The Rangers have put RHP Vicente Padilla on waivers, according to Evan Grant, in a post to his new sports blog, Inside Corner, for D Magazine.
According to Grant, “The move would allow the Rangers to dump Padilla’s salary if any club claims him. It also serves as a subtle notice to other teams the Rangers would be willing to deal him for a small return.”
Padilla is still due $8 million this season, though his contract also has a $12 million team option for next year.
The 31–year-old Padilla is 3–3 in nine starts for
the Rangers, during which he has thrown just four Quality Starts.
In the off-season, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets had expressed interest in acquiring Padilla, as did the Dodgers and Braves.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com believed the Rangers had rejected Omar Minaya’s offer to swap Luis Castillo for Padilla at the Winter Meetings in December.
Tagged News |Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports the Braves have acquired CF Nate McLouth from the Pirates for three prospects.
According to Bowman, the Braves will send RHP Charlie Morton, LHP Jeff Locke and OF Gorkys Hernandez to the Pirates for McLouth.
In 45 games for the Pirates this season, McLouth hit .256 with 9 HR and 34 RBI.

“The Mets are not considering Tom Glavine, a source just told me,” writes Newsday’s David Lennon on Twitter.
Original Post:
The Braves released LHP Tom Glavine, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, who cites major league sources.
Glavine had surgery on his elbow and shoulder during the offseason.
He pitched six scoreless innings in a rehab start for Single-A Rome on Tuesday, while throwing 64 pitches, 44 of which were strikes.
According to Rosenthal, “Glavine was to be paid $1 million for his first day on the active roster, $1.25 million for 30 days on the roster and another $1.25 million for 90 days on the roster, bringing the total possible value of the deal to $4.5 million.”
“I feel physically good,” Glavine is quoted as saying on MLB.com. “I feel good about the amount of pitches I’ve thrown. I feel like I’m ready.”
… i shutter to say this, but, the Mets need a starting pitcher, and he always had a strong relationship with Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon…
…i know his time with the Mets ended badly, but i can’t help but wonder if his name will be dicussed in the offices in Citi Field…

Tonight’s game will be replayed on July 2 at

Original Post:
Tonight’s game between the Mets and Pirates at PNC Park has been rained out.
According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, on Twitter, though no make-up game has been announced, there will not be a double-header tomorrow.
…frankly, i am thrilled… i feel like this team could use an early night, a good dinner, and some rest… just get away from the ballpark, guys, clear your minds and get back at it tomorrow afternoon…
Tagged News |Jerry Manuel recently concluded his weekly interview with WFAN.
To listen to the full interview, go to WFAN.com.
During the discussion, Manuel said, from what he’s been told, Jose Reyes did not tear anything in his calf, and could still be back in time for the series against the Phillies next Tuesday.
Manuel said Gary Sheffield will not play during tomorrow’s day game, acknowledging that a rainout tonight would not be the worst thing for the overall health of his team.
Alex Cora is the type of player who is best served playing four or five times a week, Manuel explained to, and so, while he’ll certainly start at shortstop on occasion, he will not play everyday.
To listen to the entire interview, during which he also speaks about the development of Fernando Martinez; and how to deal with David Wright’s slump; the situation with J.J. Putz; go to WFAN.com.
Tagged WFAN |Update, 4:55 pm:
Jerry Manuel told reporters that J.J. Putz will now pitch in the seventh inning, with Bobby Parnell shifting up to the eighth-inning set-up role, Newsday’s David Lennon recently wrote on Twitter.
Manuel will be a guest on WFAN at 5 pm, which you can listen to here.
Update, 4:42 pm:
According to eyewitnesses, it is now raining in Pittsburgh.
Update, 4:38 pm:
Ricco told reporters Jose Reyes experienced pain again in his calf during an extended spring training game today.
Reyes will return to New York for additional tests.
…in other words, it’s back to square-one for reyes… unbelievable…
Church also played in the game and felt better.
Oliver Perez pitched from flat ground today, though there is still no timetable for when he will pitch in a game again.
Update, 4:29 pm:
Beltran told reporters he lost between five and 10 pounds, while dealing with his recent illness, adding, “I feel skinny, very skinny.”
Mets assistant GM John Ricco will soon speak with reporters.
By the way, on Twitter, SI.com’s Jon Heyman announced that Matt Yalloff, formerly of SNY, has joined the MLB Network.
Good for you, Matt. Good luck.
Update, 4:00 pm:
Beltran will start in center field tonight and bat third.
Cora will start at short and bat leadoff, followed in order by Luis Castillo, then Beltran, Gary Sheffield in right, David Wright, Daniel Murphy at first, Fernando Martinez in left field, Omir Santos and Mike Pelfrey on the mound.
Original Post:
Though it isn’t raining, the tarp is on the field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, as seen here from David Lennon in a post to his blog for Newsday.
Initially, Carlos Beltran was not in today’s lineup, but, according to the Daily News, he then told reporters he will be playing.
Beltran had been suffering from either a stomach virus or food poisoning, according to the New York Post’s Bart Hubbuch, in a post to Twitter.
Meanwhile, Ramon Martinez will likely be put on the disabled list and soon be replaced on the roster with OF Emil Brown, who will wear No. 29, according to the Star-Ledger’s Brian Costa, also on Twitter.
Here is the latest New York Baseball Today, during which Ted Berg talks with Sam Borden of the Journal News and SNY.TV about batting average with runners in scoring position, and how it pertains to tonight’s Mets and Yankees games:

So far, I believe things are going well with the new system for comments.
Interestingly, Deadspin.com was recently forced to switch policies as well, here, so I’m glad to see I am not alone.
For those who missed MetsBlog’s new system, click here.
Remember, in order to be accepted in to the system, you must have a history of posts that can be reviewed, so keep posting.
Also, like I said last week, it could take me anywhere from one day to one week, or more, to get through the comments that are currently awaiting moderation, which, right now, sit at 1,446 – so keep posting, and establish what you’re about.

Tagged News |In a must-read report for SI.com, Jon Heyman does an amazing job breaking down the trade market, explaining which team is seeking what and who might be available before the deadline.
According to Heyman, Mets GM Omar Minaya will not trade Fernando Martinez in a deal for A’s OF Matt Holliday.
Heyman believes Minaya is looking for a bat in the outfield, as opposed to first base, while also looking at the market for starting pitchers and relievers.
…frankly, at this point, omar should probably also see what it will take to acquire Hawkeye, Ben Casey and Dr. Mark Greene…
By the way, in a post to his blog for ESPN.com, Buster Olney recently said he expects Holliday to sign just a three-year, $35 million deal this off-season when he becomes a free agent.
…i am intrigued by holliday… i would not trade martinez to get him, though i would consider Jon Niese, and i wonder if Billy Beane would have interest in Ryan Church, who is not eligible for free agency until 2012, plus other prospects… in the end, beane is clearly going to seek talent worth more than the two draft picks he will get if he keeps holliday and lets him walk as a free agent…
Holliday hit just .240 with one HR during his first 75 at bats this season, but has since hit .303 in his last 113 at bats, including six HR, four doubles, 21 RBI and four stolen bases.
…the Mets could trade to get holliday, sign him to a reasonable contract, and have him, martinez and Carlos Beltran in the outfield next season and beyond…
Also of note, Heyman writes about the market for Nick Johnson, Aubrey Huff, Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham; how the Yankees, Rangers and Angels will be looking for relief pitching; and whether Erik Bedard might have issues pitching for a big-market team like the Phillies, who are determined to acquire a starting pitcher.
Update, 3:35 pm:
I e-mailed Tyler Blezinski from Athletics Nation, who knows the A’s as well as anyone I am aware of, to ask about Holliday and Beane.
Matthew Cerrone: Do you think Beane would have interest in young pitching, plus Ryan Church, who is a free agent after 2012?
Tyler Blezinski: I don’t see Beane trading Holliday unless he can
somehow get back a big-time third base or shortstop prospect… The A’s have plenty of good young pitching but they desperately need some infield help on the left side.
Matthew Cerrone: So, Daniel Murphy?
Tyler Blezinski: That could be a part of it, for sure. But I think if Billy can score both a SS and a 3B in a deal, he’d jump at that first.
Mets RHP Brad Holt and RHP Jenrry Mejia
have been promoted from Single-A St. Lucie to Double-A Binghamton.
In eight starts in Single-A this season, the 22–year-old Holt was 4–1 with a 3.05 ERA in 41 innings, during which he struck out 50 batters and walked just 10.
In spring training, I talked with Ike Davis and others, in a video you can watch here, during which Holt told me:
“I throw a lot of fastballs. I’m able to locate fastballs in and out. And now the breaking ball is coming along pretty well, I’m getting to where I can locate it. Since I’ve been here we’ve been working on the change-up a lot, and it’s getting a lot more consistent too and I’m able to locate it down in the zone. But, mainly I just work off the fastball and everything else is coming along.”
Holt was ranked the team’s fourth-best prospect by Baseball America, as well as John Sickels of MinorLeagueBlog.com, and Baseball Prospectus.
Last year, John Manuel of Baseball America said of Holt, “He sounds like he might be Mike Pelfrey with a bit less downhill or sink, a better breaking ball and considerably less hype.”
Meanwhile, Mejia, 19, was 4–1 in nine starts with a 1.97 ERA in 50 innings, during which opponents hit .217 against him, while striking out 44 times.
Speaking of St. Lucie, Mets 22–year-old SS Reese Havens has been put on the minor-league disabled list.
