With Perez, there's still a chance he can get his head on straight and be a decent mid-rotation starter. Not saying I was ever enthused about that contract either, but it's the price the Mets have to pay when they don't cultivate their own starters. I can't think of any FA pitchers in recent years who have been "steals." The whole market has been inflated and more and more of these guys are going to go unsigned with these outrageous contracts as the economy tanks and franchises wise up and develop their own guys and sign them in their arbitration years.
