The Least You Should Know:
- Omir Santos cemented his spot on the 25-man roster tonight, going 2-for-5 with a homerun and two RBI. Santos hit the walk-off single with one out in 11th inning after MetsBlog’s Mr. May, Gary Sheffield stole second and advanced to third base after Marlins catcher Ronnie Paulino’s throw went in to center field.
- Mike Pelfrey was tremendous tonight allowing just one run over 7.2 IP. He also struck out a season-high six batters and has now done so in consecutive starts. Pelfrey was mixing in more of breaking pitches and throwing them for strikes, which left the Marlins off balance all evening.
- Bobby Parnell, Francisco Rodriguez, J.J. Putz and Pedro Feliciano combined to pitch 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Other Moments And Observations:
- Sheffield continues to be impressive on a nightly basis. Even when he isn’t driving in runs, he does something in every game that helps the Mets win. He also became the first hitter to hit a ball off of the Acela Club, unfortunately it was just a loud strike.
- David Wright struck out with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning. He has now struck out 11 times in his last 25 at-bats.
The Game Ball:
- Tonight’s Game Ball goes to Omir Santos, who accounted for the entire Mets run production tonight.
The Mets continue their weekend series against the Marlins tomorrow with Tim Redding facing Josh Johnson, starting at 1:10 pm EDT.
Update, 9:30 pm:
In a post to Twitter, SI.com’s Jon Heyman writes, “White Sox talking to Mets about catching, most likely Ramon Castro.”
Heyman adds, “That sound you hear is Jerry Manuel cheering.”
Original Post, 5:13 pm:
Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes the Mets are trying to trade C Ramon Castro before Saturday’s game.
Rubin reports Brian Schneider will be activated tomorrow.
Rubin also provides information on where Castro might be traded, and how the Mets plan to manage the roster if he’s unable to moved.

According to fans at the game, the Mets played the original version of Meet the Mets tonight in Citi Field during the eighth inning, instead of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.
…i don’t care why, or how, etc., i’m just glad the team understands how much better this is… i mean, seriously, i would love to know who thought it made more sense to rip off the Red Sox than play what is essentially their own theme song… anyway, whatever, i’m just glad the correct song is being played… hopefully this continues…
…good work, vito… thanks…

The 34-year-old Brown hit .260 with four HR and 22 RBI this season in 146 at-bats with Triple-A Portland.
Brown will be assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.
Brown hit .244 with 13 HR in 117 games with the A’s last season.
Tagged News |This season, David Wright is batting .343
when the Mets are trailing or tied in the game, during which he has driven in a run 17 percent of his at bats.
However, he is batting .347 when the team is winning, while driving in a run also 17 percent of his at bats.
In other words, Wright is hitting roughly the same in games when the team needs him most, i.e., when they’re losing or tied, as compared to when they are winning.
Wright is batting .345 overall this season.
…thanks to Mets Walkoffs for helping me with the data in this post…

Tagged Player of the Month |In today’s Bergen Record, Bob Klapisch writes about how Citi Field’s dimensions could be affecting the Mets’ style of play this year.
There’s one major problem, though: While Klapisch notes that the Mets have hit only 17
home runs in 23 games at Citi Field, he neglects to mention that the Mets have hit only 15 home runs in 23 games on the road.
Moreover, Mets pitchers have allowed 19 home runs at home and 16 on the road, meaning that the Mets have both hit and allowed more home runs at Citi Field than they have on the road in the same amount of games.
It certainly does appear that Citi Field favors pitchers and will eventually suppress home-run totals, but the early-season evidence does not demonstrate that. All it shows is that the Mets haven’t hit very many home runs, which could be a problem or could be the trappings of a small sample size and a slew of injury woes.
