News: Delgado To Have Surgery
By Mike Nichols - May 18, 2009 6:07 pm

The Mets have announced Carlos Delgado will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur and repair a torn labrum in his hip tomorrow in New York.

…from what i can gather, delgado will likely be out until the all-star break…

  1. enterkrod says:

lets go get someone…we need a big bat

  2. zen says:

It’s supposdly arthroscopic so it’s more like 6+ weeks than lost for the season.

  3. patrick says:

lets take a deep breath and ask can Beltran and Wright deliver above threshold this year, and get Reyes back in the lineup, I would still hold out on adding offense and prefer a real 2 to Johan’s ace.

  4. ohmurph.com says:

well have him nice and rested for the latter part of the season

  5. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

please not nick johnson, the guy is a very soft hitter and is injury prone (freak injuries or not). Aubrey Huff is the man for the job.

  6. MetsFan4Decades says:

No surprise. Probably the better decision rather than trying to see if today is the day he can play through pain.

Here’s hoping he’s back strong for the second half.

  7. fxcarden says:

This is the right move. We’ll have Carlos for the stretch run.

  8. ASod1975 says:

As I stated in a previous post, if they make a move, it’s got to be for an outfield/1B type. I mentioned Garrett Atkins as another possibility. He’s having a rough year with the Rockies, but they’ve got plenty of outfielders, and Ian Stewart could take over for them at third if they moved Atkins. Other options could be Aubrey Huff or Mark DeRosa. Nick Johnson doesn’t make much sense since he’s pretty much a first baseman exclusively….

  9. enterkrod says:

i dont want to see nick johnson though..anyone but him…i like the tohught of victor martinez at first base but..hey i can always dream

  10. oleosmirf says:

no need to panic its only for 2 months.

remember Delgado stunk until the all-star break last season.

  11. ravi3 says:

I think this is what we all assumed would happen. Thanks to the Nats defense for this, because it is their terrible play which ledto Delgado getting the triple on which he hurt himself.

My concern is that he will lose his timing, which took forever for him to get back last time around..

  12. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

if they legitimately think delgado can be back for the stretch run then we will need someone who can play more than 1st base, so NO NICK JOHNSON!

  13. Dirtysanchez says:

lol…no miami taxi driver needed lol..

  14. gipper913PDX says:

Hmmm…I still think we are etter off waiting an holding our chips for a number 2 behind Johan – so we’re not stuck with Livan at 4 and Redding/Niese/Gee/??? at 5 all year. But, man, that bat will be missed – and I NEVER trust the Mets when they say he’ll be back after the ASB!

  15. BOSSofNY says:

lets go get a nice left fielder

  16. gipper913PDX says:

    *”better off”

    *..”and holding our…”

  17. MetsFan4Decades says:

oleosmirf: well that’s a very good point.
It’ll be just like last year – lol.

  18. bigcliff says:

maybe oli can re-invent himself into a rik ankiel and play 1b

  19. KL15 says:

    MetsFan4Decades

I told you it wasn’t as serious. I really think he could come back before the asb, but if it were me I would keep him out as well.

  20. zen says:

I’d rather use Tatis/Murphy @1B and Sheff and Church in the OF.

If a trade happens, I’d go after a #1 or #2 starter. If not, keep the propects. You’re not getting a good bat at this point. That’s why it was foolish not to add an extra bat in the off-season.

  21. ridiculous-

why didnt this get done over the summer.
or why didnt we get rid of that way too passive/ talk with everyone at first base/ he only hits .265 waste when we had the chance.

we dont need to replace him

  22. oleosmirf says:

leave Reed and Tatis at 1B and Murphy, Church, Sheff in the OF.

maybe a guy like Aurelia or some other bench player can get brought in at minimal cost but thats about it

  23. I want Aubrey so we can Huff and Puff the competition away! :D (bad joke?)

  24. MetsFan4Decades says:

KL15: Kevin B. just said probably 6 weeks, maybe 8. So 8 weeks is late July. Hopefully that’s the worst case scenario.
And whoever previously expressed concerned about timing when he comes back: I don’t think that’s as big a concern as it was when he broke his wrist….

  25. BOSSofNY says:

does anyone know if reyes is playin today?

  26. 69orBust says:

I think they can hold on until he gets back. If they trade for a big bat what will they do when Carlos comes back? And do we want to trade top prospects for a two-month replacement?

  27. ohmurph.com says:

    How about Mo Vaughn?

  28. ASod1975 says:

    69orBust,
If they did swing a deal (especially with prospects involved) it would have to be for an OF/1B type. The only thing I worry about with Carlos is his age. I would guess closer to eight weeks than six.

  29. marathonmet says:

The point is the mets have options.
If a good deal comes up, they take it.
If not, they wait it out with tatis/reed/murphy.
either way we’re going to win

  30. KL15 says:

Hey how about this, move Murphy to first for some games. After all if this is the future, then lets see what he’s got. Continue the platoon at first and left. If Delgado can come back strong, leave Murphy in left to start games and late in games move him to first and move Sheffield, Tatis, etc to left. Let Delgado get some rest after coming back and get Murphy more time at first if again this is where we are going.

  31. ASod1975 says:

The nice thing about the timing of this surgery is Delgado is due back in July sometime. If he has a setback of some kind, they can still swing a deal at the deadline. I think they can make do with what they have, but if they can get an OF/1B on the cheap, they’d have to explore that as well….

  32. KL15 says:

    MetsFan4Decades

The fact this can me done with a scope is MAJOR cause for optimism. I’m not a doctor but I’ve had my knee scoped and my abs when I tore those. When you don’t have all that scar tissue from a huge incision, the recovery time shortens greatly. As for Delgado himself, I really believe he’ll have a situation something like he didn’t realize how much he hurt untill he didn’t anymore.

  33. dmbrian27 says:

Here is the issue with everyone’s theory about having him back for the stretch run after the ASB. What if he comes back and cannot perform at the same level? What if the surgery does not do what it is supposed to do? He is not exactly young (in baseball years) and his recovery is not guaranteed.

If he does not come back to where he was and it is after the ASB they are really stuck because that is way too close to the trade deadline. Every team will hold all of the bargaining power knowing the Mets will need help.

I don’t think they should make a knee jerk reaction but they should be seriously looking at their options to getting a stable power hitting lefty in that line-up as soon as possible.

  34. weneedhelpnow says:

anyone here anything about a roster move for tonights game to get redding in???

  35. VelvetFoot says:

Sounds maybe less severe than ARod, but I guess you never know what you see when you look inside. ARod went to that guy in Vail, right? Hospital for Special Surgery is top notch though I bet.

  36. Dirtysanchez says:

    @ weneedhelpnow

    figgy went down

  37. KL15 says:

    ASod1975

I get what you are saying, but why swing a deal? Why not Wiliy Mo Pena? I was of the belief that was the reason why they brought him in and put him in Buffalo.

  38. Dirtysanchez says:

    @ KL15

they could have just brought in pena for buffalo….they are doing pretty bad. Not all moves are for the ML level.

  39. Willy Mo Pena? wow i forgot about him. we should try him first

  40. Dirtysanchez says:

rickey weeks out for the season!!

  41. Brewgs4661 says:

The Mets need to wait and see how Delgado’s recovery is looking before making any big moves. They should wait 3-4 weeks and see how they are at that point. If they are still contending hold out for Delgado’ return and go out and get a No. 2 before the trade deadline. If Delgado is going to be out for more than 6 weeks they need to get another player. One guy I would love for them to get would be Victor Martinez from Cleveland whose wheels are about to fall off. Just by adding him to the lineup Mets they would become as dangerous as the Phillies if not more, and still have a better rotation to solidify the division. Imagine this lineup: 1. Reyes 2. Castillo/Cora 3. Beltran 4. V. Martinez 5. Wright 6. Sheffield 7. Tatis 8. Church/Murphy…what are your thoughts? Also, if they decide to holdout, what pitcher would fit in the rotation the best?

  42. ASod1975 says:

Plus, Pena isn’t yet hitting all that much even at the Triple-A level. They’d be better off with Tatis/Murphy/Reed than Pena in my opinion.

  43. UpstateDave says:

Honestly, I’m somewhat relieved by this news. I was expecting him to be gone for the rest of the year. I think we can manage until the all-star break without him (get Murphy playing every day at 1st, or in a platoon w/ Tatis), and if it turns out he’s not ready to come back at that point (very possible, as the 6-week estimate seems best-case), it still gives us time to trade for a power bat for the 2nd half.

  44. KL15 says:

    ASod1975

Oh I agree that the platoon is a better idea than Pena. I’m just throwing ideas. I hope the Mets CLOSELY monitor Dlegado’s progress before they make a knee jerk reaction and give up the farm.

  45. D in Ben Lomond says:

Why isn’t Church being talked about for 1st? Wasn’t that a selling point on bringing him here?

On second thought, Church’s arm is too good to be wasted at first.

  46. Dirtysanchez says:

    @ upstatedave
he could be gone for the year..late 30’s with that type of surgery….he may not ever be the same…

  47. KL15 says:

    D in Ben Lomond

I’ve asked the same question about Church a few times. Especially because he’s left handed.

  48. KL15 says:

    Dirtysanchez

I understand you’re concern and you should always prepare for the worst. But I don’t think this is as big of a deal as you may think. I may be wrong, but the fact this can be done with a scope gives me some hope.

  49. Dirtysanchez says:

    @ KL15

i hope your right..im just guessing here but this isnt like wrist surgery or something..its his hip. I mean i know chase and arod had similar or the same surgery but i just dont know if gado can come back to being gado you know…they have to make preparations that he will not be back this year..in reality he may be on/off the DL all year….

  50. TKFJ says:

Reyes out again…JC what is wrong with this team, and the management. If he can’t go DL him, Omar is the dumbest fu.ck GM in the league.

  51. jpres says:

TRADE FOR GARRETT ATKINS…CHEAP AND FITS RIGHT IN AT 1B AND THE 4 SPOT.

  52. BOSSofNY says:

what reyes out again this is getting stupid now

  53. Ceetar says:

It’s okay, Tatis is a career 2/25 against Wolf.

  54. TKFJ says:

Yeah, tell me about it. Rub some dirt on it, you latin pansy.

  55. BOSSofNY says:

if reyes isnt playing is cora going to play

  56. Dirtysanchez says:

why is reyes being out stupid…maybe he is just injured?? Since when is being injured stupid?

  57. MetsFan4Decades says:

No, Cora is not available either. Tatis is playing SS.
We’re down one guy right now.
This is 5 days now with Jose. Need to DL him and get another player up here if he’s not going to start tomorrow.

  58. WhataPutz says:

Something smells fishy with this Reyes thing. Idk what it is, but the guy just doesn’t look like he’s hurt. You see him in the dugout and he’s walking fine. So either there is something going on, or Jerry is just babying him, but we cannot continue to win without Delgado and Reyes, especially now with Cora shelved. If Reyes cannot play when he is needed, after already missing 4 games, clearly he need to be examined.

  59. jlad51 says:

What about Magglio Ordonez? There are reports that Tigers might release him…

  60. BOSSofNY says:

its stupid because its 5 days of him just sitting on the bench, if hes hurt u DL him not just sit on the bench. an now we have a week defense lineup today against a good team

  61. Dirtysanchez says:

    @ jlad51
    what report?

  62. ASod1975 says:

Ramon Martinez again out of Buffalo’s lineup tonight. I sense he’s on standby for Reyes/Cora…..

  63. WhataPutz says:

If they release him, then by all means sign him, but is another unstable outfielder what this team needs right now? Eventually we’ve got to quiet the circus.

  64. Dirtysanchez says:

If he is ok by tomorrow…you lose out on him for 10-15 days…keep in mind here bro..its the mets and mets doctors…he will be day to day for as loong as possible..

  65. ASod1975 says:

If Reyes is almost ready to play, I would just DL Cora and bring up Martinez. You can’t keep playing two guys down….

  66. BBmetsfreak36 says:

If we are un-aware the of complete status of Cora and Reyes, I think we need to bring up an infeilder from AAA, b/c if they are out for a signifagant amount of days Tatis isn’t a SS. Rather than have Pagan who I like alot, but believe we dont need, call up an infeilder b/c an emergancy outfeilder off the bench is much easier to find than an emergancy infeilder like Tatis at short.

  67. Dirtysanchez says:

    lol…the great ramon martinez…

  68. WhataPutz says:

This is not good. I mean if Reyes isn’t hurt that badly, this speaks wonders about the kind of guy he is. And if he is hurt, then we are in trouble. Idk how long they can fend off the defending champs without their lead-off and clean-up hitters.

  69. ASod1975 says:

    Dirty,
I know Ramon Martinez isn’t great, but you need to get someone up here who can handle the position. I just get mad that the Mets always seem to wait around much longer than other teams when guys are hurt. It’s like, let’s just play with a 22 or 23 man roster for awhile and see what happens….

    The Magglio Ordonez Situation
By Tim Dierkes [May 13, 2009 at 11:30am CST]
Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press has a new column about the Magglio Ordonez situation. It’s bad enough that the 35 year-old right fielder is off to a .241/.331/.304 start in 127 plate appearances. The other issue is that his 2010 option for $18MM vests if Ordonez reaches 457 total plate appearances this year. He’s got just 330 to go, with a current pace of 4.2 per game.

It’d take serious manipulation by Jim Leyland to prevent Ordonez from getting those 330 additional plate appearances. Rosenberg figures that’d result in a grievance by the players union and Scott Boras. Ordonez also has a $15MM vesting option for 2011 based on playing time in 2009 and/or 2010.

How about releasing him? Ignoring deferred money, Ordonez is guaranteed another $14.5MM this year plus a $3MM buyout for 2010. Eating $17.5MM now beats paying Ordonez the remaining $14.5MM for this year and the $18MM for ‘10. Would that result in a grievance, or are the Tigers free to release him and only be on the hook for this year plus the 2010 buyout?

  71. Dirtysanchez says:

I know asod…and i totally agree..roster management is not their strong suit.

  72. Dirtysanchez says:

    @ jlad51
lol so we can pull another shef ;p thanks detroit ;p

  73. shudderWINGS says:

Well, I’m glad they waited a week to finally do what we thought all along.

Maybe they should have just brought him to LA and made him sit in the dugout for kicks.

We’ll see you in August, Carlos.

  74. VelvetFoot says:

Hey, Reyes wants to play but he can’t and/or the docs won’t let him. Better to be cautious for the long run.

  75. ASod1975 says:

    shudderwings,
The Mets and their “handling” of injuries is an absolute joke. Did they really think sitting him out a few days was going to magically heal his injury, one that has apparently been with him for awhile (reaggrevated in the Nats game). It’s frustrating and I’m sure tough on the manager when they make you play a couple guys down when it could be avoided….

  76. WhataPutz says:

I’m not liking how this team seems to approach games. They seem to approach everything on a broad scale, forgetting they were 1 win away the last two seasons from playoff contention. you cannot forfeit games to give “extra” rest.

  77. MetsFan4Decades says:

Reyes said he’s fine batting but the problem is running.
And they obviously don’t want to take a chance on putting him out there half assed and have something more serious happen b/c it’s not healed yet.
We can live w/o Jose for another 10 days on the DL. We certainly don’t want to lose him for 2 months, especially with no Delgado.

Give him the time he needs to heal.

  78. Backstop says:

Every needs to calm down here about Reyes. Like someone earlier said, if you DL him now and he’s ready to go tomorrow, you’ve lost him for 10 healthy games. That really would be horrible roster management.

Especially with Delgado out until the ASB, a healthy Reyes is much more important than Reyes in the line-up tonight.

  79. Wanny2 says:

So Nichols is a gatherer too?

  80. mouserdz says:

Time to revamp the medical staff

  81. vic79 says:

Honestly if its only till the All Star Break I would live with giving Sheffield more time in the OF and letting Murphy and Tatis platoon 1B

Reed can play here and their too
