“Jose Reyes has a tear in his right hamstring tendon,” reports SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt on Twitter.
Reyes will rest for the next two days, then be reevaluated.
…from what i can gather, it is a slight tear in his right hamstring, and it’s quite likely he is out through the All Star break, and probably longer than that… what’s worse, it appears he did this, separate from the calf issue, during the extended spring training game…
…however, at this point, i think i’m done believing anything the Mets say when it comes to injuries… sad, but true… i think the new plan is to just wait for the lineup to be posted, and hope everyone is still alive…
…un… be… lievable… i mean, what else is there to say…
Update, 9:50 pm:
The official statement from the Mets reads:
“Jose Reyes today was examined by the Mets team physician… and subsequently underwent an MRI… The MRI revealed a small tear in his right hamstring, a new injury. Reyes will rest for two days and then resume treatment.”
Following today’s 11–6 loss to the Pirates, Carlos Beltran said:
“The reality is, coming here to Pittsburgh and getting swept, for me, I feel embarrassed… We need to find a way to play better and to focus more on what we need to accomplish… I mean, we have to take this personally. It can’t happen… I know the Pirates are a big-league team, but we’re better than them. We’re better than them, and we know we’re better than them. But, we have to do something about it. McLouth wasn’t here and they still came out and scored 11 runs. 11 runs? We have to play better.”
…yeah, i mean, everything he said…

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, following the game, J.J. Putz told reporters he will go to New York tomorrow for a medical exam, saying he may end up needing surgery.
Putz said his elbow still hurts, and he’s unable to pitch without pain, writes Newsday’s David Lennon on Twitter.
Putz recieved an anti-inflammatory shot earlier in the season in connection with a bone spur in his elbow.
In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Bart Hubbuch writes, “Putz had planned to have surgery after the season to fix the bone spur, but he admitted today that the surgery might need to be moved up now.”
…in a post to MetsBlog.com on tuesday, here, i speculated it would take roughly two more weeks before we’d begin to hear talk of putz’s elbow, and surgery, just like had been the case with John Maine last season… i guess i should have said two days…
…like i said after that, in the end, the Mets need to find a way to replace Tim Redding in the rotation, so he can slot in to the bullpen as a long-man, freeing up Brian Stokes to become a situational reliever, allowing Ken Takahashi, Pedro Feliciano and Sean Green to do the same, thus filling out the bullpen in a way that allows Bobby Parnell and Francisco Rodriguez to pitch in just the eighth and ninth innings…

The Trade Deadline will be Friday, July 31.
Between now and then, I have a feeling we’re going to hear a lot of rumors connecting the Mets to A’s OF Matt Holliday and Astros OF Carlos Lee.
Holliday will be a free agent at the end of this season, and reports of Oakland suggest Billy Beane will look to get back at least two, quality prospects, including an infielder.
Lee, on the other hand, is due $18.5 million this season, as well as in
2010, 2011, and 2012, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.
Lee will likely cost less - in terms of prospects – than Holliday, because a team like the Mets could bring on Lee’s entire salary in the deal.
The 32–year-old Lee is batting .319 this season, with nine HR.
He has hit roughly 30 HR and 100 RBI while batting around .310 during each of the last three seasons.
The Mets lost to the Pirates today, 11–6, in PNC Park, completing the sweep of a rain-shortened three-game series.

The Least You Should Know:
- Mike Pelfrey did not have his best stuff, he got knocked around in the first inning, allowing four runs, and though the Mets were able to rally back to within one, Pelfrey allowed four more runs in fourth. That was essentially the ball game.
Other Moments, and Random Observations:
- Pelfrey was not sharp in the first inning, he missed on what should have been an inside fastball, as well as a slider, and both ended up being hit just our of reach from the defense for a RBI, this plus Pelfrey interfering with a ground ball and a blooper in front of Fernando Martinez, and it was quick four-run first, which included six hits and a walk. He didn’t have much on his slider, and he lacked command of his fastball. It was much of the same in the fourth inning, during which he was pulled from the game.
- The Mets returned the favor in the top of the second by being aggressive on the base paths, with some help from the umps, taking advantage of some shaky infield defense from the Pirates, to score three runs.
- Beltran said he lost between five and 10 pounds while recovering from a stomach bug, but it apparently didn’t impact his offense, since he hit a monster home run to center field, plus hit a double.
- The Pirates are going to score some runs with those three guys batting at the top of the order, it’s very 1985 Cardinals.
- Andrew McCutchen is super fast.
- Andy LaRoche has a serious arm at third base. He made some unbelievable throws during this series, flat-footed, like a cannon.
- Pelfrey is tall, but that home-plate umpire was taller. Wow.
- I wonder what Daniel Murphy is always muttering to himself when he’s at bat or on the bases. I bet it’s pretty entertaining.
- Sean Green is looking much better, today he threw two perfect innings in relief. He still looks eerily similar to Aaron Heilman, though.
- J.J. Putz, on the other hand, continues to look bad. Today, he was flat, letting up two runs on three hits to six batters. Again, he did not look happy while walking off the field, to say the least.
- In the end, like it always is, this game was about starting pitching, and pretty much nothing else.
The Mets begin a three-game series against the Nationals tomorrow night in Washington DC, with Tim Redding taking on Shairon Martis.

Alex Cora will leadoff and play shortstop, followed in order by Luis Castillo, Beltran, Gary Sheffield in right field, David Wright, Daniel Murphy, Fernando Martinez in left field, Omir Santos and Mike Pelfrey.
Prior to the game, Jerry Manuel told reporters he expects Ryan Church to return to the team on Sunday.
Manuel said Martinez essentially controls his own fate, and how performs over the next few days will determine whether he remains on the roster.
…the Mets have always been honest, basically saying, martinez will be wherever he’ll get the most at bats… if he’s hitting, and he can play everyday, he’ll be on the big league club… if he’s not hitting, or he’s gonna ride the bench, he’ll instead go back to Triple-A so he can play everyday… this makes sense…
In his last 15 at bats, Martinez is has four hits, including two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases.
