Health: The Mets are dropping like Flies

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

The good news is Francisco Rodriguez jogged out to the bullpen today and warmed up, hours after collapsing from back spasms that sent him the hospital.

That said, following today’s game, Jose Reyes told reporters that his leg is still not feeling good, and said there is ‘no chance’ he will start tomorrow.

What’s more, Ramon Martinez was removed from today’s game in the eighth inning with back pain, Jerry Manuel explained.

According to Manuel, he considered starting Fernando Tatis at shortstop today, suggesting he could turn to Tatis tomorrow in place of Martinez and Reyes.

Meanwhile, prior to the game, Manuel said it is possible Ryan Church could be put on the disabled list, as he will have his sore right hamstring examined tomorrow.

Church also said he is experiencing pain his right hip.

…seriously, at what point does Omar Minaya step in and help manuel out, who is playing so short-handed right now, it would not shock me to get a call that i’m on deck to hit… i mean, omar, give the guy the tools he needs…

…from what i can gather, the Mets are reluctant to promote a player like Ruben Tejada or Jonathan Malo, because they are not on the 40–man roster… that said, manuel basically has two guys available on his bench at this point, and one is his back-up catcher… unreal…

By the way, Nationals 1B Nick Johnson was a late scratch today due to ‘stomach discomfort,’ according to the Steve Yanda of the Washington Post, who writes:

When you first heard that Johnson had been scratched from the starting lineup at the last minute, how many of you figured he had been traded… That was the consensus up in the press box. Turns out, Johnson is still a member of the Nationals… Manny Acta said Johnson should be ready to play tomorrow at New York.”

honestly, at this point, if the Mets make a sudden trade, i bet it’s for an all-purpose infield type, like a Mark DeRosa, before it’s a one-position solution… or, minaya should trade for Ben Casey

PostGame: Red Sox 12, Mets 5

by Ted Berg on May 24th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

The Mets lost to the Red Sox today, 12-5, at Fenway Park. The team fell to 23-20 on the season with the loss.

For a full recap and boxscore, go here.

The least you should know:

  • Tim Redding did not pitch well, allowing eight hits, four walks and six runs in 4 2/3 innings. He took the loss in the game.
  • The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Ramon Castro homer, but lost it in the bottom of the inning to a Mike Lowell three-run blast.
  • The Mets rallied for three in the third and held the lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Redding got two outs before the Sox started hitting him hard.
  • Sean Green replaced Redding with two on and two out in the fifth. On his first pitch, Green allowed a single to Nick Green that scored both runs and gave Boston the lead. Nick Green was thrown out trying to take second base on the play.

Other observations:

  • A win would’ve been great, especially since the Mets had the lead in this one, but taking two out of three from the Sox at Fenway with half the team hurt is a net positive.
  • The Sox blew the game open off Brian Stokes in the seventh. It was by far Stokes’ worst outing of the season, and his ERA climbed to 2.89.
  • This game featured many prominent goatees and, thanks to David Ortiz and Ramon Castro, two perfectly manicured chin-strap beards.
  • I imagine Jerry Manuel’s going to get ripped on talk radio for going to Green with two on and the Mets clinging to a 5-4 lead, and he probably should. Why go to the guy with the highest ERA in such a tight spot? Of course, Stokes had the lowest ERA on the team coming into the game, and he got lit up, too.
  • David Wright made an outstanding diving catch on a Nick Green bunt in the bottom of the fourth. Look out for it in highlight montages everywhere.

The Game Ball:

  • Goes to Castro, who fired another salvo in the battle for backup-catcher supremacy, hitting a home run and a double in the game. He now has a .002 advantage over Extra-Base Omir Santos in OPS.

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Rodriguez missed yesterday’s game with back spasms, and then went to the hospital following the game.

Meanwhile, according to the Daily News, “Ryan Church will be examined by team doctors in New York on Monday, and hopes to get a definitive idea of what’s ailing him and whether he will need to go to the disabled list.”

Lastly, Jose Reyes will again miss today’s game with tendinitis in his right leg, with Ramon Martinez starting at shortstop.

Note: Great Day in NY Baseball

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 10:03 am

Yesterday was an amazing day in New York baseball.

Mets and Yankees fans were each treated to a dramatic, come-from-behind win, while sharing the same rooting interest: to see one another win, which is something that never happens, as the Yankees defeated the Phillies, and the Mets defeated the Red Sox.

The best part, my wife, in her Yankees hat, and I, in my Mets shirt, high-fived at the end of the day, saying, ‘Nice work.’

Monday, we will return to ignoring one another’s baseball goals, and in some cases rooting against eachother, but for today, it’s nice to be in the same corner.

Note: All in All, a Decent Road Trip

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 9:57 am

Think about it, last night’s win means the Mets will at least finish 5–5 on this rollercoaster, 10–game, West-to-East Coast road trip, despite losing Carlos Delgado and Alex Cora, injuries to Jose Reyes, Ryan Church and J.J. Putz, a runner missing third base, countless errors, three balks, and playing two teams with the best home records in baseball, including the Dodgers, who have the best overall record in the entire league.

Note: Defense and Power

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 9:43 am

In the ninth inning last night, and the Mets up one run, with a runner on first, David Wright layed out full extension to his right to stop a hot ground ball from Jason Bay, then quickly threw to second base for the force out, where Luis Castillo did an equally outstanding job reaching wide for the throw, and extending out like a first baseman, falling to the ground, but keeping his foot on the bag just long enough for the out.

Later, Ramon Martinez, who made two errors the night before, dived to his left to grab a ground ball from Mike Lowell, then threw a one-hopper to Daniel Murphy, who smoothly picked it up on a bounce.

…the best part, lowell slammed his helmet with two hands and yelled in frustration… excellent

“He played great defense today,” Jose Reyes said of Martinez, according to the Daily News.  “He’s a very good defensive shortstop. Mistakes, that’s going to come. I feel better when we see him play that way today.”

i think what was so great, is that the two things that seemingly left this team over the last week, power and defense, returned to win the game in the span of 15 minutes, including a hand-full of sparkling defensive plays plus omir’s home run…

News: Omir Santos is Good, Schneider is on his Way

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am

Last night, down one run, with two outs, 28–year-old Omir Santos hit a two-run home run over the Green Monster in Fenway Park, paving the way for a Mets win.

“This was a huge win for us,” Jerry Manuel said after the game.

Santos is hitting .270 with six extra base hits and 15 RBI during 24 games for the Mets this season.

To hear Santos speaking with reporters following last night’s win, check out Bart Hubbuch’s blog for the New York Post.

In the Daily News, Adam Rubin writes, “Brian Schneider could return to the Mets from the DL within a week.”

… a few weeks ago, the talk was that santos would get sent down when schneider returns… now, i see no way the Mets can let this happen… castro has to go, unless the Mets again plan to carry three catchers… however, given all the injuries, and playing short handed, how is that justified… sorry, ramon

Castro, who played just 52 games each of the last two seasons, is batting .239 with a .316 OBP in 24 games this season.
