Random Thoughts:
- Steve Phillips makes my head hurt.
- With the bases loaded, one out and lefty Jeremy Affeldt pitching in the eighth, Jerry Manuel pinch-hit Angel Pagan for Daniel Murphy. Pagan grounded into a double play.
- Carlos Beltran doubled and walked in the game and continues to get on base nearly half the times he comes to the plate.
- Ken Takahashi and Sean Green threw scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, respectively, and both looked good.
The Game Ball:
- Goes to Beltran, not really because of anything he did during the game, but just because he really didn’t deserve the tongue-lashing he got on national television tonight. Did nobody check his stats before deeming him unclutch?

Pinch hitting for Murphy(career .375 average vs lefties) for Pagan(career .225 average vs lefties) is some of the dumbest mangaing i have ever seen.
That was the most unprofessional sportscast I’ve ever watched. From the commentary to the camera work, just the absolute worst.
I wish the Mets could decline to be shown on that POS channel.
Pelf on post game:
‘Thinking too much about trying to pick guys off and just having a brain ‘ips’ on concentrating on what I was doing’.
Said, ‘I just wasn’t comfortable. It’s hard to explain. Said he had it a couple of times last year against FL and in college. It’s like I’m fighting myself.
Guess I just like making a fool of myself on national TV.’……
Oh, and couldn’t agree more Ted on the game ball.
i’d say Bochy pitching a lefty against our 3-4-5 was a worse decision, it just somehow worked out for them
Agreed with BOTH posters before me.
A) The Pagan for Murphy move was one of the dumbest managerial moves I’ve ever seen. There is no excuse for it and Jerry Manuel should be ripped for that one. LET MURPHY FRIGGING PLAY! And bring back Bobby V because I’ve about had it with Manuel and these types of moves.
B) Worst sportscast I’ve ever watched. And it could have been Reds vs Pirates. I don’t care. That ESPN crew is absolutely horrible. They babble on and on about un-game related things, for innings at a time – show no enthusiasm towards big plays and big hits, all the while Steve Phillips soapbox to rip the Mets at every given opportunity. ESPN needs to replace this crew…there have to be better replacements out there. Complete joke of a broadcast.
Someone should write a letter to ESPN.
BTW, boo on Omar for bringing Delgado back. Yet another year where an aging veterans contract sits there rotting while we have to scrounge with AAA players.
And yes, I was always against bringing him back. We were playing with house money there.
You guys are funny.
And Ted, lets be a little objective,
while I’m not great fan of “Little Stevie”
he seemed to make alot more sense
than when Miller&Morgan are alone.
Omar, like our other Omar—-
You’re Lost!
Thought Jerry was making a bonehead move as soon as I saw pagan coming up. Not even using hindsight! Forget the L/R nonsense, Murphy is a better hitter than Angel regardless of who is pitching.
Jerrry needs to stop overmanaging sometimes and let the guys play.
Funny, of late I’ve respected a lot of JMAN’s moves, but substituting Pagan (!!!) for Murphy…WTF JMAN???
As only the eloquent Parcells can put it, “Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!
And don’t tell me Murph’s been in a slump; we all know that.
Mets just totally beat themselves tonight, and Pelf was on but kept looking like some spooked freak out there. Ay-yay-yay!
Steve Phillips is an asswipe for his commentary. Morgan knows the game, but the combination of those three is just so bozoish!
Sucks when I don’t get Gary, Keith, and Ron.
Yeah, it’s hard to take four in a row as the visiting team, but, but…
woulda been beautiful.
Jerry is obviously alot easier on the ears
than Willie was BUT he’s no better Mgr..
And THAT ain’t sayin’much.
Is ESPN holding Pelfrey’s Teddy Bear hostage ?…the last time he started for the mets and Espn was covering the gm, Pelfrey tumbled to the ground and we lost that game too.
More like a Voo Doo doll.
I’m lost b/c I was right about letting Delgado go? Twelve million dollars wasted. Add him to El Duque, Castillo, Alou, Pedro, Wagner, et al and you’ve got a lot of wasted money. The payroll is bloated b.c. of this.
For all that Delgado did for one half a season, he was missing for a year and a half prior, he is old, he stinks defensively, and to add to it all he was hurt and they knew it!
Would have been nice to win, but oh well. I’ll take 3 out of 4 in a 4 game series every time.
Fun factoid of night; as a transplant Mets fan I met Razor Shines daughter tonight at a bar watching the game.
Didn’t really get hitting for Murphy there. Bringing in Pagan in that spot when he’s had one AB all season was a bad move. Let Murphy hit there. The whole ‘righty/lefty’ thing is way too overanalyzed and overrated.
If Reyes and/or Cora can’t go tomorrow, who plays short? Tatis again?
You could tell Steve Phillips was lucky Joe Morgan is a nice easy going guy because if he was a hothead he would have ripped Phillips a new one. That was some of the most ridiculous blabber I’ve ever heard coming from that hack of a former GM. Anyone shocked he’s never gotten another job? Beltran should go if they collapse? Yeah because as we’ve seen great center fielders who hit in the clutch, win gold gloves like him are a dime a dozen. It just never ended, he just kept going on an on. I wanted to reach threw my tv and strangle the tool
LOL at the pelfrey comments, i love the dude but he did look incredibly frightened the entire time during the inning where he made the second ballk that wasn’t really a balk but whatever he just looked awful
and yes i agree Pagan for Murphy stupid stupid stupid
I hope he learned his lesson
anybody else think they should send pagan back down, i am already sick of him
You obviously have no understanding of
exactly what Delgados done in total.
Since he arrived here.
So I won’t waste my time.
And agree on the Beltran stuff, un freaking believable, what is that guys problem, he’s probably just jealous and bitter i’d say
Any baseball fan who relies on Joe Morgan or Jon Miller for educated baseball analysis is as bad as them. Who ever doesn’t know Beltran is one of the hottest, if not the hottest hitter in the gaem, has been under a rock.
Thats not exactly what he said couz.
Sorry, fongulalou but that’s exactly what he said about Carlos. And he kept saying it.
How could you miss it?
Steve Phillips:
“I’m a complete moron and love to hear myself talk.”
Morgan/Miller:
“No arguement here.”
Very good point by Mike on Mike’d Up. If Reyes is expected to play tomorrow….why couldn’t he pinch hit in the 8th?
Sounds like the Mets are again covering up on how serious the injury is.
Also…he is reeming Manuel for that move. Jerry is going to have a lot of questions to answer.
Looks like Steve Philips gets his information from Mike Francesca only and bases his facts from there LoL
what exactly did he do for us fongulalou? how many W.S. have we been to with him as our leader? He was HORRENDOUS for 3x as long as he was hot last year.
Im thankful we had him, but after the 2nd collapse, and a chance to free up 12 million dollars, you let the guy walk and get younger and hungrier.
Then add to that the fact that they KNEW he had a hip problem and it’s inexcusable.
If Manual wasn’t going to go with Murphf in that at bat, the only reason I can think of for pinch hitting with Pagan instead of Jose or even Castro was, he had to put Pagan in anyway in left if Murph was coming out. And if they just tied the game, he didn’t want to deplete his bench.
I hate that logic b/c you actually have to tie the game to worry about the bench in extra innings.
But just a thought….
Steve phillips is an asshole. he always rips the mets every chance he gets and are you kiddin me saying they should get rid of beltran? and also rippin on d-wright. he is a bum and pissed that the mets got rid of him as GM, get over it.
One thing i did hear in baseball tonight yesterday…. Rumor has it that the diamondbacks are planning to get brandon webb healthy and trade him becasue they wont be able to hold him there for the long haul. anyone else think the mets should get rid of f-mart and niese for webb? i deffinitely do.
imagine. Santana, Webb, Pelfrey, Maine, Perez when he gets his shizz toghether.
Manuel you can tell was nervous answering that question. Check out his facial expressions. He had no excuse. He basically said Pagan was swinging the bat better…yet he’s been on the team for 5 minutes.
He messed up (again) and knows it. Clock is ticking. Get Bobby Valentine back here already. i can’t stand these even keel managers.
prick steve phillips is…what an a$$hole…i can not stand when the mets are on espn..just because i know its coming..so having to listen to phillips for 3 hours…its worse than listening to mike francessa…can you imagine if those two were ever in a booth to call a mets game?…oh god
Murphy has been ice cold. 1 for 17.
I would have let him hit, but it wasn’t that big a deal. Murph is down to .271. Pagan has a lot more speed to avoid a double play. Granted he still hit into a DP, but that’s not where the game was lost.
It was lost when Cain was walking the ballpark early in the game and they didn’t score.
Back off Delgado!!!
He has already won a number of games for the mets this year.
He has given us more value than Pedro ever did (and this is not intended to be a bash on Pedro).
Its unfortunate that Delgado got hurt.
and yes…pinch hitting pagan for murphy..did he not remember murphy getting a pinch hit base hit the other night?…TERRIBLE move…so far the worst move this year…
I think its been said already that Reyes has some tendonitis i guess they figured if he’s out just leave him out let him get the final day of rest, i hope he’s out there tomorrow and yes manual made an idiotic move
i also really really doubt that they will ever bring Bobby V back as much as people may want him. I don’t think Jerry is going anywhere.
Mike F. (on Mike’d Up) is too gassed up about the Mets tonight. Of course he loves to bash the Mets as we know his allegiances.
I actually thought, as I saw Murphy in the on-deck circle, that this would be a good spot for Pagan as a fresh bat. I agree with Manuel– Murphy has had some rough at bats recently- and Pagan also has more speed. In retrospect (and hindsight is 20-20), maybe you go with Murphy who can work the at bats and has proven able to get a sac fly. Even so, this game was lost in the 2nd (and Reed really smacked that ball.)
Anyway, the Dodgers are hot, so let’s hope we don’t go into an offensive shell now.
they had bases loaded again..whats the difference between bases loaded none out and bases loaded one out?…nothing…gotta get runs in…however…we went 3-1 in san fran…should have won tonight..but there will be games like this..lets go into la and take 2 of 3..same with boston..we will be alright
by the way…even though pagan DID kill us with th double play…sheffield hurt us just as much striking out…that really killed us..i could have told you that they were going to walk wright….so…oh well..lets go beat some dodger ass
And the whole Beltran discussion on the telecast made me sick. Morgan is an idiot (He must think we are dumb as fans that we expect the “8 HRs in 12 playoff games” all the time…) And Phillips just does not add anything.
I have grown to really appreciate what Beltran brings, and I think he has become much more aggressive, and I like it. I would not trade him– you just don’t replace a guy like that. What may happen is we use this Delgad o injury to intall Murphy at first, and decide if we want to make a run at Holliday or someone like that, maybe using FMart as bait? Or decide that Fmart is the future…
its time we make a trade sooner than later because jeremy reed is a late inning defensive player not a starter , tatis can be counted on but no as a starter the whole season i pefer him play on and off spelling church , we need a 1st baseman as soon as possible and whats with manuel not sticking with a same lineup i understand there was a righty pitching today but i would of pefered tatis at 1st than reed starting.
Why ya watchin Mike’d Up there are better things to watch than that asshole
i feel like manuel needs to finally set a lineup he is going to use day in day out regardless if its a lefty or righty
Once again it’s not about rewarded what a player DID for you, but what he has the likelihood of doing in the future.
And now Delgado is going to be out for a long long time, and as a result we have career backups playing every day.
We were playing with house money with Delgado and Omar didnt recognize this.
Like every week ESPN was fair. The Mets will collapse as they have in 2007-2008 because there is no club leadership. Name me two team players and I will give it to you. Everyone on that team is me me me, and no one has stepped up to take any responsibility.
And I notice without Reyes in the lineup they win (except for tonight). Perhaps he is the poison.
Perhaps you are a douchebag
I agree, nym2009. I hate this crap where the lineup is juggled every game. Especially with Delgado out, pick the best 8 and play them every day except when giving someone a day off.
Perhaps you are if you think the amazins have a chance
I guess i am then
I am not saying they WON’T or CANNOT do it, I am saying they need a mindset change.
LOL Aaron if you are a Philly fan just say so. Why bother making a profile here when your team is the champs? Is that city so pathetic with losing that you still feel no one respects you. Then again, no one does respect that joke of a franchise.
somewhere Johan is laughing at Pelfreys run support.
omarsantis,
Why does everyone who dissents a Philies fan? Are you all that senstive to them? Besides, the Phillies are a lot older and have a lot more tradition. Besides, reading the Mets fans blogs are amusing.
To your first point that ESPN is fair you are clearly wrong, they mentioned several times that the mets “haven’t been playing good baseball and that they have been taking advantage of mistakes then like five minutes later the giants take advantage of the balk or whatever and they are like good teams take advantage of mistakes
Look at most of the mets wins. Reyes cannot make clear baserunning decisions, you all walk people… First place is only good if you can keep it.
I take back what i said before, you definitely are a douchebag
So are you a Braves fan? Yanks? Why pretend?
It does not matter who I am a fan of, I just find it funny how hateful many of the posts on here are then you all criticize others when they knock the Mets. I read on here no less than 10 times how certain people wished swine flu and aids on others. Kind of ironic
Can we please all ban WFAN? Carton, Beningo and Mike F. are the Hannity and Rush of sports. They have absolutely no knowledge of the game. Case in point….all three were arguing one day that Reyes is too aggressive on the base paths and the next day they call him lazy. Enough is enough with them. They are all low-life loud mouth who happen to have access to a microphone.
Just man up and admit what kind of fan you are at least it will help us understand better your clear disdain for the mets
on top of that if you are a fan of another team you really should be on their blog
Uh, Aaron, where were you the last 3 games the Mets won? Typical Philly fan…
omarsantos: you just beat me to the punch. Knew this was a troll. Their MO stands out a mile coming down the road.
Yup, Phillies have that tradition of the most loses for any franchise – ever.
And if you were oh -so – proud of that ‘tradition’, you would admit that’s your team.
As I said, typical Philly fan. None of you who come trolling on here are ever any different.
No I think it does so I can guide you to the site of YOUR TEAM.
This is a site for Mets fans, not jealous fans of teams who can’t handle seeing us win for whatever reason.
Bunch of liberal Mets fans at that. Nothing wring with Rush and Hannity. Why show now anyway? I will be back in September I am sure. Good night and Sweet Dreams!
Phillies DO have over 10,000 losss it is what happens when you are around for 127 years…
Liberal Met fans? HAHAHAHA !!
That’s the best you’ve got?
Yes, please leave and come back in September.
i also dont know where aaron gets the whole swine flue thing…i didnt read anyone say that…unless i missed it..but like…we cant complain about taking 3 of 4…we can complain HOW they lost and the dumb moves and the hits we couldnt get but…aaron..why come on here and bash us?…the whole “first place is only good when the season is over” line is already old..we get it…we collapsed the past couple of years…not telling us anything new..lol…its almost comical that even though that was bad…i mean 3 years from now are people still going to be saying “ohhhh yeah well a few years back you guys collapsed…lol…let it go!!
See ya in September,
Best i got, did not come here to be hateful; just curious. OH and go Nats!
Or Cubs
Aaron, do you read the blogs for the Phillies and other teams, fans are fiercely defensive when their team gets bashed, they root with their heart and they overreact sometimes. You telling me the Phillies fans are level-headed and logical? So what’s your point exactly? You created an account on here to say Mets fans don’t like it when others bash their team and that most of the Mets wins are flukes because they walk guys and Reyes makes baserunning mistakes.
Yup, 21 wins all by luck. You got a real think tank going on their at your house huh?
Thanks for the amazing insight, do you have anything else to say Mr. Wizard?
Hah Bravos fan. It’s pretty sick how someone spends time creating an account for a Mets blog, and then PRETENDS to be a Mets fan, in some twisted effort to try to convince Mets fans their team is worse than the Braves.
It’s actually sociopathic in a way.
And if you are a Braves fan, it’s the Phils who won the W.S., and the division. Shouldn’t you be jealous of them? Or is the idea that your team will never be atop this division again for a long time too much to handle?
They talked FOREVER about this leadership crap, as if ANY OF THAT MATTERS. It’s just as nebulous as that “edge” and “heart” crap. This team HAS a leader and his name is Jerry Manuel.
ESPN looked bad
Jerry said in the game that Delgado was the leader and any one who watches the Mets should know this…he goes to the mound as often as the catcher does. I also noticed that they couldn’t tell that it was Murphy in left, not Sheff, and they seemed to forget how good Beltran and Delgado were 06.
I was so pissed about pinch hitting Pagan. How do you let a guy make his season-debut in a spot like that? I knew what was going to happen as soon as I saw him loosening up in the on deck circle.
i literally want to fight joe morgan…not only did we have to sit there and listen to asinine comment after asinine comment, he talked about carlos beltran not being a good player…instead of adding the “expertise” of steve phillips, they should have just taken jon “i look like big bird in this yellow shirt and tie and cant say ANYONES name correctly” miller and let morgan bash the mets by himself all year
the part i loved the best – which was when i lost it and HAD to mute the tv for the rest of the game was when he said, after saying that the mets have not been playing well at all, and that they won 11 of 13 games because other teams “were making mistakes” and basically saying they won because they got lucky, he responded to a phillips comment about the giants only have a lead because of the balks by saying something like “well yeah but the good teams take advantage of other teams mistakes”
im telling you guys, after watching that punk matt cain pull an ollie perez and not get punished for it, i absolutely lost my mind
lets spit on this loss and get back at it again tomorrow night
Wow, I’m kinda glad I didn’t have a chance to watch this game. Two great scoring chances with the bases loaded and we completely waste them! Sounds like the game should have been a laugher.
Would someone that did watch the game inform me if the three (?!?) balks were all really balks or were they lousy ump calls?
Miller and Morgan are idiots and Steve Phillips is a douche of the highest caliber. I feel bad for anyone that sat through their nonsense for the whole game.
Jerry, STOP OVERMANAGING.
While we’re all piling on….heres some more.
Hey Jerry Manuel: I don’t need to see Jeremey Reed starting anymore. The experiment is over. He’s a BENCH PLAYER!
Dear OmarSantis,
Since you are a super genius and would have walked on the “house money” that Delgado was, please explain where for $12M you would have dug up 35 HR and 115 RBI?
Don’t get into some long winded varying diatribe, just tell us how you would have replaced what Delgado brings offensively.
Patrick – it doesn’t matter what he said, predicted, etc. and then what really happened. We all knew Delgado was a risk…just like Ollie was. Turns out…neither worked out.
No point crying about it now. The Mets lost their cleanup hitter for a long time, and its a gigantic hole. Sheffield is not the every day answer. The Mets and Omar MUST go out and make a trade and make one soon for a bonified power hitting every day player. Get it done, or else this team is sunk.
This group isn’t getting to October with the patch jobs and platoons every day. Your all kidding yourselves if you think they are.
I just wanted to say I completely agree with the observation that Steve Phillips makes my head hurt. I mean, the Mets essentially lead the Majors in EVERYTHING for the month of May. They’re 12-4, and you would have thought the Mets were in last after listening to that crap. Can you imagine if they were 11-5? I like the games when they’re on SNY much better.
A few thoughts. As far as leadership of th e team, I think it is SANTANA. He commands the field and is a presence when he on the mound, other than him I would say Wright. Last night was a lost game from the start. When we had a guy on third with one out an DID NOT score and then had the bases loaded with NO OUTS and did NOT score, it was GAME OVER. They just did not have it last night. They could not take advantage of the walks and they played flat, it happens. MOVE ON. We won 3 of 4 games. BALK YOU! What was the deal with all the balk’s? No Reyes or Delgado, if Delgado is out we will need to get another player to play first.
First of all, Steve Phillips is unemployed (for all intents and purposes). There is a reason, he never got a new gig as a GM and I think he showed the country why that is. That piece on Beltran was a disgrace.
But, we understand Stevie. We know that Jimmy Rollins has proven to be a clutch player over his career and an excellent player at that, simply because he had one excellent year. One word for Steve Phillips….BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
@ patrick (#80),
Completely agree with you. We wouldn’t have found that for $12MM. Matter of fact, the buyout was $4MM, so we technically would have had to find it with $8MM.
Jerry completely over manages. And what happened to his Spring Training declaration that Dan Murphy can hit lefties (and better than Ryan Church)? Pagan is not a good right handed hitter.
And why does Omir Santos, with an OBP under .300 continue to bat 7th? L/R crap? Another example of Jerry over managing the L/R crap.
That said, I’ll take 3 out of 4 on the road any time.
I cannot stand ESPN announcers… they tore apart Beltran, Wright, and Reyes for about an hour last night. I kept turning it off and was watching the game on ESPN listening to Howie Rose on WFAN
On the balks – I didn’t see the 3rd balk
the first one was pelfrey made a movement toward home plate but lost his footing and stumbled a little bit and then held onto the ball, a balk was called
The second one really shouldn’t have been a balk – pelfrey was clearly uncomfortable, he kept looking around, rubbing his cleats around the rubber, he looked pretty spooked, he called santos out at one point and what i got from it was, santos called time and pelfrey made some sort of motion that they called a balk, it clearly wasn’t wright was over talking to pelfrey and some of the guys of the giants bullpen came out to start throwing, jerry came out and argued for a big but whatever, pelfrey looked upset 2 and as i said i didn’t see the third one but pelf was pretty uncomfortable out there so i wouldn’t be surprised if he did it again
The balks aren’t a big deal. If you team scores 0 runs, you’re not going to win the game anyway. :p
it’s like “day-ja-view” all over again
Jerry = Willie
are we keeping Murphy on our team for his glove?
I think not
these guys win 3 outta 4 and leave me angry
what the heck!
That job on Beltran really was low. The most ridiculous part of the whole thing was the suggestion that the Mets need a “complete player” and that Beltran is not that. Are you serious? Give me one player in all of baseball that personifies the term “complete player” to a greater extent than Carlos Beltran! You can’t! He may have his shortcomings; he has blown some pretty huge AB’s, and apparently that one missed cut-off last week on a run that was going to score anyways was unforgivable, but come on…
The only explantation for that is that of the 3 closest to “the core”, Beltran’s the one Phillips didn’t draft or acquire. Good for you, a***ole. Joe Morgan actually cut him off on Beltran and suggested he was way off…JOE MORGAN! AND HE WAS RIGHT! This is like having T.O call Eagles games.
Murphy= 5/14 v. LHP.
3 out of 4 is nice BUT
The mets should take 3 out of 4 from this Giant team. The Mets made the Giants lineup look like the 27 Yankee lineup throughout this series.
Mets should have swept. Manuel completely botched this game.
First of all- as much of a supporter of Sheffield I am, he should have been given the day off last night. You cant play a 40 year old every single day. Now I guess he might not play tonight??? But I think they are facing a lefty so I dont know how that will play out.
Second- we had an infielder playing left field and an outfielder playing 1b. Stupid any way you cut it.
Third- PH for Murphy there might be the dumbest move Manuel has made all season, and thats saying something. How do you pinch hit for Murphy, who has done BETTER against lefties for Pagan whois a career .225 hitter against lefties and is much better against righties? Makes absolutely no sense at all. Not even a little bit.
AND, where is Jose Reyes? Ramon Castro? Jerrys over managing is getting really old, really quick.
I think some of you may be slightly too critical of Jerry’s game management. I may do a lot of things differently, but I don’t think his management generally costs the Mets games.
Prismo-
There have been about 4 or 5 times in this short season that Jerry has made completely un explainable moves like this one. The last one was leaving Feliciano in to face Matt Diaz. I have always given Jerry the benefit of the doubt but its just becoming too much. You cant make these glaring mistakes on a consistent basis. There is absolutely ZERO good reason to pinch hit Pagan there. It was a completely horrible move. Why is Murphy on the team if you would rather have Angal Pagan in a big spot? Horrible.
I think the Feliciano crap was MUCH worse than pinch hitting for Murphy.
I would have less of a problem if Jerry said “I had a hunch.” But he doesnt….he says things like “We felt better about having a righty up there.”
Well, Jerry, when that righty hits 100 points worse against lefties than the lefty you are pinch hitting for, that makes no sense.
We got “Ollie’d” last night. This must be how it feels to be the opposing team when facing good-decent ollie, a bunch of walks that dont get capitalized on.
I agree with pinch hitting for Murphy, but I would have used Castro, and then leave him in the game, putting the pitcher in Santo’s spot.
The Mets need to have a sit down meeting with MLB and ESPN regarding their broadcasters, and in particular Phillips. It’s one thing to make negative comments about a team you don’t like, but it’s another to let it carry on and on for several innings. I mean, jeez……this guys even had a montage for Beltran…..gimme a break.
Pelfrey needs to see a hypnotist. That was just stupid. I wouldn’t mind if he gave up 1 solor HRs and we lost that way, but to lose on walks and balks is just ……. argh.
That was a horrible telecast last night, as most everyone else has stated. We are truly lucky for having Gary, Keith, and Ron. Manuel has certain players in a doghouse, and for whatever reason, Murphy is one of them. Just let the kid play and work through his problems. Angel Pagan is a better solution?
All three of those guys in the booth make my head hurt. I kept looking for the SNY guys, The only time all year I hear Beltran pronounced that way.
I did not watch a lot of the telecast, but Phillips is an embarrassment. I’m telling ya, this is just crazy. You have Beltran hitting .370 in the midst of a career year, and they show 3 bad plays he made try to make a case for him being un-clutch. Then, they show a close-up of Reyes and start tipping on this guy.
This team is in first, right?
ESPN as a whole has become unwatchable…between that and all the Favre hype, it’s just crazy. Thank God for MLB Network!
@ The Game Changer, I have heard it all before what teams are and are note going anywhere and why, and it is not irrelevant what a fan would do if they are going to bellyache and Monday morning quarterback endlessly.
Every contract is a risk and Delgado is/was no more risky that anyone else on the Market. If the assumption was that the Mets should have gone after Texiera (which I assume he would say) the better answer still would have been picking up Delgado’s easy affordable option vs. signing a guy to an 8 year deal.
The Mets in a pinch during the season still know they have about $20M in payroll to play with going into 2010 minimum. The front office can absorb a contract with that in mind.
If the Mets players continue to buy into Manuel’s philosophy of single them to death and be aggressive on the bases, I am not concerned with the offense, bigger concern is that Pelfrey is still really a number 3 or 4 same with Maine, and Livan Hernandez and Tim Redding are in the rotation.
I’d like to see the Mets be very aggressive in early June for a starting pitcher.
I cursed at the tv several times as Joe Morgan ripped into him followed by Steve “Mo” Phillips crushing him as well. Steve – you are unemployed by MLB. Nice goatee you lowlife.
My favorite was when they showed Beltran’s years with the Mets, and highlighted his one off year (2005), while completely ignoring the huge numbers he’s put up over the last three!
Beltran’s numbers with runners in scoring position: 5 2B, 2 HR, 21RBI, .395 BA, .527 OBP, .651 SLG
Beltran’s numbers with two outs and runners in scoring position: 2 2B, 7 RBI, .375 BA .524 OBP, .500 SLG
I believe that’s known as…”CLUTCH.”
yea steve phillips is a moron…i was in shock when he was talking about trading beltran because hes not clutch…i was like u do realize he might be the best player in the league right now….not to mention hes by far the best CFer in the game…he clearly has something against the mets still…he went out of his way for 2 straight innings to bash beltran
no need to fret my fellow Met friends…
i think owners throughout baseball know that Steve Phillips is an absolute moron…
after the mo vaughn/alomar/burnitz fiasco..
after he tried trading away wright for jose cruz
after he tried trading reyes for alomar..
after trading away a.j. burnett for al leiter
after hearing about sexual harrasment allegations…
after having the highest payroll in baseball ( even higher than the Yankees )
and coming in last place..
we all can conclude that Steve Phillips was the Mets version of Isiah Thomas?
“My favorite was when they showed Beltran’s years with the Mets, and highlighted his one off year (2005), while completely ignoring the huge numbers he’s put up over the last three!”
- then they dont mention the fact that Beltran missed almost 50 games that year…had leg problems early in the year and cracked his skull against Cameron’s head in August…
then they never mention that he came back from that injury to lead the team into the chase for the final wild card spot that year..
it seemed like in the beginning, Joe Morgan was praising Beltran but after Steve started getting on Beltran, Morgan followed suit…
I actually met Joe Morgan before and have spoken baseball with him…trust me when I tell u he is a Beltran fan…
