Read: The Disabled List and Injuries since 2002

by Matthew Cerrone on June 4th, 2009 at 11:21 am

According to Beyond the Boxscore, no team in the National League during the last seven seasons has had more players spend time on the disabled list than the Mets.

this is an amazing post, by the way, with outstanding research that you really should check out… unreal…

…also, i bet the conclusion he reaches is of no shock to Mets fans, and is evidence the team must seriously reevaluate whomever is in charge of conditioning and medical issues for this franchise

Minors: Last Night in the Minor Leagues

by Jon Schneider on June 4th, 2009 at 11:15 am

This morning, at Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde recaps all of yesterday’s Mets minor-league action, including late inning collapses for all the Met ball clubs.

Double-A Binghamton received a strong performance from RHP Ryan Coultas, who went six innings allowing only two runs and no walks. The bullpen could not hold on however giving up three runs in the ninth and losing 5-4.

The Bisons of the Triple-A International League came back down 3-0 in the eighth last night to tie the game, but was short lived as RHP Connor Robertson let up two go-ahead runs in the bottom of the inning.

Robertson is 0-3 with a 5.61 ERA this season for Triple-A.

Buzz: Tom Glavine and Vicente Padilla

by Matthew Cerrone on June 4th, 2009 at 11:06 am

According to Mark Healy of Baseball Digest, the Phillies have already been in contact with free-agent LHP Tom Glavine, who was released by the Braves yesterday.

Last night on Twitter, Newsday’s David Lennon wrote, “The Mets are not considering Glavine, a source just told me.”

Bill Ladson of MLB.com does not believe the Nationals will sign Glavine either, at least not as a pitcher.

In a poll on MetsBlog.com yesterday, 72 percent of 6,700 people said they would not sign Glavine to pitch for the Mets.

Meanwhile, the Rangers put RHP Vicente Padilla on waivers, according to Evan Grant of D Magazine.

Healy believes the Mets had a front office official watch Padilla’s last start against the Yankees, according to an NL East scout.

Padilla is still due $8 million this season, though his contract also has a $12 million team option for next year.

He is 3–3 in nine starts for the Rangers, with just four Quality Starts.

In the off-season, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets had expressed interest in acquiring Padilla, as did the Dodgers and Braves.

Links: Feliciano, Stats, Omar, Glavine and Star Trek

by Matthew Cerrone on June 4th, 2009 at 9:57 am

In a post to Amazin Avenue, Eric Simon uses a variety of statistics to determine that Pedro Feliciano is using his change-up more, getting more swings and misses, and having a better season because of it.

Speaking of stats, in a post to NY Baseball Digest, Mike Silva points out that ESPN.com has added some new, useful information to its boxscores.

Last night there was no game played, so, today, Adam, the Brooklyn Met Fan, lists a few Mexisms to check out.

Randy Medina of Bleacher Report lists a few changes he’d like to see in Citi Field for next season.

Mike Barrett of the Daily Stache wonders if June will be Omar Minaya’s last chance to build a winner out of the Mets.

EYP6SuZDIn a post to Subway Squakers, Jon Lewin asks the Mets to just say no to Tom Glavine, who was released by the Braves last night.

Lastly, the B-Mets will wear a Star Trek-inspired uniform on Friday, which is also the night Brad Holt will make his Double-A debut, according to BMets.com.

News: Reyes’s Calf, Beltran, Church and Putz

by Matthew Cerrone on June 4th, 2009 at 9:19 am

In case you missed it, from yesterday’s busy afternoon…

Jose Reyes left yesterday’s extended spring-training game in the third inning because he felt ‘discomfort in his right knee.’

Reyes had been put on the disabled list with tendinitis in his calf.

He will return to New York today for additional tests.

“All the indications I have is that it wasn’t as damaging as it sounded,” Jerry Manuel told reporters.  “So, maybe instead of Friday, then we’ll have him back by the weekend.  If not, then definitely for the Phillies series when we get home… His legs are obviously very important.”

…either manuel is delusional, or he knows something about reyes that nobody else is aware of… i hope he’s right

Ryan Church, however, played six innings in the game in Port St. Lucie.

from what i can gather, church will play in another extended spring game today, and either remain in st. lucie, or play in a minor-league game, before being activated, hopefully, from the disabled list at some point next week, though it could be as early as Sunday… the thing is, it’s a hamstring, so proceed with caution

Meanwhile, Carlos Beltran had been in last night’s starting lineup.

Beltran told reporters he believes he lost between five and 10 pounds while dealing with what was either a stomach bug or food poisoning.

Manuel also told reporters that J.J. Putz will no longer be used as the team’s primary setup man, instead Bobby Parnell will move into the eighth-inning role.

Lastly, the Mets put SS Ramon Martinez on the disabled list with a broken pinkie, and promoted OF Emil Brown from Triple-A.

Note: The Up-Coming Pitching Rotation

by Matthew Cerrone on June 4th, 2009 at 7:13 am

Due to last night’s rain out, Mike Pelfrey will pitch this afternoon at 12:35 pm against the Pirates, pushing Tim Redding to Friday, and John Maine to Saturday against the Nationals in DC.

if i am mapping this out correctly, it also means johan will now pitch against the Phillies, in the first of three games next Tuesday in Citi Field… in short, i suppose the Mets could have skipped redding altogether, but i’d rather have redding face the Nationals and santana face the Phillies, as oppose to skipping redding and having santana go against the nationals and miss the Phillies altogether

...also important, this gets maine an extra day of rest, as he returns from a stomach bug

Update, 8:44 am:

…i accidentally listed santana as saturday’s starting pitcher, not maine, in the first draft of this post… my bad… apparently i had Johan on the Brain… i mean, can you blame me… i wish he could pitch every three days

News: Braves Hanson to Make Debut Saturday

by Joe Hamrahi on June 4th, 2009 at 2:49 am

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the Braves will purchase the contract of Tommy Hanson, and the young starter will make his Major League debut on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Turner Field.

Hanson was ranked the 13th-best prospect in all of baseball, according to Baseball Prospectus, and the 24th rated prospect, according to MLB.com.

In 66.1 innings in Triple-A this season, Hanson has a 1.49 ERA with 90 strikeouts and just 17 walks, while opponents are hitting just .169 against the 6′ 6″ right-hander.

…Hanson joins an already formidable rotation consisting of Derek Lowe, Jair Jurrjens, and Javier Vazquez

…whether or not atlanta can improve its offense, rated 10th in the NL in runs scored, remains to be seen… however, the offense may not need to score a lot of runs with these pitchers starting four out of every five games…

The Braves will move Kris Medlen to the bullpen.
