Carlos Beltran will return to action tonight, starting in center field and batting third.
Angel Pagan will bat leadoff and play right field, followed in order by Luis Castillo, Beltran, Gary Sheffield in left field, David Wright, Fernando Tatis at first base, Omir Santos behind the plate, Ramon Martinez and Mike Pelfrey.
Lastly, the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons announced today that infielder Alex Cora has joined the team on a minor-league rehab assignment.

You could not tell me in March or April that I would type this.
The Mets need Alex Cora back.
Who’s in left?
Sheffield, batting fourth. There was confusion in the e-mail relayed to me from the field.
Excellent, which means F-Mart is hitting the pine after his sorry display the other night. Kudos, Jerry.
I agree some discipline was necessary for F-mart, but it would have made more sense to pull him right when he did it so Jerry could get the point across with out loseing F-mart for Fridays game.
sheff is in left…im shocked that manuel would bench murph after the night he had, i know its a lefthander but i thought jerry is all about rewarding his players…
My guess would be Sheff. But FMart would be possible as well. We might have decided to play down a guy kind of like in rec softball when you are missing people.
What more does Murphy have to do to earn playing time? Tatis is best used off the bench, and I think it sends the wrong message to players that a 5 rbi night gets you a seat on the bench.
I do agree with Fernando Martinez not starting tonight. Its not good for his development, BUT he needs to sit after not hustling on Wednesday
I have to say I’m somewhat surprised Fmart is sitting out considering Jerry”s comments about the Incedent. Hopefully it’s being done as a punitive measure, and Martinez knows it, instead of just a byproduct of CB being back int he lineup
I know there’s supposed to be a platoon, but why sit Murphy after her just started to get hot. Must be a gut call on Manuel’s part. Didn’t like what he saw in the batting cages from the guy or something.
I would probably attribute F-Mart sitting to the fact that there is a left going,, rather than punishment for not runnign the ball out.
I may be mistaken, but I believe F-Mart is sitting more because the Mets are facing a lefty tonight, not so much that he’s being punished.
If this is true I say Lefty, smefty! This kid is supposed to be some sort of golden boy of the Mets, he had better be able to hit both lefties and righties, if not trade him for someone who can. NO offense but we have had enough platoons.
I wonder how hard they’ll push Beltran. Will he play tomorrow (day game after night game). Would they consider taking him out in the later innings if the Mets are up by say, 3 or more runs?
Thing is F-Mart is still developing, he needs to play everyday. If he wanted to discipline him, he should have taken him out of the game when he didn’t run, but not letting him play today can only harm his confidence. He hasn’t had a hit so far, plus he gets benched for not hustling so all in all disciplining a player is good but disciplining a rookie has effects–do the ends justify the means?
Why isn’t Murphy starting two days after a 5-RBI game? Seems they are basically telling him, you can do great but we are still going to platoon you.
Agreed. I don’t think Jerry is actually punishing F-Mart (although he probably should) it’s more a matter of the match up and performance. Pagan has been hot and obviously he wouldn’t play over either Beltran of Sheff.
I agree with you 5and7. He also think if there was a righty on the mound he still wouldnt be starting but not because he is punished but because he is behind sheffield and Pagan in the depth chart
The fact that Cora is at AAA is awesome. He’ll be a crucial return to the team with he can. Even though Ramon Martinez has been defensively better, Cora is just one of those guys who do those “little things” you hear so much about. He can pick up hits, lay down bunts, and he is defensively better than Martinez.
As for the other Martinez, as I watched the play go down, and thought “shouldn’t he be running,” after getting thrown out, I was calling for him to be taken out and then sat a game. You can say you’re sorry all you want, but you should be punished.
That being said, the rain of boos from the fans and even more the scrutiny of the New York media after a play like that (and Franny of course) could be worse than being benched.
I like getting to see what Pagan can do out there. I do think that Jerry should have let Murphy start tonight. If he looked bad against the lefty he could just pinch hit Tatis for him later. They need to figure out what he is going to be. He needs at bats against righties and lefties and should be playing almost every day.
