By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 10, 2009 3:57 pm

According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, on Twitter, the Mets have signed Chip Ambres, who will be assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Update, 4:00 pm:

Jerry Manuel will use the same lineup tonight as last night, with Luis Castillo leading off, then Alex Cora, Carlos Beltran, Gary Sheffield, David Wright, Fernando Tatis, Ryan Church, Omir Santos and Mike Pelfrey.

Update, 4:25 pm:

Prior to the game, Manuel said he had no problem with Cole Hamels’s remarks about his team being ‘choke artists,’ like he told WFAN last winter.

“That’s good for baseball,” he said, about the comment.

Update, 4:29 pm:

Manuel said he had no problem with Johan Santana’s actions last night when he was told to come out of the game.

Manuel said Santana did not make a plea to stay in the game.

Update, 4:33 pm:

Manuel said Alex Cora is a vocal leader for this club, noting he has done ‘a lit of different things for this club.’

He said he prefers to have Luis Castillo bat leadoff against a left-handed pitcher, but likes Cora hitting leadoff against a righty.

Update, 5:42 pm:

J. J. Putz is talking with reporters at his locker, with his arm in a sling.

  1. THE Chip Ambres? Haha…just kidding. I remember him making his Mets debut in 2007 and getting a game-winning hit, though. That was sweet.

Just padding the minor leagues, though…

  2. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I hope Luis Castillo picks it up soon. .244 in may and .125 in June (24 at bats). He’s starting to sink back to 2008 levels of futility.

  3. derxmasta says:

is this the first time jerry has used the same lineup 2 days in a row, sans pitcher?

  4. Jaded1983 says:

I’d rather see Murphy than Castillo….

  5. AndrewMichaelZ says:

Despite what Jerry has said, I wonder if he will actually give Murphy a start in this series.

Glad to see Shef in the lineup again, he did some hustling out there last night. He actually looked a bit better while swinging and running the bases.

    • dlbags says:

Um, no? He got caught running to 2nd; no limping to 2nd on a routine double?

Seriously this lineup is crap. Wright needs to hit higher so he’s not being protected but Fernando Tatis, FMart should be splaying or in Buffalo, period. And Murphy should be playing every day at this point. Seriously at this point I think Daniel getting comfortable at 1st is more important than we all waiting for Tatis to be some player that he’s not. Highly touted prospect burns out eventually lands on the Mets past his prime has a great season last year wins award and now we’re all convinced the spike year is who he really is? Or it is because he hit two grand slams in a game once?

I don’t understand why the Mets think they can resurrect people by simply putting a Mets uniform on them. Daniel Murphy is the future of this club and needs to get his time consistently just liek FMart.

Sheffield needs to sit until he can run like a normal major league player. He’s not hitting bombs out to warrant the Kirk Gibson treatment.

If Daniel Murphy is the future of the Mets, I’m going to start looking for a new team.

I wish the guy well, but he’s a singles hitter without a position. Let’s calm down on Murphy.

It seems that Murphy is not in his plans. I don’t understand how Manual could put Tatis on 1st base when he been terrible these few days granted that he have been productive last year, but he is not everyday player; whereas, I feel that Murphy needs some consistent playing time to development. It seems like switching positions and no playing everyday is affect him somewhat.

It is also true with F-Mart, if Manual is the one to keep him up then why he is not playing. He needs to play to develop. Let hope we win today.

I’m psyched. The choke quotes, Beltran’s death threat, Victorino’s death stare last night… this could be an “interesting” game.

  7. wright5murph28 says:

yea i know..i actually laughed at victorinos face…looked more then pissed…that being said..if hamels throws at beltran…i hope jimmy rollins or victorino get one right on the chin..

  8. UpstateDave says:

Maybe Cora can convince Pelfrey to throw a little chin music Rollins’ way…

I can’t really argue with keeping the same lineup as last night. I’m particularly glad to see he left Church in, as I really expected him to sit today, against all rational thought. The one thing I’d do is bat Cora leadoff against any pitcher and drop Castillo back to the 8th spot until he gets going again. He’s still useful, but he’s killing us in the leadoff spot. Murphy (when he plays) can handle the 2-hole, or even Wright might make things interesting and give us a different look.

  9. ToastyJoe says:

Now is as good a time as any to point out that I’m glad to see Omir Santos is pretty much the every day catcher. He is a better hitter than Schneider, and miles better defensively.

    • wright5murph28 says:

well it seems as if they are doing a straight platoon…santos is playing alot lately cause theyve faced alot of lefties

    • cuervo says:

You know i thought Omir was better defensively as well, and he probably is as far as fundamentals etc.. but did you see the % of runners thrown out? I think they put it up on SNY a week or so ago and Omir was in the 20s and Schneider in the 40s

      • ToastyJoe says:

I just looked it up – Schneider is .391 lifetime and 1 for 4 this year (.250). Omir is .263 lifetime (most of which is this year, but it’s a very small sample size – 5 out of 20. Safe to say the jury’s still out on his arm.

      • dlbags says:

Schnieder is a far better catcher in every aspect except hitting than Omir Santos.

        • DonGately says:

Schneider also has a lifetime OPS+ of 83 in nearly 1000 games, while Santos has 115 career PAs, and an OPS+ of 85 this season. It’s hard to see how Santos is an upgrade at all. Actually, his name is easier to spell, so I give him credit for that.

        • ToastyJoe says:

Where do you get that from? Schneider is extremely underwhelming behind the plate. Not terrible, but not particularly good either. Omir appears to be much sharper back there from what I’ve seen.

  10. ravi3 says:

I don’t like Jerry saying that he was ok with Hamel’s comments. It’s one thing to accept what he said, and then respond by saying something like “it’s up to us to disprove that notion”, because Hamel’s comments are backed up by the Mets falling short the last two years, and the Phils winning it all. However, to simply say that he is ok with it, especially considering that Hamel’s has not yet been a weapon againt the Mets (1-3 lifetime) really epitomizes these Mets.

  11. dlbags says:

Anyone have video or pics of Victorino being annoyed? I didn’t catch it.
