Gary Sheffield ended May with an eight-game hitting streak, during which he hit .400 with three HR and 11 RBI while drawing eight walks and stealing a base.
According to last week’s poll on MetsBlog.com, during which 4,600 people responded, Sheffield is MetsBlog’s Player of the Month for May, getting 37 percent of the vote; beating out David Wright (31 percent), Johan Santana (19 percent), Carlos Beltran (eight percent) and Francisco Rodriguez (five percent).
Saturday on SNY, my wrinkled shirt and I talked about Sheffield, as well as the road ahead for the Mets, which you can watch below:
Alex Cora is 3 for 15 in three rehab games with Triple-A Buffalo.
Jerry Manuel suggested to reporters yesterday that Cora will likely return from the disabled list on Tuesday or Wednesday.
… getting cora back is important… apparently, i was not giving him enough credit… for starters, he stabilizes the bench, being able to fill in for Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes… but, also, i now realize the type of leadership he brings to the dugout… he talks to every one… he’s always on the ball, thinking, talking about the game, studying, sharing information with teammates, etc… in the clubhouse, he checks in with people, talks baseball, and encourages a smart-brand of play… it makes sense that people around the game praise this guy, yet stat-junkies dismiss him…
Last week, SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt relayed an anecdote on air that he learned from Cora, who explained to Burkhardt that the turning point to the team’s season, so far, may have been the rain out in Philadelphia on May 3. That day, the team was able to just sit, talk baseball, eat dinner together, and, for the first time all season, they got to truly know one another, and, according to Cora, this made the team seemingly closer.
For what it’s worth, the Mets are 18–8 since the rain out in Philadelphia.
Cora had been hitting .333 with a .435 OBP in 26 games for the Mets, prior to being put on the disabled list with thumb injury.
Angel Pagan will likely have an MRI today, after suffering a right groin injury running down a fly ball during the fourth inning yesterday.
Jerry Manuel did not sound positive when talking to reporters about Pagan after the game, essentially saying this type of injury often ends up being more than just a day-to-day thing.
…that really stinks for pagan, who looked very good last April, then hurt his shoulder and missed the rest of the season, and who looked good the last week or so, finally getting another chance to play everyday, and then this… out again… plus, he is turning out to be an important part of this team, filling in for a banged-up beltran, playing the corners, leading off for Jose Reyes, etc…
…by the way, any time i hear groin injury i think of Cheers, when Sam Malone filled in on the local news to do sports, and did a rap for his monologue…
