Note: Defense and Power

by Matthew Cerrone on May 24th, 2009 at 9:43 am

In the ninth inning last night, and the Mets up one run, with a runner on first, David Wright layed out full extension to his right to stop a hot ground ball from Jason Bay, then quickly threw to second base for the force out, where Luis Castillo did an equally outstanding job reaching wide for the throw, and extending out like a first baseman, falling to the ground, but keeping his foot on the bag just long enough for the out.

Later, Ramon Martinez, who made two errors the night before, dived to his left to grab a ground ball from Mike Lowell, then threw a one-hopper to Daniel Murphy, who smoothly picked it up on a bounce.

…the best part, lowell slammed his helmet with two hands and yelled in frustration… excellent

“He played great defense today,” Jose Reyes said of Martinez, according to the Daily News.  “He’s a very good defensive shortstop. Mistakes, that’s going to come. I feel better when we see him play that way today.”

i think what was so great, is that the two things that seemingly left this team over the last week, power and defense, returned to win the game in the span of 15 minutes, including a hand-full of sparkling defensive plays plus omir’s home run…
