“J.J. Putz will undergo surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur in his pitching elbow,” reports Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com, according to a major-league source.
Rosenthal believes Putz will be out for eight to 10 weeks.
Adam Rubin of the Daily News later confirmed Rosenthal’s story, as he wrote to a post on his blog.

Hmm…..is it any coincidence at how things are turning out this season after making a guy named MURPHY a regular starter? lol
#1 Murphy isn’t a regular starter
#2 What’s the connection?
#1 He was the starting left fielder at the beginning of the season.
#2 Ever heard of Murphy’s Law?
And it was a joke. Easy there, chieftain.
Murphy’s law, gotcha. He was a starter for all of 5 minutes. And at which point did u figure I was uneasy?
Tone is hard to gauge in the interweb. No big deal.
Hopefully Murph can excel at 1B, though. Tough season so far, hopefully these guys can hang through and make a good push after the ASB.
WHat in the world does Murphy have to do with JJ’s elbow? This surgery should have taken place weeks ago, now more time is lost and deeper in the season when it matters most. Unfortunetly this is yet another case of clouded judgement of an injury by the mets medical staff as well as management. My question is if J.J.knew he had a bone spur in his elbow (which he did because he’s had prior treatment) why did’nt he have surgery in the off-season to remove it? He would still have been ready for the reagular season. More importantly why wasn’t this bone spur detected in his physical required for the trade? (Or maybe the mets didn’t bother to do a physical) I don’t know but somebody knew and either said nothing or management didn’t care. Either way the Mets are extremely lucky that Bobby Parnell has evolved to the pitcher he has, because otherwise that bullpen would be in real trouble. The lone bight spot I suppose is that this news solves the Who is Church going to replace on the roster?
Could have had this surgery 2 weeks ago and already be on the road to recovery….I guess he and Billy will now be racing to the 8th inning role
If this was a known thing, he shouldve shut it down and got it fixed. Now he get blown out pitching. Gonna “evaluate” and now maybe surgery.
He obviously couldnt pitch through it. shouldve gotten it fixed weeks ago.
The better question is 8 to 10 weeks till what. John Maine had 6 months to recover and he did not look good at all starting the season. Perhaps only pitching one inning makes it easier, but as we have seen JJ at 85% is not effective.
Maine was his shoulder, not his elbow, but i am not a doctor, don’t know what is worse. Also, Foxsports reported this at about 12:50 citing major league sources. Here is the scariest part, Dr. Altcheck the team doctor will perform the surgery.
Dont let “team doctor” designation scare you. Dr. Altheck is one of the best in his field. Hospital for Special Surgery is one of the best in this area in the country, and Dr. Altheck is the best of the best.
I like Dr. Altheck a lot. He repaired my torn rotator cuff.
He and the HSS staff will do a great job.
Soooooo tricky. 8 weeks is VERY optimistic for returning from elbow surgery, but perhaps it’s a relatively minor surgery.
The question for the Mets will be: what role will Putz have when he returns. There’s little chance he falls back into the 8th inning role when he returns.
And if that’s the case, I worry about his attitude considering he’s already told us how hard it is for to get pumped up for the 8th inning… let alone the 7th!
His attitude will be driven by the contract that he’ll want to sign – he has to show he can pitch. The inning won’t matter.
Well, to spin this glass half full, it’s a good thing we got Putz AND K-Rod. I remember people saying JJ was the better pitcher. If settled for that alone where would we be?
Does he get any credit for adding redundancy to the bullpen??
Also, a friend pointed this out to me.
Take a look at the Mets contributions to the World Baseball classic and look at who has been/is injured this season.
Not pretty . . .
I was thinking about this the other day. I obviously don’t know what was going on behind the scenes at the Classic, but you gotta wonder what kind of conditioning our guys were given while there.
KRod also went, as did Beltran and Wright and several others, so I’m not sure you can draw that line. When you have half your team go and then guys come down with injuries there’s bound to be some overlap…
Beltran has been bothered by some lingering knee soreness and D Wright maybe did not get enough at bats during the spring because he started the season striking out a ton.
And K-Rod had some back spasms.
Granted that could be anything, so strike him from the list, but add Beltrans legs and Wrights inconsistancy I think make for a strong case . . .
Almost every Met fan knew there was something wrong with Putz. . Amazing it took this long for the insiders to find out
I’m starting to think the Mets learned how to report injuries from the Bellichek/Mangini, “its fine, It’s fine, It’s fine, It’s not fine,” school.
The Mets do seem to pull the:
well lets see what happens, rest a day, try to play, etc.
They seem shy to put guys on the DL or opt for the surgery they need without first waiting a few weeks, wasting DL post-date time, or even risking more injury….
Who is running the show? Omar, doctors? I dont think you see this as much from other teams.
At least they didn’t give up anything to get Putz. Took a shot, it didn’t work out, we have to move on. Hopefully, Parnell can keep it going and hold down the 8th. And this should finally give Stokes some meaningful innings, even if he gets treated like he ran over Jerry’s dog or something.
Good that he is getting it done. If they can stay in the race until say mid-august, thee is the real possibility that they get to add Putz and Wagner as stretch run help to the pen.
No guarantees they get the old stuff back, but man, what a help if they do!
Hoepfully by august they have Delgado and Reyes back too. Again, no guarantee as to how they perform, but they could pretty much have the A team in place for the last 50-60 games.
As long as they don’t fall too far beind (don’t forget the WC too) through July, they should have the horses for a nice run down the homestretch.
I think the next 9 days will be critical. If we can’t go 5-4 against the Marlins, Phillies and Yankees, we may be too deep come mid August.
I keep hearing Figgy, but it might be worth giving Casey fossum a call up. In 9 starts, he is pitching very well, and adds a lefty to the rotation against the Phillies, sliding Redding to the pen
I believe the Yank scooped Fossum up for Scranton. I could be wrong.
Fossum is garbage.
That’s what I get for reading season stats instead of roster
Good.
Now we can stop running him out there in hopes that he’ll fix himself only to watch him struggle. Now this team can move Bobby P to the 8th and let Jerry work the match-ups in the 7th.
If they knew he was hurt, I dont know why it took so long to determine he couldnt pitch through it.
It was pretty obvious….
Elmer Dessens may get the call by default. Everyone else is struggling
Since Putz is going to be on the DL for a while.
How about Kunz?
Tobb (I think) on the minor league blog speculated on him. His numbers aren’t all that bad. ANd if he is already on the 40 man (and he has options) he just might get the call. If it doesn’t go well, back down he goes.
Also, having the starters go 7 on a regular basis will be a big help!
