Health: Jose Reyes’s Leg

By Matthew Cerrone on May 19, 2009, 12:36 pm

Jose Reyes missed his fifth straight start last night.

Prior to the game, though he has swelling in both the right knee and calf, he told reporters he will not go on the disabled list.

Reyes will test himself on field before today’s game, and, according to Jerry Manuel, ‘He should be ready to go from here on out.’

…whatever… when he’s in the lineup, i’ll believe he’s ready…

…until then, i will continue to expect the worst

What? So this whole Reyes isn’t playing thing isn’t a benching for his poor base running? Hmm I wonder when all the conspiracy theorists will come out and aknowledge they were wrong?

    udon’t:

I was one and I guess I was wrong. It seemed to me that first game was a benching as an error.

But I guess it is clear now that Jerry only benches Ryan Church for hitting too much (though now he has earned one) and Ramon Castro fro getting two hits off of Josh Johnson.

Mrose, I checked out the scout.com page the other day on the Mets. Not bad. Articles written by the old Metsonline.com guy. That was the Mets blog before there was Metsblog. The comment section there is great. Maybe some of us should start drifting and Matt would get the picture.

Tips on running a successful blog per the modern day Pied Piper Twitter site some seem so fond of….

Blogging Traps You Need To Avoid

    - Neglecting the Comments Section
The opportunity to interact with your readers is one of the most important things which makes blogging special in the first place. Never make the mistake of neglecting the community you can build around your blog through the comments section, or you will definitely end up regretting your attitude down the road.

    - Answer to comments
When you started blogging I am pretty sure that you got excited with the first few comments that arrived. You would even take the time to answer to each of them individually. That approach helps to create loyal readers and to build a community around them. Even if your blog is much more popular now, do not neglect the comments. At the very minimum you want to answer the people that post direct questions to you.

    Wait a second…

Why bring him back already? Take it slow! Remember what happened with Church? Why the rush? I’d rather he sit out 2 weeks than to risk a worse injury. Gosh!

Who is working for this team?

Also, according to Mets.com, not the most brightest.

First, I would just like to point out that this team may have played like garbage last night, but they are still within reach of first place. They have won the majority of their games over the past couple of weeks and have won games that they would have lost last year much like they did last night. So, let’s all breathe and wait for all of the dust to settle. Those Phillies fans can celebrate an injury here and a misplayed ball there, but in the end (and I think most of us feel this way), this team is certainly different than the ones we saw the past two years. Now let’s just hope there’s enough difference to help them wear some shiney new rings in the end. Or I think all of us might launch an assault on Citifield. Just kidding?

The effect being what? No matter what change is made to something like comments, a half dozen or more or going to hate it.

Lots of this has to with porting of servers, getting data to lineup properly, and keep in mind this is all free, you pay for nothing.

Scout.com makes you pay, go for it.

Oleo, I think he has tried at times. Church should have been a good role player. Krod and Putz for sure compliment our core. Maine does as well. It’s the hole in LF for the last 3 years that bothers me. The one that we have been trying to keep warm for a teenager instead of gettting a true LF.

If Reyes really does have swelling in his jnee and calf still, I would feel a whole lot more comfortable if he went on the DL and let it heal fully, instead of rushing back and making it worse.

Part of ( a big part) the problem is having these guys in limbo, so they never make a viable move to replace them. Hence, you get this throwing guys at a position to fil lin.

They need to figure out the starting line up, and use it, and Omar needs to make roster changes to put an appropriate team together (25 guys even!).

And right now, that means if Reyes has to DL, call up a real SS. ANd get a freaking 1B that actually knows how to field the position!

And if they decide (proactively) that they will go with a learn on the job 1B, annoint him and play him every day. Instead of trying a new guy out every game.

but Church was never really an everyday player in Washington. He had 530 AB in 07 and his next highest was 359 AB in 2008.

He’s fine for RF and batting 7th but then what about LF??

Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado. they do their job very well for the most part. Its the other 4 starters that drag us down…its been that way since 06

im sick and tired of these makeshift lineups, maybe our players will start to hit consistently if our lineup IS consistent. Once reyes gets back this should be our lineup:

    1 Reyes SS
    2 Church RF
    3. Beltran CF
    4. Sheffield LF
    5. Wright 3B

TRS, at least Tracy can play the position. But man, he stinks with the bat, and I don’t know if they can afford a total black hole offensively, even if he fields like the 2nd coming of Mex.

Rauch also seems to be pretty well shot.

Honestly, other than giving us a more stable glove at 1B, it seems to be a downgrade on both parts, and will be expensive (eating into the money available for other moves).

Ramon Martinez and Pagan were there for like a week so I dont count them.

the only guys hitting well are F. Martinez and Jesus Feliciano. The 3rd best hitter is Argenis Reyes…enough said…

Dirty, completely agree. Tatis, Sheff and Church should be starting every day right now. When Sheff falls apart then you can bring Muprhy back up.

I would ask “What do you guys think the biggest mistake Omar ever made was?”

But I’m more interested in discussing Lacrosse. How do they get the nets to be so strong? I admire.

Oleo, good point on Awful Reyes. But how much can you judge by those stats? Elmer Fud has an ERA below 1.00.

i got to admit that i am usually a very optimistic met fan…and i still believe in the this team…but last night really hurt….someone needs to get in these players faces and let them have it and i mean all of them…not one guy out there is exempt from this….plus infield and out field practice everyday…even if it is just simulated….let bust out the flashcards to test them on the plane/buses in between games and series!!!! they need to be treated as though they are good athletes who dont know the rules to the game that they play…oh and fines….large ones when you dont run out a ball…..garbage is the only word for them today!!! JUST PLAIN GARBARGE!!!!!!

DND, where have you been man? Fmart IS Omar’s legacy. If he fails then that’s lights out for Omar. There have been so many players not signed and so many players not traded for all because of Fmart.

    May 19, 2009, 1:31 pm at 1:31 pm #

Last season Evans and Murphy were called up essentially from AA (Murphy got one game in AAA, I think) where Thole, Duda (1B) and Shawn Bowman are all hitting respectably (though Duda with no pop and Bowman with little OBP).

Yes… Yes… that is off topic! The Rangers…

    Let’s go further…

I do wonder what the Texas Rangers will do in the offseason…. Hmm…. Trade Hamilton for young pitching?

  101. therealsince86
    May 19, 2009, 1:33 pm at 1:33 pm #

DND, it’s 100 percent unlikely he gets traded unless he flops once called up. He would have already been traded if he was going to be.

    May 19, 2009, 1:33 pm at 1:33 pm #

Francesa is going nuts about the Mets… gotta love it.

Murphy has played 200 at 3rd base and 13 times at 1st base….. in the minors…

but forget that, what you guys have for breakfast? (see post 47 all you newcomers)

  103. stickguy
    May 19, 2009, 1:35 pm at 1:35 pm #

    TRS, you certainly like Tracy!

anyway, his numbers a demotion level horrible this year, were dismal last year (think way worse than Schnieder level), but were OK in 2007. Not a good trend ther…

and based on ABs, it looks like he might be a platoon guy (making the numbers even worse), unless he has spent time in AAA or on the DL.

Who knows, maybe he really is a talent that just needs some regular PT to bust out, but at this piont, I think an established hitter like Huff is a better way to go (depending on cost).

  104. oleosmirf
    May 19, 2009, 1:36 pm at 1:36 pm #

well Murphy’s stone hands are exactly what we need at 1B.

why dont we move him to SS while we’re at it. I bet he tries super hard to learn the position…

  105. Scarlett
    May 19, 2009, 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm #

I don’t know if this is crazy or not, but if Jose were to be out for an extended period of time (or not), how would it be to have Wright play SS? I believe he grew up playing that position, although it’s obviously been a while. Then Murphy could play 3B…

  106. The Stache
    May 19, 2009, 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm #

Again, and Hit the Weights Zeile can probably attest to this as he was my other big supporter, why the hell didn’t we sign Dunn again? Placekeepers for a warm teenage body instead of a legitimate LF. LF on this team outside of Floyd and Gilkey for one season have been a complete and utter disgrace for the past 10 years. There is no excuse for that given the Mets funds.

    No Excuse.

  107. Wanny2
    May 19, 2009, 1:39 pm at 1:39 pm #

Other than Murphy’s slip and fllas earlier in the season, can anyone really point to any defensive miscues on his part in LF (other than the obvious drop, which Church and Sheffield are also both guity of).

  108. Wanny2
    May 19, 2009, 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #

If youj don’t like the defense you’re getting in LF now, you wouldn’t like what you were getting from Dunn either.

    for 101
Lifelong Met fan,but been in Dallas for 20+ yrs. The Rangers are actually FUN to watch. A lot of young talent that play the game the right way, unlike an unnamed club from the NL.
Anyway, they have an abundance of young sluggers that play 1B in addition to Hank Blalock who’s rotting at DH. Justin Smoke, last years #1 supposed to be better than Chris Davis not to mention Salty. Also have 3 ML- ready catchers under 25.

  110. The Stache
    May 19, 2009, 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #

Do you honestly think Wright’s arm is going to improve throwing from the hole? But hey even if it does, lets move our franchise player GG(warranted or not) 3b to SS for a temporary absence for a player an abysmal minor league fielding percentage let alone UZR.

  111. The Stache
    May 19, 2009, 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #

    Wanny

#1 Murphy doesn’t hit for enough power to be considered a good LF for a good baseball team that had the chance to sign dunn or abreu for $6-12M

#2 I don’t think Murphy is terrible in the OF. Dunn is slow in LF but we have Beltran in CF. Dunn never gets to that ball last night, with Beltran catching it with ease. I know bad example, but without checking the stats I bet Dunn’s bat is worth more wins than his defense costs in wins. I could definitely be wrong, but unfortunately I am not the greatest with the whole sabermetrics thing.

  112. The Stache
    May 19, 2009, 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm #

And I was much more intersted in Dunn as a long term 1b option, who could have slotted in right now just fine. I preferred Dunn to Delgado before the option was renewed. 40 bombs 100 R 100 RBI .380+ OBP. Oh right he’s slow, defensively challenged and strikes out alot. At least he can hit, more than I can say for the current Mets LF and RF.

    May 19, 2009, 1:52 pm at 1:52 pm #

Stache – the silver lining to those strike outs is less hits into double plays too.

I was advocating Dunn all offseason as well.

    coulda, woulda, shoulda!

I disagree. Fernando would be traded in the right deal. He would certainly be traded in a deal for holliday or some other top player. Which is the right approach.

Please let me know a trade that was not done because they insisted Fernando was in the deal (a deal that was worth it).

  115. methead
    May 19, 2009, 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm #

Muprhy can be a very good role player for this team. I don’t think he is an answer long term. If he can net you a good player in return right now, you have to trade him.

  116. amazinmets5
    May 19, 2009, 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #

the stache- wait so just because murphy doesnt hit for power as much as other guys, that means he’s not good enough as a LF for the mets? FALSE STATEMENT…how can you even say that…many great outfielders dont hit for power…that isnt everything..and i think its funny that u mention abreu because his power numbers have severely diminished over the past few years so you are contradicting himself…and adam dunn is 10 times worse defensively than murphy and also strikes out a billion times
