Post Game: Marlins 7 Mets 3
By Matthew Cerrone - May 30, 2009 4:42 pm

The Mets lost to the Marlins, 7–3, in Citi Field today.

For a full recap and boxscore, go here.

The Least You Should Know:

  • Josh Johnson pitched seven innings, and allowed just two runs and five hits while striking out five.  He’s 6–0 against the Mets.
  • Tim Redding surrendered seven runs in just four innings, and now has a 9.20 ERA for the season.
  • Jeremy Hermida hit a three-run home run off of Redding, which bounced off the Pepsi Porch, to break the game open in the fifth inning.
  • Ken Takahashi pitched three scoreless innings in relief.
  • Fernando Martinez and Angel Pagan were 4 for 9 with two doubles and two RBI batting at the top of the order.

Other Observations:

  • Fernando Tatis booted a ball, running to his left, in the first inning, with one out, on which a run ended up scoring from third.  I was always wonder how a game may have been different, had it not been for one, single error so early in the game.
  • Redding had very little command today, specifically his fastball.  He also kept missing low and away.  He’s also pitching from behind in the count seemingly every batter.  He left a weak change-up high in th zone that Jeremy Hermida clobbered for a three-run home run.  The Marlins were getting lots of dink-and-dunk hits on awkward swings early on off Redding, which scored runs, but eventually they started hitting him hard.  He needs to be more effective to justify keeping his spot in the starting rotation, though I have no idea who the Mets will turn to if he’s sent to the bullpen.
  • Josh Johnson plus a weak Mets lineup is going to result in very few runs, the Mets chances today were always going to hinge on Redding’s performance.
  • Carlos Beltran left the game with a stomach flu, which he struggled with before and during most of the game, according to Jerry Manuel.  Beltran told reporters following the game that his knee is fine, he was simply nauseated during the game.

The Mets complete their three-game series with the Marlins tomorrow in Citi Field, with John Maine taking on Chris Volstad, after which the team will travel to Pittsburgh for three games with the Pirates starting Monday.

oh, poor Carlito. methinks the Mets should post a sign in the clubhouse and on the jumbotron as follows: WARNING: Tim Redding starts may induce violent nausea.

    let’s get ‘em tomorrow, boys.

Redding was terrible. But he is only here for one year…unlike his over-paid teammate Ollie…ugh

I guess that’s the silver lining to watching him pitch terribly

    • zer09 says:

In all fairness, I’d just as much rather watch Perez pitch to a 9+ ERA than Redding. At least Perez has the potential to be great. What’s the deal with Ollie’s knee? I thought that injury was supposed to be an excuse to get him to the minors? Let’s hurry him back and get him pitching well again!

Its tough to expect a win with what the Mets put out on the field. So I can not be that upset with the team.

To try and see the positive, it was nice to see FMart get his first hit (he actually had two). He would have been my vote for Game Ball even though the Mets lost.

It was also nice to see the speed at the top of the order. This may some day be 2/3 of our starting outfield. I would be happy with them.

Redding looked awful. I wonder could any of that be an issue with Schneider, who made his first start of the year.

Finally, Valdez is Rey-Ordonez-esque. To be honest, I could caress he does not hit (though he did get a hit in the game). He is so crisp on defense that he is exciting to watch (at least I think so).

  3. ravi3 says:

That run in the first would score no matter what…All things considered,it really didn’t have much of an impact on the game, as Bonifacio did not advance to third on the error, and Hermida singled on the next ab anyway.

  4. metsnfinsfan says:

i don’t really agree with starting a B lineup against their ace. i suppose the theory is to give up today and take the series tomorrow … which if it happens, i guess is all good. but resting wright, castillo and sheffield on the same day while reyes and church are still out, is pretty ludicrious imo

let’s win tomorrow, and it will all be moot i suppose

    • ravi3 says:

The logic behind resting them all at once is if you do so, your lineup takes the hit just once, as opposed to over the course of a few days. Throw in the fact that JJ owns the Mets, and you are putting yourself in a position to win more games, as opposed to being close in most games.

      • gbaked says:

not to mention we had our 5th going today, who even on his best day is nowhere near JJ on his worst. (well… maybe in that situation they could be close).

I dont think with our best lineup we would have won today. Hindsight is 20/20… and Hindsight tells me Jerry picked the good day to send out the b squad.

        • metsnfinsfan says:

in hindsight, it appears to have made sense.

but tanking a game with a 1 game lead in the division is dumb. you are basically telling your team “Ok this pitcher is going to own us so i am going to rest my real players. and redding sucks so we cant win anyway”

          i dont like it

i know bobby v used to do it sometimes too, and i didnt like it then either. if reyes and church were here and you wanted to rest 3 regs, fine/ but in essence we had 1 regular in the lineup

          • hotcorner5 says:

we should be less concerned about blowing a 1 game lead on May 30 and more concerned with taking a championship at the end of Sept. any lead now means nothing.

  5. ditas says:

A 5th starter’s responsibility is to give his team innings while giving his team a “chance” to win. Redding has done neither in his last two starts. Nelson Figueroa does a much better job of keeping the Mets in the game and usually gives the team 5 or 6 innings when he is given the opportunity to start. He should be given a shot to hold down the 5th slot in the rotation, while the Mets should just suck up the 2 millions dollars Minaya inexplicably gave Redding in the offseason and cut him.

    • da burg's greatest says:

I’m not positive, but I think Redding’s deal was actually pretty incentives driven, so it would not be too bad. Figs deserves to start though.

      • gbaked says:

Figs has had a bunch of solid games for the mets the past couple years.

I never have felt he deserved to go down when he does… I bet the mets give redding one more shot, and if (when) he doesnt do well then this experiment is over and figs is back with the team.

Plus, gotta love the hometown boy. I really feel bad for him when he gets sent down. I was very happy he stayed with the team.

        • bvaz says:

in my opinion, the Mets were thinking that Perez was on his way back and bringing Figgy up for one or two starts and then needing to pass him through waivers again was not in their best interest.
Now that Ollie is facing a setback, I think right now Figgy is a better option than Redding and they need to do something with redding. Can’t even put him in the ‘pen because his first innings are so poor.
I liked the Redding signing as I thought i gave them options as a starter and worse case you use him in long relief. but thus far, it has not worked out.

  6. ToastyJoe says:

“I was always wonder how a game may have been different, had it not been for one, single error so early in the game.
“Redding had very little command today, specifically his fastball.”

Your second sentence answered your first. No difference whatsoever. Redding would’ve still gotten bombed.

  7. eDaPS says:

With Redding on the mound and the AAA lineup Jerry put out there against an ace, I’m sure pretty much everyone expected a loss, though a surprise win would have been nice as always.

Bright spots though were the bullpen once again performed well. And although his final at-bat was less than ideal, F Mart is starting to hit a bit.

Now let’s get that rubber game. LGM!!!!!!!

  8. ToastyJoe says:

Oh, by the way – once again the Mets lose a game that Santos doesn’t start. Isn’t that like 5 losses in the last 6 non-Santos starts? (I know they beat the Nats with Castro this week).

  9. wright5murph28 says:

toasty i dont think santos would of made much of a difference today, redding has 0 command and was servin up meatballs..and schneider was fine, and also while we are on santos, i never liked castro so its not a big deal to me, but the mets better hope santos isnt just playing over his head because if they traded a solid backup catcher with pop so they can keep a 28 year old journeyman minor leaguer and that backfires…well omar will look quite stupid

    • ToastyJoe says:

In what universe is Ramon Castro a “solid” catcher? He stinks.

      • methead says:

He ddnt say Castro was a solid catcher. He said he is a solid backup which is 100% true. There arent many backup catchers you can name that are better than him.

With that said, I prefer Santos.

        • ToastyJoe says:

He hits .230, stinks defensively, has no motivation, is injury prone, and got passed on the depth chart by a 28-year old rookie. His only value is he can occasionally jack one out of the park. There are dozens of backup catchers I would take over him.

  10. bvaz says:

worst part is that Beltran had a few chances for a big hit and didn;t come through. could have tied the score at 2 or brought the Mets within reasonable striking distance before being pulled.
well, had very low expectations from this game.

my game vall goes to FMart who got his first hit and his first extra base hit later. take the small accomplishments.

    • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

      I would not blame Beltran.

He was suffering from stomach flu all day (i.e. nausea, etc.). I can imagine that swinging the bat is difficult with those symptoms.

Given that Jerry was aware of this and that Jerry was sitting so many starters, I am surprised that Beltran was not one of them.

      • da burg's greatest says:

He also had only played one game of the last 4…It’s important to play regularly.

That said, think about that lineup without Beltran. Murphy is the 3 hitter and Reed is probably hitting in the 5 hole…That 3-4-5 is just awful.

  11. BullpenHelp says:

With Ollie still hurt (and a question whether he will ever really be back) and Redding struggling pretty bad, the Mets should really be in the starters market pretty hard.

Do the Mets have the payroll flexibility to add a front-line starter like the Phils GM says he has?

  12. izzyAmet says:

I don’t understand if Beltran was feeling sick on a day we were going to lose anyway y he didn’t sit out with the rest of the regulars.

  13. slambam13 says:

I really like what i’m seeing from Pagan. I remember loving him at the beginning of the year two years ago and seeing be successful again makes me think he is going to be an important part of our team for the rest of the season (as a bench player most probably). It was really nice to see FMart go the other way as well, because he has been jumping and either missing or rolling over everything. I hope its a sign of good things to come for him.

  14. markzila says:

i’m not a big fan of sitting most of the starters either. 1 game cost us the past 2 seasons. so im not a fan of giving this one away at all.

redding worried me in preseason. had my hopes up after rehab… but now im worried again. he’s not looking so good. and i agree with some other people that figgy looks like the best of the rest at this point. he’s produced when he’s been here.

how bad do those offseason moves look in retrospect? perez and redding? ugh…

    now the positives.

i liked pagan a LOT last year. if he could stay healthy, i dont see church lasting the rest of the season on the team. we wont keep F Mart up since he needs to play everyday since he’s so young. but pagan could easily lead off or bat 2nd for us.

and as usual, the bullpen looked stellar again. i think if we were to add a power hitting 1B, keep Sheff in left and Pagan in RF with a Tatis or someone else subbing once in awhile, that’d be a serious line up. i’m not all that confident in Delgado coming back in top form. and from what he’s said, neither is he.

let’s go maine tomorrow! he’s looked really good recently. hopefully he can keep it up.

  15. alpitt says:

I feel for the fans who paid to see this squad when they probably bought tickets earlier in the season. I understand the move by Jerry, but it’s off-putting. As a displaced fan it was kind of nice to not have to worry about a win though, and if they did it’d be a very pleasant surprise.

I agree Figgy should be back! Guy can’t seem to catch a break sometimes. He always seems to give you 6IP 3ER which is text book for a quality #5.

What happens when everyone gets healthy though? Pagan HAS to stay right? I like his energy and quite frankly, he looks like a ballplayer out there.

  16. Metsbulls1025 says:

There isn’t anything to say about this game. We came out with a 4-A team and tried to be one of the best pitchers in the NL. It was nice to see Martinez have a solid game against a very good pitcher. I hope he can settle in and help this team out. Looking forward to taking the series tomorrow with a rested line up.

  17. da burg's greatest says:

When is Takahashi going to get a chance to start? He seems best in long-relief so far and usually that translates well to starting.

  18. MackeySasserfan says:

I’m a big fan of the platoon system. With Schneider/Santos and Murphy/Tatis already in place, what do people think of Neise for DeRosa, with a platoon of Church/DeRosa in RF? Gil Hodges would have loved it!
