News: Reyes heading to St. Lucie

By Matthew Cerrone on May 31, 2009, 4:16 pm

Jose Reyes will leave for St. Lucie this evening, when the team departs for Pittsburgh.

Reyes will likely play in a minor-league rehab game on Tuesday and Wednesday, after which he’ll be reevaluated on Thursday by team doctors.

Jerry Manuel told reporters before today’s game that he hopes to get Reyes back on Friday, the day he is eligible to come off the DL.

As I understood it if asked to play yesterday he couldn’t. Now he is going to play 2 rehab games and then be ready by Friday? Somehow I think that is wishful thinking. I hope they are not stupid by rushing him. I would rather have him out another week or two then have him pull something really bad and miss several months.

As I was suffering through the agony of listening to the Marlins broadcast, the commentators said he looked strong taking ground balls. But who knows if they are just blowing smoke.

I hope he can come back on Friday, this team really needs him for the second half of June and needs to get healthy. On the flip side we went what 19-9 in May with players out all over the place. If we can get some heatlh and stablity after weathing all that we can put ourselves in pretty good position.

Of course, June/July seem to be good months for us the last few years. Lets hope we can have a good Aug/Sept/Oct :)

Strange, but with Pagan in the lineup I was starting to not miss Reyes too much for a while there. With that said, when Reyes is on, he is one of those guys that can take over a game by himself. We have seen that. That kind of player is just too valuable. So, while it is nice to see some young, hungry, “gritty” guys get a chance, I’ll take the potential Reyes has any day. Even though we have been winning without him, we can’t get him back soon enough.

Gasface77 I too was starting to not miss Reyes as much either. But, with that said, Reyes can absolutely take over a game by himself, but the gears in my head began to turn. Why not Reyes at leadoff and Pagan at 2? Or maybe even the Tony LaRussa idea of putting Pagan 9th and batting the pitcher 8th? I like the options Angel Pagan gives this team when he’s in the lineup.

Pagan has definitely been critical while reyes has been out. If only he could stay healthy!

Not miss Reyes? You’re kidding, right? We’re playing against the worst teams in the league and scratching out wins instead of destroying teams. If we plan on beating the Phils and Yankees not only do we need Reyes back but Beltran gotta get healthy too. Anyone got any word on him?

Supposedly Beltran could have played today but was still down from the stomach virus. The jnee seems to have healed enough to get him back on the filed.

He should be back shortly (hopefully tomorrow).

Might not have Reyes back for the Phils/Yanks, but maybe (think he is eligible to come off the DL Friday).

This is wonderful news – and with the addition of Alex Cora being ready sooner than later, this changes the entire dynamic of the team. They no longer need to look for someone who can backup the middle infielders, or 1B for that matter, with the way Daniel Murphy has been handling that position. Couple that with Gary Sheffield’s performance of late and a 19-9 May, and suddenly this teams biggest worry is Tim Redding every fifth day. Who knows, maybe O Perez can come back at some point in June and take a couple of those starts?

At least Cora and Jose can hit. (Though that was one helluva bunt by Valdez!)

And maybe Perez is a better option than Redding… who knows? They both stink though.

I was starting to like Wilson Valdez.

He is stellar on defense. I know the Mets really like him since this is his second time with the organization (they lost him once).

Sure Cora is a nice backup, but is his defense really better than Valdez?

I know that Valdez is a career journeyman, but so is Santos. I know a man with little offense is nothing to scream over, but when they play great defense that person has to be respected.

Dont get me wrong, I want Reyes back and starting. Reyes give us our lead off batter. I just think Valdez is valuable on defense … a ground ball pitchers best friend.

I am cautiously optimistic about Reyes’ return. Who is to say he will be able to play his game? I don’t think he will return at 100% and with things going well, I think he should sit until he is. It makes no sense to bring him back if he has to be careful how he runs. That is never a good idea.

I agree Metsgirl, They should definetly keep Jose on the D.L. untill he is100% fully healthy. We don’t need him doing the on again off again thing on the D.L. like he did in the past.

I completely agree…Reyes is too valuable to not only this season, but this franchise, to lose over a silly injury. He needs to completely recover in order for this organization to move forward.

Have they ever said how he actually got hurt in any detail?

although the team has been playing really well of late, i can not wait until Reyes and the rest of the regulars are back in action, the “B” team can only stay hot for so long before they get over exposed and possibly over matched

    LETS GO METS

It is time to see the real mets start coming back into the fold. Losing Delgado, Reyes, Schneider, Church to the DL and Beltran for the past few days has been hard to watch. My son and I watch these games and are astounded at the lack of everyday regulars and that they are still winning.

    Just goes to show you….

ITS PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING that wins games

Still trying to understand when Reyes pitched in relief in 2007 and 2008 for the New York Mets that has some leaning toward dubbing him irrelevant.

I’m with Metsgirl. We’ve seen it before but these leg injuries rarely heal with ease. Jose has said himself that his legs are a bit part of who he is and how he plays the game. It’s a long season and the real grind is yet to come. I hope this team finally learns to take the long view on bringing Jose back. Yes, he is a key component to going the distance, but only when healthy and able to do the things that make him dangerous.

If he can’t come back in time to play the phillies/yankees, it should be interesting how the current lineup responds to those teams.

I don’t get the feeling Manuel and Reyes are on the same page. I read in the Star Ledger this morning that when asked about his injury, Reyes responded, “So-so.” That doesn’t sound to me like someone who is going to be back on Friday, yet Manuel seems pretty confident about this. They need to let him sit out as long as he needs to get as close to 100% healthy. they have been biding their time well without him and with the Nats on tap for this weekend, what is the rush.
